Getting ready to shoot the flaying scene, in The Black Cat (1934). This scene always scared me as a kid.  :o

Thanks.. and i agree...they are cool images. The next time I'm at Universal, I will try and match the stage door framing and mounted fire alarm on the wall, (unless they have been replaced or altered), to find out exactly where Karloff is standing in that photo.  ;)

I'm interested in seeing if that skull face is still on the wall just to the right of the guy sitting down... :D

I see what you mean.. it looks like the "skull image" was created by random touch ups of exterior paint to the stage at various times. My guess is that all the stages' exteriors have been painted a number of times since then. But it's worth a looksee..

This is a great photo, and great pose too. Do you know what are those cables around his feet for?

No idea, unless they are being used to simulate the location of the wiring they used to fry him in the film?

Could it be to pump smoke in? I read there was a final fire scene... maybe used for that?

Could be right Steve, they are pipes and not cables...

I agree with Steve and Paul.

The pipe (it looks like a steel pipe, on the left) and other, on the right, ( a rubber hose, maybe), were most likely for some SFX effect. Possibly flames. It almost looks like a natural gas line-type of assembly, to me.

I remember seeing many of these kinds of various "rigs," during my days in production (for smoke, fire, fog, steam, blowing snow etc) I was always amazed at the devices/assemblies those SPX guys came up with, to get the desired results... often it was trial and error, but they would eventually get it.  thumbup

I do think it would be more likely smoke as Steve says. The clear plastic tube would not take too kindly to flames..

The end scenes where the Thing is electrocuted, he does have Smoke emanating also.
