I really dig superhero movie posters.
I think the recent BATMAN and SPIDER-MAN campaigns are top shelf.
While I have turned the page on my comic-book collecting habits long ago, these posters inspire me.
This morning, Russ (Mean Sheets) posted a link on his very excellent blog to another blog featuring the 12 Worst Movie Posters.
I have to agree with most of them...they are stinkers.
I guess Yahoo has given the new X-MEN posters a tongue-lashing...and I agree.
But, what about this pathetic new THOR poster?
I guess this is what happens when the design company draws a 'blank.'
Here's one of the two offending X-MEN posters. Absolute garbage, eh?

Maybe some of you out there have absolutely terrible movie posters to post.
Let's see 'em.
Use this thread wisely... wynk

Anything Alamo or any of those new graphic crap. Canna stand looking at 'em.
-
I don't think these bad artworks are the fault of the graphic design agencies who often have talented and enthusiastic staff. In the end the executives of the movie companies make the decisions on what is on the posters, and these people usually have zero taste as we can see in the abundance of crap film product that is coming out of Hollywood.

Point well taken, studio execs and ad agencies share the blame.
An agency and/or designer (for lack of a better term) designed these travesties and then sold the studio on their use.

Unfortunately the biggest obstacle in the creation of well designed posters (for the big films at least) is quite often the actors agents who have far too much influence on how the posters should look.
As for the executives, when it comes down to choosing the final campaign they are often swayed by the results of market research into what they think 'should' be on the poster as apposed to what actually serves the best interests of the film.
Sadly, not enough of these studio executives have the stones to trust their instincts anymore.

I really, really respect Thierry's collection. It's hard not to, especially since he has so much stuff I would cut off my hand for. However, since he gets so much stuff for free, there's a lot of stuff in there I could never see myself owning... I mean, I have access to free posters, but that I don't take them. How does he have the space?
Maybe he has them just to humor whoever gives them to him.
Unrelated, but I've realized I often mention I would somehow brutalize myself to obtain a poster I really want. When I say this, it doesn't even necessarily mean I couldn't afford it, it just means I don't want to spend my money on it. The fact I would rather cut off my hand than spend $50 is rather disturbing.

I'm slightly disappointed in T there... He threw out posters with a slight grease stain, and kept those :o

there's a lot of trash in there

Yup, I puked in my mouth when I took a second look at that abhorrent image. puke
-
That Bruno has to be the worst in terms of revolting I've ever seen. But any kind of commercial advertisement that leaves a lasting image has served one purpose - to leave the person who saw it with an image he/she will not soon forget, even if it is puke2 and laugh1 simultaneously. When someone is walking past a movie theater or browsing through Blockbuster Netflix, he/she or that person's significant other may recall that image and decide to see the movie because of the impact that the image had on him/her. I can picture a guy walking past that and about to puke2 followed by the girlfriend/wife saying "let's see that one." :D
-
On the other hand, I imagine lots of couples saw that poster and both said "anything but that".
I think Bruno was aimed at those who thought Borat was hilarious but that it did not go quite far enough with its gross-out humor, and this poster sure speaks to that audience.
I thought I would hate Borat, but I actually liked it quite a bit. I haven't been able to force myself to watch Bruno.

You could be right, Bruce. They may have crossed the line between "funny" and "disgusting". South Park walks that fine line, but it is exceptional in that sense, and the guys who started it are truly geniuses.

Disagree entirely! I think that poster is beautiful.

I debated on that one.. as it is a bit better than the others. Personally, i just find a slew of small photo images all strung and lined up together in rows to be uninspiring. Perhaps that should be a sub thread-- "Poster That Do Not Inspire" ;)

I think it works with Tree of Life because they're snapshots, like a photo album, of the character's lives. Since the movie is about the entire lifespan (and time span) of the characters, the poster fits textually. Also, Terrence Malick movies are symphonies for your eyes. They are beautiful pictures.
-
It is the great thing about how images or art affect people in various ways, and the opinions it generates. "Beauty in the eye of the beholder," as is oft quoted.

Was surfing around online a bit and came across this advance for the movie, OUR IDIOT BROTHER. IMHO, this poster is so blah and boring. It lacks any creative element.

Schlock starring the SCHLOCKTHROPUS!
-
Have to disagree, Mel.
That is a very cool, cult classic SCHLOCK poster...directed by John Landis (his directorial debut), featuring Oscar-winner Rick Baker's ape suit (with Landis inside of it, too). Classic 'carry on' monster and maiden artwork.
I, for one, would love to own it.
Maybe you were thinking of another poster?
-
SCHLOCK, to me, is more camp. The artwork, stylized look of the ape, his expression and overall design and the blond babe are all done quite well. And it was created artwork, not some bad photos, simply cut and pasted, or overlapped together.
Sure, some camp can also be bad, but i find this appealing in that regard.

Easy there father time. ;) I jest you not good Sir. I'm not a big fan of any of his poster designs. The key word being design. I like illustrations, organic shapes and depth, not clever geometric collages. To each their own, but they are not my cup of tea. Maybe I don't get it, but I'll take a Maniac 1sh instead any day.

While it's a shame that an iconic horror masterpiece such as The Shining received this poster design, I have to agree with Dream Warrior on this one. I had a rolled Shining and sold it. That's how much I hated the design. I would put The Shining poster near the top, if not the very top, of bad poster designs for really good movies. Not to disregard Saul's other works of art though.

While THE EXORCIST poster image has become rather iconic, I rather do like the imagery of the one on the right, as well. Im not sure if that was for a video release, but the melding of the 2 images, and the glow of her eyes is pretty intense, IMO.

I like the colouring of the second, the eyes not so much, if the 1st got rid of the big block of colour for text (in a perfect world I would probably trim it off), used the photo style of the second, id like it, I love the shot. I admit I dont like purple. I understand the significance of using purple, but to me its an ugly colour. I would have preferred a religious styled painting related to the movie. Same goes for The 9th Gate, the imagery in the BOOK could have been used. Not a photo of JD (i know he was a draw card for many)

I really like the original Exorcist design. In fact, it was the first poster I bought.

Not in my book, you bunch of haters.
My suggestion? All those who don't like their Saul Bass SHINING posters (that is if any of you have copies), send 'em to me. I will find them good homes.
I will open a SAUL BASS SHINING SHELTER, where they'll all get bathed, neutered/spayed and put up for adoption to kind and loving collectors worldwide.

It may not be the best but it is still better than either Bring It On, or The House Bunny, imo. The skull and 'evil assistant' are both drawn well, (heck-- it was drawn; it isnt just some (bad) photo slapped on a poster). The color combination I like, too. Good contrast. I would take this over those other 2 any day. pcorn

While not as pathetically crude as some other designs in this thread, the artwork actually has absolutely nothing to do with the film. Either the illustrator had never seen the movie or he was asked to or chose to ignore it. When I saw the poster a few years back on ebay, I just had to get it. The movie is actually quite entertaining.

I was hoping this movie would be something special, with Burton at the helm. The poster is unremarkable, IMHO, as well (they could have done SO much better on this). Depp looks about as intimidating as a 14 year old, who has just done his first, typical "all white face / eyes circled with black" vampire makeup, for a Halloween party.

But Eva's poster is a ok in my book....

Burton is terribly overrated.
-
Have to agree
-
Burton has made some fine and rather good movies. From the trailer for DARK SHADOWS, it looks like he went for a campy and cheesy spin on the story (complete with silly one liners and asides). It would have been interesting to have seen this remade in a more serious, dark and dramatic tone.
-
Burton overrated?
Disagree.
Everything the man has been involved with has been worth watching.
IMO of course.

I am a fan of his work, but I totally agree... His most personal films - Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands - are his only completely successful efforts.

Ed wood was a good film, as was Scissor hands, haven't seen sleepy hollow but I have a feeling I will like it. I didn't "mind" APES.
I don't think he is a bad film maker, cripes should see what I watch sometimes ;).
Sweeney todd might have been good if you ditched the GOD AWFUL SONGS. Thought I was trapped in my old bedroom while my wife played that crappy Buffy musical episode over and over. It LOOKED fantastic however. Funny I forgive Brigadoon for its music, because it looks so great. Hmm.
I like Directors with their own style and "vision" - Auteur. I guess some peoples style doesn't quite sit right with some people. Much like Lynch or CRONENBERG or (take your pick).

I like the character posters, there's those face profiles and full figure individual posters that aren't too bad. I want the Eva Green ones. The face one should be in a Bus Shelter format, the other one where she is standing in front of a car I'm not sure what format that is in. Unfortunately I can't find those two anywhere except print copies from Hong Kong in really small sizes, so maybe the studios aren't printing those. The Depp face and the family are the only ones available at the time, and a Quad of the family.

The Depp portrait has been overly manipulated to the point of it looking like a graphic, rather than a photo, as opposed to the rest of the cast. The others have all been retouched, too, but still look like "real" people, at least. ;)

-
Um, What about the Batman movies, Nightmare Before Christmas... Alice in Wonderland, and Beetlejuice?
I should have highlighted the word 'completely'.
Beetlejuice is another of his more personal films and is very close to being completely successful. Alice had a nice performance by Depp, but was a complete failure of a film otherwise. Batman had a great performance by Nicholson and a solid turn by Keaton, but nothing that Burton brought to the table added anything to the film (see my quote and Kevin Smith's stories about Burton as to why or just watch any of the Dark Knight flicks). His trademark overly cartoony style simply didn't fit the material, though it was better with the darker Batman Returns. Songs from Prince? Way out of place...
NBC, which he didn't direct by the way, is a mediocre film, with mediocre songs (I love Oingo Boingo, but a little Elfman goes a looooong way). Both James & the Giant Peach and Coraline were far more interesting films in the stop-motion genre. Burton did write the story, but that has aways been his Achilles heel...
-
Funny how opinions differ... I find those films completely successful, and Burton was apart of them.

I don't think this is too terrible... Someone put some time into making that it... I read up on the film and supposedly the baby was a victim of a rape and sucked blood from his mothers breast. So could the red ring symbolize the breast... And also kind of looks like a baby being born through a bloody you know... maybe representing a vampire being born versus created... The strange thing is that the child in the movie is a boy so what is with the vale?

Skating stuff from the 80s is quite the ticket right now. Skateboards of pretty much every brand are selling pretty darn high right now, which is surprising since back in the day there were only a few big brands that were highly sought after (Powell Peralta, Sims, Vision, maybe a couple others). The skateboard guys are almost like the Mondo/print crowd in how intensely they bid on stuff, and it's kinda similar how they're really going after "reissue" boards, where limited editions are made from old graphics and they sell out in a few minutes. Doesn't really surprise me that skating posters are selling at that price, especially that one since it is a classic from the 80s. An article gave Thrashin' a very high review. http://www.fast-rewind.com/thrashin.htm (http://www.fast-rewind.com/thrashin.htm)
-
thrashin' was very popular at the time, in the skating scene, but for the dickwad, straight, clean cut rich skate kids. Like the ones that loved Tony Hawke.
Like BMX movies, these things will continue to get good $ compared ther ther quality of film and/or poster. Again as always (usually) its nostalgia.
I am looking at buying a skateboard, went into 2 shops yesterday, but they just are stupid shapes these days. I found one that was OK (ot of a LOT of weird ones). Maybe after tax return.
-
Yes, Virginia, somebody paid $190 for this POS from Heritage this weekend:
The answer is in the poster itself. Totally Insane
-

rofl1 Wow. I've never seen the movie, but I never would've guessed that people have that opinion about it, or that people think there is some special group of skaters who love Tony Hawk.
I think you're right about the nostalgia aspect.
-
haha well I was only kinda exaggerating, I mean there were the more rough and ready skaters (maybe skate punks) and the cleaner trendier type. Tony Hawke was an example as he looked so squeaky clean compared to say Alva et al.

ahahhhaaa. :D

I loved Thrashin'. Not enough to pay 190 for it though.
-
It's the new Barbarella... :)
Brill. ;D
-
but there's at least 28 Thrashin' posters. :'(
-
Yopu never know..
In another few years, it, too, could break the 1000.00 barrier, especially if some look at it as the "new Barbarella." laugh1
-
you know, people laugh, but people forget what makes these crappy bits of paper worth ANYTHING at all, I mean really, gift wrap is cheaper (usually)
Was not long ago at all, even 2 years ago, people thought I was joking when I was asking for early Horror Video posters, and I made an offer that for certain titles id trade TITLE FOR TITLE for Video for Theatrical. (this offer still stands BTW).
In the last month Ive sold most of my better video posters and I am kinda kicking myself.
Skateboarding was HUGE and when as ex skaters get on a bit,, we miss the good old days roling around, and if I liked Thrashin' at the time, id prob buy a poster for it - lucky for me I hated it.
Its nostalgia folks.
(of for some people its my sandcastle is bigger than yours).
But I'd bet a HILLS HAVE EYES aussie Video 1 sheet that the buyer has fond childhood/teen skateboard memories or its a gift for someone who does.
(still one ugly poster)

Wait - I don't like her music (although some of it is catchy as hell and gets stuck in my head >:( ) or what she stands for as a "manufactured" pop star
It has to be something about her kissing a girl and liking it and me liking thinking about her liking it

Those are all delightfully atrocious except for Water for Elephants, which I think is about as good as modern "photo" posters get.
They're at least trying to use a creative image - woman reclining against an elephant is unusual and striking to me.
The rest are just "here are the stars of the movie" junk....
[BLACK SWAN IMAGE]
Ditto above. It's a very striking image. A good photo poster.
Loathe the poster but can't hate Katy for some reason - which troubles me!
I like Katy Perry too but that poster is just terrible - she looks awful and the concept is just dopey.
-

To support Ari in his assessment of this poster:
- her hair is gravity defying
- The elephants face complexion is that of a trout. Possibly super over use of the Dodge tool in Photoshop to lighten
However as I haven't seen this movie, there may be a reason for the above in the storyline.
-
You buy wrapping paper in bulk? ;)

Unrealistic hair? Come on, poster designers have been doing that since the days of Methuselah:

This is a classic example.

bah humbug. :P

Almost any poster that s little more than an actor's headshot or photoshop collage is bad. The days of movie poster "art" are pretty much history. These days it's the Alamo Draft House posters that are keeping original movie poster "art" alive.

Have I missed something here..... I know we all like different stuff, but I don't think I've seen a Alamo Draft-house poster I like. Is it possible to post a few? Good one's.

Best part of LASERBLAST were the David Allen miniatures.
Too bad they were so few and far between.
-
Wrong again Mel,
Top film, great stop motion effects and as Ted mentions miniatures.
Good over the top exploitation campaign.
The reason I rarely read this thread.
I shall try and find a BAT poster to post, shouldn't be hard since they are common as mud.
:P
-
Yeah great movie, great poster.
Mel if you don't like it, send it to me, I'll pay for postage.
Armin
-
I think the poster is pretty cool, and I agree with Ari, it's much better than anything for Breakfast at Tiffany's.
From the comments section for the Laserblast trailer on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRaXI8O1IKM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRaXI8O1IKM)
"I made my friends watch this because they didn't believe me about it being the worst movie ever.....
They still haven't forgiven me
I still haven't forgiven me
*cries in corner*"
The stop motion and plot look cool. Another movie added to my queue. 8)
-
The poster is indeed, very cool. I agree with you, too, Neo. It is original, created artwork. And I think the alien in the upper left is thumbup
It is MUCH better than any of the "cut n paste" photo montage posters, or many of the digitally enhanced photo driven posters produced these days.
I would take Laserblast over, for example, these 2 bad/boring posters (found on a rapid ebay search) any day: puke

Although this review was none too kind (http://www.needcoffee.com/2009/06/17/warriors-wasteland-adverse-video-review/):
1982 was apparently a great year for crappy movies to find their way over to American soil.....If it wasn't for the 70s music played by a kid on his first synthesizer (with his mother yelling at him from downstairs while banging a broom on the ceiling), I don't think I could have made it through the first seventeen minutes of this film....
Best line:
"Here lies the 'Great Scorpion' in pain. Victim of the big bad queers, The Templars. All you have to do is ask and they dare, 'I need your help.' You are not so great now, Scorpion."
-
Top movie, from the man that bought us inglorious bastards, Bronx warriors, Keoma and much more,
One of the greatest scenes in film involves a very strange initiation ceremony.
Forget mad max, this is a post nuke classic.
His new film, has such an all star cast that will make anyone gasp.

Really?
I thought the 80s had many powerful and dynamic posters for several terrific films.
I always considered it the last great decade of movie poster art.
But that is the great thing about this hobby -- the diversity of style and taste.

Okay, some of you might like this one, but I am very disappointed.
I think it fails on all levels and then -- add insult to injury...
Check out the typo in the blurb above the title. wtf?

Here's the trailer, which has been up since July and has probably been
posted here already.

I agree, that the poster is a little disappointing. Very ironic that the poster for a movie about one of the best movie poster artists, is a floating head, typo, bland poster. :-\ They wouldn't mass print it with that typo, would they?
Looks like a good movie. Thanks for including the trailer. thumbup

I love the typo! It's like those old IQ tests to see if you were reading...most excellent, gotta get me one.

Ted,
Are you talking about the "i" in "illustrator?" It's no typo. The word was printed with a capital "I" is all. Take a look: 8)

Rosa. That drawing of Bogart isnt horrible, do you think?
Not the absolute greatest, but we have all seen worse; artistic renderings of him (or other actors/actresses) that bear NO resemblance to the actual person. If it werent for the credits, you wouldnt have a clue who you were looking at. ;)

I quite like image. In fact, I like it a lot.. but his name = NO, NO, how can is it possible???... uhno

It's not a nearly as horrible as the last 5 minutes of the film... That was all that I saw and it's scarred me to this day..

I always liked the original 7 min. sketches on SNL. It was a a clever Sweeney creation. But I could never imagine how the character/story could be sustained for 90+ minutes.
I've only seen a few scenes and they all felt strained.

+1
The images are more portrait, showing necks and some shoulders that blend into the rest of the poster.
At least they are not that "severed head" style. ;)
That's why i was never as keen on these 2 styles as much, even tho they are Uni horror classics. I like some other styles much better.

Grr.. when the hobby goes bad. I'm obsessed with the musical 'Anna' (gee I wonder why???) but as it was a tv film there are no original posters for it except one.... Japanese 2000 release
(http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/734398_10151792005957345_710900685_n.jpg)
what in the hell were the designers thinking? But as it's the ONLY poster I can buy for the film (coupled with the fact that I've spent nearly 2 years trying to find one) I had to buy it when it finally came up on Ebay at a ridiculously high amount (£50 which isn't a lot but for this? It's £49 too much!). Damn. So I bought the original first press record for it as well to compensate. That's going on my wall.

Since the last few posters have moved into the space genre I present for your viewing pleasure possibly the worst poster that I own the three sheet for the 1984 film the Ice Pirates. Sadly pictures of this poster actually make it look much better than it is.

I think I'd put tha on my wall. :) can't remember if the movie was any good, I think not, but might be ok for a laugh nowadays.

The movie to me was so bad that it was actually good enough to watch every ten years or so. All I can say is be careful of space herpes they'll kill ya. Think I should linen back it and put it up.

You two are way off on that Casablanca poster. But I think we can ALL agree that this Italian poster for 12 Years A Slave is remarkably dreadful for showcasing a white actor with a very minor role for a film about slavery!
