My first experience with movie posters was in the mid/late 90's when I got my first job at a local theater. As such, I have only ever seen the teaser, one sheet, and vinyl banner in action and then it dawned on me that, even though I am now familiar with half sheets, inserts, LC, WC, 3 sheet, 6 sheet, etc... I have never really known what their main purpose was or seen them in action...
I'm assuming the vinyl banner replaced the three sheet and six sheet but where would have been the main display for the insert and half sheet? Does anyone have any old photos of theater lobbies or other places where these would have been used? I can't even approach the international sizes honestly because I've never been to a movie theater in a foreign country except Beirut and they just had US one sheets hanging up there. But still, it would be cool to see pics from foreign theaters as well to see how they display or would have displayed their posters? (daybills too even though there seems to be a running gag about how horrible they are)
May be cool to see some sweet posters of history 'in action' as it were. Thanks in advance! (no pun intended)

The Universal Horror thread has a bunch...

I bought this photograph a few years back. The girls are posing in a theater hall, and in the back, argentinean one sheets for: Colleen (1936), Things to come (1935), Ya tiene comisario el pueblo (1936) and The Case of the Velvet Claws (1936).

Russ, when I was young I went to several different theatres in my native New York. Soem of these were the old palaces. These theatres would have huge displays that included 1sh, 3sh, inserts, half sheets and stills as well as an assortment of other sizes. On the right side (street side) of the Lefferts Theatre in Queens there was a billboard. 40x60s would be displayed on sandwich board displays.
It was a cornocopia of posters on display.
window cards were never displayed at any theatre I went to, as their main purpose was to be distributed to stores and supermarket for display in their windows, generally in trade for advertising at the theatres

Hey Russ,
Here are a handful of other marquees I quickly located showing various types of posters, billboards etc, from back in earlier times:
Plaza Theater, Piccadilly Circus, UK, 1965. Darling:

unfortunately they've only got one other shot of it, and it is basically a duplicate. as a consolation though, the man on the guitar is none other than burl ives, so i guess we're lucky the poster was in the frame at all.

The Phantom half sheet shown in this photo is from the sound re-release. Copies of it were unknown until just a few years ago when one surfaced.

Peter, was there a date on the one showing the Stauch's Original Old Time Movies, by any chance?
And Sean, would this poster be a OS for the sound version of the Phantom? This was in the other shot that Peter posted:

I am wondering if the easels on the sidewalk thing was a New York only. I don't recall that in the Milwaukee/Chicago markets in the '50s. Large lock frames where a variety of sizes were displayed. Deep entryways with lots of display space. 3 sheets galore. Many frames with an insert or 1/2 sheet and the rest filled with lobbies and stills. But nothing blocking the sidewalk. Of course that could have been midwest ordinance as well.
-
Here are a few I saved off the web, sorry don't know where from.

Jay, as a New Yorker I remember every type of display shown in this thread at one theatre or another until about the late 60s. Times Square when I was a kid was mind-blowing. sadly, I did not learn to appreciate architecture or the great palaces until they were closing them down. The theatre in Jamaica on Jamaica Blvd at 164th street was such a palace with marble staircases on either side of the circular lobby/concession area, actual Ushers and on the mezanine they had skyboxes. That was some theatre

that's where I was born and where I grew up.
the theatre is now a church..
I believe there was still farm in Jamaica as late as the middle 50's.
I wonder if the orphanage is still there. We used to go sledding on that property. It had these great repeating leveled out areas that made it kick-ass fun....

Holy wow! These pics are so cool. They seriously make me want to travel back in time. It's so amazing the lengths it seems like theaters took to promote the films and get people talking about them. It's so odd to think that, in a way, that was it. There was no internet previews or television commercials. I wonder, were there radio plugs for films back in the day? When did commercials become a prevalent form of promotion and how much of an impact did they have on the production of different types of posters/cards? Keep these cool cool pics coming though!
-
radio spots and tv commercials. tv commercials were generally 15/20/30/45/60 seconds depending on how big a film it was.
amongst my earliest collectibles were 16mm trailers of tv commercials for sf movies
-
i must say that i am getting quite the kick out of looking for some pictures (i'm even digging into some of my school's databases, so this is some real research :p) anyway since much of the allure of collecting these posters comes from the fact that they once hung in theatres, i think this is as worthwhile a thread as any. i figured i'd post a bunch more since these aren't the photos you'll find on a google search, also they are more representative of middle-America:
texas - ~1904-1910 silent film (figured i'd post something early, you can see a couple diff. sizes and some real smiles from the folks. i'm kidding, they aren't smiling.)

Those are great ps. thanks for sharing!
And does anyone else agree how awesome it would be to have one of those one sheet + lobby card combo easels?
-
Not much more I can add except another - Wow, this thread is amazing! Great great topic.
I've often wondered the same thing as Through The Stones in his original post. I think I've only ever seen OS's and bigger. Couldn't really place half-sheets, LCs, etc, so seeing these pics... just awesome. Seeing the grandeur of those real theaters is just so cool. I'm sure I went to a theater or two like that when I was a kid for movies like ET or Return of the Jedi, but I don't remember it. I do remember going to see Seabiscuit at The Senator in Baltimore back in 2003. It had the window displays and fancy frames and it was an awesome experience, but definitely nothing like these pics. Keep 'em coming! clap

These images are what I am talking about concerning the upper midwest. These are all theaters I went to as a kid, and you can see that posters were all wall mounted.
Tower theater: This was my favorite. The picture doesn't show the 50' bell tower. The interior was Spanish theme with marble staircases a huge crystal chandelier over an 8' diameter marble fountain.
Wisconsin Theater: One of the big downtown first run houses:

Strand Theater: Another downtown palace:
A favorite downtown one was the riverside with very ornate interior, but I dont have a good marquee shot. That is the only one of these still standing. This shot down Wisconsin Avenue shows the Center and Strand in the background

If this is from 1939, it just goes to show how material was in continuous use over the years. The half sheet is from 1929 and Universal did not re-release Phantom again (Realart/Film Classics did in the late 40s).
Erik, That is a one-sheet frame for sure, but the poster they are using is not one of the eight(!) original styles or the re-release style, so it is either an other company poster or more likely local produced (I say that because of all the other homemade Phantom stuff they have).

OK so educate me here... is this a six sheet or a 24 sheet or some custom job?
Whaddya think those two guys are talking about? "Whaddya mean she's hot? She's hanging from a freakin skeleton hand!" "Who cares! Dead, alive, I'd do her no matter what..."

It is quite clear to me, it is the well known 10.5 sheet format (3 columns of 3.5 sheets). This size was created primarily to fit nicely under "Next Attraction" signs

Being that this poster was likely glued to that board, it is almost surely long gone.
I imagine it was a special "one of". Amazing that they could spend the money it took to make that, rather than just hang a six sheet, and think "close enough"!

Fantastic!

Just one of the many reasons why so much of the old paper no longer exists.
It's a crying shame.

The funny thing about these displays is how few actually use the NSS/studio issued posters. You gotta think they would have been cheaper than creating these giant self-made theatre fronts?
Although they may be even more eye-catching...
-
That Cat People stuff is hilarious/awesome!
-
Nothing like getting your ticket for Cat People right off the kitty's tongue.. :P
Certainly a way to bring in the crowds.. some of those theater fronts almost appear like the old-style fun houses.

Love those pics in posters in action. Great one Ted.
-
First rate Ted, it makes you think....would more people go to the cinema if they were enticed in this way.
Or do we just need better films to be made. ;D
-
Paul, movies today are geared towards the under 25 crowd mostly with edges up to under 35 and mostly male.
That's why so much of what we see are bang bang shoot-em-up movies for these post-pubescent mental midgets. I believe there are quite a few of them in Chicago
-
Sadly I think your right, such a shame...
-

Not sure, Paul.
Movie ballyhoo is still around, but we can always use better films.
Does anyone have one of these?
The movie was lame, but the Surfer is one of my favorite comic book characters.
This would look nice in the den (if I had a den).
-
That Silver Surfer is pretty sweet. I do appreciate that film companies still pull out all the stops and make displays like that every once in a while. Does anyone remember the 20' tall Mighty Joe Young gorilla back in 98? They had two here in Denver and had to pre-measure lobbies to fit it in. The Lost World had a few special theaters where they went in and installed strobe lights for a special version of the preview with lightning. Pixar put out the life sized Sully and Mike statues and life size Bruce and Marlin statue for Nemo. We have the last two here at work. I'll try and post some pics.

I am more intrigued by the pay phones - ahhh 2007 nostalgia

Is that Boris?
Yup.. 'tis he. ;)

Boris was asked to help publicise the film, they wanted him to do some personal appearances, with some photo's, Boris agreed, saying "I'll do it as long as I don't have to see the dam thing". As much as I know where he was coming from, I do think this time he was wrong, as I love the film as do many others... :D

Those top two are very clever Paul and do deserve a clap
As marketing depts. focus more on digital media rather than our beloved posters to get their message across I do get a kick out of seeing them thinking outside of the box with promotions like these... just not very practical to slip into a plan chest or poster sleeve! :D

The Day after tomorrow.. what a great marketing. Superb. I went to see the film straight away, and enjoyed it too!

There is a tumblr --- http://movieinmovie.tumblr.com/ (http://movieinmovie.tumblr.com/) devoted to screen caps
of film scenes where the actors are watching classic movies or movie posters are seen
in the background.
You can easily scan their archive of thumbnails if you want to zero in on poster use.

I thought we had a thread devoted to this sort of thing, but I can't find it.
So, maybe this 'posters in action' thread will do for now.

A picture of the Mayfair Theatre in Detroit, MI, in June, 1943.
Ongoing race riots in the auto plants there are the reason for the overturned, burning car, but the theater marquee shows that Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man is playing. It looks like various lobby cards and posters are also on display, but the photo is a bit too wide to zoom in and see them clearly.

Photography is my other hobby and a friend sent me this link to a new documentary on Vivian Maier.
http://www.findingvivianmaier.com/
I had heard of her but never got around to looking through her work in earnest. This second link is to her primary reference site, it's amazing. If you are at all interested in street photography you should check it out. Really amazing stuff for being more-or-less totally unknown until after her death.
http://www.vivianmaier.com/
From the movie synopsis:
Finding Vivian Maier is the critically acclaimed documentary about a mysterious nanny, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that were hidden in storage lockers and, discovered decades later, is now among the 20th century’s greatest photographers. Directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never before seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.
Maier’s massive body of work would come to light when in 2007 her work was discovered at a local thrift auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side. From there, it would eventually impact the world over and change the life of the man who championed her work and brought it to the public eye, John Maloof.
Why am I posting in this thread, you ask? While perusing her images I found the following. It's from her color self-portrait series and that's her framing Warren Beatty :)

Even a quick look through her gallery and it's readily apparent that composition and her use of shadows/reflections are some of the strongest aspects of her photography. Very cool stuff.

The Globe Theater, on Broadway, NYC. This is kind of a curious image, imo. The alleged date of the photo is 1934. What is interesting is the large poster above the marquee, advertising the film, Frankenstein The Killer, along with that great image of Karloff. thumbup
The theater to the right is also playing a film, but it is showing the 1930, Tod Browning movie, Outside the Law, with Ed. G Robinson, so that didn't help to date the photo.
Is anyone here aware of Frankenstein ever being referred to by that title, even briefly, around this time?

Right?! It boggles the mind. BUT, if people did know, then much much more paper would have been saved, meaning many copies would be floating around, meaning the price would plummet like a stone. I don't really care though, I would still love to own a Dracula Style B for 1,000. Hell, I might go 5k ;D

Right?! It boggles the mind. BUT, if people did know, then much much more paper would have been saved, meaning many copies would be floating around, meaning the price would plummet like a stone. I don't really care though, I would still love to own a Dracula Style B for 1,000. Hell, I might go 5k ;D
Very true!

It opened in 1926 and according to this article, it was "one of America's most elaborate movie palaces." It's really cool going to a theater like that. I saw Under the Skin there last week.

Wow, that is a beautiful looking cinema. I wish there was one like that where I live. I hanker after cinemas from the 80s/90s that were closed down and turned into apartments, let alone something like that.
-
Old school theater, I like it....
-
Beautiful pic Brandon. That cinema looks like a treat :)

There is a one screen theater a stone's throw from my house... they are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year (although it may be the last year :'( ... they don't have a DCP and it's not looking good.)
Anywho.. they posted this picture on their FB and I wanted to share... pretty cool.
I can't make out either poster, but the one on the left appears to be a woman in a bikinni when zoomed in.

This is an old theater I use to go to as a kid. Now they use it more for live entertainment. A little information about the theater:
The Murray Theater is a theater located in Murray, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is one of the area's best examples of the Art Moderne style in theater architecture
The Murray Theater was built in 1938 by Tony Duvall, who built the Gem and New Iris theaters in Murray, and Joseph L. Lawrence, who built the Villa and Southeast in Salt Lake and the Academy in Provo. It opened on 28 October 1938.
The theater operated as both a first-run and second-run venue for motion pictures, and has been extensively renovated and redesigned during its history. The theater currently hosts cultural events, private parties, and functions as the primary venue for the professional wrestling promotion Intermountain Wrestling Revolution.
Here it is in 1938. Just click on the link

Great pics Randy, it certainly has kept its style!
-
Randy, these kinds of old/new pics are so great. I think what I really like in your 2 photos, too, is that even with all the renovations you said had been done to it, they chose to leave in place the original, scalloped stainless panels-- the one below the box office window as well as on the left and right frames where OS or 3 sheets would have been put up. Also liking that the original red, vertical tiles were left, around the windows of the storefronts, too. thumbup

LOL I don't know what makes it a super theater. The last time I was in that theater was when Forrest Gump was playing. I do not think they show movies here anymore. I believe it is live entertainment now. I do know that in the mid 90's I believe the theater caught fire on the inside so they had to renovate the entire inside.

The front still looks to be all original. I know the inside caught fire awhile back so they had to renovate it. Makes you wonder though if there was any old paper stored away somewhere in there. Next time I am in Salt Lake City I will have to drive by and snap some more up to date photos.

I've seen a couple in the last 10 years at random antique shops. They usually are on plywood and are a collage of cut up poster pieces (often from 3 sheets) and hand painted accents and lettering.
Never a title worth drooling over, and I felt they were too hard to store and would be unsellable, so I passed both times.

What a great street. All the cars look exactly the same.
Not even close. In the front row alone you see a truck with dump bed (can't see brand), a Ford Model A roadster sedan (4 door) and a Dodge coupe. In the background I see coupes, 2 door roadsters, sedans etc. Harder to tell models.
You asked someone from then and they would tell you that todays cars all look like the same chunk of melted clay.

Interesting to see so many cigarette ads! This was a mill-town back in the day - aka damn near indentured servitude for most of the working class folks. You can even see the trolly tracks on the right. They ran from downtown direct to the mills outside the city. It makes sense that people might have simply been hoping for a quick movie break and a damn cigarette!
-
Great pic Matt. Now quick hop in your Model A, run up those stairs and pull some of those down!
-
The south was (and is) a heavy tobacco producing area of the country... so maybe that's why the large number of ads?

For a later, RR showing (1940s?) of Frankenstein and Dracula.
A locally/theater made poster ad, it looks like. The photo used of Bela looks like a shot of him from The Raven and Karloff is from Bride of Frankie

They played together on double bills in 38, as this sparked the second cycle of Universal Monster films, and going off the write-up "first time together" looks like it could be one of those showings.

I'm more inclined to think this is mid-30s and earlier than the 1938 double bill showings.
the Lugosi pic on the standee is from the Raven, so it has to be at least 1935 or later.
the Karloff picture on the standee and the one on the marquee are both Bride images.
at very worst it would be the double bill 1938, but I actually think it's earlier

If it is a poster I'm not sure what style it would be. Doesn't match any of the larger paper from the pressbook images Rich posted. Could be a locally made display -- those seem pretty common for that time frame.

That's because the photo is a fake.
Apparently it is housed in the Grand Rapids Public Library Collection??

ELA on the jpeg does look a little wonky around the lettering.... do you have more info on this photo being faked Louie?

Apparently it is housed in the Grand Rapids Public Library Collection??
Well that info came from a blog I located very quickly - http://monsterminions.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/london-after-midnight-at-the-regent/. Says was purchased in the "gift store".
However, if it actually is housed in the collection I cannot find the photo...
-
First off, the lighting on the "L.A.M." is much darker than any other part of the marquee. Secondly the "In" part of the title is in an entirely different font and they would have never used something like this in a marquee, they would have used separate letters of all the same height and font. Thirdly, look at the letters for the other movies in the front. They are glass slide letters lit from behind. Why would the side panel of the marquee have a totally different way of displaying the letters and light bulbs surrounding that section? Also, why is most of the photo out of focus but "L.A.M." is pretty damn clear? Something certainly smells fishy.
-
If it is a fake, the original undoctored should be easy enough to find?

-
Maybe I'll back off a bit from my FAKE announcement. I still say it looks weird to me, but here is a later view of the theater and you can see my third point totally blown out of the water. Still, look how all sides of the marquee are the same shade, not as dramatically darker as the original posted image.:

Maybe I'll back off a bit from my FAKE announcement. I still say it looks weird to me, but here is a later view of the theater and you can see my third point totally blown out of the water. Still, look how all sides of the marquee are the same shade, not as dramatically darker as the original posted image.:
On the photo in question, the areas around the lettering on the RKO and the "roof garden dancing" marquees, which are both facing the same direction, appear to be the same darkness.

Yeah, I see that. Just looks really odd here. I don't know. Still up in the air.

Well that info came from a blog I located very quickly - http://monsterminions.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/london-after-midnight-at-the-regent/. Says was purchased in the "gift store".
However, if it actually is housed in the collection I cannot find the photo...

Seems odd they would put a forged image on their site...

Yeah that's where I grabbed the very clear (although cropped) one above from

Yup. Saw that too. It's small, but here's another image from the Regent showing that the "L.A.M." may be real after all, blows my first theory out of the water. 2 down, I must be wrong. :

That seems highly unlikely having viewed images of the Karibu Hotel. I'd put money on it being a US establishment.

I find that interesting for a strange reason. Polish posters always look stunning when you see them at auction, but they kind of get lost in the mishmash when bunched up like that. US posters actually do better in groups.
-
Are those not Polish travel posters?
-
Yes, mostly travel and recreation posters. I'm guessing that is from a train station.
My favorite is the hunting poster with the deer in the upper row center. I think what is lost in this B&W image is the bold colors in most Polish designs. It's easy to see this poster and picture grey skies and sad people being oppressed by a communist system. In reality that wall is probably more akin to a Warhol gallery with each of the posters having colors something like this:

Love that poster too Matt (and Ari)!
And thanks for sharing the images from that thread. What amazes me is that we tend to think of posters (in all their various sizes) as being the driving advertisement for films but really these photos show that a lot of the theatre frontage was improvised - 'home made' really - and any official posters were just complimentary to the whole ensemble. It would be something special to experience displays like that nowadays...
-
Maybe T will start collecting locally-made, one-off displays like these? You know... True art, not the mass produced crap we get hot over ;D

from a great photo essay of NYC in the 1970s
http://www.vintag.es/2015/02/50-amazing-color-photographs-of-new.html
there are great memories for me in a number of these pictures including the one that shows the Palladium theatre on 14th st where I saw hundreds of concerts from Zappa to Tom Petty to Patti Smith, Hot Tuna, the Pretenders and so many more. They had concerts from Thursday to Sunday and I would have been there all 4 days many times
but this pic of Times Square in 1970 is for this post.

Forgive me if any of these photos have been posted before but I just discovered there is a fantastic searchable archive of photos from the Farm Security Administration (high-res files are available). Overview: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/fsa/
"The photographs in the Farm Security Administration - Office of War Information Photograph Collection form an extensive pictorial record of American life between 1935 and 1944. This U.S. government photography project was headed for most of its existence by Roy E. Stryker, who guided the effort in a succession of government agencies: the Resettlement Administration (1935-1937), the Farm Security Administration (1937-1942), and the Office of War Information (1942-1944). The collection also includes photographs acquired from other governmental and non-governmental sources, including the News Bureau at the Offices of Emergency Management (OEM), various branches of the military, and industrial corporations."
This photo is most relevant to my interests. It was taken in front of a San Antonio movie theater in 1939. In the back you can see paper for "Castillos en el aire", which was a Hollywood-produced Spanish language film, intended to challenge Mexico & Argentina to get a piece of the Spanish language movie pie. It didn't work out:

These ones are quite incredible documents of their times, not all that long ago:
"Flags of the Confederacy displayed at movie house on Lincoln's birthday, Winchester, Virginia" (1940)

A couple less-depressing ones.

Yes, I noticed that too! No wonder the subject of the photo looks so miffed!

How was the remake? I heard it was dreadful. Such a shame.
T
I had high hopes going in and all I can say is watch the original. The new one lacks any character building, suspense or any need for imagination from the audience. There were actually underage kids that should have been scared shitless in the theater all laughing through the whole thing thinking it was a comedy.
What I can say is next month Jaws, the original with the awe inspiring Bruce biting people in half, will be re-released in theaters for two days June 21st and June 24th. I think I will see that happily while forgetting that I wasted 2+ hours of my life on this sad remake.

Very cool.
Disclaimer - I did not take the pics, a friend did.
That's what I thought but no. According to my friend those are all paper one sheets, which makes it even more awesome. I've never seen the likes of that tiled Thing. Gonna try to check it out myself at some point.

Excellent cowboy snap! I wonder how many people took up that selfsame pose during the film's run? I've found a snap from a past visit to Paris - window dressing in a famous department store. Anyone know what the film is?

The sad thing about that pic is that I bet at one time that theatre was a very classy 'motion picture palace' :'(

triple bill!!
yeah right, just the first one sounds exhausting.

The theater where he was arrested is in Sarasota, FL, right next to the Tampa Bay area.
Here's a kinda interesting, brief history of the guy.

Not a poster, but I was watching an old highlights clip of Crystal Palace beating Chelsea 3-2 and noticed the advertising hoardings in the back ground. Seems a strange film to market at football fans in the 70s!

Well spotted! I seem to recall that the film didn't do that well at the box office.. maybe they were just trying hard to get the messages across.

Congorilla (1932)
Looks like a nice pair of 3 sheets there and maybe a 6sh above the marquee?

Mad Love (1935)
Perhaps this photo was taken in a UK cinema, as the film was released there, as The Hands of Orlac

I do like that Orlac. It's amazing to consider just how much trouble they'd go to, to publicise a film. When I was a lad in the 60s, the Regency (the biggest cinema in town) was still putting on extraordinary displays for major releases. For 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' they had a giant detailed cut out of the car with expanding and moving wings fixed to the wall over the entrance. Now I wish I could find a photograph of that!
-
Murder By the Clock (1931)
I like the large clock/hand motif and standee of actress, Lilyan Tashman, who is also featured in the same pose (art), on the US OS. Looks to be some LC and a HS to the right, in the display case, too.

Sounds very cool, Nick. You should try and see if u can find a pic someplace. :D

No luck so far Jeff, but I did come across this 1930s snap which shows the Regency had a bit of a history of making a decent effort!

Cool! Is that a UK quad below the display? Pre-war quads are possibly some of the rarest paper I've ever encountered!
-
Nick, do you know the Dominion Theatre in Tottenham Court Road?
Here's that theatre for The Sound Of Music (1965). That is some display up top, too. thumbsup.gif
(http://i1355.photobucket.com/albums/q719/spitfire3992/DominionSOM_zpskmtkz1xc.jpg)
And if the Orlac pic is from the UK, I would think there's a good chance it is a quad under Mr Lorre's chin. :o
-
I found and liked this image because of the several film posters that were in this theater lobby at the same time. The theater was the Regent, still located and operating, in Toronto, ON , Canada. The lobby photo is from 1930.
Included are a 3 sheet from the 1930, pre code film, called Hold Everything. It was the first musical comedy film to be released that was photographed entirely in the early two-color Technicolor process. It starred Joe E Brown.
Next, in the lower left area, in a frame, is a OS for another 1930, pre-code flicker, called The Devil's Holiday, starring British actress, Nancy Carroll. And last, what I think is a half sheet for Al Jolson's 1930 WB film, Mammy, with Lois Moran.
It's always fun to trip across this kind of stuff, especially if certain poster sizes or styles have not been seen or sold from these films recently, or at all.. (such as the 3 sheet for Hold Everything or the HS from Mammy.) A US OS for The Devil's Holiday did come up for auction and sell, in 2007, for $575.00 USD

Actually, I'm starting to think that isn't a quad... The giant head seems to be covering a door, which even a small door would be at least 28-30" wide, if not more. Also, that appears to be some sort of chair rail along the wall -- standard height for those are 32". If it was a framed quad it would be roughly the same height.
Paul -- I know you said before the war that quads could be found with both horizontal or vertical orientations. Does that apply to double crowns too? Could this be a horizontal DC?
-
It sure does Matt, also Quads didn't go horizontal until around 35/6 so it's right on the change over time...
I'll have a close look as I've jus seen this.
-
Could be a half sheet looking at it. Size looks off for a DC.
Either way, they have his hands the wrong way round...
-
Yeah, I was also thinking half sheet... but I thought those only showed up post-war. Then again, I guess there is no guarantee this image is from the UK anyway.
-
shame it wasn't sharper when zooming in..
-

Very true.
Tho I was going on the fact that the film was not released with the Orlac title here in the US, but was across the Pond. :)

I think you are probably correct, its just that we don't know for certain.
-
If I could get a better view of those radiator's I'd be able to tell you, me being a Plumber an all... ;)
-
Are the gents' b/w pics on either side a possible clue as to overall location?
The one on the left reminds me a bit of Ronald Colman, but I don't think it's him.
I will see if i can find a better snap, too.
-
A little bigger... not sure it has any extra detail though.
-
In looking closely, again, i think this display is set up in a side, curved niche of the lobby, and it is either a window (or possible other artistic element) behind Lorre's head.
The head cut out would be amazing to see (and have of course, too) thumbsup.gif
-
Nick, do you know the Dominion Theatre in Tottenham Court Road?
Never got to go to the pictures in London I'm afraid, although the Dominion is pretty famous. I do however recall visiting the 'Cartoon Cinema' which was adjacent to one of the platforms of London's Victoria Railway Station.

Some Bride of Frankenstein (1935) display & poster goodness. And it still looks Great at 80 yrs old!! clap clap
The Rivoli Theater, in Toledo, OH, 1935, This Monster display was 30 feet tall with blinking, red eyes. The legs straddled the sidewalk, so pedestrians could make their way down the street:

The front of The State Theater in Harrisonburg, VA. Talk about some poster rarities, shown in this shot. How amazing would this photo be, in color! Three sheets and OS galore!! bed1
That is an ambulance, to the right, with the sign on the back, too. More marketing hype, like was done for Frankenstein.

I would bet it has nice bold greens, yellows & pinks as do so many screen printed 40x60s of the time

Does you think it was more locally produced?
Reason I ask, as this style/size/design isnt in the pressbook.

Great pics of the Cinerama Dome up on Sunset Blvd, Jason. They know how to put on a party there, that's for sure. :D

while 30x40's can sometimes be shown in pressbooks (and usually on an inside page away from other posters for unknown reasons) I'm not sure 40x60s are shown in many pressbooks at all and I have maybe a dozen from the 1930s, all obviously printed by the same companies due to format, color & printing techniques

Thanks, Rich.

well we are probably about to see the all time box-office champ Paul.
it would have to be a real stinker to do poorly and if it's being done as well as it should, I can't see why Avatar wouldn't be pushed to second place by this film.
Is there any 'single subject' interest in movie/pop culture today that is bigger than Star Wars?
-
Well, this is one film I can't wait to see, it may even get me back into a proper Cinema, and anything that can push Avatar off the top is fine by me.. I watched the Trailer in my Cinema, and it was ...moving to say the least.. Roll on December the 10th.

That Mae West snap is great fun and the circus poster with the two boys looking on in awe is delightful. Such a work of art and so disposable. I have one circus type poster in my collection but it's a Victorian black and white theatre playbill featuring a lion tamer.

Lovely images again Jeff. Sad to think how many cinemas have been swept away over the years. The link below shows just how many there were in my neck of woods before they melted away. Even in the Sixties there were more than a few struggling on. I distinctly remember being given a 'Godzilla versus King Kong' emblazoned balloon after one childhood visit.

A recent pic of a meeting of various studio heads with John Kerry at Universal Studios. I actually saw this same 6sh when I worked there, and I have to say, it is STUNNING in person. This film is one of my all time faves.
Oh to have that on the wall!! bed1 bed1
It was also on display when Universal did a screening of Phantom at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in 2012. Carla Laemmle was in attendance and actually posed for a few shots, standing next to it.

Great photos, and that 6 sheet. Wow. clap

The frame was made for the poster for the original screening? It has writing on it?
The poster looks great

Not on the frame; that writing is along the top and bottom black borders of the poster itself.

Crikey, missed those Phantom pics. Thanks for posting Jeff, amazing stuff.

I notice these are pristine posters, owned by someone who was part of the production, and they are folded.
Just re-enforces my suspicion of ANY pre 1980 unfolded material.

I lived in Enmore for years, great place

You know Ari, the first time only a week ago, I actually thought Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville area would be a good place to live. My impression has been it looks grungy and polluted with all that car traffic, but having spent time there this month Art Month seeing that the place is full of art studios and it is a youthful and quirky area, I'm now liking it much more! thumbsup.gif

good for you, I miss it.

Tonight was the first time in a year or more I decided to go to see a movie in a cinema. Partly because I just moved to Brisbane (Australia) a few weeks ago and just want to get out and do something. So I picked a random cinema, chose a movie and went there.
Well, imagine my surprise:
New Farm Cinemas (http://newfarmcinemas.com.au/)
Most of the posters are Australian and some are USA. They all look originals.

Very nice. Lucky you to have theatre owners in the area that appreciate this part of the industry.
The older ones look like they are hard mounted?
-
That looks great, very nicely done indeed...sure beats my local multiplex. I wonder if they switch them up every so often. Thanks for sharing.
-
The older ones look like they are hard mounted?
I guess those reproduction upscaled images are glued to chip board or something
I wonder if they switch them up every so often.
A bloke that worked there showed me around and said the owner is keen to buy more so hopefully they swap them around
-
Whoa, is that a Jaws 2 six sheet? Also, did you get the impression that the Gilda and other 30s/40s posters were originals?
Awesome display! And an Orange Mad Max too! ;D
-Matt
-
Steve, very cool and what a theater to just happen to pick to see all those great posters on display like that!
You said the handful of early repros (Gilda, She Done Him Wrong, Hotel For Women etc) were each about 3 meters in height?? Those would be impressive to see too, blown up to that size. thumbsup.gif
-
Gotcha, missed that line of text.
You can tell those posters were assembled by a collector!
-
Does look quite the ticket Steve, Thanks for posting those. May need a trip to Oz..
-
Whoa, is that a Jaws 2 six sheet?
Sure is. I was taken aback to see the six sheet.
In Sydney there in a cinema next to the Sydney Opera House and in the foyer in another huge original - an Italian 4F original of that very expensive La Dolce Vita (the US$45,000 one). That was great to see (I posted a pic of it in this forum somewhere)
You said the handful of early repros (Gilda, She Done Him Wrong, Hotel For Women etc) were each about 3 meters in height?? Those would be impressive to see too, blown up to that size. thumbsup.gif
My photos don't do the size justice but all 4 of them are I estimated 3 meters tall, they looked huge up on the walls.
You can tell those posters were assembled by a collector!
The cinema owner apparently owns a Drive In Theatre which has many others, so I'll go visit when I have some time. Though buying a ticket to go into a drive in I'll want to get my money's worth and stay for the screening, but that sounds sad a single guy watching a film alone at the drive in!
-
Steve, were you able to tell how the folded OS were supported in those frames? None look backed, so maybe he tacked them to the back board with something from behind? (Maybe in each of the 4 corners, for ease of swapping them around?)
-
No, I'd need to go back. Was mostly interested if they were real and from what country. But the way they are mounted looks interesting as there looks like there is no hanger wire, possibly screwed into wall through front of frame via those lumpy circles on the frame

Another marquee that popped up, when searching and looking for Frankenstein theater imagery. This one, for Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
This theater sure did its lobby up right. And if only able to see what look like two 3-sheets, on the left and right, in living color (let alone the whole lobby). faint2.gif

That is a heck of a display for a 70s re-release of Kong, but the Castro in SF has always been known to do things big.
Love how it gets more billing than The Sting.
This original 33 Kong display is pretty awesome also:

Could be, and I would hope it is (Sting was re-released in '77), bu everything else in the photo says earlier to me.
The photo of the Capitol is definitely 1938 though.

This looks like a photo montage to me. The shape of the ape should cast a shadow just like the Castro sign but it does not. The sunlight is falling in from a top right angle so at a minimum the shadow of the ape's left arm would be visible to the left of the shadow of the Castro sign.
Armin
-
There certainly look to be some anomalies there, Armin.
I did a search for any other photos of this Castro marquee, as I thought that a number of people would have snapped a pic of this rather unique and commanding display.
Aside from that one pic, I found no others. Now, that isnt 100% proof of a photo-shopped image, but I think it's worth pondering. 8)
-
I have now just pondered this and my conclusion is that someone photoshoppef out the shadow :P
Actually could they have been allowed to suspend Kong into over the road?
-
I think you guys might be reading too much into the shadow.
If you look at the awning to the left of the words 'King Kong,' you can see the distorted bottom edge shadow of the Castro marquee.
The sun is nearly overhead.
That makes me think Kong's outstretched arm would leave the most minimal of shadows -- if any -- maybe just a bump -- on the wall of the Castro.
Besides, I opened the pic in photoshop and examined the pixels close up. Nothing shopped/cut-and-pasted here. It is authentic.
-
While looking for other pics of Kong attached to the Castro Theater sign (aside from the one above), I found this series of 3 posters that was done by artist David O'Daniell, for a 2011 screening of the original, 1933 KONG at the Castro. Each is 18x24 inches:

If you look at the extreme right pillar there is what appears to be a three sheet poster of Brigitte Helm as Maria in close up, with another showing different artwork on the second pillar in from the left, which looks like the current "poster world record holder". Makes you want to be able to tap on the shoulder of one of the figures outside and say "pssst, just reach up, remove those posters and keep for the next eighty years - believe me, it will be worth it!"

I found this on the imdb page for Things To Come, identifying the theater where it premiered in the US:
"The film drew huge audiences upon its opening in New York City. Advertisements for the film mentioned that large crowds continually flocked to New York's Rivoli Theatre from 9:30am on opening day until the ad went to press four days later.
The initial interest in the film apparently wore off, as the film earned significantly less at the box office than the studio had expected."
Lindy's was located at 1626 Broadway and The Rivoli Theater is next door, at 1620 Broadway.
Here's a shot from 1954, showing both locations, when Rear Window was playing there, and showing some nice advert material as well on display for RW :D:

Jeff, that is a very impressive piece of detective work. Interesting comment about the film not doing well subsequently at the box office. Just shows that all the ballyhoo in the world can't make a film a sure-fire winner. I suppose its theme of imminent war with a collapsed post-war society wasn't exactly the thing to make the cash tills ring!

They're fantastic. I love the use of framing in the last one.
-
Very evocative photos. I particularly like the first one in the series - a tantalising glimpse of what must have been an enormous poster for On The Waterfront. Very appropriate having all the pigeons in the foreground given that Marlon was a pigeon-fancier in the film and also got accused of being a stool pigeon!
-
They're fantastic. I love the use of framing in the last one.
As well as the ticket seller, wearing her 'sunglasses at night.' It was so very Corey Hart of her -- and long before he was around or even on the scene!

I really liked that first one. Two iconic movies trying to outdo each other on the marquee
I also liked the ticket take being oh so cool.

aka Horror of Dracula (US):

-
Wow!
That is awesome.
I wonder just how many employees it took to put that masterpiece together.
-
Really enjoying these. The Dracula almost feels like you'd be stepping in to a 'Haunted House' - the type that used to be part of a visiting fun fair.
-
Not sure whether this one has been aired previously on this thread but if so it is worth another look, although the image is a but hazy as it is enlarged from a postcard:
(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o524/cartinmild1/rsz_1rsz_ben_hur_zpszbo1j4vo.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/cartinmild1/media/rsz_1rsz_ben_hur_zpszbo1j4vo.jpg.html)
It's presumably from the German premiere of Ben-Hur in 1926, which I thought might have been at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin where they premiered (among others) Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Spione and Frau im Mond, but it isn't listed as such in the Wikipedia article on the theatre, so not sure of the venue.
They certainly believed in doing things on a grand scale in those days!

Maybe they are disappointed that it's not Godzilla. ;D

Wow. Now that's what I call a standee!

The fact that it doesn't say Universal Pictures anywhere on it gives me pause.
I don't remember this style in the pressbook, but it's been a long time since I've seen it.

Sean, I have a copy of Philip Riley's Phantom book, and it has a section showing the posters from a copy of the pressbook. The image above is actually what is shown as the Style J one sheet. (The PB image of this particular poster is also missing the Universal name).
There were five 3-sheet styles available (Styles A-E) but none was the one in the pic above.
That being said, what this color photo shows and where it was taken, is still a mystery (Or could it be a photoshopped creation?) Or maybe this is a shot that was taken at Universal Studios here in LA. They certainly would have the ability to have something like this re-created.
-
Interesting. Of course as we know sometimes the images change from the Pressbook to the final release. But certainly the image you posted looks longer than a one-sheet.
do the other one-sheets all show the Universal logo?
We do know there is at least one copy of each of the eight(!) style one-sheets known to exist. Mary Philben was actually given a set as a gift and her nephew (grand-nephew?) was shopping them all around several years back.

The Styles L, N, P & H all look to have the Universal name on them. Styles J and O (which looks like a fact/text style poster) do not look to have the Uni name on them.
And I agree..that color image looks larger than a one sheet for sure.
I will see if I can take a pic of the page that has the images. The original imagery isnt the best, as it was probably blown up a bit to fit on the 8.5x11 book page.
And what a story about Mary Philbin and her great nephew shopping those OS around. Do you know if they ever sold? And if so, at what auction? Or maybe they were a private sale?
She's someone I would have loved to have met. I remember trying to locate her when I was in college. She passed away in 1993, but from what I read, she suffered from dementia in her last years. And I also learned that she lived on Fairfax, in the same house she'd been in for decades. To have only known that then and taken a drive, and gone to say hello.

What's interesting, too, (and exemplary of PB images changing or not being the final version) is that on the PB image of the OS (shown in the large color image above), Norman Kerry's name isnt even completely spelled out. The PB image shows ONLY the letter (N) of his first name.

Sean, here's a 3 sheet from 1923's Hunchback that also doesnt have the Universal name on it (and maybe the final version did have it).

Love these photos...
-
Okie, the story behind the Karloff photo is Universal persuaded him to let the photog get a few publicity photos of him "endorsing" A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN by posing by the marquee. He agreed, with the caveat "as long as I don't have to watch it!" Boris hated the idea of his friend The Monster being ridiculed and "made sport of." There is another shot of Boris buying a ticket at the boxoffice; the expression on his face says it all.
-

With how Karloff is posing, it is akin to him reaching out, a la God about to touch Adam's fingertip, giving him the "life spark." ;)

Im sure a lot of this original, painted lobby art got tossed as soon as the movie closed. I'd love to know if this one was one of the lucky pieces that managed to survive. And if so, where it might be now.

Jeff, I've seen a few pieces of this painted lobby art at antique and junk shops over the years. There was one I should have bought at an antique shop about 20 years ago for a rerelease of one of the Charlie Chaplin movies. I was just about to finish graduate school and the art was about $100. The painted art was gigantic as well and I wasn't sure how to get it home. Oh, well. Though, not quite as good of a story as the time I passed on an original Steve Ditko Dr. Strange page from the good doctor's first appearance in Strange Tales #110. I'm sure we all have some of those stories with hindsight being what it is and all, eh? Okie

Okie,
I snapped a handful of pix of a number of these hand painted posters that TCM/Bohnams had for auction several years ago, when they were on display here, before the auction took place in NYC.
I will dig them out and post them here. Some were true works of art, no question about that.
To bad you didint snag the one you tripped across. Do you recall what the imagery was? Or was it of Chaplin himself?

Cool self-portrait of Ms.Maier with these wildings. I happened to see this shot on the VivianMaier.com (http://VivianMaier.com) website. You can see her shadow on the left, while she is taking the photo.
-
Nice shot by Vivian Meier, I didn't realize that she had done works in color. The documentary that came out a few years ago about how her work, which was never publicly exhibited during her lifetime, was discovered posthumously is pretty great.
-
It was truly an exceptional documentary. She had such a unique eye.
-
Yeah, most of her film was black & white, which makes her few color shots even more remarkable, IMO.
I think Ms. Maier will be remembered as one of the best photographers, and will continue to inspire many other street photographers to capture fleeting moments in time.
-
And there was a great looking poster made for the docu, too, Ben, using one of her self portrait images (re-posting here, in case you hadnt seen the OS):
Finding Vivian Maier (2013)
The fascinating, AA nominated documentary about nanny, Vivian Maier, and her unknown world of street photography. Director John Maloof bought a box of negatives in 2007, when he was looking for photos on a real estate book he was working on. What he discovered was a treasure trove of never before seen or printed works by this rather eccentric woman. Everyone she worked for knew next to nothing about her, as well..
An interesting watch, for sure.

Jeff,
Do you think those four Jekyll and Hyde cast three sheet looking size images are actually three sheets from the studio? Or, do you think locally produced by the theatre? Okie
-
Hey Okie,
Here are a couple pages from the pressbook for comparison of the posters:
-
Hmmm, looks like those four three sheet sized images may have been locally produced. Thanks for the pressbook images, Jeff. Very cool. Okie
-
Jeff,
That pressbook you posted must be from the 1935 re-release, as that insert and WC do not look like what we know to be the original release WC and insert. The logos on the poster also match the lobby cards used for the 1935 re-release.
And just like the lobbies for the re-release do, these posters look much cooler than the original release ones.
And I also believe the Jekyll and Hyde 3-sheets to be locally produced (as was the Island of Lost Souls in the Mummy photo)
-
Thanks for pointing that out, Sean. My bad. In looking back, i see that the images above that I posted from HYDE are from the 1935 RR PB. Doh.gif

Wow, Redman! That's what I call exploitation! Those life sized GILDA standees would probably go for 2 or 3K each, if they still exist, which they probably don't. The BEDLAM display is typical of what NYC Times Square did at the time. Great! And it looks like the manager who did the ISLE OF THE DEAD / HOUSE OF DEACULA display cleaned out the NSS warehouse! He also mixed in posters from HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN, THE MUMMYS CURSE, and I think PILLOW OF DEATH.
-
Some incredible movie paper wall-covering, Redman! Alcide La Flamme is a theatre manager in Albany? Sounds like Rocky and Bullwinkle should investigate that Ritz...
Okie

Great montage of images there, redman. clap clap.
They knew how to do theater lobbies right, back in the day, thats for sure.

VERY COOL looking standees and what looks to be a framed 3 sheet, on the right, further back, for FREAKS (1932)
Also on the right, another framed 3 sh poster for the movie, PRESTIGE (1931), with Ann Harding, and on the left, a framed OS for the flick, THE HATCHET MAN (1932), with Edw. G Robinson.

Freaking awesome photo, it made me watch the film- i've had it a while but you know how it is getting round to watching things :-[
An incredible film. Just read that 30 min was cut but is now lost?
Also read about bloke who played Half Boy, Johnny Eck. Imagine being there and seeing this magic act in the 30s:
copied from wiki
In 1937, Eck and Robert were recruited by the illusionist and hypnotist Rajah Raboid, for his "Miracles of 1937" show. In it they performed a magic feat that amazed audiences. Raboid performed the traditional sawing-a-man-in-half illusion, except with an unexpected twist. At first Robert would pretend to be a member of the audience and heckle the illusionist during his routine, resulting in Robert being called on stage to be sawed in half himself. During the illusion, Robert would then be switched with his twin brother Eck, who played the top half of his body, and a dwarf, who played the bottom half, concealed in specially-built pant legs. After being sawed in half, the legs would suddenly get up and start running away, prompting Eck to jump off the table and start chasing his legs around the stage, screaming, "Come back!" "I want my legs back!" Sometimes he even chased the legs into the audience. The subsequent reaction was amazing - people would scream and sometimes even flee the theater in terror. As Eck described it, "The men were more frightened than the women - the women couldn't move because the men were walking across their laps, headed for the exit." The act provided the perfect jolt by frightening people at first but then caused just as much laughter and applause. The illusion would end with stage hands plucking up Eck and setting him atop his legs and then twirling him off-stage to be replaced by his twin Robert, who would then loudly threaten to sue Raboid and storm out of the theater. 8) ;D

Gotta love it when older and vintage posters can still pull you in and make you wan to watch a film.
And that's the one aspect I love about this hobby, too. Coming across a great looking poster for a movie that Ive never seen, yet still being drawn to it, and adding it to the collection, PLUS that same poster making me want to check out something I'd never seen before.
It's like a win-win, all the way around.

Interesting to compare the 40x60 in the theater lobby with the image from the pressbook. Very different imagery and the pb didnt show 2 styles.
This pic is a bit crappy because it was enlarged from a smaller pb photo, but the imagery of A&C can be made out pretty clearly.

For the first 2 weeks of the premiere in NYC, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney appeared live onstage, as part of the extravaganza - 7 days a week. That had to make for an amazing spectacle for audiences, especially as word of mouth spread about the movie, even in those first 2 weeks.

Now that NY has digitized their tax collection photos from the late 30s-early 40s, I am sure we will be able to spot tons of posters in action.
A quick search found this great one of the wall outside the Apollo Theatre with 6-sheets of Meet John Doe and The Flame of New Orleans, as well as 3-sheets for Adventures of Captain Marvel and Sky Raiders.

The photo is of a bookshop, long gone now, which would have been not very far from where I live. They were displaying a stack of these:
(https://i.postimg.cc/vDz6VCWW/Frankenstein.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vDz6VCWW)
This was the Readers Library edition of the novel, priced at sixpence in old money. There were no stills from the film inside the book (with other films they often put eight stills into the text) but it's a great cover. As with any book from that period dustjackets often disappeared fairly quickly so issues with the d/j can be hard to pick up today.
Can't help with the poster at the centre of the display- possibly a cut-out from an English version of the US three-sheet (called a six-sheet in England at that time)?

Is this last one painted or printed? It's quite amazing by today's standards that a single theater would have an entire wall to promote a movie. It's probably the back of the theater, since I see doors without knobs there, but still, the amount of work for a single flick (one of the best ever, but I assume they didn't know that yet.)
I want that poster.

Incredible pictures, thanks for posting them. I had no idea that the film was publicised to that level (literally) in France at the time.

That's a great photo. I can feel the sense of intrigue from the kid wondering what each film is about (assuming they're all film posters?)

Redman: Yeah, very cool Beauty and the Beast 24 sheet (or, French equivalent size, eh?). Also, the West End advertising is so much joy to see.
Crow: It would have been a lot of fun to see that Ghost of Frankenstein display in person. Great color photo.
