Holy Cow, Jeff stats the month off. With my affinity and past in Japan I fight all the time to not start to pick up pieces for these kinds of movies though I know I will one day. Congrats, nice score.

Thanks and same here, too, Mike. The Japanese designs can be amazing and beautiful. And i've always been drawn to Asian art and painting, anyhow.   :)

One of my faves, great film, great poster.  Well done, Jeff!

Finally semi-caught up with past acquisitions myself and got them on the website.

First is something I've been trying to add to the collection for a long time, Fred and Ginger in Follow the Fleet:

More Norma Talmadge goodness from The Forbidden City:

Last, but not least, another from doomed Marie Prevost, Divorce Made Easy:

I tend to like hand painted movie posters, but the Japanese ones fancy me because of how many times they use collage in their design.

Thanks, all.

Yeah Mike..im the same way, normally, too, usually being more drawn to created imagery rather than photographic. But I also love the Japanese calligraphy, and if it's done and made to look like brushwork, it can add such an artistic element to these kinds of posters, too, imo.

Nice pickups everyone! And we are barely a day into June! I especially like the Follow the Fleet too.

Here are a couple more Mexican posters by Jose Espert (had a bit of an Espert streak lately): El dolor de los hijos (1949) and Cuando lloran los valientes (1947)

And the next acquisition isn't a movie poster, but I can't resist sharing it here anyway.  The Mexican artist Arias Bernal designed some great movie posters in the '40s, and I've shared a few photos before including "Fantasia Ranchera" and "Romeo y Julieta".

He was also a noted caricaturist and political cartoonist, and produced propaganda posters during WWII.

Near the end of the war, he produced an album of lithographs with artwork for a full set of playing cards, with each card having unique caricature artwork relating to the war.

And the complete album arrived on my doorstep today!  I'll share just a few examples here. Perhaps I'll post more in a different thread. I guess there isn't a dedicated propaganda section but I'll find a place.

The Swedish poster is pure class, the Mexican posters are beautiful as always, and the playing cards are amazing.  I thought my Shaw Brothers playing cards were cool but those take the cake...I must seek them out!

I got lucky recently and found this beauty at a swap meet in Santa Monica, CA.

Nice to see so much interest in the playing card prints!

To answer a couple of the questions:
I am not sure if decks of actual playing cards were produced with this artwork, or if it was solely sold as an album of prints.  I haven't ever seen any real playing cards.

I have uploaded images of the full album to photobucket. Enjoy!
http://s779.photobucket.com/user/DekeThornton/slideshow/Bernal%20WWII%20Playing%20Cards

Most of the historical figures are probably pretty recognizable. Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt, Hirohito, Montgomery, Himmler, Goering, etc.  But the inside cover also has a handy legend with descriptions for all of the cards.  I am not sure the text is quite legible in the photos though. I blame the photobucket compression :/

Somewhat interestingly, the cover of the album is in Spanish but the descriptive text on the inside cover is in English.  I wonder if perhaps separate versions of the inside cover were printed for Spanish & English-speaking markets.

One more interesting point is that my particular copy has a gift inscription in pen on the inside cover: "To Wayne and Bill. A folio of historic fun. For your game room -- in Texas. From Francis and Red 6-14-1947"

Anyway, on to the good stuff. Here are a few more photos of my favorites.

Petain and the capitulation of France; Roosevelt ("America, Fuck Yeah" from Team America: World Police starts playing in my head involuntarily when I look at this print):

Death of Hindenburg; Hitler and Himmler begin book burning and executions:

Casablanca Conference; Hitler is thwarted by the Russian bear:

Ok I know it's not movie posters but those playing cards fascinated me so i did a little research.  500 decks were privately made in the early 2000's.  There is also a nice book that was published twice...once in 2002 and once in 2014 that has scans of all the cards and commentary on them.  Here is a link to the book on Amazon that you can get if you want.  It's also available used on some other sites as well.

http://www.amazon.com/Fuehrer-Face-Cards-Captions-Illustrated/dp/1502348519/ref=la_B00JAG9SWQ_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433354195&sr=1-3

You can peek inside the book and also go to the back cover to see encapsulated information that will put this thing to bed  ;D

So far the only quads I have seen are the ones that were used at the SW convention in the UK. There are a couple of sellers that have been printing a quad size which seem to come and go.

Interesting twist on yours, it does not say December and instead says "In Cinemas Soon". Wonder if it was changed for some reason or there is another printing for another purpose. Is yours a US one sheet? Is it double sided?

These are great.
What details can you provide for the textless piece?

The below text is from the auction house. Basically this was a test proof for the artwork before moving on to the next stage in the process, adding the title and text. This would technically be considered an art or artists proof depending on who you talk to. The one on the left is obviously a finished Hungarian Jedi poster.

"From Helenyi, Tibor's estate. 1984. Printers test proof for Tibor Helenyi's famous poster for Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, to check the final result of the graphics in a printed version."

Matt, I actually did the layout for the framing I wanted to use for them after I received confirmation on the win so was ready to go when they came, just needed to cut the mat to the right size and I was done. Can't wait to see yours when they arrive.

An HQ print of the original art?

It is a roughly 1:1 uncropped copy of the original artwork with some color modification. It is overall darker than the original art.

Very, very common for english language international Advance posters to state Coming Soon or In Cinemas Soon versus a date, in fact I would bet 90%+ now are worded that way. Quick tell on whether is is a domestic(US) vs. international poster you are looking at.

Mike, is the sky color on yours that much more orange (in addition to being overall more dark) than the original art?

Or is it more the pic image file and lighting?

What he said. Looks good T, did it just arrive?

No, it's Adams picture.  I was fighting him on the FedEx fees, so it's going to take longer.

Very nice wins, y'all.

I scored this Close Encounters Hungarian A2:

The shipping from Hungary wasn't cheap for the A2 that I won (about $50 via FedEx), so I can't imagine what the shipping would cost for an A0.  It arrived darn quick, though.  He sent it last Tuesday and I received it two days later, and in near mint condition.  They even included a nice certificate.  Although it's not perfect provenance, like for a painting, it's a neat memento.  8)

Yeah, they also charged me $50, which to me seems crazy money.  So I complained.  I don't care when things arrive.  This month, next month, it doesn't make a difference to me.  But Adam said that it could get lost, so I caved.

And Brandon, great poster indeed.  The best for Close Encounters.

only collectors will spend $5000 on something and then complain about the shipping costs......

it's like some of my poker friends.. they'll happily sit down with a couple thousand cash (or very much more) to play a game, but they won't spend $25 on a good dinner.

It's all about priorities, Rich, and I hate overspending on shipping.  I will simply not buy posters if I feel shipping is too high.

Collector: "How much is that poster?"
Gallery: "$5000.00"
Collector: "that's at least $1500.00 more than it ever sold anywhere. How did you come up with that price?"
Gallery: "take it or leave it..."
Collector: "okay.. I'll pay your price even if it is more than a thousand I ever wanted to pay for it.. How much is shipping?"
Gallery: "$24.00"
Collector: "WHAT?!? THAT'S DOUBLE WHAT IT SHOULD COST YOU TO PACK & SHIP IT.. YOU'RE RIPPING ME OFF FOR $12.00!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!"

Not 100% sure where to stick this one, could be unicorn, could be Star Wars or just most recent so this will do for now.

Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back style B studio version one sheet. Also called the purple or dark version because the background blue is a much darker tone than the normal NSS and studio version. This little change in coloring frankly takes one of my least favorite SW posters and makes it one of my top favorites. I was not looking for it, it just popped up and I got a little lucky that someone else did not grab it first. I have seen three copes total of this uncut or proof as some would call it and the two I have seen before may actually have been the same poster making it two. Either way a tough one to come by hence maybe the unicorn moniker works as well. Will look spectacular once it is framed up and on a wall.

My almost 2 year old loves sharks and elephants so started building a scary fish collection for him.  Never too early.  A few items below are for daddy too.

Jeff, basically there are two display cases back to back separated by a bookcase turned 90 degrees (a horse shoe shape with the bookcase on the left, a second bookcase when built will be on the other side making it a box shape. I'll make a top to go over the two bookcases creating yet another place to pile stuff higher and deeper. Once done this whole mess will be centered in the room, creating an island walk around.  Also on the build list is two display cases to replace the cheapy ones now in use. They will be made to allow a half sheet and one sheet as covers in the future if I want to go that route.  The back display case is maybe two feet from the wall of posters. Because the back one is not seen I've used it as storage for framing material, office supplies, general house ledgers and assorted supplies with necessary junk and clutter. One of my goals is to actually have a clean and usable office area but it seems to be an uphill battle, if you know what I mean and I think you do  ;).  Clear as mud, if I do say so myself.

I do all my own framing/matt cutting and have used a mail order company for the last thirty years or so for frames.  Way back in the day, they were a small, service oriented business and since the advent of the internet have become one of the best companies I've ever dealt with.  You can check out their website..

americanframe.com.

Even when I was a worker bee framing stuff at Michaels Farts and Crap, I use them instead of my employee "discount", which was always more expensive than americanframe.  Only drawback to using americanframe is the plexiglass/mat board for one sheets are too large to ship to me here in Germany, luckily I found a local source for the those items.  I pretty much use two inch mattes on one sheets but it really depends on how the poster was printed.  Over the years I've settled on standard sizes for all my paper with one sheets being 30.5 x 43, half sheets 24 x 30, inserts/triptych 18 x 40, single lobby cards 13 x16.  This way if I want to I can easily swap out matted posters and not worry about the frame fitting or not. But there is always stuff that refuse to be fitted into the standard shoe size, so they get the "custom treatment" and a dedicated frame of their own.

Wow, thanks Lynn for all of that great info! I will definitely check out that site. I tried Michaels once when they sent me a 60% + 15% off framing coupon. Took my 36x12 print for an estimate and they wanted $750+ for an aluminum frame with matte and plexi - and that was after the 75% off!!! Nuts to that. I did pick up a 24x36 and 18x24 frame from there and cut my own matte and backing; however, those are both glass. Anyways, again thanks and great looking room! thumbup
Title: Re: June 2015

Depending on where you live there is probably a biz that deals with plexiglass.  When I was in Seattle, it was Clear Cut Plastics.  They would custom cut sizes for me at a very reasonable price. Michaels carries it but, like their Masterpiece glass it is a bit expensive.  I have a small 32'' mat cutter (Logan 301 or some such model number) and cut large mats.  Just takes a bit of practice and the desire to collect a pile of mistakes  ;). If a butterfingers like me can do it, anyone can.  I can frame up a one sheet for 150 bucks or so and with the ever growing Pile-o-Paper™ that is a big consideration.

And I can't sing the praises for americanframe enough.  Only drawback right now is the shipping charges to Europe, most times it's free for orders over 125 $ for US destinations.

Absolutely but it is a shame their prices have steadily been creeping upwards.  I suppose that is true with any supplier/manufacturer though.  And because I am close the US border I have been able to take advantage of having the frame shipped to a warehouse in the US and then I drive across to pick them up.  Mucho cost savings even factoring in duty/taxes/fuel etc!

Another which is technically a Unicorn for me is off the list.

Most people are familiar with the famous "Yamakatsu" or "StarFall" poster that is so highly sought after and almost impossible to find. The vast majority though do not know that Yamakatsu is actually a trading card company and it is actually one of two posters used for the Yamakatsu Return of the Jedi trading card campaign in 1983. This second poster though not quite as hard to find as the StarFall version is still one that has taken me years to track down a copy in better than mediocre condition. It almost seems like every copy I come across has some form or major defects. Needless to say I am happy to have acquired this copy to finish off my OCD compulsion to finish sets.

If I am to understand correctly, this and the Starfall poster were used to promote Yamakatsu's ROTJ trading card series in Japan?
So, they were not commercially sold?

So, they were not commercially sold?

I have researched this one more than once and have heard two different versions. The first version which seems to be the one more commonly spread around today is that the poster was sold in theaters during the first release of Jedi in Japan. The second version which I had heard long before the theater sold version came from store owners that I contacted looking for copies who said that the posters were not sold in theaters but was instead sent to store owners that sold the Yamakatsu card series again when the movie came out the same way Topps and other card companies send them out today. I have also never heard of a Yamakatsu poster that was ever created specifically for mass public sale despite being around for at least 40 years when Jedi came out. This is a company that created a huge number of card sets around movies and even more for sports. I am not a historian of the company though and may be wrong. If I am I am sure one of the many knowledgeable people here will set me straight on that one.

Being that so few of these posters, both versions, have shown up over the years, the fact that other than the title the only information on the posters is the Lucasfilm copyright and a bold Yamakatsu and the fact that I had been hearing the card store sales stories for several years before ever hearing of the theater version I tend to believe the latter but I was not in Japan in 1983 so cannot say for sure. When we look at most posters that was mass produced even in smaller print runs they are relatively easily found today in comparison. These though are very hard to find which makes me think the print run was very small likely intended for distribution to the stores and not sold to the public. This though is not enough to say conclusively though that they were not sold in theaters.

CRIPPLED MASTERS is a fun exploitation film and this poster is an exciting find.  It's kinda how I felt when I found one for SHANGHAI JOE.  The kung fu genre Thai posters are some of the best.

Argentine OS for the Argentinean romantic comedy, Mi Mujer Esta Loca (1952), with the quirky, caricature artwork done by Abel Ianiro. That style of art is what drew me to this piece.

The top border must have been folded under and not exposed to as much light, as it is SO much lighter than the other 3 sides, which have all tanned a bit with age.

Thanks for the great information, too, Matias!  cheers

No one like my Aliens quads?

Rolled 1986 quad in nearly perfect excellent condition?

Aren't they hard to find rolled? All on ebay are folded and are in bad shape for £100.

Mine were £25 each.

I gave one to a friend as it was his late brothers favourite film.

I already got him a recalled one sheet a few years back. He paid for that one as it was £90 but this one was free.

Aren't i just the greatest????
