It has never been a big collecting habit of mine, but for some reasons (probably getting Spielberg related ones), I've built a little collection over time.

That is a great card. Worth every penny...
Gorgeous colors and in great condition, congrats!
effing dammit. i do not forget to bid very often. when i do, it is very bad. things break, and i owe more money than I would normally owe. things are broken now because my temper
(and mostly my grip) still hang on like a case of gonorrhea. If it is you, please remove your organ from my general vicinity.
Jeezum crow, Schan...what happened?
Was one of the aforementioned lobbies on your watch list?
you mean Amarillo Slim on the California Split card? I was playing poker one night at a small room in Oklahoma City and he walked in and started playing 2-5. It was pretty cool.
what a pair of knocker Sophia has
Dennis, where do you live and...ummm...how tight's the security? wynk
By his own admissions, Ted has a very long list of houses to ummmmm...visit.
Let's hope he collects Air Miles...
I would dearly love to have something from "Robot Monster." Super nice batch!

What spectacular lobbies, Louie clap The W&W ON AGAIN OFF AGAIN TC, Lloyd Hamilton and Harry Langdon cards are my favorites. You have some pieces you don't see very often in your collection. Well done thumbup
In the year I've been in this hobby, I haven't seen one Lloyd Hamilton lobby up for auction. I'm envious ;D
No doubt Louie is the King of Vintage Lobby Cards...wow...keep 'em coming man...
Would LOVE to find one of these, especially since the scene depicted wasnt shown this way in the film. In the film, only the mummy's hand, shot in close up, is seen reaching for the scroll.

Because they purchased a title card? (http://boards.collectors-society.com/images/graemlins/default/confused-smiley-013.gif)
Jeff, I sold one of those last year.
I was fortunate enough to have both that and the sarcophagus card at nearly the same time.
Now the Jungle, Island, Savages, Adventure, etc folder.

That one's my favorite also Matias, I have the U.S. lobby card framed in my office (along with a few other courtroom scenes).
Managed to locate these last week. Not a full set, but still 5 of them. They are very obscure as they are from the first U.K. release in 42, and have the "H" cert on them....

I consider any Lewton with Karloff in, a Karloff... ;)
AWESOME pickups Paul (particularly the Mummy's Ghost FOH)!
So are the "Isle of the Dead" cards considered Karloffs or Lewtons? ;)

Tannis leaves are worse than crack to a mummy, eh Chris?
Great photos, Paul!
Because of the outstanding performance Karloff gives, it's most definitely a Karloff. And one of his best films ever.
In my book, Karloff trumps ALL co-stars and ALL directors. wynk
I think Lugosi steals Son of Frankenstein from William Henry Pratt (Franky really doesn't do much in that film). And of course Bela gets the better of Boris in both the Raven and more menacingly in the Black Cat (skinned alive anyone?).
So maybe Karloff is 1 and Lugosi is 1A...

These are my best cards, although I have a lot more. The blue snipe is the Australian rating advice. All are for sale.
It can be a lot of fun hunting down the individual cards to make up a full set. Pretty affordable compared to posters as well, and they're so easy to store and display. Gotta love that compared to one sheets!
Lobbies are good stuff!
do you only have sets?
ok, do you have any halves? :P
I posted a LOT. I love them. if I wasnt faithful to Daybills, they would be my favourite.
If Ves is about I hope she will post a pic of the Mr Cinderella set. So nostalgic ...

I wonder if the wheel is the same one in those last two cards. Looks identical.
it's a common wheel Jay. I wouldn't be surprised to see one with the same spindle or same surface in use down at the older casinos here in town.
Also, the wheel in different films can be seen on different table setups and while a wheel is not "married" to a particular table (they can all be removed for examination, recalibration etc) I would suspect if we see the same type wheel on the same table in some films, that they would be the very same unit. I also wouldn't be surprised if various prop rental companies had their own, which would be why they come on different tables.
Sorta figured, but decided to ask anyway. I know nothing about gambling, and am the sort of fellow that provides the cash the PROs like to brag about winning.

This fact pleasantly surprises me...
Why?
probably because none of us know you collect lobby cards
I'm not much for movie memorabilia that isn't hand painted, but I'm a huge fan of KWAIDAN and couldn't pass these up.
Just a general question to the group..
If a set of Lobby Cards has been laminated... and is from a well known or iconic film, what kind of value (collectible or otherwise) do they have, if any, once this process has been done to them?
The reason I ask, is I found someone offering a set from JAWS, that had been "wrapped in plastic" this way, and the seller is asking $150.00.
Is that price reasonable? High? Low?
I know there has been wide discussion on laminating posters... and that it hurts their value terribly. But didnt know if it was the same for LC.
Are you sure they were laminated? There was a group a couple of years ago that was grading and then sealing lobbies in plastic, they same way they do comics and sports cards. That is reversible as they only seal the plastic around the card, and not the card itself.
Jeff, by now you should know that Tom is nuts.. A good nuts, but still nuts.
I wish he would paginate though...... wynk
If they're laminated in such a way that only the edges are sealed and they could be cut open - no real issue.
However, that is highly unlikely to be the case. This is just an example of a seller being defensive in an attempt to get top value for an item.
But it is a good question about lamination. One I have asked before. If the poster/lobby inside is basically permanently preserved on a visual level what does that say about the process?
That said, I would never actively seek out laminated paper but I can see how a persuasive argument could be built to illustrate lamination as being not such a bad thing...
I forgot to mention...if Rich hadn't spilled the beans on it being Tom ....seriously ...for those that don't know his reinvention of the English language....one look at that email and you know it's Tom...apparently he wants to eat your "guru"
Isn't there a thread called "Ebay idiots"? Because this seller for sure belongs there.
T
are they really that rare (or valuable)? I can't see why.
Why would they be rare when other stuff from the same era, presumably with smaller releases can be reasonably (or more) common?, or is it because its desirable and people don't sell?
Are you referring to early 70s material in general being plentiful? Or early 70s Hong Kong material being plentiful? IMO any early 70s HK material is rare. In fact, I would extend that to almost all HK material -- even more modern stuff like Wong Kar Wai and pre-Hollywood John Woo. It exists, it's just rare. So I'm sure there are 1st release HK BL posters floating around, but do to a combination of overall scarcity and the few that exist being locked up in collections they just don't seem to turn up for sale. I've actually found more HK posters being sold out of places like Australia, Thailand, Germany and Canada than out of Hong Kong proper.
So again, if you know any Aussie sellers with HK posters, please ping me :)
I thought there would be more!!
;D

Ass
I had no idea you had so many lobbies. Completist syndrome?
I'd take ass over imbecile any time of the day.
60% of them are 80s and 90s crap though. But always complete sets. I don't collect incomplete ones. LCs are a side collection. I don't have the will, time or patience to go after missing parts.
T
I prefer complete sets, but for me it depends on the title. Some titles, a couple of cards may be my only hope of collecting. For example, I have several Singin' in the Rain cards. Jumbo, delux, first release and a complete 62 RR. I'd love to have a complete 53 LCS, but I've never run across one, and if I did, I expect it would be beyond my budget since the TC seems to go for $1200-2000 these days.
The problem is that I'm a completist, and if I bought a couple cards here or there, I'd go insane trying to get the rest. I'd always be looking, and that's not something I need in my life right now. For example, I own a few Hitchcock LCs that I bought a long time ago, and since I like my stuff in mint or close to mint condition, I haven't been able to buy the rest. It's always with tears, fading or missing corners, which I absolutely hate. So I said fuck it, I'll buy a set when I see one and be done with it.
T
It's good that he doesn't collect Universal Horror (or early Japanese lobbies, or Marx Bros. or something). Can you imagine trying to buy those a set at a time?
LOL
That's why the majority is newer junk.
I understand, but there are several types of completist. I want material from the classic musicals of the 40s and 50s. Rich wants Chandler and gambling stuff. Ideally, you get complete sets, but to me it is more important to have something from each title than to have everything from 1 title. YMMV (and does)
What's the difference between the MGM sets and the ones you listed at the top? 80s Re-releases?

I have a number of Gene Tierney lobby cards. I have the title card for Laura and the full sets of Belle Starr/Dragonwyck with their original envelopes. More of a poster man myself though.
Yes but just a few ( in fact all my Gene lobby cards are goodies to me) nowhere near the goodies that have been shown in this thread though. Some of the cards on display in here are mesmerising.
Can we see some, timeless? prayer.gif
Jeff, I'll take a few pics this weekend and put them up.
Marc.
Just purchased a few at the Morris Everett auction. Thought they were a bit underpriced so I dove in. All lobbies.

I was looking at a set of LC being offered on the bay (from 1980) and noted that the size was described as 8 x 10 inches. I saw another of this same set that was the usual 11x14, so I wrote the seller and asked.
He wrote back, saying that in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, the NSS produced both sized cards, giving theaters an option.
Is his comment accurate? I thought I had read that LC (in recent decades) were 11x14.
Just a nice card I came accross which is said to be hand-tinted.
Not mine, yet.

Is his comment accurate? I thought I had read that LC (in recent decades) were 11x14.
It is very pretty, and it really tells the story of the film. You should get it Vick!I wish... I remember posting this confident I wasn't outing myself, as there is no way I can spend $266 USD.
Well, in the US, I thought that LCs were always 11x14. And the sometimes incorrectly named Photo Sets were 10x8. Some sellers call everything LCs, irrespective of size.
The Photo Sets are Front of House sets in the UK.
I was meaning, too, sets or cards Ive seen listed for sale from films from the 1920s or 30s, where the described size was 8x10.
Back then, weren't all (original) LC produced in the larger format only?
If so, then those 8x10 cards being listed and sold would probably be repros.
Always called them and seen them called mini lobby cards.
They aren't 8x10 stills, though they are 8x10.
But they are just smaller lobby cards.
Surely?
Ok. But in the UK, definitely FoH Sets.
....Even IF the Front of House was just another name for the Lobby.
Thank goodness there wasn't a third size in evidence as they'd probably be called Ticket Purchase and Concession Stand sets.
Anyone know how much packaging EMP uses for a set of 8 LCs...do they each have a sheet of kraft paper in between, do they come in an oversized super strong cardboard box or an envelope? Basically, is it worthwhile for me given the brutal shipping rates for a set of 8 worthless cards?
An EMP lobby set will be packaged as follows.
the cards are packed in a single plastic envelope. They are not separated.
The envelope is sealed with masking tape and then the long edge is folded over and taped so the cards cannot move within the envelope.
The envelope is taped to a very stiff and heavy piece of oversized backing board with reinforced packing tape.
The backing board is placed between two corrugated pieces of cardboard the same size.
The two pieces are taped together on all four sides with reinforced packing tape
This is then placed inside a heavy mailing flat.
The flat is sealed with reinforced brown tape on all edges.
It generally takes me about 5 minutes to extract the card(s). I couldn't bend the flat over my knee. In 25 years of buying from Bruce, I have had 2 instances of tubes being damaged. I have never had one of his flat packages damaged. Bruce is the gold standard.
All true except for the sleeve. They used to send a set of cards in its own separate 11x14in (or 8x10in) protective sleeve but stopped doing so a year ago. I usually buy 10 to 20 sets every time Emovie has an auction up, and they are now sent in a stack of 80 to 160 cards. No more set by set lobby card sleeves. Bruce is cheap.

Actually, it is not "cheapness" that forced this change. It was the obsessive/compulsive collectors who wept rivers over the massive waste of all those extra bags. I got tired of reading those complaints (and the bags are not archival anyway, so they should be discarded upon receipt), so I ditched the "one bag per set" rule, and went to "one bag per order", and we have had no more complaints (either over "waste" or damage).
It is interesting to note that the ONLY people who have anything bad to say about my business (either buying or consigning) are those who either never deal with us or those who virtually never deal with us. I listen to all suggestions and complaints from regular customers or consignors. I do not listen at all to complaints from non-customers/non-consignors.
Thanks for responding. Looks like in my over zealousness I'm now the high bidder on a set, so looks like I'll know soon enough how much shipping is gonna hurt. Of course getting damaged cards would hurt more that's for sure.

We are very agreeable, and go out of our way to make customers happy.
We DO "make it look easy" to run 3,000 unique auctions a week, but it is anything but!
You certainly do. And am sure it's not.
Re Rich's new packaging... Getting better, but still room for improvement... B+
PS, hope you don't forget to leave one out and need to open it up again
maybe I should have put the all folded up package into one more bag and sealed that before I put it into the box(es)
you need a Do Not Bend sticker on the package
Yes it is. Why not ask us to put each card in a separate bag? Or each set in a mylar sleeve?
You did it for years, Bruce. Out of my 500+ lobby card sets, I'd say 300 came from you and 250 were sent in their own plastic sleeves. I'm not asking you for the moon, just for something you used to do and after you said that you'd go out of your way to make customers happy, which is not entirely true.

we've been trying to figure out even better ways to ship lobby cards and I thought I would use this order to Australia for my pilot test and see what materials are best used to get a lobby card there safely
A set of 11x14 LC for The Stunt Man (1980):

Thanks jay.. it is a pretty cool set. And the only full set of LC that I own.
When did it become more common practice in more modern sets, where there was no longer an "official," title card, like was done in earlier years?
Not having ever owned a full set, I was surprise that card #1 looks the same (in style) as card #8.
The title card appears to have disappeared in the early to mid 1960s. It also appears to have been somewhat gradual as I have some mixture in the early part of the decade. But there do seem to be exceptions. I did a search on movie and sorted by release date. The search shows stuff from late 90's and 2000s, such as Sixth Sense, Phantom Menace, Starship Troopers, Disney's Hunchback, and so on. Looks like a couple of titles every year until US cards became very uncommon.
Thanks again.
That's too bad that it was decided to phase out actual title cards. Those really seemed to give a sense of the word, "set" and I've always enjoyed the LC images from the 1920s, '30s, '40s etc where the title was splashed boldly on the TC, along with other production and actor credits as well as often having really nice (and different) artwork.
I will now more closely look at TC and HS art for the comparisons.
Thanks again, jay.

Boringly referencing only that which I know, Quantum of Solace (2008) had a title card. It's predecessor, Casino Royale, had two title cards.
Simon, does this mean that CR had 2 sets of cards offered? Or were the 2 different title cards placed in each set?
Occasionally I find cards while building sets that have the same number, but the image is different. Both will have the same NSS number. Most common on sets from the 70s. I always assumed it was domestic vs international release, but am never sure.

Lobby cards time!

Looks like a really solid and protective way to store LC. Those containers look to be the perfect size, too.
Simon - Warner Bros. made linen lobby card sets, inserts and 22x28's for a couple of years. I guess the idea behind using this kind of stock was because the posters had a pebbled finish and looked much nicer and more special than the lobby cards and posters printed on normal flat stock. And as Starling mentioned, they brown badly with age, turning what was probably off white paper stock sepia brown. Folded linen inserts and 22x28's can really take a beating and will sustain a lot of damage. The fold lines on linen posters are the worst; the finish can chip off and show the under layer of paper. The lobby cards can look nice, but have to be handled carefully because they can chip, scuff, tear and start to look bad without much effort.
Thought I'd post a fun little 'naughty' one that is now 100 years old:

Part of the fun is discovering history hiding on the card. When I received the card, I found this on the back:
