Title: Dr Bill's Lobby Card Obsession
Post by: Dr Bill on December 10, 2016, 02:52:16 AM
So it begins. And what better way than two of my favorite things - Winona and Dracula. A 12 card German set of Brom Stoker's Dracula.

Awesome first post and super nice cards. Congratulations! That WAS a good movie. Gary Oldman is amazing. The only drawback was Keanu Reeves (fingernails on a chalkboard describes his performance to me. He was just AWFUL,..and was the ONLY ONE who was bad.)  Thank you for sharing.

Well, I can ignore Keanu if I can watch Winona in that see-through nightie. I've had a thing for her ever since Edward Scissorhands. Then she shows up in Dracula, Alien Resurrection, Star Trek - well I think it was just meant to be...

Great set of cards, Dr. Bill.
A fine film on all levels (except for Keanu, I agree) and your cards look minty.
Well done.

Thanks. They do look mint for the most part, even better in person than the posted images. As an added bonus, I'm meeting some great sellers.

Here's the US 11x14 Herzog Nosferatu 8 set, minty fresh. My all-time favorite vampire movie, an exciting find.

I really enjoyed looking at those cards in detail, thank you for sharing.

They really reminded me how excellent the art direction/production/photography is in those two films. So atmospheric and beautifully put together.

Thanks guys. This Nosferatu film is really haunting - the cinematography, the creepy music, and the best Dracula since the 1932 Dreyer version. Couldn't believe what I found when I first saw it - and it's good quality res in 11x14 size. My favorite set to date.

Well, not exactly. In my newby ebullience, the first cards I bought were four of the US set, mint, offered at a great price. Now finding the remaining four in mint condition hasn't been easy without buying an entire new full set. Lesson learned.

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here

Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
'Relax' said the night man
'We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave!

Nice set.  I actually had to check my website to see if I own it.  Lucky for you, I do, otherwise I would have hunt you down.  So you know, the movie changed names (I guess Satan is not a commercial title) and there is a different set of 8 cards titled The Female.  I won't post it here because it's not my thread, but you can see it on my website.

Trust me, there is a lot about Bardot I don't have.  But I'm in no rush.

And yes, it is a US set.  The name change on foreign films is actually more frequent than you think.  They would sometimes translate a title from its original one only to realize it didn't play in the US and make up something new.  I've seen it many times.

Thanks, brude - glad you enjoyed them. I saw Blood Wars today. Kate kicks ass the only way Kate can. But Lara Pulver was also evil hotness as the villain. Remembered her from True Blood and Sherlock. Kate still looks amazing.

Thanks guys. It's much appreciated by this noobie collector. Although I've been collecting for about 6 weeks now, the card count is over 700, so I've become addicted and may soon need an intervention.   :o

brude: I've contacted Jeff about posting nekid ladies, and he seems to be OK with it - but I don't want to offend people here, or especially get banned six weeks after I've joined! I'm still thinking about it - they're large sets, from France and Germany.

Just put a NSFW warning at the top of the page and filler at the top, so if they are likely to be offended, they'll at least be warned. Take a look at Steve's (50s) brilliant posters in porn thread http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,11637.0.html  as an example. Always a delight seeing your stuff. CHEERS!

Sorry, but Flickr has started closing accounts for nudity content, so until I can find a host, no Caligula or O. Their TOS also forbids uploading copyrighted material, so all my images might disappear as well. Seems to be random enforcement, so no telling what will happen.

I see shades of "10" in that last Tarzan card with Bo Derek crawling on the beach and looking mighty fine.  :D

Thanks, Jeff. I doubt she'll ever be seen as anything other than "10", in real life or the movies. John Derek definitely had a "type" in mind when he chose his women - Linda Evans, Ursula Andress, and finally Bo - all perfect bodies. If only they could act.

I just got Bo's Bolero lobby set, but still don't have a safe place to host the nudes, so on to other things...

So true.

And Linda Evans and Bo Derek almost could be sisters, based on their similar look.  sm1

Bill,
Apologies if you've covered this elsewhere on the forum, but how many pieces, or sets do you have in your LC collection, and how do you store them? I'm always interested in how folks keep their collections.

Hi Chris,

I've only been collecting a few months, so my collection is tiny compared to many here. At last count I had about 90 lobby sets. These range from small 4-card sets to much larger ones like the the 25-card Barry Lyndon set. Most are 8-card. No idea how many individual cards I have now. After finding this site I ordered a supply of 100 11x14 polypropylene sleeves and archival foam board backs from Bags Unlimited. Each set goes into its own bag after inserting the precut the foam board. To date these are stored in a plastic storage tub like the ones found at Walmart or Target. My first one is full, so I need to get a second one soon, as well as more sleeves and backs.

I've been a cautious collector mostly, buying relatively inexpensive sets that go with my favorite films, many from France, Spain, and England. The more vintage high-dollar stuff will come later after I gain some experience. Keeping track of my collection has become an issue, so I need to database it somehow so I know what I have. I use Collectorz software to track about 1,000 of my blu-rays and DVDs, so I need something like it for LCs. I started collecting LCs mostly because I don't have a lot of storage space left. I've been a collector of vintage cameras for years and have more of them than I can display at any one time. Besides, my wife thinks collector = packrat...

Thanks for the info., Bill.

Sounds like you're on the right path as far as storing goes. I don't collect many LCs, but the ones I do are stored in similar fashion.

As far as the database goes, I've found the easiest, and most customizable option is a detailed spreadsheet. I use Google Drive and Google Sheets to store all of my poster photos and my database, respectively. I've attached an image of a portion of my database sheet and the headers I use that I can sort by if I need to. Hopefully it is of some help or at least gives you a few ideas.

Thanks, Chris. I'll probably use a spreadsheet like yours when I get the time to put one together and enter all the data. I've been spoiled by Collectorz which reads the barcode on the case and downloads cover pics and all other information about the film. It even syncs with my phone so I can check my inventory when I'm out shopping. I wonder if there's an online database for posters like IMDB for movies?

Thanks, Jeff. I'm really enjoying it. This site gets most of the credit. I am humbled when I look through the poster threads though - some of them are just gorgeous. Maybe I'll stick my toe into poster waters eventually. I have a lot to learn. An original mint Forbidden Planet poster of any size would be better than sex. For a while.

My first eMoviePoster auction - I had lots on my watch list, but they were bunched together, so timing was everything. I finally narrowed it down to a few I really wanted and got all but one. I battled someone for a Star Trek V set till it went over what I've seen it go for on ebay and had to let it go. I won some very nice sets at very good prices, so I'm happy. This was a tough set to photograph - the pics don't do it justice.

Yeah, I think I won 10-15 items from that sale.  I raised the price of Breakfast Club from $100 to $250 ($250, really???)  I didn't really want it, certainly not at that price, but that guy, Galaxy2001, was pissing me off...  ;D

Btw, you can get pictures from Bruce.

I've been part of many cut-throat vintage camera auctions on ebay for years - I've become fairly resistant to the emotional need to win if it's something I know a lot about. I've learned there will always be another one if I'm patient. I learned my lesson years ago when I won because I was determined to win at any price, then would find a Buy It Now a week later, in better condition, for 1/3 the price. A few of those Doh! moments, and the lesson eventually stuck. Most of the time...

I agree with you, but sometimes it's fun.  Pissing off the other guy (or hoping I did) made me happy.  And if I had won it, oh well, i will probably be worth that 100 years from now.

Yeah, that's something I have to be cautious about - buying posters/LCs for an investment isn't a good idea when you're a green as I am. I just love films, and this is a fun way to extend my enjoyment of them. I already have a stressful job - this has to be fun. I'm a visual person, and just love high quality images on some the cards. I really need a Cinema Paradiso lobby set though...

Buying posters for an investment is never a good idea, no matter how good you are at it.  Collect because you like it, not because you think it's going to be worth something one day, because chances are it won't. I invest on a lot of things, posters are just for fun and because I love movies.

Had a quick look around on your behalf on my saved links.  Popping a quick search into emp's archives seems to turn up more results for Malena than Paradiso.

This set does seem to be a rare breed.

Good luck

Not sure you did.  Galaxy2001 was bidding lots of stuff up to insane levels.  I picked up 6 sets myself from that auction
Grease 20 Anniversary
Risky Business (fills to complete set)
Something Wild
Flashdance
LA Story
Hot Car Girl

But I lost a few to Galaxy2001.  The guy seemed to be everywhere and didn't seem to care about price.
$320 for "Just One of the Guys"
$315 for "Clue"
$188 for "Caddyshack"

Really??
But... None of these would get up there if there wasn't some other guy hanging in there.  All these auctions had somebody pumping up the price.  And I note you were the guy on Caddyshack at the end.

I was the guy on 12 Angry Men also and a bunch of others.  12 Angry Men, I really wanted, especially because it didn't have pin holes, if I recall correctly.  I hate PHs on lobbies.  But then I got busy trying to get something else and it slipped through.  But like Dr. Bill said, they all come back at some point.

If people want to "bid people up", I can't stop that. But what I CAN stop is people trying to "make the guy pay through the nose" and then they get stuck with the item when the other guy doesn't bid again, and then they try to back out of honoring their bid.

Every week or two I get a "I bid by mistake" email from someone, and if it is obvious they were doing the above, I tell them they must honor their bid or they can't bid anymore. And I stick to it. On eBay, they can just abandon that bidder ID and immediately open a new one. I want only real bidders who honor EVERY bid they make.

I bid on items I want and my strategy prevents me from paying more than I am willing to spend on an item.  I always love it when at the end of an auction, some guy is bidding me up by $5 a crack repeatedly, extending the auction for multiple cycles.  It just shows how some people just can't understand how your system works.  I just place my best bid shortly before closing and then walk away.  If I don't win it, I don't feel bad because the other guy obviously overpaid.

I must admit that I have once or twice bid by mistake.  It is always because I didn't read the description carefully and am bidding too much on some lesser quality paper, or misread it was a re-release.  I have never asked for a retraction.  Instead, I honor my mistakes and simply hope someone else bids more.  The system runs smooth and I build up a bit of goodwill among the sellers as a 'good' buyer.

What if I want to make the guy pay through the nose and still pay without complaining if I win?  It has happened a few times and I won.  I've lost more than I won, so it evens itself out in the end.  And the one person that wins is you, Bruce.

You DO honor every bid you place, so you are completely free to bid as you please. You also never complain. 99% of the 41,000 buyers never complain either. It is that 1% though!

This is a perfect bidding strategy when the auction house plays fair. You can easily tell, by when you bid $100 and a bidder comes in who bids $90. Then you bid $142, and the bidder bids $138!

At those places you need a different strategy.

Press kits with stills..... I think you are gonna need a lot more storage tubs, Dr Bill!  ;D

Nice images in the Sleepy Hollow kit, too, by the way.

Yeah, I had to order more sleeves and backs too - never thought my first 100 would be gone so soon. I do have a few more press kits coming from Sunday's auction, but that one was my first impulse press kit buy, from a guy called "spookydave". I'll slow down soon as my business travel picks up, but I still have loads to post.

So it begins. And what better way than two of my favorite things - Winona and Dracula. A 12 card German set of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Such a good looking LC set and this image is great, imho. Oldman's fluid and smooth "removal" of the blood from that straight razor is delectable.  devil 2

Yup - this is my second favorite vampire movie, next to the Herzog version. Oldman is beautifully creepy and Winona is even more delectable in her see-through nightie. Yum.

Thanks, Ted. As I look at more and more posters here I've begun to wonder if the low-hanging fruit I post is really appropriate. It's stuff I like, but probably just "cheap BTDT paper" to many. No one has really made me feel that way - just my impression as I see all the exotic and expensive treasures on many threads. Admittedly I'm overly enthusiastic as a beginner, so every new set I get is an exciting addition to me. Just hope I don't look foolish by posting so many. Anyway, your encouragement means a lot. Thanks to you and all the others who have commented. Just tell me to stop when you've had enough.

I recently bought a lot of Spanish and German sets because of your thread and I have more coming.  I had forgotten that some of them are pretty cool.

My partner in crime, Holiday, was once collecting Japanese posters at a time when not too many people listed them on public forums.  I personally didn't know anything about them.  I now own more than a thousand of them, and I suspect a lot more people collect them because of his enthusiasm.

So to answer your question, keep 'em coming.  It's good for the hobby and your love for them is infectious.

Yeah, keep them coming.  I am enjoying them greatly.

I recently picked up German cards for HAIR and French cards for RENT.  If you want lobbies for anything beyond the early 90s, you need to explore the foreign markets, and accept that the sizes will be different.

Wellll - there's one you might especially like - when I looked in at the end of the auction we were bidding against each other. I had too much going on at the time to notice. You should have made one more bid - I was ready to fold.

Otherwise known as a DC, it is half the size of a 30x40" UK quad, albeit it is presented in portrait style, as opposed to the UK quad's landscape style.

So, 20x30".

You raise an interesting point and this question came to me:

How available (or not) were posters, LC, WC and the like to wannabe, every day collectors back in the 1950's? Was the material available at all? Or just what might have trickled out and was taken by theater employees?

And if the stuff was somewhat available, how would the "average Joe" be able to get it? Also going to local theaters and asking? Or buying from small shops that might have begun to appear on the scene, that also carried film books, etc?  dontknow.gif

Good question. As often as I went to the movies starting in the mid-to-late 50s, I don't actually recall seeing lobby cards displayed. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention as a kid, too eager to get in see the latest sci-fi or horror flick. Since the cards I have say they are to be returned to the NSS, I assume lots of them were. Were there fines if the theater owners kept them? And if they were returned, what became of them? Where were they returned to? Are there old forgotten warehouses full of them waiting to be discovered?

I always loved the lobby card display when I was a kid in the 50s.  It was usually in a 1 sheet case, but not the most obvious one.  The cases facing the street always had 1 sheets (or larger) so they could promote to passing cars.  The lobby case generally was on the alcove facing the ticket booth.  It generally had 3 or 4 lobbies and a half dozen stills.

Here in the UK and for the Bond films, I only ever remember seeing a lobby card display for Octopussy.  And that was 1983.

And yet the cards were still being produced up to and including Quantum of Solace.  2008.

For whom were these cards made?  A rhetorical question....

I know you don't need an answer, but 99% of these sets are sent to us from South America, Europe, and Australia, and zero of them come from North America and England, so it gives you a sense where they are still being used. I suspect certain countries very much like lobby cards, and THAT is why they are still being made.

I need an answer.  I don't know about South America, Australia I understand, but Europe (if you remove the UK) baffles me a bit.  France, Germany, Italy, Spain (the largest markets) all have their own lobbies.  Are they used in Eastern Europe?  Greece?  Can you be more specific, Bruce?

I suspect the people in Europe who get them get them from nearby countries that don't have their own lobby cards. More than that I can't say. I never ask my consignors where they get their items from.

Ah, yeah, I kinda wanted that set for my Eastwood collection.  I own 27 LC sets on Eastwood, missing 10 or so.  Next time, I guess.

T

Sorry - I didn't notice it was you until the clock had almost run down and I had placed my last bid. I was done, and I was sure you would bid before it was over - I know by now that your pockets are a lot deeper than mine when it comes to posters. Anyway, best of luck getting another one - I'm sure one will turn up.

Dont apologize.  As a rule, I never look at who I'm bidding against, because I know too many people and I don't want to pass on something I want because someone I know wants it too.  Sometimes I agree before the sale, but never during.  And yes, it will show up again.  What can make it a long wait for me is that I always want complete sets and absolutely no pin holes.

I know you don't need an answer, but 99% of these sets are sent to us from South America, Europe, and Australia, and zero of them come from North America and England, so it gives you a sense where they are still being used. I suspect certain countries very much like lobby cards, and THAT is why they are still being made.

Well well well!

I had absolutely no idea.

My confidence in the Knowledge on these boards thus reinforced, no further questions will be rhetorical.  Each and every one will demand a full and complete answer.

Cheers Bruce.

In my experience, lobbies for the US market stopped being produced in the early 90s.  Probably after half sheets and inserts were discontinued and about the same time they went to 27x40 for 1sheets.

Thanks, T. My favorite Kim Novak/Jack Lemmon movie is Bell, Book, and Candle, one I'll most likely never get the cards for, so this will have to do. But there is the bonus of Kim in the tub.  ;D She does strip in Pal Joey, a set I will have eventually. Need a mint one though - like you, I hate pin holes.

Much appreciated, Damo and Shawn. Yes, there does seem to be more LC activity lately, which is good and bad. Good because I'm seeing lots of cards that inspire me, and very bad on the pocketbook. My collection's still pretty feeble compared to most, but I'm having fun finding new sets that go with my favorite films. The Kubrick stuff is harder to find than I anticipated, and much more expensive, but I'm making some headway. A mint '68 release of 2001 is still elusive. Ahhh - but tloce has a complete Lolita set for $3,000. Dream on...

Not one of my favorite films exactly, but it was cheap at auction and I couldn't resist. As a vintage camera collector, the period look of the photos appealed to me.

Pretty Baby, a Louis Malle film with a young Brooke Shields, Susan Sarandon, and Kieth Carradine. 11" x 14" 8-card set.

Yeah, I've read the threads about who not to buy from, but paying that kind of money for any set is out of the question regardless. I did buy an Aliens set from tloce when I first started - I guess it's real. The fine printing looks sharp and the paper feels like other cards, but the photos are really grainy. That may just be the quality of the set. I don't know any other way to tell if they're legit. The price of learning the ropes.

Two years later, Brooke Shields did Blue Lagoon, the first time I ever looked at a girl.  I had the French poster in my bedroom, even though I didn't care about posters.  It's the first poster I remember owning.  I probably drew on it to cover Christopher Atkins' face (I can't believe I even remember his name.)  Then a year later, Endless Love, and I truly fell in love...  OMG, the CU of her face when she's carrying the books... kill me now.

I'd be very suspicious of those Aliens cards.  They are on the list of known minty whites, and troche is a major distributer of this material.

Thanks for the links guys. I've seen most of them, but unfortunately too late for the Aliens set. I've found a guide for the Alien (1) set here:

http://www.ebay.com/gds/Guide-to-Real-vs-Fake-Alien-1979-Lobby-Cards-/10000000012406685/g.html

but no such info on the cropping of the Aliens set. I'll post them when I get time, but I'm not sure if anyone can tell by the jpegs. Comparing the borders and bottom title section of the Aliens set to my known good Alien set, they are much, much whiter and the images are dull, grainy and washed out. Although the NSS licensing information at the bottom right is very sharp under a magnifier, the letters are much finer and lack the black depth of the Alien cards. It looks like the guy still has an unlimited supply of these sets up for sale, as well as the singles. I'm not getting a good feeling about this.

Brooke was a bit young for me, but I remember how beautiful and innocent she was in Blue lagoon. My teen years in the 60s were spent watching slightly older women than I - Debra Paget in those old gladiator movies late at night, and then Raquel Welch as a half-naked cave-woman, and the best devil a guy could ask for in Bedazzled. I was one of the few who didn't have a poster of Farrah on my wall. To me, she just wasn't quite "exotic" enough, and with little exposure to foreign films back then, Bardot was off my radar. But - I just watched le femme Nikita for the first time this weekend - and, well move over Nicole, I think I'm in love.

If you like Anne Parillaud, here she is in 1983.

She was discovered by Alain Delon and ended up dating Luc Besson for years.  For some reasons beyond my comprehension, her 1983 naked body ended up on the Czech poster of 1990 Almodóvar's ˇÁtame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) even though she has nothing to do with the movie.  But it is her alright.  The picture is from a 1983 article in the French magazine Lui.  I don't want to clutter your thread, so you can see a bigger picture of the poster on my site.

And regarding Loce, I have no idea.  How does this guy still sell on Ebay is beyond me.  Is there really no way to kick the crooks out?  There must be something we can do as a community.

The way the MPAA has been going after bootleg movies and torrent downloads, I'm surprised that Fox isn't upset about bootleg posters and LCs. I suppose the revenue loss isn't worth the trouble, and the DMCA probably doesn't cover paper materials. Probably isn't worth a lawsuit either, unless it's class action.

The fact that he and others have been churning out and selling this fake material for so many years shows that the studios likely dont care and it isnt worth their time or effort to really go after these guys.

The studios don't care, and why should they?  Our hobby means nothing to them,  But Ebay should.  They should care that some of them members are rotten.  There should be a way to name crooks.  If one person does it, I get it, who cares, but if 50 of us who have been robbed by the likes of Egbert and Loce do it, that should be enough to get these assholes kicked out.

This is card 1 of the Aliens suspect "minty white" set taken against my known good Alien set card 1. A direct comparison to a known good Aliens card 1 would be a true test, but I don't have one. The text is sharp, but less dense on the "minty white". Comments?

Both look good to me, Dr Bill (based just on your pics, as I'm not a LC guy, really) but there is also a 7 year time frame between the 2 sets, so there might be slight overall differences in paper appearance, etc.

What's more troubling is that my set is cropped slightly more on the left than T's image on his site, which as I've read has been a common telltale sign of a fake. I guess it's soured me a bit on adding to my collection as quickly. Not sure I can tell any fake from the real thing anymore. That, and the sudden death of a close family member has put me in a holding pattern lately. Picked up a few sets in the emovieposter auction the other night though, so I'm getting back on the horse, slowly.

Thanks, Jeff. After the grieving, it's the battle over the estate. Anyway, I found this sweet little 18-year-old to comfort me - her name's Glenlivet. And she's telling me to buy more lobbies...

Looks like you're taking her advice, Dr Bill. cheers

Nice looking LC sets you got there.

Thanks, guys. Too much travel lately, but I came back to a pile of paper. The mention of the 24x36 video in another thread is responsible for my first three posters (on the way). Damn it, I knew this day would come. Absolutely nowhere to hang them.

Anyway, I continue my Tornatore tribute with some stills from Star Maker, with the tantalizing Tiziana Lodato.

Saturn 3 wasn't a great film, but the villainous robot was memorable for its interesting look and overall creepiness. Farrah was ravishing as usual, but Douglas' bare wrinkled butt wasn't a highlight, although it did fit with the underlying theme of an older man's insecurities when involved with a much younger beauty like Fawcett. A cult film now, I guess. But watching Fawcett's smile light up the screen still touches me.

Yeah, I was never a huge fan of hers.  Too American, if that means anything.  Too baywatch.  Not enough character for my money.  It's those little flaws, you know.  I remember the robot, though.  I wonder what that says about me ;)

I missed her target teen-male audience by almost a generation, but who can forget that iconic poster or her with all that hair and the killer smile? I always felt a bit sorry for her, swept up in the fame of those Bay Watch good looks and body, always reaching to prove her acting abilities though never taken very seriously as hard a she tried. Then the tragic death. But I know what you mean by character. My real penchant was always for the slightly more exotic, probably from those early days of watching Debra Paget. I never had access to many French films (Bardot) back then, but about the same time was infatuated with Sophia Loren, Virna Lisi, Monica Vitti...I seem to have this thing for Italian women and directors.

The one performance that always stood out for me was the TV movie she made, called "The Burning Bed." Good story, with substance, and she showed what she had the potential to do, acting-wise.

Then there was Extremities, an electrifying performance in an intense film that also showed her chops. But I think her personal life became a mess, and it was always hard not to be type-cast as a Charlie's Angel. Drug problems (I remember her wacked-out night on Letterman), and finally cancer. A flame that burns twice as bright...

"Extremities" was also excellent, DB, I totally agree with you here, too. And she wasnt some blonde "beach babe" in that one either.... FAR from it.

Your pics are always so evenly lit, crisp and sharp clap clap

Thanks - I copy the cards two ways.

(1) If they fit on my Epson XP-960 scanner (8 1/2 x 11), I scan them to 1200 dpi high resolution .tifs, then run them through Lightroom to get the full black/white dynamic range before exporting to sRGB jpgs.

(2) Larger cards/posters are photographed with a Canon 5D MK II full frame digital camera using either a 100mm f/2.8L or 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, depending on the size of the card or poster. The camera is mounted on a tripod for steadiness, and a single Canon 600 EX-RT flash with diffuser is bounced off the ceiling and surrounding whiteboards to attempt even lighting. I really need a second flash to do this right. Some lighting unevenness can be corrected in Lightroom (but it's a pain in the ass). The resulting in-camera raw files are imported into Lightroom along with a shot of my Passport Color Checker. This handy little tool is used to correct color balance and exposure due to white balance shifts from surrounding light reflections and camera sensor shifts (and can be seen in my post of the fake Aliens LC from tloce). The files are then exported from Lightroom again as sRGB jpgs.

Of course, the scanned cards are kept flat by the scanner lid. I photograph the rest as they lie on the floor with the camera suspended over them on a short boom. After lots of time adjusting the camera so it's level (leveling bubble on the tripod head helps), I use an f/8 or smaller aperture to get the broadest depth of field possible so the edges stay in focus if there's any slight curling. A high output flash is a big help, allowing a small apertures to get the proper exposure.

The LCs are easy - now that I've started doing posters, I really need a second flash for the best lighting.

Thanks for that breakdown and explanation, DrBill.

Perhaps getting stand alone key and fill lights might be another option, versus a 2nd flash?

Yep - that's a much cheaper option, but the output can't match a good flash, and I could use a second unit for my other photography. I'd planned to get a second flash some time ago, but LCs and posters have been draining my budget.

Looks like it's working for you just fine, there, DrBill. And the pics prove it.

Really great portraits of these folks.

Sounds like an excellent photo setup, and the scanning of LCs sounds like quite the ticket.  Thanks for the info.

Thanks, Neo. I especially like the last Alien card with Weaver and Ryder. Too bad there aren't any with the xenomorphs.

Scanning the cards is much, much faster and easier than photographing them, and I think the quality may be a bit better. My best option may be to find a scanner that does 11x14 cards. I don't buy many posters, so photographing them isn't a big deal.

Thanks, Ted. Can't wait for the new Blade Runner. Also Ex Machina writer Alex Garland's adaptation of Annihilation in February, based on Jeff VanderMeer's strange and creepy book. Previews promise a cross between Tarkovsky and Kubrick.
