Title: Mel's new framed collection in Charlotte, NC (2016-present)
Post by: guest4955 on June 02, 2017, 02:57:57 AM
I moved to Charlotte from DC a year ago. Believe it or not I was happy until last month with just these four framed!

But last month my interest in the hobby revived so I had my assistants put up the rest of my surviving frames:

B1 frame:

Two. They come four days a week for four hours to run my errands.

One is 32 year old, a computer geek with 160 apps on his phone. He convinced me to buy a new primo TV. He kids me about the posters but I rile him for still living with his parents at 32!

The other is 63yo with a great sense of humor. He constantly rips into Trump. He likes me b/c I've been his only client in five years who doesn't have dementia. One of his other clients peed in public at a Wal-Mart recently.

Wait, you mean medical assistants or business assistants?  Did you actually completely quit your job?

Just general helpers. I had to quit my job in Dec. 2015 due to speaking difficulties. I went on disability, which provides OK income but not like the old days.

I lost that pic but just found this on the 'net:

Way too scary for me:

So how did Breakfast at Tiffany's, arguably the most valuable poster of the Mel 2.0 collection, survive the destruction of the Mel 1.0 collection?  What made you keep it and not the rest?

In mid-2015, I spent some of my $100K EMP proceeds on BAT and Sullivans Travels. Both were extremely expensive as you might imagine, although I paid FMV.

Here they are in my DC apt., my last pic from DC:

The final framed gallery there, eh?  Those two really have a classic look and appear to be in darn good condition.

Would you say those are your favorites that you've acquired over the years?

Sullivan's Travels is positively the best poster I've ever bought. BAT maybe not #2, as expensive as it was.

The Italian Repulsion has always been one of my favorite posters.  I should dig it up and put it up in my frame.  It would replace my Fearless Vampire Killers 3 sheet.  Polanski for Polanski.

I had the1S originally but liked it so much I had to "move up" to the even-more-stellar 3S:

You should do it. Wait, you actually frame 0.0001% of your collection nowadays, ha-ha?

I normally don't like violent imagery but had to make an exception for this entrancing beauty:

So BAT has been living in my quad frame for at least three years.

So I bought a bunch of quad posters to rotate monthly:

Like I said in one of my posts in the Intro. section, I totally lucked out by my apt. choice in Jan. 2016 when I moved to Charlotte.

My sisters checked out 10+ apt. complexes for me and showed me four.

I just randomly - and very luckily - picked this one with little thought and zero planning.

First, this apt. is on the first floor (has four floors with 200 apts.),  very close to the pool and is in the sunniest area. So the entire summer a flood of 20-something femmes camp out a few feet from my balcony!

Second, it just happens to have 13 ft. ceilings, by far the tallest in the complex. I gave this no consideration at all when I selected itsince I had only 19 one sheet posters left (just 1% of the 1900 MPs I purchased from 2009-2015). I also had only 20 frames left (out of 100 purchased during the same period.) I had no plans to rebuild my collection.

The MPs/frames sat unhung in my bedroom for a year. Then I hung up four. Then May 2017 came and the MP fever hit again. In four months I had a $50K collection of MPs and frames, 1/3 the value of my first collection.

*****

So now I have 34 frames and space for 15-20 more thanks to the high ceiling.

My bro-in-law kindly helped me hang 10 last night. His home ins. co. for some reason bought him a super-fancy $400 ladder extendable to 20 ft. so he was eager to make use of it.

*****

Voila!

Hammering a nail 12ft. up:

I see your brother in law nailing stuff.  I would strongly advise that you use a stud finder and screws (or at least anchors and screws) on the frames located right above the doors.  I would hate for one of those things to fall on someone's head.  Not good.

Time to let BAT go. I've glanced at it thousands of times for 2.5 years, so let somebody else enjoy it....

You need to take it out of the frame.  I can't imagine someone buying a $5,000 poster without inspecting its corners and checking the whole poster for tears and other imperfections.  You need multiple pictures, your own, not Bruce's.  And I would argue that most people will not want your frame and the $75 shipping associated with it.

Will do. It's by far the best price on eBay and even less than HA/EMP:

CHEERS!

Maybe but I just really get tired of posters displayed for long periods.

For most collectors - T excluded - we're really just renting posters by reselling them after a certain period.

Partially true - obviously the best price on ebay right now, but for the last 10 times this poster has appeared at auction between HA/EMP (all within the past two years), only twice has it gone over $5K.

But yours looks really nice and should sell - provided you listen to T and post some nice out of frame photos and reduce the shipping.
People like to complain about shipping already, I would never consider a mid-four figure purchase when someone wants to ding me $75 for shipping.

I did OK today  8)

Used various and sundry Pshop tools/extensions to clean up/blow up the source images to 150 dpi/27x41" lossless images and uploaded the 75MB images to a commercial printer, which printed them for $30 each:

The best of the lot - it's the alternative illustrated poster, not distributed to theaters (yes, it's copyrighted so technically it's a no-no to print this but nobody relevant cares if you don't sell it):

Public-domain, so you can print, sell, snort etc them:

8 lobby cards printed 27x41:

Poster slave? Ha-ha!

He doesn't love it but I don't overload him with MP tasks.

He worked in the music industry so we mostly chat about music. Most of his clients are elderly with some degree of dementia, so he likes the change of pace.

Seriously dumbfounded.  I honestly never though it would sell.

Which proves that I don't know shit about this hobby.

So I did the buyer a favor by shipping BAT in the frame yesterday.

Of course I thought it would cost only $75, since I used the HMP box and HMP only charges me $30 to ship via UPS and $4500 insurance should have cost $40 by USPS.

Nope....

So sent my asst to UPS first but....

****

Post office then rejected it bc too large and too valuable.

*****

UPS charged $180 to ship signature-required W/O insurance! It's practically indestructible but UPS could lose it in transit.

Should have unpacked it and shipped it folded but buyer was unhappy about 2 wk delayed shipment already, so I rolled the dice...

Can't break the plexiglass with a hammer but I suppose it's possible a 1000lb package could crush it:

Been creating/altering many uber-rare posters for full-size, HQ (150dpi) printing to fill my 42 frames:

24x36:

So the guy bought it in a frame, made you ship it in a frame, and now wants to linenback it and reframe it?  That's what I call a winner.

Thanks and I'll use your post as an excuse for random ruminations about blondes:

- male blondes (like me) are uncommon but 33% of white femmes are CURRENTLY blonde (50% peroxide blondes)
- nobody else noticed or cared, but I always noticed I was the only blonde male around wherever I went
- blondes have denser hair than others, but blonde men have higher-than-average rates of baldness
- male rock star lead singers are predominantly blonde (Rod Stewart, Sting, Bon Jovi, etc.) but guess who was a natural blonde and died his hair black (http://saltlakemailing.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Famous-Stamps.jpg)?
- a gay peroxide blonde stylist once told me "you've got great hair, you know it's the preferred color of my community"
- my last GF was a 35yo natural blonde who told me "funny, you're the first blonde guy I've ever dated"
- Robert Redford is one of the few blonde male movie stars with medium/long hair:
- blonde girls probably "do have more fun" but I prefer the uncommon brunette/blue eyes ("perfect wifey material")

Yep, there are an UNBELIEVABLE 20 million+ "subscribers" in the five subreddits I monitor, get bombed with many new threads per hour.

But, without bragging excessively, I'm unique, with thousands of hours each in Photoshop, website design, hours spent on "hard core" MPC forums, etc. plus - perhaps most importantly - one of the largest MP frame collections (50 currently, 75 previously) - and peeps are ALWAYS more intrigued by pics of framed MPs. So I can put together successful, interesting photo collages to promote the hobby.

But to answer your question, I always link to MPC.guide, and its Resource page links to APF.

From what I've seen, the ONLY serious MP collectors are here and it's not very active/good, mostly the subreddit founder posting junk like "Smoky and the Bandit":

https://www.reddit.com/r/ClassicMoviePosters/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/ClassicMoviePosters/)

No watermarked images/blatant promotion allowed on Reddit and that rule is enforced!

Great 40x60"!!

How much does a frame like that run? I want to frame my Star Wars same size, but I'm sure it ain't gonna be cheap.  Gotta be a monster (pun intended) to hang as well.

Thanks all, and I "only" paid $1,500 for it - it's LBed/restored - from EMP, same as I paid for the much smaller 1S several years ago. Most collectors prefer the smaller size for various and sundry reasons. Frame is $150 from SpotlightDisplays.com.

Funny, one of my atty colleagues complained his wife gave him heck for spending $65 on a Scott Pilgrim - his favorite movie - Mondo poster! He finally framed it and displayed it ... in his office.

It's a cool poster, for sure.  Maybe I should watch it and start collecting on the title.  You know, if I haven't seen it, I won't buy it.  Is it a good movie?

Sorry to nit-pick, but how did you surmise that yours is likely the last surviving copy?  Your copy was from eMovieposter (backed in a European style) and Heritage has sold two other copies (one on paper (https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/science-fiction/the-astounding-she-monster-american-international-1958-poster-40-x-60-ronnie-ashcroft-an-editor-turned-producer-m/a/640-28897.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515) and one on linen American style (https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/science-fiction/the-astounding-she-monster-american-international-1958-poster-40-x-60-/a/7014-89601.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515#)).  I'm sure Todd Spoor has one as well as he has one of the largest B horror and sci-fi collections of 30x40 and 40x60 cardstock posters.

One thing I've learned collecting over the years is that there is probably always another one lurking out there somewhere...

Lol, no "Astounding She Monster" is definitely not a good movie (unlike "War of the Worlds" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", which are both pretty great, especially the latter).  Great poster though.  It belongs to the rather large group of terrible 1950s sci-fi-fi flicks that are mostly remembered for their poster art (such as "Attack of the 50ft Woman" and "Invasion of the Saucer Men").

Agree with you, Matt. Even if there is actually one example that has ever been auctioned or seen on the market (regardless of title), I would think that it's better to say that one owns "an only KNOWN copy."

And in the above case, there are at least 3 known copies (unless one of the HA copies was sent to emp, later on down the road).

They all appear to be unique based on how they were restored and the described damage.

 thumbup

So then there looks to 3 be (and maybe 4), unless Todd Spoor is possibly an owner of one of the HA copies (and assuming he has a copy).

When I went to his home and saw much of his framed/hung collection of 40x60s, I didnt see that one on the wall, but it could also have been stored away, as wall space quickly disappears with this size poster that's also framed.

So I’ve devolved into an Olympics-watching zombie, so have spared the MPC forums from my reign of terror. But big developments have sprung up….

First, I fired my year-long assistant and his “senior care” employer bc I don’t need “care” and several other reasons. I can’t drive, sweep, or handle movie poster frames, but I can do most everything else, although VERY clumsily and slowly. Too bad, bc my former assist was FINALLY becoming competent with respect to MPs. So I hired another 33yo former assist “off the books” for 6 hrs a week and told him he had to cheerfully work on MPs for 2-3 hrs every week. We’ll see how long that lasts although I’m paying him very well…..

Second, I got booted off the “movies subreddit” (with 19 million members) for unknown reasons. I long ago stopped reading Reddit comments and blocked Reddit emails to avoid the evil trolls and looney tunes who infest there, which is too bad bc 85% of interactions are positive. (BTW the Internet evil trolls is a big problem for Olympians’ state of mind too. Lots of stories reporting that many go offline for the duration of the Olympics.)

I endorsed HA/EMP and promoted MPC.guide in the comments, which is presumably not permitted, so that probably killed me. Maybe they didn’t like so many unusual MP posts on a "movies" venue? So Reddit no mas…until I’m ready for more punishment. Reddit is weird, not really a forum. It gets deluged with new threads daily and members vote/comment immediately and never revisit that thread, so it’s very ephemeral.

My last submissions (and NOBODY has ever posted anything like them, though they may suck). Max your browser and click on images to expand (6000px horizontal on Reddit, not here:

The one with the red dress is more rare.

From Film on Paper:

Emovieposter also note that this particular print of style D was actually done in error and there are two versions of it out there:

Also note that this is the ultra-rare “red dress” variant of the Style D poster! These posters were sent as a sample to Disney (who insisted that the dress be changed to pink) and less than 100 were printed!

I always like it when I learn that I own something a little harder to find.  I refrain from calling it ultra rare, because 100 is not ultra rare.  It’s not even rare.  Just hard to find.

Finally got the exquisite "The Killers" (1956rr) partially-restored/lbacked and randomly perched it on one wall. No planning at all but then I realized the four - GWTW is a 1970rr Japan B1 BTW - had to have a common theme. But what?

How about "What the American public always wants is a tragedy with a happy ending." (William Dean Howells - 1919). But I've only seen GWTW, which definitely meets that maxim. Better suggestions?

Yep 275 MPs patiently awaiting framing/displaying :)

Always a delight to see the Let's Fall in Love poster, Mel!!!  It is a star!  Okie

Very nice, Mel.  I’m sure one of your many assistants had a blast hanging those posters so high up.

I hope they got a nice tip.

Kilian mylar MPs are ze best!

http://moviepostercollectors.guide/MPC_Showcase_Kilian.html (http://moviepostercollectors.guide/MPC_Showcase_Kilian.html)

I owned these two WFRRs from 2010-15 and rebought both in the last year, finally today rejoined on wall (high up - but no tipping apt staff(haha)).

They are printed on heavy HQ gold mylar and "glitter" in the right light. On left is the "rejected" red dress Style E (samples improperly leaked/sold to public); on right is pink Style D.

So everybody has a story? Yep. My new personal assistant Jenel - 5th choice but by far better than rest - is a 33yo SEVEN time mama, FOUR compensated surrogate pregnancies, ONE ☝️ mildly autistic child 👶 of her own, LOVES ❤️ horror movies, HUSBAND runs Best Buy Geek 🤓 Squad, was BETRAYED by friend who hired 4 teenagers who robbed her family at gunpoint of family safe that supposedly had $30K surrogate cash 💰 but only had $5K; now whole gang “enjoying “ jail 😎

A pair of beautiful Goldmember legs is a good start for the empty wall space, Sundance! I think you also may have set a minor record with the length of that last sentence! I think I hung in there with you and didn't get bucked off: the robber gang went to jail, and not your new assistant, right? Okie

The GWTW Mondo is super nice...but I don't get the whole Mondo thing. Great art---but are they legit "movie posters"?

I think that’s a very low price for that ET poster.  I bought the one above because the price was to good, even though I already own a few.  I just like good deals, but then you end up with 5 copies of the same poster for no reason.

Your framed gallery and collection are shaping up nicely.  The Astounding She Monster 40x60 and 3 sheet there are exceptional.  Are those on permanent display?  When are you really stepping up to the "elite" level and acquiring a flat file cabinet?

Thx! Long-term rotate status. I "only" have 300 MPs so will exceptionally stupidly keep them on floor! Doh.gif

Maybe the only surviving original:

A Woman Commands (RKO, 1932). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A.
This was international silent screen star Pola Negri's first American talkie, in which she plays a noblewoman ordered to marry the Serbian King Alexander (Roland Young). Her heart really belongs to a gallant army captain (Basil Rathbone), seen on this poster, but she goes through with her arranged marriage. Although the picture was a box office flop, the posters from the film are very rare and beautiful. Professional restoration has addressed slight paper loss at the lower crossfold, a tear in the top left corner, and a misfold at the bottom. The linen has been trimmed to the border. Fine+ on Linen.

Funny pic! My wedding gift to my cuz (left) and his new bride. (Partly obscured of course). My advice for gifting MPs: (1) Send images of potential MPs, (2) have the chosen MP restored (nobody likes folds), and (3) explain that classic-era MP originals are rare (they had ZERO clue this was rare).

I have to congratulate you for your kindness, Mel.  You’ve given away quite a few posters over the years, to forum members too.  You’re a very generous fellow, even if I’m no fan of the poster you just posted.  Hopefully the no-eye-folks are.

So my 29yo cousin's favorite movie is "It Happened One Night" (1934). I have B+ Photoshop skills, so I created a custom 30"x40" poster for her and sent it to a local print shop, since original MPs are extremely rare and expensive. [Frame from www.hollywoodposterframes.com, MP image from www.ha.com, photo images from www.doctormacro.com]

Bad pic, but 30x40" framed:

I’m way inland but who knows. Paper says 6 inches rain.

In May 1995 my 1st floor apt in New Orleans was flooded and took 4 feet of water, ruining everything. It was surreal wading through streets flooded with water in pitch dark! My apt was above sea level so I didn’t take threat seriously.

As Pop once said, "things are messed up in the usual way."

I took out 10+ loans to pay for MPs during Round 1.

Took out two more recently:

Yes, I'm fine financially. It's a very responsible way to pay off MP debt in 1-2 years, instead of credit cards/pocket sharks. (And I could easily sell stuff to pay these off, just don't want/need to).

That’s why movie poster collectors always live on the second floor!

What did you get?

So not braggin' - more of a "do not follow the path of madness I've taken."

I poorly invested $150K on everything related to MPs in Round 1. My consigned MPs sold very well but after 30% commission and 50 abandoned frames I lost $50K. My "enjoyment fee" - still internally debating value 8) :o

Now I've spent $70K in Round 2 plus several thousand (??) on assistants helping me with MPs.

The owner of probably the last poster store in super-expensive rent Manhattan gave this 70s poster to me for free in 2014 - and it survived the 2015 purge with others in forgotten tube:

It was huge store, thousands of posters everywhere. He said he planned to close and go online. He even showed me the basement, had full-time employees linen-backing there.

Thanks guys! Nothing too fancy in "mystery survivor" tube - 20 posters, including Vertigo 1996rr, 2001 1980rr, several travel posters. So only 39/1900 survived Round 1, including 19 framed posters.

I reacquired these "she-devils with baditude"! I foolishly sold one of the very few remaining originals in 2015. I placed a permanent search on eBay for it 19 months ago and it unexpectedly popped up last week. ("Dynamite Women" was second title and its MP is much rarer than first's "The Great Texas Dynamite Chase.")

A cornucopia of rarity! In November 2012 these three "ridiculously rare" MPs graced my wall. (1) I spent countless hours trying to find this LAC international 1S. The seller found it in an LA poster shop. (2) An LA theater employee sold me the Pulp Fiction "Lucky Strikes" 1S. (3) The international TBL occasionally popped up on Ebay then. Sold all in 2015. Sad!

LACs have completely disappeared AGAIN.

Lucky Strikes will be $$$ forever.

Lo and behold! Janis (1974) made an encore performance in my apt yesterday. Had this in 2012, sold in 2015, recently rebought. Uncommon 40x60 format.

Funny, the wildly entertaining "Ronnie Woods Show" is now showing in U.S. (AXS-TV). RW says that Janis chased him out the bathroom window exclaiming "give me the black hair one!"😂

You can hire PAs on Craigslist easily:

Part of my ad:

Since Jan 2017 I have employed several personal assistants. The most recent is a stay-at-home mother who is resuming full-time work, so I need a new PA starting first week of October. You must be able to work a 4 hour minimum shift every 4-5 days, averaging 12+ hours total every two weeks OR 3 hours every 3-4 days (4 times every two weeks). Schedule is very flexible, any day between 9am – 10pm. Ideal for students, retirees, second job, etc.

You will be paid $15 an hour every two weeks for the time you enter/exit my apartment. You must be pleasant/lively/flexible, have a valid drivers license and personal car, and do not use illegal drugs or have non-traffic criminal convictions. Your job duties will include:

-   Movie poster assistance, opening packages, carefully handling and framing rare/valuable posters;

-   Grocery shopping and picking up meals;
-   Light housekeeping, laundry, sweeping, etc. (maid service does all other cleaning);
-   Driving me in my Mustang convertible wherever I want to go.

I don’t need and won’t tolerate financial, religious or medical advice. I’m a moderate Democrat. Positively no negativity, racist, nasty, or sexist comments or jokes.

I wrote "illegal drugs"- pot is legal in CA.

But not in DC, although I'm sure everything's legal within the White House's walls.  These people need heavy drugs to forget who they're working for.

Not sure what Washington DC or politicians have to do with Charlotte, NC.  :-\

That sounds like a rad part-time job.  Curating, hanging out, cruising in the Mustang.  I'm surprised more people haven't applied.

Maybe one of your future assistants can fabricate a cabinet for all them posters on the floor.  I don't know how you can leave all your stuff unsecured like that.

Good work on the gallery.  thumbup thumbup

So the 2018 mid-terms are over - a mixed bag baby!  8)

Anyways I've been posting on several FB groups and run across a few cool cats:

+ an author here in Charlotte who has been collecting eclectic MPs for year including:

[this is Spanish version he has official US rr version]

+ a mega-collector like Thierry; name is Rob, lives in Canada; has 15K MPs (!!!) stored in three cities in Canada; was an usher, on TV; he's a busy guy, maybe I can recruit him  here.

Does size matter? 🤔 Er, OF COURSE I'm referring to movie poster (MP) size! My 27x41" "War of the Worlds" 1S vs. Bruce Willis' 81x81" 6S. 💪💪 (Yes, THAT Bruce Willis!)

I tried to "soft sell" him on APF but who knows if he'll bite?

+ does not frame, has a 600ft apt in Toronto
+ no website, does not sell, just collects
+ apparently does NOT carefully track his collection, says he "probably"owns the famous "Canadian" LAC:

Does not frame, does not sell, just collects...Ha, my type of collector!!!  Nice :)

A 600sq/ft apartment or 6,000sq/ft?  I could not collect if I didn't have my collection with me.  Just to file and everything.  I can't imagine having to drive somewhere to store my posters.

Also, no website doesn't work for me.  As much as I don't like to frame movie posters, I enjoy looking at my collection from time to time.  Which is the purpose of my website.

So even though we're similar, we're not.

Tried posing Qs to Rob - what are your superstar MPs? - but just got a brief response that he doesn't have many pre-1960 MPs.

As always, I'll try again sooner or later. He is active on the FB Groups.

I think I previously "reported" that the deceased mother of an eBay seller was an usher - like Canadian Rob - but in the 60s. She somehow acquired two rare/valuable Veronica Lakes. I guess ushers get MP fever!  bed1

My writing studio is a vintage camper. My friend Jim helped me rip out the Dinette booth and put down new carpet. I added a desk and comfortable swivel chair. It has a full bath, kitchen and bedroom, though I rarely use any of them. Sometimes I watch movies, I've fallen asleep a couple of times and I have made coffee, but that's about it. Usually just my writing studio. I do keep old movies on constantly with the sound down, And classical music. Sets the tone for writing
