I was perusing a number of the various threads, newer and older and saw a good handful, including early posts/comments from both Holiday & T, suggesting having a separate Lobby Card section would be good to have.

So here it is.. and away we go!  :D

If this sub-category sits and languishes here on its own, the main LC thread can always be put back in with the Movie Posters, and this section removed.

This and because I would not take you, in general, for an appreciator of a good noir moving picture

One of the very few lobby cards I've purchased, here is the title lobby card for Blonde Ice (1948), great imagery:

I'm not much for movie memorabilia that isn't hand painted, but I'm a huge fan of KWAIDAN and couldn't pass these up.

Mike.

What do you mean here, exactly? hand painted ?

In what context-- what kinds of items?

I mean I generally like original hand painted art used instead of photos for posters and lobby cards.  I don't care if they're worth anything (though it's nice when they are ;) ), I just like a painted image.  I also dig intense and varied color and the Mexican lobbies and Thai movie posters I collect certainly deliver it.

Gotcha.. i also prefer OS or other poster imagery that is artwork, rather than cut 'n pasted photos assembled on a poster. There's just something about that kind of imagery that stands out, especially if it is spot on and the actors or characters are recognizable, and are good representations of the real thing.

**The whole LC section can be removed and the main thread returned to the poster section, if this one is seemingly dead in the water. It was created because there were a number of people that had posted that it would be nice to have a LC area, separate from posters.

I'm happy to remove it, and put the sub-threads back into "Posters" as I first mentioned, when this area was created, if this is pretty much an unused section.

Latest score.  Dead cards but colorful and it is a Tod Browning/Lionel Barrymore epic  ;D.

I need to watch this again.

I don't think I have seen it since I was a kid. And me always enjoys watching some Browning... Barrymore, too, for that matter!  ;)

Just a general question to the group..

If a set of Lobby Cards has been laminated... and is from a well known or iconic film, what kind of value (collectible or otherwise) do they have, if any, once this process has been done to them?

The reason I ask, is I found someone offering a set from JAWS, that had been "wrapped in plastic" this way, and the seller is asking $150.00.

Is that price reasonable? High? Low?

I know there has been wide discussion on laminating posters... and that it hurts their value terribly. But didnt know if it was the same for LC.

Are you sure they were laminated?  There was a group a couple of years ago that was grading and then sealing lobbies in plastic, they same way they do comics and sports cards.  That is reversible as they only seal the plastic around the card, and not the card itself.

Hi jay.. no, the set this guy has is laminated. I just emailed him, tho, to verify, in case he is using the wrong term and meant 'slabbed.'

But if they are truly laminated... what say you then?

Indeed, Paul. This seller emailed me, trying to say that lamination and it not being looked up as a proper way to conserve items (and not devaluing them) is all nothing but rumor and hearsay.

Here is the email that i received when i explained that the topic has been discussed by collectors and dealers alike:

Please show some logic of why the rumor was started.
How does it (laminating) affect the colors?
How does it affect intrinsic value?
Does it affect its way to be displayed?
Is it not true that an artifact that's been encapsulated in a medium is to stop acid decomposition, fading, spoilage and yellowing?

Who made up these rules and when? Is a poster forum of so-called collectors the authority on posters? (in the law that's called hearsay).

What evidence could be used in court to prove value consensus alone? Or the professional opinion of a seller of many years?
What does preservation of documents vs collectibility have to do with poster collecting and storage?

As can be seen, he got a little defensive, sounding as tho lamination is equivalent to linen backing, slabbing or other preservation methods, and doent not affect an item's value, in the least.  :-\
