Ted, who is this?

It isn't Elsa Lanchester.  ;)

I got it here, mid-page http://www.yurock.net/behind-the-scenes-of-the-classic-frankenstein-films/2/
If it's not Elsa, maybe a stand-in or stunt double?

This one's awesome, from the 31 original.

This picture has always intrigued me, considering that Universal kept Chaney's appearance as the Phantom, a secret in all publicity material. I have wondered whether this shot may have been taken at the end of filming.

But I like seeing Chaney in partial makeup, sans false teeth and holding his makeup kit.

And this, in full makeup, and wet, after his underwater walk with his breathing reed:

Ted. I found out who this is.

The model is Jera Strucc. She was photographed by Ben Albares of Malaga in Andalusia, Spain.

Here's more of her:  http://www.litmind.com/_j_s_/profile  ;)

These 2 images are actually an interesting study.

The year was 1946.

Karloff last played the role of the Monster, in Son Of Frankenstein, back in 1939, but here, makeup maestro, Jack Pierce, once again brought the monster to life, for these promotional stills for Samuel Goldwyn film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It is not known if any footage was actually shot of Karloff as the Monster. Goldwyn had to get permission from Universal to use the likeness.

The other gentleman in the first shot is Mitty director Norman Z. McLeod. In the other, is his wife Evelyn. Karloff was 59 when these pics were taken. With his thinner face, he more closely resembled his appearance in the 1931 original.   thumbup

Too bad Universal/Pierce don't get royalties from ALL the likenesses of their Monsters.

Afterall their creations have nearly completely usurped the popular culture vision and understanding of each; even though they are actually literary figures.  When we think of Frankenstein (even though it's really Frankenstein's Monster) we think of the Karloff, green skinned, electrode-necked image - much the same goes for Lugosi's Dracula...

Chris, I would think that anyone using the Monster's likeness/image, (for business or publicity purposes, etc) has to pay some kind of licensing fee to Universal, even today. The legal eagles here might know the answer. As far as Pierce - he was just a studio employee, paid to come up with, and apply, makeup designs.

He was merely a part of the Universal City factory/studio system back then, so he never would have received any kind of royalties, unfortunately.  :-[

Yes if the are using an actual rendition of Karloff as the monster than surely Universal still owns the copyright.

What I am try to get at is that the modern popular conception of "Frankenstein" is not Mary Shelley's original creation but Karloff/Univeral/Pierce's version (which is much the same for Dracula/Lugosi/Universal etc)...

Ask someone to draw Frankenstein or Dracula and likely they are going to draw something very similar to how they were portrayed in the movies.  Even the Count on Sesame Street talks like Lugosi!

I see what you mean, Chris. Pierce, indeed, created iconic images, there is no question about that.  thumbup

Pierce got screwed in the same fashion as Jack Kirby.
Both were paid hourly for their timeless creations.
Too bad.

Ahhhh.  Ditko.
No man alive could put 9 panels on a page with such finesse.
Man was a genius...
