Title: Favorite Purchases of 2012
Post by: eatbrie on December 13, 2012, 12:05:05 AM
The year is ending...  It's time to show off your gear.  I bought just about 1,200 posters in 2012, from Justin Bieber to my mega rare French Gone With the Wind.  In no particular order, here are my favs.  Not necessarily the most expensive (although there are some expensive pieces), just the ones that mean the most to me.

Once your done with the Bus Stop lobbies, just send them over to my place. ;)

You've got a film poster that was never meant to be. Quite rare. The film/episodes released only in Germany in 1967, so they say. Nice one T.

After 5+ years of collecting I still only own like 500 (ish) posters.  1200 in one year is crazy.  You need help.  You should try to get some distance from your obsession.  Feel free to send me any of the above for safe keeping  ;D

Seriously though, this thread should probably be where all the APF members pick out our favorites from your best purchases.  It's so awesome to see them all tiled up like that.  I appreciate your website, but you need to post you acquisitions on APF more often!

Let me dig through my purchases to see what I ended up with this year...

Some very nice Italian Bardot's up there.  Some of those I plan to go for next year.  I'm going to wait a little longer to post a few of my favorites because the ones that will top my list haven't arrived yet.  I finally bought the #1 poster on my want list yesterday, and #2 may me mine next week.  I would like to petition that Paul Waines post some stuff though, I always get enjoyment out of seeing what he's found at least post your Top 10, Paul  :P...

I like posting some of my gear once a year.  There is obviously much more stuff than the few posters I posted above, but the rest can be seen on my site, which is also the main reason why I don't post my new acquisitions.  1) At the rate I'm going, it would be like 3 or 4 posters a day, and 2) I personally find it a bit flashy.  I understand that there wouldn't be a forum if people did not post their gear, but it's just not my thing.  Once a year is perfect.  And my website for the new stuff.

Chris is odd but he isn't a bodgy

According to the Australian slang dictionary (who knew there was such a thing?!) http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

Bodgy = of inferior quality

So for those paying attention this means I would share my last Rolo with Ari but definitely not Aussie Matt

Some nice stuff there, guys.  Keep 'em coming.

Charlie, I really like the fact that you collect by actors.  You will end up with great Taylor, Portman and Kelly's collections.  Although I might give you a run for your money on the Kelly front.

Here's something I recently got...

What does that mean - 5 star posters - and according to whom?  Why is Jaws a 5 star poster when it shows up regularly at auction?  Is it price, rarity, or just the Mel-o-meter?

Yep,  I almost thought about asking you to let me throw up the FFDM and FFOD on the wall over the holidays; but I don't have any damn daybill frames...  Maybe someone should start a rent-a-poster service... :) I definitely enjoy it when your paper is with me, Matt...

Poster Rentals...not a bad idea. lol.

You can throw'em on the wall if you want to. Just use pins/blu tack or sticky tape if need be.

Fridge magnets...just don't put the top half on the freezer and the bottom on the fridge door, could get a little dicey. ;)

Nearly forgot...a stapler works well too!

I was trying to figure out which of my Godzilla-related purchases was my favorite this year so I could have something to post, when I realized that this was my favorite purchase of the year:

It's a hard one to call, I've bought hundreds of posters this year, some dirt cheap and others not so, but I think many of my favourites are the ones purchased and were then were restored (by Dario http://www.vintagemovieart.ca). I love the fact they have been bought back to life no longer lost to the ravages of aging

There's plenty of others but this one rates as a highlight, it was in pretty rough shape but when it was completed it looked great and went to the wall in my office.

I like how we all have our areas of interest...  I'm into French and Italian, Paul is into quads, Chris loves his Daybills.  It does make sense that we primarily collect what we are most accustomed to... and what we have easier access to.  It is what defines us and what makes collecting so interesting.

I focused on getting a few more one sheets this year and also linen backing 17 more daybills. I think I brought about 50 posters all up in 2012.

Got around a dozen lobby cards which is also down on previous years.

Gotta say there are other people's favourite purchases of 2012 that have gone on my envy list....

T - I have fawned after that Tradita ever since I saw it, I still have a spot reserved at my house if I ever find one, it is beautiful
Kovac - Pale Rider is the best version I have seen, Clint strumming a pistol is great
Matt - don't remember that Superman one, pretty awesome
Steve - your six sheeters are always a brilliant you are to be congratulated on all of them
Crowzilla - Bogie is sexy
Starling - not a fan of Bette, but that is really a great poster
Matais - I think the Isabel Sarli one is awesome simply as I remember the story you added about the sig when you first posted it, plus she was hot in her day...
Mel - since you moved into the 40s/50s you rarely put a foot wrong, I love almost all of them
Charlie - Grace Kelly, Green Fire is just lovely
Paul - Barbarella is definitely a highlight

Agreed...some beautiful posters in this thread. It's great that you guys take the time to share, I really enjoy seeing all the different posters (even through the pangs of jealousy!!).

My fave 3 that I have bought this year are:

The Thing - UK One Sheet. I love this film and have long admired the UK one sheet...saw a rolled copy pop up and was thrilled to win it

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8082/8278360889_3d42a86e3a_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/51376603@N05/8278360889/)

Requiem for a Dream - UK Quad. I started collecting about a year after this came out so missed it and they seem to be pretty scarce (perhaps the theatrical run wasn't very large). I finally saw one on ebay that was framed...took a gamble that it'd be in good condition when removed from the frame and luckily it was! I think the design is pretty striking, a bit like the film.

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8080/8279340948_3d536690cc_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/51376603@N05/8279340948/)

Blade Runner - 30" x 40". I'm a big Blade Runner fan and have had a one sheet on my want list since I started collecting (I have a quad, but prefer Alvin's artwork). I've have either been too poor to afford one or been put off by authentication worries, so was really pleased to grab a 30 x 40.

Nice posters Tob.  I did not know the UK one sheet existed for the Thing.  I always liked the art on the quad, and UK one sheet is the best of both worlds. Very well done.

I have a folded copy of this poster.  Congrats on finding a nice rolled one.  I usually don't care whether a poster is rolled or folded, but it does make a difference on darker posters.

Your mockery and slander will cost you. Specifically, it will cost you one free linen-backing of a one sheet.  You have been warned!

Definitely - but it is certainly missing Bogart wrestling a giant python and Hepburn being carried away by gorillas

Awesome thread.  Looks like it's been a great year for many here, in terms of acquisitions.  I'm really stoked that I won some posters that I've been looking for a few years for, and some for my favorite movies.  I'm also happy to say that I passed Calculus and graduated college with 2 degrees.  8)

It's difficult for me to decide which are my favorites, and somehow I accidentally deleted most of my PhotoBucket pictures for my 2012 wins when I was resizing them, so here are my favorites of the year:

This thread is great, I've gone through it twice now - it's always cool to see what items are nearest and dearest to the heart after a year's worth of purchases.
I've one more to add, it's not a poster but hopefully you guys will appreciate it.

This is a first edition of the Godzilla novel by Shigeru Kayama (with dust jacket).
It was published by before the first movie came out in 1954 and released by Iwatani bookstore.
I have heard that the first printing was only 500 copies as they were unsure it would be a success, but this is the very first Godzilla collectible and I was very pleased to be able to get a chance to acquire a copy this year.

This thread is great, I've gone through it twice now - it's always cool to see what items are nearest and dearest to the heart after a year's worth of purchases.
I've one more to add, it's not a poster but hopefully you guys will appreciate it.

Congrats Sean! Given rarity and your fanatism on the character, I imagine this one will be well treasured.

Again, I thought I was done, but I'm not...

Here's one I've been trying to get for as long as I've been collecting, but I never liked the price, which can be quite excessive.  Finally worked out a deal with one of my providers and it is mine.

The catch...  It is linenbacked...  puke2 and I won't get it until February, since my guy is traveling the world until then.  But I paid for it today, so I'm including it to my 2012 purchases.

47x63in.

Thanks Mel.  I personally think that my Gone With the Wind 2 panels is better.  It is certainly much rarer than the Belle et la Bête (and was more expensive).  I know I will never be able to find an original GWtW again, while I will be able to find a Belle et la Bête if I pay the price.  My main thing is that I didn't want to spend $10,000 on it, and I didn't.

Well damn Shazam, the 1946 first release (left) truly is superior.  I never noticed before but the 1951 re-release (right) is completely redrawn, less colorful, and slightly less detailed, although still exceptional:

I had a couple of good ones early in the year but then I got busy with other things (like $1000 fake toys). I do have a few later purchases to photograph including some Japanese girl-gang movies and an almost complete collection of promo paper for Ingmar Berman's MONIKA THE STORY OF A BAD GIRL - maybe if I get out the camera over the holidays...

I am going to pull a Thierry and post one that I just got. Its been a unicorn to me and even more desirable ever since that damn quad auction where I only missed by $1500  :P on it and the TCAT in the middle of the night...  I also found out I had missed one on emovie? Sleeping I guess... So, I wasn't letting this one get away.  And as a PPP lieutenant, I have to arrest myself for overspending. A gift from my wife as she let me charge it to the good ol' MC (Since I am totally busted for the month and she remembers the 'waking her up in the middle of the night quad auction too').  :)

Before that, I had only seen it in a book.

Ditto. It's like it's going for a long prison sentence, never to see the light of day...  :'(  Oh well to each their own. I've got a lot of crap I've bought, stuffed in a box and never given a second glance, so it's not like we all don't do it to some extent, and some things you hold onto for investment sake.  Personally I like displaying my stuff, and buying more pricey stuff has lead to me weeding through all the stuff I've collected over the years and never paid much attention to and sell it to fund more expensive posters.  So I'm trying to start storing less and displaying more, and in the process getting rid of a bunch of crap, it's a new beginning... I hope.

You know, this is a question that keeps coming back to me every so often.  Ultimately, I don't expect anyone to understand my choices on a poster forum.  All I can say it that 1/  I don't really like posters on a wall.  I used to, but not anymore and 2/  Posters are not all I collect.  I also collect fine art, and I chose to display fine art.

I understand and I don't.
I do, because my main collection of hammer daybills I don't have a desire to display.
Same with my ted v Mikels stuff.
I collect to collect with them.
The smaller collections I'd like to display. But as is the curse of many of us, I can't afford the frames.
So what does get displayed is lobby cards and smaller items where I can buy $4 frames.
If I did want to display my hammer stuff I'd feel like I had to do every one, and that's up over 150 and I don't see that happening, too much space let alone cash.
I do like to look at them though.

I think most collectors will own more posters than they can seriously believe will be displayed at some point.

It happens a lot.  Check the difference between an original And God Created Woman for 1956 and its 1964 re-release.  Both are my pictures.

I guess for me personally if I was ever going to spend the kind of $$$ Thierry did on that poster I would sure as hell have to be certain I am going to display it!

I am not all for displaying everything - that's just illogical - but for me the joy is not usually in the possession or ownership of something.  But I am not a completist either...

Forking out thousands of $ does not correlate with being rolled up in a tube with only an image in my mind or satisfaction in knowledge of possession.

The GWtW or the B&B?  I would NEVER have purchased the GWtW - sure it's a classic but the movie & all of it's paper does nothing for me.  The B&B - I have not seen the actual movie - but the poster is damn fine (as everyone seems to agree).

If I was spending that kind of $ I'd have made preparations to frame it.  It would just be part of the package/planning.

But these are just my opinions - you can use it as a shower curtain if you want (at least you'd see it that way ;) )

Geez it's sure hard to keep up with this thread. Kudos to everyone. I'm getting more and more intrigued how Thierry gets his pieces for relative low prices. I suspect there's a secret cellar under his new bathroom with some poor dealer chained to his seat, a vice on each wrist. Now and then Thierry shouts "Thierry hates "French Grande"" at them and shatters his resistance.

I find it amazing you can locate these foreign posters (like the IALP) at small US auctions...seems counter intuitive (unless of course this listed in a French auction?)

A lot of people think it doesn't make sense or something, I dunno, as for the 9th gate, I was thinking today I would buy a BR player for that film alone. Found my one sheet today and will put it on my wall this week, that's one f the movies that squeezes into my top five. Superb.

Just in time for Christmas this one arrived! A French large one, for the Swedish film BREAKING POINT which was the follow-up to the notorious THRILLER A CRUEL PICTURE! The art is by Swedish/Swiss artist Hans Arnold. The Swedish one-sheet is even more desirable and has the same image, but has so far eluded me...

Well, looking back at 2012, while I acquired less than 100 posters I must say that almost every one of them was a hand-picked favorite.
Most importantly for me though is that I got most of them from you collectors right here at APF.  Some were gifts, some were trades and some were found by leads that you all found for me. That interaction with you people has made this my most satisfying year in movie poster collecting ever.

Matias found me this awesome VAMPIRE LOVERS one sheet from Argentina.

I really wanted this version because it included Peter Cushing as the General.
Thanks again, Matias.  You are Argentina's ambassador to the poster world.  ;D

Mike (m154cath) got me this bitchin' quad from the FIFTH ELEMENT.

Mike also sent me this UK teaser one sheet from one of my favorite Terry Gilliam films.
Check out the description for Adolphus.

Thanks Mike, and I do have some posters almost ready to ship to you.  thumbup

Schan (Kovacs) gifted me this beautiful B1 for SAMURAI RESURRECTION.  Thanks again, big guy!

Goremeister Steven swapped me this direct-to-video beauty which has eluded me for years.
As I had input into it's genesis, it meant a lot to me to get one.

(Thank you Schan for use of your photo.  thumbup)

Tob has been tracking down quads for me all year long.  Whatta guy!
Here's a few of the modern gems he has sent me.  I love 'em all. A BIG thanks Tob!

(Thanks to Mike (m154cath) for use of this photo.)

Tom (angelflyover) is one of the nicest gentlemen in the hobby and I correspond with him frequently.
Holiday pointed me in his direction for these DS teasers and although I couldn't afford them, Tom sent them along
and we ended up with a mutually satisfying trade.
When Tom says 'mint' and 'safely packaged' he means it. Thanks Tom!  thumbup

Matt (Harry Caul) got this teaser for me from another Gilliam favorite of mine.

He also has a classic, bad-girl one sheet he is holding for me.
Thanks, Doc, for all the good cheer!  cheers

Wim (Mondo Hazardo) found these two beauties, as scarce as they are cool.
He remembered that I was looking for them and kept me in mind.
My only posters from the Netherlands.  A hundred thanks, sir!

Brandon (NeoLoco) Christmas gifted this beauty to me.  Easily one of my favorites for this year or any other.
I know, I know...I just posted this a few days ago, but it is so cool I think it deserves repeat viewing.

Ves (theartofmovieposters) is easily one of the most thoughtful and generous members of this or any other hobby.
While I have few daybills, Aussie one sheets are my favorites.  I dig the uniqueness of their designs and the quality of printing.
Here are some of the many she has tracked down for me over the year.

(This CITY OF LOST CHILDREN is an American one sheet.)

and this classic daybill...

Ves even went so far as to do the Mondo-drop torture for me because she knew I was going to be out when this one hit.

How cool is that?  My first Mondo.
Thanks a gazillion for all the paper, Ves!   bed1

Then, there's Anthony (DisheveledAmethyst).  Anthony works a cinema up in Maine.
Between his studies, his woman and his job, he still finds time to keep me flush with modern beauties.
I told him we miss his posts (he's a damn fine writer) and he promises to return when time permits.

Here's just a few of the posters he has sent me this year.

So, while I was piss-poor this year and didn't think I'd be able to afford even a stinking Mexican Lobby Card, I had one of my best years collecting.
Thank you one and all!

Armin (posteroid) wrangled me this cool Japanese WOLFEN.

In addition to having made so many great friends on this forum, I would be remiss in not showing off some of the great stuff I acquired from
Bruce (Emovieposter), Rich (MoviePosterBid) and Sean and Peter (MoviePosterExchange).
These guys all share a lot in common.
Not only do they get great pieces out to us poster whores, but they are honest, fast, helpful and always ship safe and secure (and they provide great pics of the posters they auction).
They have become cornerstones in our hobby and it is always a pleasure to deal with them.
Here's some of the posters I won at auction (dirt cheap) from them this year.

Thanks Bruce for

Tom (angelflyover) is one of the nicest gentlemen in the hobby and I correspond with him frequently.
....and although I couldn't afford them, Tom sent them along and we ended up with a mutually satisfying trade.
When Tom says 'mint' and 'safely packaged' he means it. Thanks Tom!  thumbup

I agree with that completely. He really is a true gent.
I too couldn't afford those DKR teasers but AFO generously offered to trade and i still think i am in his debt.

It's a pity the posters were better than the film.

You guys are too kind.  It just looks bigger and better 'cause I posted just about everything I had.
On the other hand, I seem to remember a nice chap from across the pond (a bloke who dabbles in quads) who acquired first-release paper for REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, THE THING, THIS ISLAND EARTH, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, ETC., ETC., ETC....
Seems he had a much finer year than I.
Any one of those quads shames the sum total of my collection.

Fabulous posters Ted.  And it is certainly not a contest for anyone, but rather you buy what you want.  There will always be somewhere with a bigger better collection (Hammett), but your collection reflects your tastes, research, and time.   thumbup

That Mayhem poster has always been a favorites of Mel's, it might even have a 5 star rating.  ;D Everytime one of you blokes posts your posters, I find several that I have either never seen, have to have now, or both.

  Thanks for sharing everyone.

thanks guys

Paul, the fry up was great - should have taken a photo ! sausage, bacon, scrambled egg, bubble & squeak & black pudding all washed down with a crafty pint of ale. live the dream!

Ted - that poster took an age to get - i saw it on the web about 4 months before its release date & asked all tthe guys i use to keep an eye out for it. the film was only released for 1 day so there wernt going to be many flying around. unfortunately, some idiot decided to put 1 on ebay - sold for £80+ & all my contacts suddenly became very quiet - which was a bit like my attempts to get Bond The Untold Story Documentary quad! anyway 1 guy came thru  happy1

Gem - Brazil was a bargain - right place right time & £25 ! still not decided what to do with it . may send it for some restoration work

Stuart - african queen - again abit lucky - but there is 1 on ebay £30 i think. just need to get Lawrence of Arabia,Chinatown & Repulsion re-release quads now!

I am in the love moon zero two camp, not many of us it seems but I reckon it's a good fun film.
Just found my DVD of it a few days ago after promising to lend it to a friend for months who had never heard of it and was excited by the thought of a hammer western on the moon.

Yesterday, I decided to let this one go.  The truth is, I really don't like linenbacked posters, and it had been bothering me ever since I bought it.  When I do buy a linenbacked poster (which is very seldom) I usually console myself thinking that I won't be able to find a folded copy, so I better get what I can.  Well, in the case of B&B, I did.  A nice folded copy.  The seller hasn't agreed on selling it to me just yet (he's asking a lot more money than the linenbacked version), but I won't let him walk away until he says yes, and I think he will.

So scratch this one from my 2012 acquisitions.  My collector friend already sold it to someone else anyway.

SHOW US YOURS!!!

You know your collection is serious when all of the other collectors in your circle would agree unanimously that upon your passing, if it hits the auction block, it will be a "named collection".  If it happens, yours will surely hit the market as the "Bxxxx collection"

I don’t mind foxing that much, in fact I rather keep it if the overall health of the poster is good. There.. i said it...

No foxing, man.  One of the MANY perks of living in Southern Cal.  Very little humidity.  If I was living in, say, Florida, the story would be different, but thank GOD I am not.
