You're kidding, right?  I will assume you are, but just in case...  January and September are and have always been the studios' graveyards.  When I was at Disney and DreamWorks, we always knew we had a bomb if it got released in those months.

Whatever does not get traction as an academy award contender before December 31st is released in January.  February is a little better, but not by much.  Good for animated movies like Lego or the upcoming KFP3.  March is when things become slightly interesting.

Same with September.  Whatever doesn't fit in the blockbuster summer schedule is dumped in September.  October is the beginning of Oscar season.

T

Great insight here.  Makes sense... So are the really bad ones also held until after the oscars not to trip up a nominee?  I remember 'The Other Woman' being held until after 'Black Swan' for Portman although I think it was made way early in 2010...

Mistakes have been made in the past.  The most recent I can think of is Norbit, which came out in early February and killed Eddie Murphy's chances to win an Oscar for Dreamgirls.

The only time a good movie comes out in January is when it has a run in busy December (to qualify for the Academy Awards) and its national release is postponed to the quieter January.  That happens all the time.  American Sniper came out on December 25 in selected cities but was officially released January 16.  Same with Still Alice, released on the 16 of January after a week trial at the beginning of December.

What T said. End of year is Oscar fair and family blockbuster type releases. April - August is teener-young adult popcorn push. April is fairly new to the big budget releases, that used to be a crap dump month as well. Sept/Oct is dead zone and non-oscar overflow Jan/Feb are as well.

Well done, man!

Haha.   8)  Thanks, Ted.

You're kidding, right?  I will assume you are, but just in case...

Yeah, I vaguely remember you mentioning something like this around the time Guardians of the Galaxy was released, and you thought it would be lame, based on the release date.

As y'all mentioned, the trends of the statistics, tactics for awards, etc., for release dates are interesting, but personally, I generally reserve judgment.

Been looking for this daybill for quite a while (2 years+)...

Two years search?  Wow.  Was it a really limited release for that screening?

Congrats on the win, JE.  thumbup

Okay, I thought I was done for the year but they keep popping up.  Annoying.

For some reason I almost never seem to hit the monthly new arrivals section that often. I was on here earlier this month--but that is it. Seeing as how i plan to severely limit my time on APF in 2016 (just maybe one visit per month is the plan) and being that I have had an amazing poster purchasing month, even though i usually only post on my own collection thread, I have picked 5 more to share (and limiting it to only 5 was difficult). I hope you like them since I tend to have schlocky taste.

RHPS is truly sweet.  Good to know Tim Curry is up and about, I had heard he suffered a stroke.  Just watched an old DVD commentary with O'Brien and Quinn, would be great to hear Tim and Little Nell's reminisces.
