That was a great result!!  More proof that quality paper from the "golden age" of 1930's titles is performing well...I love the font treatment....the fading color of the title and the tweak on the word "THIN"...the stars in the O's...little accents that enrichen the poster...

if you just look at the small percentage of material that gets a good result, you would think it all sells incredible,
once yu get past that few items, you find that - in auction - 1-2% sells better than normal, about 20% sells for fair value, 50% sells for well below expected vale and the remainder sells for dirt.
this goes for all auctions.

and Tait, "little accents that enrichen the poster."

in your case, the word to use is 'enrich'
the other form of the word is 'richen'

that's the English lesson for today ;-)

This is where my collecting knowledge ends.  I don't understand any of this.

Short version: They were an art group (based out of Las Vegas?) that restored an old litho press and made new prints of classic posters. They completely recreated the artwork for each poster, out of necessity due to the process I think.  Some of the coolest posters in my opinion are titles like Creature from the Black Lagoon and Attack of the 50 foot Woman – – they were originally printed in offset, but S2 redid them as stone lithos.  Anyway, I believe they are now defunct and there are still a few galleries selling off their old stock. There are quite a few posters left and in some cases (King Kong 3-sheet) Gallery prices are considerably less then what day auction for at emovie!

They aren't actually repros; the art was completely re-drawn by the various artists (and new plates created), but based on the original artwork. All have slight variations which can be seen, especially when placed side by side with either an original (or a reproduction of an original piece).

They were discussed here a bit, too.

Thanks all for the information.

Sounds kind of like what Mondo are doing now, which also sell for fairly high prices.

I can understand them being valuable and collectible, but the prices are quite amazing, do people know they're not studio issued originals?

Yes, buyers should know.

The S2s were never advertised or meant to deceive anyone. They were created on 100+ yr old litho presses brought from France and the higher end versions printed on high quality paper. And because the art was completely redrawn, with new plates created, they were done with quality and pride.

Even back when being sold and available from Jacks Gallery online, the prices for the 3sh were quite high. As were the "plus" versions of the standard size OS that they did.

not sure what stupid people have on the King Kong.. you can buy them for 1200 from the company that bought out S2 Art and you can find for $900 at some other galleries

I have both Kong & Metropolis and didn't pay $200

They aren't actually repros.

Hmm, if they aren't originals, they are repros, Jeff.  You can twist it as much as you want, they are repros.

no, they are not repros.

a repro is directly copying the original to produce the result

S2/AFI posters are completely redrawn images, making them a new product.

They are nothing but disgustingly opportunistic forgeries / fakes
