My older daughter just started dating a kid, last name Pratt.
When I met him, I said, "Pratt, huh? You related to King Karloff?"
He said, "What's that?"
So, I smiled and said, "Never mind. Hey, wanna see my workbench?"
He humored me and said, "Sure."
(Kid didn't even have one callus on his hand. Prissy...)
So, I showed him many sharp things...like ripsaws, ice picks, finger-clipping pruning shears...
And -- of course -- Husqvarna.
I even started it up for him while telling him about her last boyfriend -- the one who gave her a hickey.

This picture has always intrigued me, considering that Universal kept Chaney's appearance as the Phantom, a secret in all publicity material. I have wondered whether this shot may have been taken at the end of filming.

These 2 images are actually an interesting study.
The year was 1946.
Karloff last played the role of the Monster, in Son Of Frankenstein, back in 1939, but here, makeup maestro, Jack Pierce, once again brought the monster to life, for these promotional stills for Samuel Goldwyn film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It is not known if any footage was actually shot of Karloff as the Monster. Goldwyn had to get permission from Universal to use the likeness.
The other gentleman in the first shot is Mitty director Norman Z. McLeod. In the other, is his wife Evelyn. Karloff was 59 when these pics were taken. With his thinner face, he more closely resembled his appearance in the 1931 original. thumbup

Too bad Universal/Pierce don't get royalties from ALL the likenesses of their Monsters.
Afterall their creations have nearly completely usurped the popular culture vision and understanding of each; even though they are actually literary figures. When we think of Frankenstein (even though it's really Frankenstein's Monster) we think of the Karloff, green skinned, electrode-necked image - much the same goes for Lugosi's Dracula...
-
Chris, I would think that anyone using the Monster's likeness/image, (for business or publicity purposes, etc) has to pay some kind of licensing fee to Universal, even today. The legal eagles here might know the answer. As far as Pierce - he was just a studio employee, paid to come up with, and apply, makeup designs.
He was merely a part of the Universal City factory/studio system back then, so he never would have received any kind of royalties, unfortunately. :-[
-
Yes if the are using an actual rendition of Karloff as the monster than surely Universal still owns the copyright.
What I am try to get at is that the modern popular conception of "Frankenstein" is not Mary Shelley's original creation but Karloff/Univeral/Pierce's version (which is much the same for Dracula/Lugosi/Universal etc)...
Ask someone to draw Frankenstein or Dracula and likely they are going to draw something very similar to how they were portrayed in the movies. Even the Count on Sesame Street talks like Lugosi!
-
I see what you mean, Chris. Pierce, indeed, created iconic images, there is no question about that. thumbup
-
Pierce got screwed in the same fashion as Jack Kirby.
Both were paid hourly for their timeless creations.
Too bad.

Chris, these are production stills from these scenes so they may be the only record remaining if the footage (and more importantly) the negative have been lost or destroyed. If these sequences ended up on the cutting room floor, chances are all the elements are gone forever.
Unless anything is languishing away, forgotten, in a Universal vault somewhere.

Are these deleted scenes available in their entirety anywhere?
There's around 20 mins or more that was cut from Bride, for one reason or another. The whole Dwight Fry sub-plot was removed as it was said to have slowed the pace down. The ending was changed completely, as Henry, and Elizabeth were both killed, but Uni wanted a happy ending. Check out the end where the Lab is blown up, and you can clearly see Colin Clive stood against the back wall... there was also some shots of the Monster on the rampage, cut to tone the violence down somewhat. Including him dragging the Burgomaster out of a window during a meeting of towns people.
Such a shame, as all this footage, if it had been kept will have been destroyed in one of the two fires that claimed most of the film stock Uni had in it's Vaults... :'(

Please elaborate on the vault fires. The two I was aware of is the one in 2008 which destroyed some digital back ups and film copies. Nothing was lost in that one, film wise and the one in 1924, which wouldn't affect anything from the "classic horror" period.
Universal DID junk most of their silent titles, screen tests, and trailers in 1948 to recover silver content.
-
Some interesting info about vault fires and destruction of films/negatives not caused by fire:*
1914- Lubin fire in Philadelphia destroys Oliver Hardy's film debut as well as footage of McKinley's ambulance leaving the Expo after he was shot. Also lost in this fire Hobart Bosworth's version of The Sea Wolf.
1914- Los Angeles: The lab shared by Keystone and Ince Films has a fire destroying films.
1915- Edison's vault may have had a fire.
1924- Universal (East Coast)Vault Fire includes negatives to Universal films 1913-1924
1933- Warner Bros/First National Vault Fire destroys most of 1928-1930 Vitaphone talkies
1937- 20th Century-Fox (NJ)- Negatives for most of , if not all, pre-1935 Fox films destroyed. Big problem was that original negatives and fine grain masters were stored in the same vault.
"Cleopatra" starring Theda Bara is lost, so is "Way Down East" as well as films starring William Farnum, Harry Carey and Tom Mix are lost. Also companies such as Educational Pictures, World-Wide that Fox sub-distributed for are lost.
1940s- Museum of Modern Art suffers four major vault fires one which is said to have wiped out 2/3rds of the collection including Hans Richter's hand painted color animation Rhythmus 25.
1943- Harold Lloyd's personal vault has a fire. Losses include the Lonesome Luke series and the original camera negative of Safety Last!
c. 1950s- RKO has a major vault fire that results in the loss of Citizen Kane. Other RKO titles believed lost include Case of the Sgt, Grischa, Freckles, Laddie, Leathernecking, The Monkey's Paw, West of the Pecos, White Shoulders, Hit the Deck (soundtrack only survives) and Runaround.
1959- the Cinematheque Francaise has a vault fire that destroys films including Von Stroheims The Honeymoon.
1961- 20th Century Fox's New Jersey vault has a fire where the explosion could be heard for three miles. Lost films include most of Theda Bara's work.
1965- MGM has a vault explosion and fire that destroys the entire contents. Films include A Blind Bargain, The Divine Woman and London After Midnight.
1967- National Film Board of Canada Vault Fire
1993- Henderson Film Lab Fire in London. Destroys the original negatives of Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy as well as Ealing Studios Comedies.
Also at some point, George Eastman House had a vault fire that destroyed part of their collection.
Non-fire destruction
1948: Universal decides to toss out all of its silent library that it still has vaulted. By this time only a few hundred titles remain from the 5,000 films the studio produced prior to converting to talkies. The films, as well as screen tests and trailers, are destroyed to recover their silver content.
Decomposition has destroyed many films.
Paramount produced some 1,200 silents and by the late 1960s only about 250 survived.
Fox produced about 1200 silents and only about 120 are thought to still survive.
Warner Brothers silent library is just as depressing.
MGM silents from 1924-1929 seem to have had the best survival rate.
It is believed that less than 20 of 1917-1922 Goldwyn silents survive.
Frances Goldwyn ordered all of the post -1922 Goldwyn silent films destroyed (except the Winning of Barbara Worth because it starred Gary Cooper) because she believed they had no value. About that same amount of Metros pre-merge silents survive.
Roger Mayer went to work at MGM in the early 1960s and continued the preservation work begun by Louis Mayer of transferring their films to safety stock and insuring back up copies were being made. He couldn't work fast enough to stave off decomposition.
Only about 24% of silents are said to still survive.

The two main fires were the one in 2008, and one in the mid 60's, I forget the exact date, but prints were lost in both of these. Uni said they had copies else where, but who knows for sure...!

I know for sure as I heard it directly from an archivists mouth. The film which was lost in the fires were copies, no films were "lost".
-
That was in the 08 fire, they say only copies were lost in the 60's one also, but others say Universal don't even know what they lost. there was more than just films in these vaults, lots of paper work went with them.
If there was any chance of cut footage turning up. that 60's fire will have taken care of that, and just to make sure the last one will have seen anything else off. As an example, If Uni never lost any master copies, why are some of the Sherlock Homes films made up from 16mm source prints and not off the masters...

Can you please find me an article or something else about the 60's fire? I searched last night and couldn't find one thing.

Uh, nitrate rots.

I read about the 60's fire quite a while back on CHFB, I'm sure if you read through, or try a search it will come up. If I get enough time,I'll have a look myself to refresh my memory if nothing else....

Yeah, please do. I looked over there and found nothing. I found it odd if this fire happened in the 60's there is no news report about it anywhere. And I would certainly like to see actual documentation on this and not just some bonehead on a forum adding their two-cents.

A quick, 5 minute search produced this:
The fire at Universal in the 1960s happened on May 15 1967. But it sounds like no film vault was threatened or burned. It was a backlot / set fire.
http://www.thestudiotour.com/ush/backlot/fire_1967.shtml
This devastating fire destroyed the Little Europe area (including the Court of Miracles). Part of Spartacus Square was spared, only to be destroyed 20 years later.
"Wind-whipped flames chew their way through movie and TV sets on Universal Studios' back lot, causing an estimated $1 million damage. A studio spokesman reported the fire, which sent flames 200 to 300 feet into the air, started near the "The Virginian" set then spread to the "Run For Your Life" filming area."
The 12-acre blaze consumed the "European," Denver" and "Laramie" street sets.

And from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Studios_Hollywood
"Universal Studios Hollywood's backlot has been damaged by fire 8 times throughout its history. The first was in 1932 when embers from a nearby bushfire were blown towards the backlot causing 4 movie sets to be destroyed causing over $100,000 damage.
Seventeen years later in 1949 another bushfire caused the complete destruction of one building and damage to two others. In 1957, the New York street film studio set was destroyed by an arson fire causing half a million dollars damage.
Ten years later, in 1967, twice as much damage was done when the Little Europe area and part of Spartacus Square was destroyed. It also destroyed the European, Denver and Laramie street sets."
Here is what was lost in the 2008 fire:
Destroyed were 40,000 to 50,000 archived digital video and film copies chronicling Universal's movie and TV classic shows, dating back to the 1920s, including the films Knocked Up and Atonement, the NBC series Law & Order, The Office, and Miami Vice, and CBS's I Love Lucy. Many audio master tapes from Universal Music have been destroyed as well. Universal president Ron Meyer stated that nothing irreplaceable was lost, meaning everything will be rebuilt again, at a price of at least $50 million.

A side note for Universal horror fans:
October 25, 1932 Universal fire:
A brush fire broke out in the woodlands behind Universal and swept through fifteen acres of land and destoyed two film sets valued at $10,000. While the main stages and sets were not in danger, the sets destroyed were used in Frankenstein (1931) and the William Wyler film, A House Divided (1931).

He was great in both movies, but then he was ALWAYS great. He truly never gave a bad performance.
And he went from major leading star to supporting actor without a hitch, which almost none ever do!

“It is not true that I was born a monster. Hollywood made me one” --from “KARLOFF, the man, the monster, the movies”, by Denis Gifford (1973).
More to the point, it was Canada that made Boris Karloff. Here are the opening lines of Gifford’s book, “ Boris Karloff was born in 1911 in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He was 24 years old at the time.”
Gifford goes on to explain that the person who was to become known far and wide as movie monster Boris Karloff was actually born William Pratt in 1887 in London, England. And, it was at the age of nine that Billy Pratt discovered what he wanted to do with his life: “ I got my baptism of blood in the parish play. For two nights we put on CINDERELLA. I played The Demon King. It must have been a prophecy. I knew right then and there that this, the theatre, was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
However, the journey from Pratt to Karloff was a long one, and required a trip from England to western Canada. After finishing his formal education young Pratt took some college entrance exams but his interests lay elsewhere. He wanted nothing but a theatre career. His family strongly disagreed, so much so that he was ultimately forced to leave his homeland.
In Karloff’s words, “I was fast becoming a disgrace to the family. In those days black sheep were exported to Canada or Australia. A coin was flipped and Canada lost.”
He sailed from England to Canada in the spring of 1909, spent some time in Ontario, went to Banff, Alberta and on to Vancouver, B.C., where he encountered a theatrical agent by the name of Kelly. Nothing much happened until one day, early in 1911, when Pratt (Karloff) was working in the woods near Kamloops, B.C., he received a telegram from the agent urging him to join a theatre company in Nelson, B.C.
“I left my axe sticking in a tree,” he later said.
And so it was, on a train from Kamloops, to Nelson, that Boris Karloff was born.
In Gifford’s book, the man recounts how it all came to be, “I cast around for a name because I felt the name Pratt was not the best stage name one could choose. I remembered the name KARLOFF from far back on my mother’s side and I took Boris out of the air. The combination has been extraordinarily lucky for me.”
And so it went -- Billy Pratt to Boris Karloff -- all because a young man from England flipped a coin and wound up in Canada. The rest is the stuff of movie legend.
-
He does make a couple of mistakes in that book, do you have it Chris? I must dust mine off for another reading....
Can you spot any mistakes in what you wrote...?

If it were, someone got the steal of the century!
woohoo

I'm thinking that should have been looked into a bit more... What did it sell for, Bruce?

That name on the back almost looks like Boris's handwriting...
Paul and Bruce, the signature on the front image look to be in his handwriting, too, doesnt it?
The way "Karloff" is written is especially similar to the back sig, too. (the K, O and Fs).
-
$31.
The "B"s are completely different.
-
It's well known Karloff changed the way he did the B , it was sometimes with a loop.
Even if it's not his writing, the finding out, and a great still to boot was worth much more than the selling price, Someone did get an absolute bargain... I must start looking to the U.S. again, and sod the postage..

Yes.. the B's are obviously written differently, but both "Karloff's" look to be a variations done in the same hand.

Was this not in the Ackerman Collecting for years...?
I don't think so.
According to the Heritage article (dated July 2008) above:
"This work of art had been in a private collection for many years," said Grey Smith, Director of Vintage Movie Poster Auctions for Heritage, "and when the owner passed away, the estate was interested in having us auction the piece, but told us that a condition of the owner's will required the painting to be donated and displayed for at least a year in a museum or similar institution."
Ackerman passed away 5 months later in December 2008.

How great is that? And to know that people can now go to the Rockwell Museum and view this amazing painting! The pics of when it was created now have a bit more life to them, knowing, too, that Karloff stood with it, for the publicity photos. happy1
Thanks for posting that HA story, Ted.

Maybe Grey can chime in and let us know who did own that great piece of art for all of those years.
But, I suspect that there are reasons behind the anonymity.

Did a little digging into who owned the Bride of Frank piece. It was never owned by Forrest Ackerman. He may have posed with it, but it was never in his possession.
It was owned by a woman named Jewel Evans. When she died in 2006, her son, Woody Welch, inherited this along with other pinup art, and the piece made its way to the Rockwell Museum. Also, it isn't a painting. It was done with color pastels. So it is framed behind glass/plexi as it can smear. According to Jewel Evans' son, Armstrong did not like to use fixatives on his work, as he felt it would alter the color. So even more delicate and subject to smears and damage.
Welch is now an artist and photographer. http://woodywelch.net/home.html
Image of Evans' son with the pastel in his home, in 1960:
And as it now looks in the Rockwell Museum, along with another piece of Armstrong's study sketches:
A direct 2009 post/quote from Woody Welch about the piece and its getting to the Rockwell:
"Couple things you guys should know.....the flesh tone on the monster was aqua marine, a very light blue gray (with a hint of green....just a hint). Rolph Armstrong always painted true color and when he wanted certain color effects on his subjects he would use lighting gels and render them accurately...he didn't paint the monster a light blue gray because it looked ghoulish, he painted it because that was the color of the make up...in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTIEN.
What else,? Oh...I was supposed to own that piece but actually my mom did and spent most of my childhood lying to me that it was mine. And yes, in New York where I grew up, and even when Armstrong was still alive, the monster was on the wall just beyond the foot of my bed. Friends of my mother's would would be shocked that a cute little pre teenager (well...I was!!!) would have to look at the Frankenstein monster before he went to sleep.
Are they kiddin"?
I loved it!!!
Neither of those pictures are accurate and don't represent the true colors of the artwork that well, but the background images of the distant cemetery looks more accurate in the left picture but the colors of the monster look more accurate in the right one. The backgrounds always seemed to me to be a muddy burnt sienna with a bit of BOTH red and yellow mixed in. Remember...this is NOT a painting, it was done entirely with pastels as most of Rolph's work was done.
And....the pastels were NOT FIXED...Armstrong hated putting affixatives over the pastels because it changed the color...slightly...and he hated that. So...if you took the monster from behind the glass and out of the frame...all you had to do was run your hand over the image and ....it would be gone....or at least ruined.
Several photographers refused to shoot it...no kidding!
At one point my mother was going to make posters out of it with a guy named Ray Ferry but nothing came of it because Sara Karloff wanted too much money for her end and I remember my mother was indignant saying, "Well I know that it's her father but it's my...er...OUR painting...yours...uhhhhhhhh." Hardly a clash of the titans between those two.
Anyway, Mom died in '06 and I got a hold of the painting and all the sketches because Mom willed it to me and with the assistance of my lawyer and one of my Mom's friends, I was able to place it in the Rockwell museum.
I will not talk about the Heritage situation as I have nothing to say about them that would be polite. A shark does what a shark does."

Ricou. ;)

Good try, but No it was Ben, if you look at the suits, on the chest Ricou has one divider in the centre as he was quite small
and did all the swimming scenes. Ben was a Big fellow, and if you look at his chest, he has two dividers, he did the land scenes
and walking out of the water etc... Just a bit of useless trivia. thumbup

These two ladies embodied more class than all of Hollywood these days combined.
Great photo, Charlie.

Behind the scenes color photos taken of Karloff, Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney, Jr, from the Oct, 1962 episode of Route 66, called "Lizard's Leg and Owlet's Wing." The episode was shot in black and white, so it's great to see how the 2 makeups looked in color.
Karloff was 75, Chaney was 56 and Lorre was 58, when this was episode was produced.

I'm interested in seeing if that skull face is still on the wall just to the right of the guy sitting down... :D
I see what you mean.. it looks like the "skull image" was created by random touch ups of exterior paint to the stage at various times. My guess is that all the stages' exteriors have been painted a number of times since then. But it's worth a looksee..

Could it be to pump smoke in? (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48630) I read there was a final fire scene... maybe used for that?
-
Yes, of course.. this might be for the fire scene !! hitself
-
Could be right Steve, they are pipes and not cables...
-
I agree with Steve and Paul.
The pipe (it looks like a steel pipe, on the left) and other, on the right, ( a rubber hose, maybe), were most likely for some SFX effect. Possibly flames. It almost looks like a natural gas line-type of assembly, to me.
I remember seeing many of these kinds of various "rigs," during my days in production (for smoke, fire, fog, steam, blowing snow etc) I was always amazed at the devices/assemblies those SPX guys came up with, to get the desired results... often it was trial and error, but they would eventually get it. thumbup
-
Very helpful..Thanks! :)
-
I do think it would be more likely smoke as Steve says. The clear plastic tube would not take too kindly to flames..
The end scenes where the Thing is electrocuted, he does have Smoke emanating also.

Hey Paul,
Yup.. the tubes were for smoke, not flames, as Steve surmised. :) In looking closely at the pic Ted posted, one can see that one tube runs up into the cuff of his left pant leg, near his shoe. Arness starts to smoke in his lower legs, thighs etc, as the electrocution starts, so those must have run up the length of his legs, to a certain point.

Well, that certainly is a Phantom 6sh image. I wonder where that pic was taken? Perhaps at an LA screening of POTO?
It could be real. Do they even make reproduction copies of 6sh that are full, 1:1 scale? Some of the repro images I have seen are much smaller versions, sometimes done on 27x40 size sheets of paper, with large top and bottom border areas.

Wow, Bruce. Amazing. Even tho this auction was back in '95, was the previous owner a big time collector? Do you recall why the owner put it up for auction? And was the Academy the high bidder/winner at that auction?
I recall seeing ads in the paper and online for this screening at the Academy back in 2012. Ugh! Even tho I've see the film so many times, and even had the wonderful opportunity to meet Carla Laemmle at another screening of Phantom, I would have gone to this, JUST to gaze upon this 6sh! bed1

Mummification has gone on, 'round the world, and more recently than 3000 years ago... yet they are the real deal. Maybe those mummified sooner will have an advantage ;D

Howdy dude.
I've been trying to pick up the slack in your absence but -- more importantly -- whenever you disappear for any extended period of time that pesky hitchhiker serial killer rears his ugly head again.
Be careful out there.

More a candid than behind the scenes.. a 1960s shot with Forry Ackerman (holding issues of "Monster World") and his hunchbacked cohort.
And--
Right behind them, striking her best Mark of the Vampire pose, is Carol Borland!

And a shot from The Howling (1981). This was a great transformation scene.. all done with animatronics. The entire film was CG-free!

"Kong in a Junkyard?
This is what appears to a prop of King Kong from the 1976 version of the film. The film had a scene which used a giant animatronic Kong and this looks to be the mold of that animatronic. If anyone has more info on what this actually is, please let us know."

In 2013, The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation was pleased to announce the acquisition of an original Mighty Joe Young model.
One of four originals built by Willis O’Brien, Harry Cunningham and Marcel Delgado. The model was donated to the Foundation by the BFI (British Film Institute) who originally acquired it for the London Museum of Moving Image from the late film historian Leslie Halliwell.
Sadly, the acquisition took place after Ray’s death but we know that he would have been thrilled and delighted that a model, for which he designed the armature and animated over 90% of the film, has come ‘home’. He always said that everyone had a model but him.
The Foundation will preserve the model, which still has most of its latex covering and some fur, for public exhibitions in the future.
It has also been decided to name it ‘Jennifer’ as a tribute to Ray who called his animation model the same.

A cool candid, of Karloff & Lugosi, used on the cover of "Filmfax" magazine for the Oct/Nov 1992 issue. Looks like Bela dropped onto the Bride Of Frank set, between takes, and during a cigarette break for Boris.
Lugosi almost looks to be in the garb and makeup from Mark Of the Vampire, which was also released in 1935, but made by MGM.

4:00AM. An exhausted, tired and muddy Vivien Leigh is holding a small bouquet of flowers that had just been given to her by Arthur Arling, the camera operator for Gone With The Wind.
During the production Miss Leigh and Arling became close friends and she would often confide/complain to him regarding daily script changes, Gable's bad breath, and the never ending retakes. Arling's advice to her was, "Don't worry, when you get the Academy Award for this, it will all be worth it!"
Boy, was he right. thumbsup.gif

Here are 3 shots of actress Ann Robinson, who starred in the original War of the Worlds (1953), at some kind of sci fi convention last year, up in the Bay area. The guy standing with her, holding the alien cut out, (on the left), bought parts/sections of my life size B9 robot reproduction (the robot from Lost In Space), when I decided to sell it off, about 6 yrs ago.

Abbott and Costello met many of the Universal monsters in the series of films they made, but they never met The Creature.
This was as close as they got, when the creature appeared on their live, TV show, as a brief cameo, shortly after CFTBL was released in 1954.

The going away party for director, Victor Fleming, who was leaving MGM and OZ to head over to take on GWTW for David Selznick.
I love the look on Judy Garland's face (who is in costume) as she seems to be looking at Margaret Hamilton, without her witch's hat, enjoying a bowl of ice cream. The Oz figures on the table, in front of the cake, look kind of cool, too.
And Bert Lahr, to the right of Garland, out of costume, as well as the Wizard himself, Frank Morgan, on the far right.

Holding his famous makeup case. Lon Chaney clap clap clap
The photo on the left may have been taken around the time Chaney filmed A Blind Bargain in 1922, in which he played a dual role, one being the Ape Man. The black wig in his makeup case looks like it maybe could be the one he wore for that character.

The mic was part of the the loud speaker set up, so that he could direct the thousands of extras, back in the distance, in the large crowd scenes, who couldnt have heard him, otherwise.

Karloff as the Monster, one last time, in the film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1946). Make up artiste Jack Pierce was brought back to do Karloff's make-up. The scene was shot, but then edited out, for unknown reasons. The scene was a gag in a dream sequence, near the end of the film. But how great would it have been to see The Monster, shot in full Technicolor!
Perhaps the scene will be located again, some day, found languishing away in a film can.
With Pierce and Mitty director, Norman Z McLeod:

The guy on the far right of the last photo sure appears to be Aleksandr Antonov -- who as the leader of the rebellion made it on to quite a few of the posters and promotional materials.

I agree Ben. The atmosphere created in the flicker (like so many from back then, and making the utmost of B/W photography), was top notch.

What is, I'm assuming a colorized photo, from Werewolf of London (1935), showing Henry Hull, Valerie Hobson and Warner Oland. The coloring looks very good on this and almost looks like it could have been in color to begin with.

This wardrobe test photo, of James Cagney, dressed and made up as Chaney's Phantom for Man of a Thousand Faces (1957), probably had Lon, Sr rolling in his grave at this horrendous butchering of his iconic, 1925 makeup creation.

Harold Arlen's home movies with some great footage of the Wizard of OZ cast, some behind the scenes footage. Plus, near the very end, some footage of Garland and Bolger that was shot during director, Richard Thorpe's time on the film. Garland can be seen in a blonde wig.
This kind of material is priceless, since no Victor Fleming-directed outtakes ever seems to have appeared, let alone any surviving footage from the Richard Thorpe version. (Aside from the extended scarecrow dance sequence that was re-discovered a number of years ago).

Test footage made by Ray Harryhausen in the late 1940s, as well as production drawings he did, when RH was considered for a film version of WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Incredible Martian stop motion by Harryhausen, Jeff! It was so great that early SF fans like him, who became pros, were so accessible to later fans. What a great example to fandom he was along with guys like Ray Bradbury, Uncle Forry Ackerman, and Julie Schwartz.

Abbott and Costello met many of the Universal monsters in the series of films they made, but they never met The Creature.
This was as close as they got, when the creature appeared on their live, TV show, as a brief cameo, shortly after CFTBL was released in 1954.
