So this is for anybody who is reading this. Under EMP classification,  which is more rare Super or Ultra? I saw Bruce around, perhaps he may answer this.......or again anybody who knows for sure!  ;D

I'm pretty sure they have the same meaning.  Do you think there should there be one agreed upon adjective, such as "extremely?"

Should either term/word even be used with auction houses or dealers?

I'm thinking not.

Those are the kinds of words used by lone, *bay sellers. And they dont mean a whole lot (to me).  ;)

Brandon Jeff

I feel the way they are being used over at EMP there is a degree of rarity implied..as in Ultra Rare would be the at top, then Super Rare...and the simply Rare for example....perhaps I should just email Bruce or Phil and ask them...

This is actually very interesting. In Spanish they do have a different emphasis hence to me ultra is rarer, as it is above and beyond anything else. Super is like maximum but ultra is a step above everything else. But I think like Brandon said, in this context they do mean the same (or at least in EN). I however cannot help it and ultra reads rarer to me!

If in doubt...go for the "super ultra rare" ...yes...have seen this on ebay too!

By all means.. you should ask EMP. Only they know the descriptive, as pertains to how they are using it.  :)

But "rare" is thrown around so much on places like the bay, when it is actually far from the truth.

And if something is described as 'ultra' or 'super' rare, on any site that has a data base, search the title on that site's DB. That will help determine how rare an item might be, based on the number of copies sold prior, from that dealer/seller/auction house.

That was my only point.  :D

Jeff Rosa

Of course Jeff!! I just sent an email, I will share my findings. I also will not dispute these terms should not be used.
However as Rosa pointed out, and to my own personal thoughts, Ultra is implied IMHO as the top....

Rosa, that's good to know.  I can now see how, technically, "ultra" could imply a higher degree.

Now the big question is: what comes after "super ultra rare?"  8)

Jeff, that is a good point about how the term is used untruthfully on eBay.  It's kinda like the ol' "a long time can go by without one of these coming up for sale" and there are like dozens others currently listed.

"Ultra" and other such terms, imply a greater and/or so called, "uber" rarity, of some sort (imho).

I guess the question is...

Is it a true descriptive, especially when used by dealers or auction houses?

I dont know.  dontknow.gif

On ebay... its a toss.. used every day.  :P

Maybe there should be a agreed upon classification.

In comic collecting the Overstreet Comic Price Guide describes it as:

VERY RARE: 1-10 copies exist
RARE: 11-20 copies exist
SCARCE: 21-100 copies exist

But how does anyone know the number of extant copies of any poster, For Sure?

No one does, with certainty.

Very true, in fact I saw a Spectre advance on ebay a week or so ago described as rare...quite a bold statement lie.

It's all relative.
Some poster could be considered mega rare today, and tomorrow not so much - when someone discover another 20 copies in some old basement.

On the "rareness" of items, I ALWAYS simply go on the number of past examples of that exact item we have ever auctioned in the past.

This is slightly complicated by the fact that after so many years (25), we now regularly get the exact same examples back a second time. And of course, sometimes they have been restored since we first had them.

But there is an added rareness factor. There are some titles where NO movie paper of any size shows up, and others where only a single poster of a different size has shown up, and others where only a lobby card or two has shown up, and others where only a still or two has shown up. I see these factors as adding to the "rareness" of items.

I feel such qualities are worth pointing out. If you disagree, ignore it. I DON'T refer to how many are "known to exist" because there are likely thousands of collections I have never seen, so how could I know that? And I don't look at other online databases when discussing rarity, because many contain the same item that was "auctioned" again and again and I don't want to try to determine which are the same.

There are specific posters where only one has been previously auctioned by us, others where only two or three have been previously auctioned by us, and so forth. I include this information when it seems worth pointing on. I usually DON'T include it on items like silent lobby cards, because those are generally so rare that in almost all cases they have never been previously auctioned by us, so why point it out every time.

An interesting case is the collection of 23 silk banners that were just discovered and consigned to us. That is double the amount we auctioned in all our previous 25 years of auctioning, and I thought that fact well worth mentioning on each auction, because the chances of any of these coming to auction again is extremely tiny.
We (eMoviePoster.com) hold 2,500 to 4,000 auctions every four weeks.
We have auctioned more movie paper for more money (in real sales) than any auction in the world.
We have the longest continuously running auctions of any auction, with over 1,914,280 to date from over 3,192 consignors.
See all of our current auctions in one gallery here: http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/all.html

Welcome back Bruce.

You folks have to much time on your hands if you worry about the definition of rare!

Was also fun to see the assortment of Tom & Jerry OS today, on EMP. The early cartoons (from the '40s), done by MGM for use in theaters, were terrific, with top notch animation.

I won an Alice in Wonderland LC, but paid dearly for it.  I usually hate it when folks split up lobby card sets, but I doubt the set would have fetched the $807 achieved by selling them individually.
