Looks like the last unbacked one Bruce sold was four years ago for just over $7,000, so today's result doesn't seem too out of line.
You know what they say, When T can't afford to collect anymore we're all in trouble.

As far as I can tell, only one sold in good folded condition (what I'm after, I don't buy lesser condition posters) at Emovie (none at HA).  I bid on it at the time and missed.  I resigned myself to buy a linenbacked one, but it just went for almost the same price than the folded one, which is completely wrong to me.  I had $5k in mind and bid that.  After that, we were in folded territory prices (I'll always bid more on a folded copy) and I passed.

And yes, I cannot win anything these days.  I just can't go that high.

And for a totally opposite view, our former babe-bangin' buddy Mel posted this just a bit ago.

Hahaha that guy!!!!  I didn't know he was still around.

NOT that guy. A dealer using that name. No relation at all.
We (eMoviePoster.com) hold 2,500 to 4,000 auctions every four weeks.
We have auctioned more movie paper for more money (in real sales) than any auction in the world.
We have the longest continuously running auctions of any auction, with over 1,914,280 to date from over 3,192 consignors.

Some good results at Propstore today I think.  I don't buy linen, I don't buy printer's proof, and I don't buy less than "very good" condition items, so for me, it was a pass on everything.  But it's always fun to see the stuff you own go for 2x or 3x what you paid for, and there was a lot of that.

I got the star wars soundtrack proof poster at today's propstore auction. And this appears to actually be a signed off one so the people who don't like to call untrimmed posters with color bars proofs can still call this one a proof because it actually is one. Interestingly the date is late June 1977.

Cool pick up, I had never heard of this soundtrack poster before.  I didn't realize it was so rare until I read your post since it looks just like the OS style A.  Congrats.

I agree with Thierry that there were too many things on linen for my taste at Propstore today (as usual), but I did win a folded copy of The Black Cat (1941), a minor Universal horror title that is very scarce (especially in unbacked state).

I did see that Black Cat poster and thought it was pretty cool looking.  Have you seen the movie?

Honestly, the best thing about so many linen is that it allows me to go through the catalog pretty quicklyv thumbsup.gif

T

I've seen 1941's The Black Cat (not to be confused with the much more famous 1934 Universal movie of the same title which also starred Lugosi as well as Karloff), it can actually be found on an old Uni horror DVD collection I own that includes other minor titles like Captive Wild Woman and Man Made Monster.  It's definitely a lesser entry in the Universal horror canon, but an entertaining one nonetheless, particularly for a completist like me.  It's also notable for having an early appearance of Alan Ladd, who would become a major Hollywood star after starring in a few classic film noirs (This Gun for Hire, The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia) just a year later.

The normal production poster of this is harder to find than a normal style -A but isn't super rare compared to other posters.  It's in the Kilian checklist poster for instance.  However, this is the first proof poster of this version publicly sold and on top of that looks like it was actually signed off on which makes it extra special.

I'm bidding on a few things, Starling. I won one so far.  I wish there were more pictures on some items and more explanation on what might be specifically missing in a pressbook.  Good luck, if you are bidding!  Okie

I got a couple, but nothing extravagant.

A lot of things sold for way above what I could afford, but it seems to be the norm these days.  I'm not complaining, not anymore, but I'm certainly glad I started collecting 20 years ago.

In this regard, I believe this to be the exact same poster that I was offered last year for $4k.  I did not buy it then because of my aversion to linen, but it's funny to see it sell for $20k today.  I don't regret not buying it because I would have not sold it anyway, so I would have never known, but it's a good turn of event for the seller.

T, I was very surprised by that N by NW poster price as well.  I also thought there were several cool posters that seemed like a bargain.  I'm also quite excited to say I bought the Bride of Frankenstein pressbook.  I'll post it once I receive it.  It looks to be in nice condition.  Though, I wish I would have bought it years ago!  Okie

That's funny, T!  I'm still very surprised that I had the high bid. I've liked that image for a long time and The Bride's flowing hair is so cool.  Once again, Antoine's inspiration from last year helped me make the leap... Okie

I need to watch the live auctions more often - it's fun, and of course it's good to see the big ballers here winning.  Congrats, T and Okie.

Congrats on a fantastic purchase Okie!  You won't regret it, it's truly among the best pressbooks ever produced, for arguably the greatest Universal horror film ever made.  Personally, I think the cover image is the best poster for the movie.

Whoa, Okie.... That was YOU??? I was watching that out of curiousity. I just now checked the results and ZOWIE! It's gorgeous, but wowzer--soooooo much money! That's like 10x as much as I've ever spent on a poster (which may explain why I have so many holes in my collection...) CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Congrats on a fantastic purchase Okie!
Some people say it's the poor man's insert, but having compared them both in-hand, I can safely say I think the image on the pressbook is much better both in the appearance of Karloff and Hobson, and in the overall "pop" of the coloring. You definitely won't be disappointed on this one.

Thank you Neo, Antoine, Monster, and Crow!  I'm really looking forward to seeing the pressbook in person.  I think the last time I saw one of these pressbooks in person was around 1979/80 at a convention in Oklahoma. I just love how the Bride's hair flows. The condition on this pressbook sure has me excited to see it, too. It's going to be so much fun seeing it framed!  I'll be hosting a Halloween movie night at a local venue here in October and I'm going to put this pressbook on display for the show.

I'm sure glad we have APF to celebrate collecting together!  Okie

Make sure you share a photo when you get it framed up! Are you thinking of framing it so you can see the front and back of the cover (like the Antiques Roadshow pressbook)?

Starling: I do like that visible back framing example from Antiques Roadshow. I'll also probably keep the ad mats out of the frame to be able to look at them. Have you by chance framed a pressbook before?

Antoine: Have you framed your Bride of Frankenstein pressbook?  If so, how did you decide to frame it?

For those of us in the U.S., have a safe Memorial Day Holiday and remembrance, Okie

I haven't got around to frame my BoF pressbook yet, somehow I keep getting sidetracked with other projects.  I'll make sure to post a pic whenever I finally do it.
