I'm still waiting for Ari to give me a price, on that Vincent Price.... waiting1
Ves, Are all these done by the same people, and who are they..??
I've shared this before, but figured I would do it again here.
All work done by Dario.

I think it's un-Priceable now Ves has it, Chris... ;)
Nice, Enki. thumbup Aside from the distinct fold lines that broke thru the printed image, the fact that this folded poster was also rolled, makes for an impossible situation to deal with display-wise, if it was left as it was. Nothing like wavy folds to brighten your day. ;)

you all seen it but for the sake of al in one place
And yes, Jaime also did this, certainly first class resto work.
Unfortunately my Esther Williams 1SH (http://bit.ly/Mj1SLa) required a large amount of work to restore her and there was some discussion on whether she could survive well enough to do a good enough job on her so not so sure it is worth it and have left it for now. However, I have just got back images on two restoration jobs just completed.
Snow White (R58) had paper loss, tears and holes and a large(ish) stain bottom right corner...
Lolita (1962) had very severe foxing, stains and a few holes/paper loss.
Thank-you Dario!
Emailed my daughter the pics, she replied "...really like Lolita, Daddy."
Hmmm, hasn't called me Daddy in quite a few years...
Guess that one is gone... Push-overs aren't we? For our little girls...
Although I don't think I would discussing that one with my daughter ;)

yeah, on two counts me thinks
this was me before restoration

that is so aprepoe
Wondered why he was saying 'after the writer of The Raven'
I'm getting a bunch of stuff restored etc and just got an update from Dario (http://www.vintagemovieart.ca/) - I think I'll keep him on...
Anyway here's one that I am particularly fond of for some reason, it's going on the wall when it gets here:

Very nice, David. When is this poster from? The MGM logo makes me think the 1970s/ early 80s?
What a difference in paper color too! Seems like it had tanned quite a bit over the years.
It looks wonderful! thumbup
Jeff
Another winner, David. clap
All three are a great transformation. Amazing what a wash and bleach can do!
David,
What was (or caused) the cloudy /foggy appearance on your Taxi Driver, pre-restore?
Jeff
Bad photography (lighting) :-\
Bad photography (lighting) :-\
David's breath. ;)
Come closer and and I'll fog up all over those sexy legs of yours... ;)
Yikes!!! That's why I live 700 odd km's away.
That came up a treat! thumbup
May I ask who restored it?
Nice poster, Mirosae.
It looks to me as if the only 'damage' were the fold lines.
Did you just have the lines touched up or did you have the poster linen-backed as well?
Very cool.
The Christmas teaser is my favorite from the film.
cheers
Now that you have the Photobucket functions down pat, we're all interested in what other beauties you have in your collection.
Start your own thread, post away...give us a good-see.
Excuse me if I'm pushy. wynk
Mine too Brude- hey, hey, hey great minds think alike ;)
Small minds never differ... :D
A really nice job on the restore too. Congrats
Mario Cueva via MPGrading.
Matt, Gratz!
I love. LOVE! Your My Favorite Wife.
The movie is a comedy and has one of my favorite scenes all time and the poster DOES do it justice
Supurb... all ready to frame. I hope we get to see them up on the wall Matt

Those posters are beautiful, Matt.
cheers
Note: I dont want to ship out my posters to US or anywhere else.
I wonder why this statement?
Probably the associated VAT fees etc on getting them back?
The poster had some pencil and car tire marks

Can't read accurately the fourth word, but I believe the pencil marks are an obscenity. ;D
Poor Ava...
Thanks Matias. The poster could be worth more now it has a story to tell
I'd leave the writings, just for vandalism's sake. :)

Funny having a lady collector - just look at the paper weights!
Ha ha! Nice catch! Love it.
^ I like how Dario removed the snipe. I would be curious to know how he did it ;) as I tried with what I believe an equivalent product to bestine with out success also on a daybill with same snipe. thumbup
The second image is the result after I had tried to remove the snipe (using "un-du" from Bunnings) - what was left was just too hard to lift (even tho I soaked it in "un-du") so I gave up and sent it to Dario...much better than I could achieve obviously. Un-DU works well on old tape, snipes like this a different story it seems.
The commentary courtesy of Dario Casadei (http://www.vintagemovieart.ca) so I could post on my Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Vintage-Movie-Posters/195341783820229?ref=hl) for my followers and friends, and also so I could give Dario a free plug.
Is that a prequel to top gun?
I am happy that gay poster is now all straightened out
Is that a prequel to top gun?
It's certainly a black label poster now!
Looks superb Dave.
Btw, how did you get it home?
( I like the music, too).
Agreed. What is that... FAFDM?
...but I worry for Michael and his back on the table.

Commissioned work: LB and restoration (missing paper and general damage)
Cost: £180
POSTER: The Barefoot Contessa (1954). Argentinian poster. Condition: fair to good.
PROS: It was local, no shipping costs and no hassle. Quick turn around and Tim was a pleasure to deal with, polite and very nice.
CONS: The poster had some pencil and car tire marks and cameback with them, it looks very dirty. I will not bring any other posters back. BUT glad I went and gave it a try. Not one of my favourite Bogart posters so not a great loss, but certainly not happy with the work. Another poster that goes back to the closet.
Well done Rosa, that looks much better.
Did MPA Gallery not fix the problems at the initial time because you didn't want to pay extra for that service or did they say it couldn't be fixed or was there a misunderstanding what you wanted done?
clap clap clap clap
How did you do it?
Thanks Charlie :) With an artist eraser (2-3 hours, lightly touching the paper)..and watercolour pencils (another 2-3 hours)
And a bottle of Champagne
Does this sound OK to you?
;D

None of this should be surprising of course ;)

Thank you erik1925! It was an important item for me and PM was great about it. The signatures were a concern but posed no problem. I would have them restore anything in a heartbeat.

I recently had this Scarface 40x60 restored by Lumiere Poster Restoration (http://lumiereposter-restoration.com/). They did a great job and they're nice people to deal with. It took a little longer than I had hoped, and a few things on it aren't perfect, but overall it's a huge improvement from when I sent it to them.
Before. It's difficult to see a lot of the damage - numerous creases, tears, damaged edges, pinholes, yellowing, stains (a few that ran almost the entire vertical height), etc.
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx303/NeoLoco80/DSC02676_zps7334966f.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/NeoLoco80/media/DSC02676_zps7334966f.jpg.html)
After. It looks almost like new. Upon very close inspection, a few things are not perfect, but overall it's great work. It's really amazing how it was restored without backing, now it is a lot more stable long-term, as it was cleaned and de-acidified and with gel impregnated into it, and it still has the vintage aroma. A brilliant method for restoration.

Michael that looks fantastic. Who did the work?
Believe it or not. Jaime Mendez did the work on that one.
His work is so good it's criminal! ;)
Most impressive, Rosa!
Looks great - while I don't want to answer for David/Dario there is no way they came out looking like that without being airbrushed...
Just got some pics in from Dario, he is providing some commentary which I will be adding to some other pictures and posting on Facebook, needless to say [insert praise for Dario here] and I am quite happy!
Is the description elsewhere??
I'm not much good at this face tube thingy.... :P
Why can't people paste to the forum, laziness...?
Bruce sold this back in 2010. Sadly not to me.

Couple of Italian 2ps that both my wife and I really dig. Sent them off to Mario Cueva at Lumiere Restoration...he did a bang up job to say the least.
The LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER had all kinds of issues, almost hard to catch them all with the bad iphone before pic below. There was tons of rips and tears, a bunch of paper loss along the folds, and McQueen's face looked like someone had target practice with it. Opened it twice before I sent it to Mario, and each time it would shed bits of paper like it had a disease. Looks great now.

This one had some marker/writing on the back, stains, rips, general wear and tear (along Newman's head especially). Since we wanted to display it, the two pieces it was in made it nearly impossible, so we had it sent over for resto as well. Again, love it.

My kids like to see how close they can get before I freak out, haha. Regardless, their feet are kinda funny to look at next to the posters for sake of scale.

Thanks all...appreciate the positive feedback. I love seeing pics like these, so happy to finally post some of my own here.
Harry C. - haha, no worries...I cannot believe that pic of Sean's sixer was buried in the SD thread...ugh, spent forever going through ever other resto thread here.
At this point, I am leaning toward getting the split overlays to get it going on the wall, and when I find something singular that I like, I will upgrade.
the other one was so confused why I would pay 'more than a few bucks for stuff like that' yet alone display in our house. Yikes!
OK last offer this plus the box Revenge for Rio. ;D
NOOOOooooo.... You must succumb to my will. "These are the posters you are looking for."
Makes me want to back mine euro-style as well.
I was looking at the original image and something seemed off. Then I figured it out. As laid out, in the original photo, Valentino would stand all of 3 feet tall. ;) I did a (really bad) down 'n dirty mock-up as a comparison, since the emovie description states that there was a good chunk of the center paper missing. Again, tho, it would look incredible restored (if a visual example/PB image were available to reference when doing it).

A blog entry from Postermountain relating to the Them! poster that was washed & cleaned without backing (this has been mentioned before and a heat press was needed but still interesting):

Thanks for this, Chris. This is exactly what I was talking about. What is interesting is that they did not need to put the poster in an actual bath. I assumed that was just how it was done unless you were doing spot cleaning on a suction table. I have some french one panels that are really dirty and could use a cleaning, I might give something like this a try with some of my cheapo posters that I can replace easily in case (or when) I botch the job!
I do all my own stunts.
I do all my own stunts.
With some research and a good deal of help (especially from Charlie), Ive managed to do some of my own stuff:
Great job with the backing and resto. Looks like you substantially reduced the dark areas around the fold lines, without over-bleaching the whole thing.
Cool. cool1

Impressive results! Would you mind telling us more about what all steps you did? Is this only conservation -- i.e. washing, bleaching and mounting? Or does it include restoration as well? I know you said you didn't do paper fills, but did you do paint touch-up, air-brushing, or other steps?
Amazing job, really.
Still very, very impressed by your wash results and the removal of the toning/discolouration!
I am amazed that a couple of non pros can do it, even attempt it.
Well done,
Great job!!! Looks like that bleaching tip was the ticket! Can't wait to see what else you can do.
Thanks, Charlie. It really did make all the difference. Now I just need to buy more posters, Im running out of stuff that needs to be backed!I can ship a couple over...you know, in the interest of giving you some practice items! ;)

Mario @ Lumiere - judge for yourself:
I had a close look over The Glass Key image, personally I might keep looking for another restorer. Thanks
I had a close look over The Glass Key image, personally I might keep looking for another restorer. Thanks
Looks much better than they were though!
Why do you say that?
Eagle eye Steve! To be honest, that wouldn't trouble me, he managed to restore it keeping all the original lettering and logo, reconstructing the missing bit. It is a difficult job so overall i think he did a rather good job, but I see what you see :)
Was the printing of The Glass Key full bleed to the left, or was it cropped prior to finding and restoration?
Nice jobs all though.
Bump. Appears to have fallen through the cracks...
My eagle eye is like a blind moles eye compared to Chris's eagle eye!

Maybe those smudges happened when Chris cried tears of joy on viewing the freshly restored insert. ;D
:'( to paper.... :'( to paper
Chris (csm?)? I thought he was as blind as a bat!!?!? ;)
Daybills Jeff! :)
But yes there was definitely some joy in seeing the finished product
I have had a lot of Charlie dislikes the term linenbacked posters, but I haven't had much art recreation done. I do have a 6 sheet with an area the size of a baseball recreated. Heritage sold me the poster as Mint obviously not seeing the recreation and I missed it for some while too - it was very well done. Sure my expectation may be too high, I dont know, though I would think recreating text should be able to be more accurately done than the below example and a plastic circle template like used in schools could get the circle correct. I guess I expect too much from professionals!
Like I said they look a lot better, so well done. It does make me very hesitant of buying linenbacked posters knowing all the sins they can hide. I try to must ensure that I get the opportunity to inspect them in person before parting with cash. Note to self... good luck with that one.

Or if you'd like how about some kudos on the work done to replace the 'Not Suitable for General Exhibition' circle
I prefer not to upset you further :P
They look great, Chris.
Except for that Forbidden Planet daybill.
Colors are all wrong.
Send it here, so I can examine it further.
coffee
New Zealand? Cough. Cough..
Well, that might explain it.
Cough. Cough...
Still think you should send it along so I can confer with my resident Kiwi.
Its a sordid mess.
Cough...cough...
We'll get it right once paper is in hand.
Cough. Cough..
(This example being an NZ daybill)
Why oh why is the Y missing? Was it uncirculated to theatres, the poster never reached the censors yet?
It is a good question Steve since, based on the poster's pre-restoration condition, it was clearly used!
Glass Key - After
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr156/Assgoblin/Restoration/IMG_8127edit.jpg)
Yes the Glass Key was printed that way and was not trimmed. Just a misalignment on the printing press or the cutting afterwards. Many Richardson Studio daybills are like that
Bruce is selling one that is pre-restoration and appears to be fully framed. No left hand full bleed.
Seems to be a one-off anomaly.
http://auctions.emovieposter.com/Bidding.taf?_function=detail&Auction_uid1=3827316
You can still see the fold line touch ups to a degree with the right light and angle because it is a modern gloss poster. I can correct that but that would require methods I don't like to use.

No one can ever say truthfully that poster collecting is easy!
Thank you, sir.
Yeah, I wouldn't be opposed to sending more work to JM. Of the few folks who have restored some of my posters, my preferred place for linen backing is Poster Conservation, and for gelatin resizing, Poster Mountain.
This one just arrived. Although it wasn't in bad condition, it's a big improvement.
I had originally planned on sending it to Poster Conservation for the restoration (still my favorite place for linen backing), but I wanted to see the work of Jaime Mendez and decided to send it to him, and overall it was a good experience.

Beautiful job there, Mike. clap clap
And the 2nd pic looks great! Colors look as they should, even lighting,.... bravo!
And i have had the opportunity to meet Mario, too, on several occasions, when he dropped and picked up from me.
A nice guy, personable, was happy to talk and explain, and really knows his stuff.
Plus, i got to see what other poster goodies he had in his vehicle, that he had either just picked up (to work on), or was delivering back to clients in the area, here, when i walked him back to his car. It truly was like looking on a candy store shelf !
Mike, That looks like a great job indeed. I have a huge respect for Mario Cueva, he did a fantastic work on some posters of mine which were in an awful state. He really brought yours to life again. Very happy for you - now question is... will you frame it? :P ;)
Those all look really great, Brandon.
Congrats on all 3 being done to your satisfaction.
Thanks.
Considering my recent experience with restoration, that I mentioned in other threads, I just want to note that I truly do not expect absolute perfection. I just appreciate good work, and when the whole process goes smoothly.
Many posters are not perfect when acquired by collectors. So i'm with you in that thinking. You just want the work done that you asked for, and without any additional "issues" or hassles.
cheers
Nice job by the PC folks, there, Brandon. thumbup
That's a B1, right?
Thanks.
Yeah, it's a Japanese B1, the only one I've seen for the movie.
What was the turn around time?
There is another, quite similar style for this one.
About 3 weeks.
Here it is, a B2 though as you said. I think I prefer yours though.
Very nice job as is to be expected from Jaime, always great work, same for Dario. Will have to see how I compare, doing one of these ESB's this weekend.
Unless he's in the midst of HA Signature work. Then other restoration work for individuals appears to take more a back seat, (or so it seems), or is passed to others in his studio. I think we can all recall Neo's account and experience: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,10063.0.html
And it's not about saying that JM doesnt usually do good work (as Tob's example shows) but about where his priorities are at certain times of the year.
Charlie et al.
I normally remove paper snipes from one sheets with alcohol given that it evaporates quickly although I know there are better options. What would you use to remove a snipe from an older silkscreen where the ink is more pronounced? I'm scared the alcohol will end up smudging the ink as opposed to newer offset printing. Should I just leave it?
http://www.emovieposter.com/gallery/inc/archive_image.php?id=12398243
Thanks for looking Charlie.
Without a full wash, I would be worried about bleeding.. Matte poster like this often have loose ink that can run a bit. I would also assume that the snipe is just water based. You could try take a moist paper towel (not wet) the same size as the snipe and let it sit for 10-15 minutes and see if the snipe lifts... Another option is something called Methylcellulose... It is an ether but basically a weak adhesive. It can be used to remove other adhesives like that behind the snipe or wet the snipe. One thing that is nice about MC is that if dilute enough it will not impact the image and dry clear almost acting as paper sizing.i will give that a go. Many thanks, sir! thumbsup.gif
Else, I think it looks pretty damn good as is. Good luck!
