Title: My Zany Home Framed Collection
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on January 03, 2010, 10:56:49 AM
My wacky collection of 56 framed & 5 unframed posters in my 900 sq. ft. apt as of January 3, 2010.  All 100% originals except the Superfly & 9 1/2 Weeks.

I've got room for about 10 more frames, which I'll add soon (hopefully). Not really ready for decent company but they keep me amused....

Now that is a lot of framed posters!  Holy cow, I will be happy when I have a single room to devote to posters.

Yep...that's pretty impressive.  There are more frames than bare wall :)

Mel,  what are those two Star Wars posters from (the white Star Wars with Luke and Leia and the bluish ESB)?  I have not seen them before...

There are more frames than bare wall: A pal described it as a "visual assault"!

Star Wars prints: Those are commercial posters by Russell Walks for the Star Wars Retro Collection (http://www.starwars.com/vault/collecting/20090618.html).  I wrote detailed info about them on MPF a while back (http://www.movieposterforum.com/index.php?/topic/30882-russell-walks-star-wars-retro-collection-posters/).  I like them, some people don't.

Empire Strikes Back:  The top title is blue on some or all ESB movie posters.  Here's one from Cinemasterpieces (http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/empirenov07.jpg).  Mine is definitely an original - the GAU logo is razor-sharp and there are no known bootlegs.

Mel, a quick question, are you married?  I'm only asking because my wife would not allow 10% of what you put up.  Not in 1,000,000 years.  So if you are, kudos to you.  And if you're not, how do you explain 100 women on your walls to your girlfriend, or even date, especially in your bedroom.  Something that I've been wanting to ask you for a while.

When you're not married (like moi) you get to decorate the way you want, buy the sh$t you want (sports cars, movie posters, etc.), gamble as much as you want, go wherever you want, whatev.  It's the Huck Finn lifestyle.

By next week, I'll have 75 frames up.  It's not as gender-unbalanced as you think - 1/6 "alpha male" posters (James Bond, Indiana Jones, Shaft),  1/3 beauty posters, 1/6 sci-fi, 1/3 misc.  All visitors are forewarned!  I also switch out a few beauty posters in the bedroom to improve the gender balance when the chicks show up.

It's true, you have a naked Dane Cook, something Chad probably envies.  1 Naked Cook vs 100 Hotties evens the balance.

Yeah, he's better looking than John Lennon, so I dig it....

Also, I'm putting up my gayest-not-that-there's-anything-wrong-with-that poster in the bedroom, so that should even things up even more:

T, why must you insist on continually trying to get me to come over to your side. Just because you like a naked Dane Cook doesn't mean everyone does. Your French, I'm American. Your gay, I'm straight. Your fat, I'm not. Get over yourself man. Nothings going to change. Plus, I could never be that cruel to break the hearts of so many women in this world by coming over to your side. Nothing against it, just not for me.

So here's my question to you, Mel.  What is more time consuming: Working as a lawyer for our amazing government, or framing your posters?  Does anyone who walks into your office ever say: "Wow, you've got way too much time on your hands, young fellow."  Isn't better for your business to look busy, like real busy, like you're saving the world or something?

T

Oh, and BTW, VERY NICE.

Dude come on T, its the government. Don't question how they spend tax paying dollars. The government is never wrong nor wasteful. They know how to spend YOUR money better than you do and that is why you should be taxed 75% of your income if not more. It's what the people want because they voted all these people into office. Now quit trying to think for yourself and just do what they tell you.

OK, over this "blizzard holiday" I've finally got my iWeb website in decent shape, so check it out:

http://web.me.com/alphamel/My_Movie_Posters/Welcome.html (http://web.me.com/alphamel/My_Movie_Posters/Welcome.html)

I added a short - and ridiculously silly - video tour of my apartment (must have Quicktime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) installed to play), so you'll get a sense of what it's like to live with 76 framed posters (plus four unframed):

http://web.me.com/alphamel/My_Movie_Posters/Video_Tour.html (http://web.me.com/alphamel/My_Movie_Posters/Video_Tour.html)

Let me know what you think!

P.S. All you Mac-haters better repent - I put all this together quickly and easily with iWeb, iPhoto, and iMovie.  (Now downloading, keywording, and organizing 600 movie poster pictures takes a MASSIVE amount of time - you are warned....)

Filled up the dining room with frames this week - my semi-evil plan to completely cover my apartment with frames nears its kooky conclusion:

Fantastic collection, Mel sm1

I see you use different frame border widths. Could you tell me the measurements? Alice, Nikita and the others - width about 1 inch? Then I see something much thinner like Salt and Walk the line and also much thicker one from your kitchen in other topic.

Thanks I use three types of frames - about 1/3 are "flip frames" from Spotlight Displays (http://www.spotlightdisplays.com/) (about $75 each), 1/3 from Hollywood Poster Frames (http://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/) (about $55 each, less versatile but you get much better plexiglass), and 1/3 Trendsetter from Michaels (http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayArticle?articleNum=as0300) (about $25 each on sale, significantly lower quality but good deal for a 27x40 frame).

I really appreciate your devotion and the way your walls are full, I like to get as many up as I can also (ohh err) but dont understand your taste its such a mixed bag. Are these films you like? or just for art? Not being nasty, just usually people have a theme, or something that ties it all together, good work though.
Title: Re: My Zany Home Framed Collection
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on February 28, 2010, 10:53:36 PM
No overriding theme really.  The problem is how to adequately display 700 posters.  And if you walk into any theater lobby the posters are very random too.

I don't think humidity can damage plastic mylar posters and they are very tightly sealed in any event.  My "Good Luck Chuck" paper posters lasted nearly a year without any signs of humidity.

LOL .. My fav is the Princess and the Frog between Striptease and Lebowski ;)

I have to say Im all over the place with my collecting as well though .. a new friend saw pics of my movie/art collection and said almost the exact same thing .. The pieces are all so different and there isnt a common theme .. How do I display them all?

Fact is there is no good way to display a lot of film posters outside of following one actor/artist/grene .. So I just deal with my abstractness ;)

That's the "art of the disguise."  The ROTLA poster is damaged in the lower right corner but the damage is less noticable on the bottom tier.  Same with the ET bike/moon.  It has an obnoxious scratch that is very visible at eye level but practically invisible when viewed looking down.  Why spend $400 to linen-back them when artful frame placement disguises their "issues"?

Sealed or not sealed, humidity gets in.  You should be careful.  If I were you, I'd put my least interesting posters in the bathroom.  Just in case.

Thats the one thing everyone has to love about Eric Cartman.  His passion. To paraphrase a line from one of the great philosophers of the 20th century, the great Rodney Dangerfield.  He cares! About what? I have no idea.

As for the gf. When she say something like "dont you think you have wasted enough money on this stuff" I reply in that very Cartman like manner. :P   ;)

Juli, the Star Wars poster has two very light vertical folds.  It's the "funky text" version - the fourth printing, according to LAMP (http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/posters/db/poster.asp?pid=1900).

They are all originals to the best of my knowledge.

Yes, with 75 home frames (and five or so unframed hung posters) and 8 office frames, I've maxed out my wall space, which is great for my budget!

1/3 Spotlight Displays (http://www.spotlightdisplays.com/), 1/3 Hollywood Poster Frames (http://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/), 1/3 Michael's (http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home) (that's a US art chain).

HPF is the highest quality, but takes 3-4 minutes to change posters.  Spotlights are easy flip frames but plexiglass is lower quality.  Michael's is lowest quality but cheapest.

Mel, do the Michael's frames have any archival qualities - i.e. acid free backing (foamcore or other), UV filter plexiglass, acid free matt (if used)?

We have Michael's branches here in Ontario, just wondering if they are worth checking out...

I get my smaller 24x36 and 18x24 frames from michaels too .. and I buy a 40x60 sheet of acid free foam core for like $12 and cut it up to replace the backings in all of my frames.. I can do like 2-3 frames with one piece so the overall price isnt that bad .. next would be the plexi and I talked to sue about that and a 24x36 UV sheet from her would be like $45 + shipping:(  If I could find a cheaper source for the plexi I think the Michaels frames would be great.. I kind of like the rear loading style even if its not quite the quality as Sue's frames

Fallenangel,

The problem is that most standard "real" posters are not sized 24x36 or 18x24.  Michael's does carry a 27x40 for a reasonable price.  Did you get your foamcore at Michael's as well?  If so, how much is it approximately for a 40x60 sheet?

You Only Live Twice Style C came in, although much more damaged (spray painting) in the back than I anticipated and some of it bleeds through to the front along the fold lines.  However, the front overall still looks good, so I may keep it.  I've got 14 days to decide.

Thats true on the size .. When I get to 1S or Quad sizes I just go to Sue at Hollywood for the quality you cant really beat the price .. Yes I do get the foam core from Michaels .. Its iffy if they will sell it to me though depending on whos working the frame station Ive been told they arent allowed to sell a 40x60 sheet but most others will without question. I just go up and ask for  a 40x60 sheet of their acid free foam core and typically everything is kosher :)

I wish someone would convince Sue to ship to her northern neighbours :(

I've tried and she won't budge.  Maybe with good reason...

Thanks for the tip on the Michael's foamcore - I have a one sheet I am looking to frame on a budget but archivally (kind of an oxymoron I know)

So we had the Apartment Tour today and about 40-50 apartment residents came by to check out my place.   It was fun - mostly got compliments - "this place is fantastic!" One woman stuck around for 20 minutes and took pics of the whole place.  Of course, they were probably thinking "this guy's a total wacko"!

Not a single one had a clue about movie poster collecting, so I gave 15 "mini-lectures" on the hobby during the two hour visitation period.  By far the most common question: "Where did you get these?"

The other 10 apartments on the tour were totally different - expensively & professionally decorated and mine was picked to "attract the younger crowd."  (Most of the residents here are retirees or embassy employees.)

It's to generate "community spirit" and funding for the Tenant Association.

I did have it organized by themes, action/sci-fi/etc.  See the photos from earlier this month.

Me too... I want to see the look of panic on their faces when they realise you are quite insane  :P

On a serious note. Where did you get the frame for the Grease poster above the bed? I now have a few bigs and I would like to frame and hang at least one of them before I pass on to the next life.

So I got around to framing the Australian commercial Jessica I got from Emovie.  It's very nice but it doesn't quite match and it's not quite as glamorous as the mylar Kilian Jessicas, so I spruced it up a bit.  I bought two 27x20 gold mylar sheets ($20, not too expensive) and used it as backing for the Aussie version.   Now it looks almost as good!

The new Aussie Jessica (with mylar backing):

The mylar backing (with trippy reflection effect):

The Kilian mylars:

The Style E Kilian mylar showing full "glitter" effect:

All three together - I bet these have never been exhibited together:

Is the Vertigo one sheet from the 90s cinema re-release?
Title: Re: My Zany Home Framed Collection
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on July 11, 2010, 09:28:51 AM
Vertigo: It's the 1990s video sheet.  Everything else up is original theater.

Frames: I can't keep count.  I've got 10 or so additional frames squirreled away here and there at home and 8 at the office.  I've also got a pile of ten 27.5 x 39 IKEA frames that I need to ditch because they only fit metric B1 posters.

And I'm not the best collector by any stretch of the imagination - I'm "fortunate (?)" that I'm currently not subject to constraints on time, decoration style, budget, or good taste imposed on me by girlfriends, children, parents, etc., so I can take my collection to the extreme.

Dude, just keep it up under control.  I just found these pictures of my apartment in February 2009.  I had a grand total of 7 movie posters and 7 movie poster frames plus a few art prints.

Then things started getting out of control the next month.  A year and a half later, I have 900+ posters and 70 frames in the same apartment.

Course... My "man with the golden gun" is not as cool as yours LOL I have the other version with art similar to Live and Let die (which I also have)

Thats how it happens. You start out looking for something you like to frame and before you know it you have lost your mind. Love of movies and movie posters is a combo that can lead to disaster.
I dont have quite the Mel 900 and 70 ( That boy is certifiable) either but I have in the 200 range myself ( Many are total crap  8))and I now have 28 frames with three more needed to complete the plan. I have basically wiped myself out....Not that will stop me now. I have however pretty much run out of wall space that I am allowed to use   :P

Mel looking at that before and after I must say it once again...I really love what you have done with the place. The material just keeps on getting better and better.

I was putting up posters late one night;

When I was done, 'twas an eerie sight....

Visions of gloom and doom pervaded my humble abode:

Ghouls and werewolves were aplenty:

The Black Cat from atop its sacrificial victim gave me an evil hiss:

Had I made a grave error putting these up?

Some things wicked plagued my dining room:

The hallway provided no respite from this perdition:

In the master bedroom, the vampires feasted on succulent sacrifices:

Hot hellions and vexing victims - charming to the last, no doubt:

I tarried not long in the spooky scullery:

But all was not doom and gloom in these rooms:

So come on by, if you dare,

When you get to my door, better beware....

There are too many scantily-clad-girls-posters on the wall right now to show to decent company.  If I ever get a serious girlfriend, all the risque stuff will be relegated to storage.  However, as long as I'm single and don't have to compromise, I plan to keep the art gallery setup to get the most value out of my collection.

When you get a serious girlfriend, ALL of it will be relegated to storage.  When I first met my wife nine years ago, I probably had a dozen posters on the wall.  Now, I have three, the same three than nine years ago, in my man room next to the garage, and 1, yes one, in the house.

I would recommend martinis and a bunch of hot, easy women.  And it will pain you to do, but you should probably invite your nemesis too... you know, so you can have a nice respectable chat with them.

CJ: "1962 - 2011" - probably messed that up - I was thinking Dr. No was released in early 1962 but it was actually Oct 1962 in UK and May 1963 in US - really just looking for an excuse for a "50th" anniversary poster

The advance withdrawn and regular Pulp Fiction posters side by side.

I've carefully checked my advance poster and I'm 100% convinced it is original.  It meets every test on MPA (http://movieposterauthenticating.com/wordpress/pulp-fiction/pulp-fiction-advance/) perfectly - size, color, etc.

I can't really say which I prefer.  The replacement poster has brighter colors and Thurman has a lighter, more "life like" skin tone.  However, the withdrawn shows the whole body, the credits are less intrusive, and the gun is less prominent.

Which do you prefer?

I prefer the regular for a few reasons:
a) brighter color
b) I like the actors' names stacked on the left
c) logo typography
d) pistol prominence
e) full credits

..ohhh, and did I mention the price?

I'm shocked to say this, but I like the replacement better now that I've seen them side by side.

I should add, that I am in no way biased by the fact that I own the replacement and cannot afford the recalled ;-)

But yeah, the gun looks better on the replacement and as brude just said, the actors names are more prominent on the second one.

I'm still jealous though :-)

The King and Queen of blaxploitation reunited.

"They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother - shut your mouth!"

I asked one of my black colleagues if he was offended by blaxploitation posters and he said no, was just part of the 70s culture, no different than a Terminator poster.

Do you think they're offensive or empowering?

thes efilms came out of an era when heros were and had been white, and targeting white audiences, all of a sudden black film makers made films for black audiences, with black heros, I see no offence. I think the term Blaxploitation is kinda.. hmm.. dumb or wrong, or something, they aren't/werent there to exploit black people, and thats what the term seems to most people.
Although people get it wrong with the term exploitation film in general, which WASN'T a genre that exploited characters or types within the film, it comes from the carnies, who EXPLOITED the CUSTOMERS.

Roll Up Roll UP! went to become SEE! SEE!

So, no, I dont think they are offensive, empowering, perhaps, I am not black, dunno.

The goal is to "sooner-rather-than-later" start buying moderately and occasionally.  I'm close to 1000 posters (and I've actually passed 1000 but have thrown away 100 or so) and many of my sub-collections (Bond, Star Wars, etc.) are complete to my satisfaction, so I will not maniacally buy posters forever.  Plus my display capacity is almost maxed out, which will also put the brakes on collecting.

Wacky cool poster and probably pretty rare. Got it at Heritage's sig auction last month:

King Kong (RKO, R-1966). Italian 2 - Foglio (39" X 55"): "The King of Skull Island (and later New York) is well-represented on this stunning Italian 2-foglio from the 1966 re-release. Ann Darrow looks a little different than we remember her from the actual film, but the Renato Casaro artwork is simply stunning, taking a more modern approach to this simian classic."

Yes, I taped both panels from side-to-side in the back (not the front) with acid-free tape.  The poster was "only" $140 - and only poster addicts would say "only" right? - so I can live with any depreciation that causes in exchange for the ability to display it cheaply.

Of course, ideally I'd prefer to have it linen-backed and order a custom frame but that's the $1,000 solution.

The Officer is a 40x60 that I unfortunately had to trash after I took the picture.  It had become hopelessly warped.  I'll pick up a replacement one sheet at some point.

The Midnight Blue is a UK quad poster BTW, although I have it hanging vertically.  A Google search for "Midnight Blue quad poster" will lead you to at least three UK dealers who have it for $200+.

Otherwise you'll have to check UK Ebay periodically, where I landed mine for $75, including shipping to US.

Of course there are a few exceptions, but for the most part, Mel and I have an extraordinarily similar taste on posters...

So if you were somehow deported due to a bureaucratic error caused by my cousin, I could just move into your house and wouldn't have to change a thing.

I love that Italian Fearless Vampire Killers.  The title is one of my favorite movies, and this poster is the only one I'm missing in my collection.

Give it to me, Mel.

No clue if that is high or not, as this period isn't my area of interest. Good luck.

That is if Dave puts it up. :P

eBay has yielded me some of the greatest deals you could even imagine. Like...

-$40 for a rolled Back to the Future
-$42 for a Style B Empire Strikes Back
-$5 for a Jurassic Park teaser (no credits)
-$51 for a Raiders of the Lost Ark Daybill

I just sit and wait. As soon as somebody lists one for under ten dollars, it's usually mine for a fraction of what it's worth. That's why it always amazes me so much that auctions through Cinemasterpieces get so high.

MY MAN!!!

This is a smart one.  Wait, and you will find.  Run and you will pay.  I agree with you, Anthony, $75 is too much.  You should be able to snag one for $30-35.  Maybe not tomorrow, but your turn will come.  I am constantly looking for about 300-400 posters.  That's one for every day of the year.  If one doesn't pop up, another will, and thus you slowly build a collection at minimal cost.

I am proud to have you on this forum.

Mel packs his walls at a density I couldn't imagine doing, but it works.  I also love the mix of vintage and new, as well as the theme walls.

Glad to hear it, us cheapskates gotta watch each other's backs.

I do however have my moments of weakness. If there is a poster I really want, I've been known to get impatient. If an auction surfaces that I wind up losing, I throw a financial tantrum and try to buy it from people for a princely sum I will regret spending. That hasn't happened in several months now though.

Hi my name is Anthony, I'm six months sober, and I like cartoons.

I don't use the wire hangers.  Hanging frames using the wires "squeezes" the middle of the frame and can create waves in the posters.  (For the same reason I don't use the metal clips to press the backing to the frame.  Those clips invariably create unsightly and damaging pressure waves. That only happens with thin movie posters, not sturdier prints and linen-backed posters.)

Instead, I measured the nail locations carefully and I hang them directly from the metal frame.  This does make them more unstable and a couple of frames have been destroyed when they fell.

I did that in my theater room but I had the inevitable few here and there that were not "straight" The screws would go in at a slight angle and would make it off just a bit .. I spend an hour or more going back and fixing that .. LOL .. the GF told me a I was crazy and she couldnt tell they were crooked although I could just by eyeballing it .. I think that may be some OCD in me.
Title: Re: My Zany Home Framed Collection
Post by: Cj on June 20, 2011, 08:35:06 PM
A little tip - take a piece of 1"x3" maple wood. Cut it to the width of the frame. Premark the holes in the center of the wood and make sure they align with the holes for the frames. Drill your holes in the wood and then take the piece of wood and place it where you want to hang your frames. Level the piece of wood and drill into the wall where you already have the holes preset in the wood. Then install your anchors or if your using nails don't drill all the way into the wall just tap it with the drill to mark the wall and nail in your nail. When your done, hang your frame and then enjoy the posters nice and level.

Does that make sense?? I am more of a doer than an explainer. I just grab stuff and get to work and usually it all works out in the end with not much thought or planning involved.

Just dump the mistakes and start over. As to the money you lost on them, think of it as having had a three year relationship with a girl who seemed great and who ultimately proved to be crazy. I guarantee you would have spent more on her than you did on the junky posters over that time!

Then put it all out of your head, and only think of it as a lesson learned in what not to do in the future.

Or just roll them up, and hide them on a shelf for 20 years.  Then throw away the 90% which is junk, and get back your money from the 1-2 that turn out to be gems.

Naw, I rarely watch movies.  One of these days hopefully I'll escape this hobby and watch some of the movies for which I have posters.

BTW, yours truly designed this flyer and is on the tour this month.  Guess I'll have to put up my "classy" posters (do I have any?):

Great flyer.  What fund are y'all raising money for?

It's hard to believe that you don't watch movies often, considering how many posters you have.  The PF Lucky Strikes, L.A. Confidentials, She Monster, and Black Cat are epic.  A lot of other great ones on the walls, too many to mention.

Long story.  But the gist is that DC is rent-controlled and the landlord is trying to jack up the rent improperly.  So we'll use the funds to pay for legal expenses. (And "we" is a huge number by the way - 450 apartments in one building!)

Or might end up being a head case that will eventually cheat on her:

Tall Dark Stranger Plot Summary...
In London, Helena Shebritch has a broken heart since her husband Alfie had had a third age crisis and left her seeking his lost youth. She meets the charlatan fortune teller Cristal Delgiorno and follows her esoteric advices believing in the power of prophecy. Alfie meets the younger call girl Charmaine Foxx and proposes her. Meanwhile, their daughter Sally Channing has financial difficulties with her husband and aspirant writer Roy Channing. Roy is graduated in medical school but has never worked as a doctor since he had written a successful first novel and decided to follow the career of writer but he never succeeds in writing a good second novel. Sally starts working in the Geller Gallery and has a crush on her handsome boss Greg, while Roy peeps and flirts through the window with his neighbor Dia that is always dressed in red. When Roy's poker friend Henry Strangler, who had written a magnificent novel and showed only to Roy, has a fatal car accident with their other poker friend Mike, Roy misunderstands that Strangler died and he steals his manuscript that is successfully accepted by the editor to be published. Their lives change when Helena meets a widower that is her twin soul and Alfie finds that he is a cuckold and Charmaine is pregnant. Roy and Sally split, and Sally, who had fantasized an affair with her boss, finds that Greg sees her as a co-worker and friend only. Further, her mother will no longer lend a large amount to her to open her own gallery following Cristal's advice. And Roy, who moved to Dia's apartment, finds that Strangler has not died but is in coma instead

It's harder than it looks Stewie. It took several hours to get from A (damaged small source photos) to Z (full-blown 27x41 polished poster) and very few people on this board could do it. But of course a project like that is not the equivalent of creating original art.

Well in my defense .. I literally have a half a dozen tubes on my dining room table (aka where I flatten most posters out before they go in the flat file) as well as nearly a dozen spread out in each corner of that room and then twice as many in the corner of the living room (room adjacent to the dining room).. I typically open the tubes asap and get the posters on my table but one must have gotten shuffled to the side here or there :P

Actually, that is a "near mint" copy I obtained from a very high-level collector and the folds are very light.  Tough to find a better copy than that.  I know you're a new collector.  Over time, the folds on older posters will bother you less and you'll realize they "come with the territory."

IMO, one of the most perfect posters ever made.

From the Wikipedia article:

Universal "devised and co-ordinated a highly innovative plan" for the picture's marketing. As early as October 1974, Zanuck, Brown, and Benchley hit the television and radio talk show circuit to promote the paperback edition of the novel and the forthcoming film. The studio and publisher Bantam agreed on a title logo that would appear on both the paperback and in all of the advertising for the movie. The centerpieces of the joint promotion strategy were John Williams' theme and the poster image featuring the shark approaching a lone female swimmer. The poster was based on the paperback's cover, and had the same artist, Bantam employee Roger Kastel. The Seiniger Advertising agency spent six months designing the poster; principal Tony Seiniger explained that "no matter what we did, it didn't look scary enough". Seiniger ultimately decided that "you had to actually go underneath the shark so you could see his teeth."

When are you going to start framing posters to the ceiling?  And I don't me hanging down I mean framing them on the ceiling like you are on the wall, that would be something to behold!

Doors, floors, and ceilings are off limits.  I ain't that crazy!

Nice selection Mel, it looks great. I especially like High Powered and also Appointment in Honduras.

So your open house is BYO snacks and drinks? (didn't quite get that line on invite), doesnt matter, hope it goes great.

Try to take some pics of the peoples startled reactions!

You probably should have some or all of the posters on the invite on display.

Good luck, wish I could be there...

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be maniacal movie poster collectors!

Took me most of three days to plan, organize, frame, store, photograph, etc. SEVENTY-FOUR (74) FREAKING posters (including two orphan quad posters) in my apartment.

They're not perfectly organized - that's impossible given space/frame considerations - but you'll see certain themes.

Can I ask what frames you are using for your linenbacked one sheets - i.e. The Hour Before Dawn?  - Spotlight? HPF?

Four Hollywood Poster Frames and two Spotlight frames are sized for LB posters.  The Spotlight posters (currently 7 Year Itch and Blonde Sinner) all have larger flips.  All my HPFs have thin borders.

What a shame. I think your House on Haunted Hill, War of the Worlds and Fearless Vampire Killers are stand out posters for me.

Mark

I mean I don't buy Italian or French 2+ panels or US 3 sheets anymore.

The US 1S, UK quad, Japan B1, Italian 1P, and French 1P are the "right" sizes IMHO.

The HOHH is a French 1P by the way.

The big uns look awesome, assuming you have space to stand back and appreciate them. Just one, two or three of those huge ones in a house, and no others posters would make a house look great I reckon, thats what I am aiming for... actually I just have 3 six sheets up, thats all.

Try swapping out a 4F Italian in a gigantic frame with a piece of plexi that weighs a bunch in a room that's too small to maneuver it in, all by yourself!!!  You have it easy with the hangers in my opinion.  I'd hang mine that way but it would probably get ripped up.  I'm wanting to swap mine out and hang a new one I'm getting in, but I dread trying to get the frame off the wall and out of the room it's in to be able to swap it out, then back into the room and back on the wall...

The hangers most definitely do NOT work as advertised. They're supposed to work on pressure alone but in practice you have to tape the clips to the poster, which most collectors won't do.  (Personally, I don't hesitate to use acid-free tape on sub-$500 posters, even if it does reduce their value.  Better to improve their appearance and get them displayed rather than mouldering in a drawer somewhere awaiting expensive linen-backing that will never happen....)

Yea, I've got some relatively cheap 4F's that I'd love to display, but it's not worth the hassle of taking down the frame and swapping it out, I'd opt for the hanger route but the only spots I have to hang that large of posters they'd probably get damaged.  I'm thinking about a swap this weekend though since I received my mint LA VAMPIRA NUDA 4F, it's way too nice to store away.

I thought you gave up on the Spotlight frames. See them in several of the pics here (Dune and Hot Rod Rumble)

When I bought the Spotlight frames 2-3 years ago they came with extremely thin clear plastic overlays.  I noticed that many posters came out crinkled/wrinkled on the sides due to the flip pressure.

Subsequently Spotlight started providing thicker "dual matte/clear" overlays.

I replaced all the old thin overlays with the new ones, which seems to have solved (or greatly reduced) the crinkling/pressure wave problems.

Three sheets are a lot of time and trouble but they sure look cool.  I completed a "poor man's" linen-backing of One Girl's Confession in about an hour.  Taped up all the holes and tears the best I could with acid free SS tape, taped a few pieces to the back to cover up large patches of missing paper, taped both sections together in the back with acid-free SS tape, THEN taped the overlap in the front with acid-free DS tape. Took me another 30 minutes or so to get it properly hung with a posterhanger from posterhanger.com (http://posterhanger.com/).  'Nuff said.....

The kitchen is the only place this larger frame (29x43) fits.

I did substitute the only classy B2 poster I have:

Marilyn has been stored away for now. Unfortunately, I only have a few frames that can fit the LB posters.

The kitchen is the only place this larger frame (29x43) fits.

I did substitute the only classy B2 poster I have:

Vivien was definitely put in the right place... She can reach the dishes.   ;D

It is amazing how many themes Mel can put together from his collection.  A displayed poster looks a 100x better than storing your posters via computer images.  But then not everyone is as zany as Mel!

Looks good, Mel. That Vertigo just shines...such a great poster.

Have you noticed any difference in the DS version compared to the Video version (other than the line in the credits about being available on VHS and Laserdisc)?

I just compared them this morning. The video one sheet is quite good and equal in quality to the DS version.  Too bad it has such an obvious video line because I paid quite a premium for the DS version.

Thanks - I have the video and am tempted to upgrade to the DS one day. I quite like the VHS/Laserdisc line though, it's quite unobtrusive and something to look back on and smile about in 30 years time when physical media could have long since died.

Well I shelled out $200 for mine, which is way too much but is the going rate these days.  On the other hand it is only 3% of the cost of an original.

Mel me thinks the last place you have left for a framed poster is in bed beside you.  You can even go petite, moyenne or grande - whatever you feel like any particular evening.  Hell maybe even get right crazy and bring in Rita for an extended weekend visit.  You might as well just get it over with...

They look great and good on you again for getting them up on the wall to enjoy.

Obviously the plastic strips are strong enough to support the weight (linen), but I wouldn't have thought so.

Yes I think a frame would make them look even better.

Genuine question Mel; what is the biggest poster you have actually had framed?

Reason I ask is because whilst looking through the James Bond thread I noticed the 40x60 TSWLM frame. Have you ever thought of getting a six sheet framed or something of a similar size and making it a centre-piece? Or even putting a 40x60 as a centre-piece?

I cannot speak for Mel's largest .. but I have some bus shelters that are 48 5/8" x 70 5/8" framed along with a horizontal bus shelter 37.5" x 77.5". :)

Now If I could just get Charlie to Linen my 4 and 6 sheets I may think about framing them as well! :)

When I saw it next to that poster and it being October and all I thought he had some "scary" contacts in. I never even considered that his eyes were that red! :)

Now I heard a rumor somebody on this board acquired a brand new girlfriend.  I also heard that this somebody fought tooth and nail to keep his precious posters up on the wall.  The woman ultimately won (they always do), leaving our sad board member with one lonely poster to express his resentment.

that's one sweet wall - r57 (or military) Thing reissue is simply one damn cool poster - not sure why the duotone works so well but it does - yellow is better then orig green imo and always amazing how reasonable this poster can be purchased - rarely exceeds 150.

For those haters who won't display high valued items - this is a win/win to have on a wall.

My top '5' favs in order of likes/wants...

1.  Thing
2.  She Monster
3.  Curse / Undead
4.  Cat Girl
5.  Mothra  (only in 50's could someone dream up a killer moth taking over the world)     happy1

Another wall done, this is the preliminary arrangement, likely to change:

This is one of my favorite posters.  I used to own a postcard of it when I was a kid.

Personally, I would put it up all alone on the "Cat People" wall.  When you have so many posters up, it's difficult to even see one.  They all mesh into one big colorful piece.

Of course everybody knows that I was recently - and deservedly - given a lifetime appointment to the rank of High Lord Excellency of Hyper-Elite Collectors.

However, I surprised even myself by obtaining this NINETEEN star one sheet for I Wanted Wings (1941 US 1S), the debut of the diminutive yet sublime Veronica Lake.

What? You say that five star is the maximum?

You know, on second thought, somebody might think I'm weird by putting a Psycho poster in the shower, so I've decided to go with a friendlier vibe. This is a 30"x40" Hawaii travel poster (seller says it's late '70s, I'm thinking 80s or 90s):

Now what to do with the Jaws posters in the other corner?

Hey, that fan-made Jaws poster is all wrong.
I'm almost positive there was no such thing as a triple-skeg board in 1975.
In fact, I don't think doubles were even available.

The hienie's quite nice, though... wynk

Why don't you move to the 'burbs (wherever that is where you are), but a nice four bedroom house, the walls will open up to you and your framed collection will seem small again

Why?  Plenty of room on the ceiling.

Too much asbestos risk. You need flipping frame like a flipping book on the walls

I thought I was being a bit extreme by putting up eight posters in my office but I'm working with an attorney at the Department of Justice who has 50+ of her own paintings displayed in her office (and in the nearby hall and conference rooms).  They're quite good by the way....

From August 2009 to October 2014 I photographed my rotating MP frame collection in Wash DC. I had 70(!) frames in that "zany" place!

If you want to be a poster nerd, you can peruse all 779 pics here:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/MoviePosterCollectors/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1936000636683870

But don't you have better things to do, like trying to get laid, ha-ha!

Anyways, I perused these photos for the first time in three years and picked out 38 faves:

My three sheet frames rocked! I lost them in the move to Charlotte, got to get another!

On the LA Confidential, you said you searched hundreds of hours.  Was it an obscure source that you eventually found it from?

Holy mackerel.  Are you planning on making your new place a similar style?

On the LA Confidential, you said you searched hundreds of hours.  Was it an obscure source that you eventually found it from?

Yep I searched endlessly for that poster on Canada eBay and every else I could think of.

One day it popped up in the US international section of eBay. The seller said she found it an LA poster dealer shop. I made an off-eBay deal for $600. When I was forced to consign my collection it sold for $3100, one of the few times I made a big profit on a poster.

(http://i1320.photobucket.com/albums/u536/HereComesMongo1968/LA_zpsmnvvvc6j.jpg) (http://s1320.photobucket.com/user/HereComesMongo1968/media/LA_zpsmnvvvc6j.jpg.html)

A few others popped up afterwards and Bruce posted the following info:

Important Added Info: Note that this rare poster (which measures 27" x 40" [69 x 102 cm]) has been shrouded in mystery since it first surfaced in the hobby several years ago! It was first seen in the collection of a well known Canadian collector/dealer/researcher who received the poster in 1998 from a theater he was connected to, when the movie was being re-released, and he surmised that it had been created for that 1998 re-release (possibly to capitalize on the many Oscar nominations it had received), but he noted that it had a 1997 copyright, and he could not explain why. It was not until 2013 that we learned much more about this poster! A different example of this poster was consigned to us by a former Warner Bros. executive who received samples of many alternate styles of one-sheets, some of which were apparently never distributed to theaters. The executive received this poster at the same time as the regular 1997 poster, so we think it was surely created at that same time. Perhaps some of them WERE distributed to some theaters in 1998 at the time of the Oscar nominations (perhaps only ones outside the U.S., including the one in Canada, where the first one surfaced, and that makes sense, because the poster has no ratings, which would indicate it is an international one-sheet), but that does not change that it is a 1997 poster! Since that time, we have auctioned four more examples of the poster (although it is possible that we were re-consigned previously sold ones). Now we are auctioning this poster for a seventh time (but again, it is unclear whether one or more of those seven were re-consigned, so we don't know how many of the posters are currently known to exist). The poster we are currently auctioning was consigned to us by a couple who ran a movie theater when this movie was being shown, and after showing the movies, they saved several posters that they especially liked, and this poster was one of them! So this poster comes to us directly from the theater that received it in 1997!

WOW! Super nice collection. Sorry it had to leave your hands. I wonder if I have any of it? Probably not, but you never know. Where did you get those marvelous 3-sheet frames? I have (at least) one 3-sheet that i'd love to have framed. Thanks for sharing...

Forgot to mention that a designer of the LAC sent me a mocked-up image:

Yep I searched endlessly for that poster on Canada eBay and every else I could think of.

One day it popped up in the US international section of eBay. The seller said she found it an LA poster dealer shop. I made an off-eBay deal for $600. When I was forced to consign my collection it sold for $3100, one of the few times I made a big profit on a poster.

Nice hunting, and the big payout is pretty cool, although the hunt, itself, was probably about as rewarding.

Over the years, there were a few times I was intent to find a few rarities.  I made hundreds of phone calls until I finally found them, which was probably a combination of a variety of things.  I never made any $ from them, though, unfortunately.  Lawl.

Great writeup there from the eMovie team, and some interesting stories, also.

I must say Mel its nice to see your previously lost images.  Also nice that you framed and displayed so many pieces.  Even the porn stuff.  Ok especially the porn stuff.

From what i gather there was a disturbance in the force when you left... so welcome back.  thumbsup.gif

A requested photo from Round 1 - I've got 10,000 MP-related images on my iMac, so sometimes it takes a while:

Why is it pink?  It's supposed to be yellow.  And when you mentioned Psycho in the bathroom, I thought the original  uhno not the re-release.  The re-release is okay in the bathroom, especially the pink one.

Dubious pink? I was/am again a poster nerd! During my hiatus I used to laugh about my hanging out on the forums so much, over-posting, etc.
