She July 12, 1935
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:38:03 AM »
She was released 83 years ago today, on July 12, 1935.  Very little large size paper has shown up over the years for this film. The movie is based on H. Rider Haggard's story She: A History of Adventure that began as a magazine serial in October 1886. Haggard is considered the Grand Daddy of the Lost Race/World stories that became popular at the turn of the last century.  This half sheet is hanging in our living room, and whispers on dark, moonless nights, "She-who-must-be-obeyed; She-who-must-be-obeyed..."

Beautiful, Okie. I love the combo of created art of Gahagen along with the photos of Randolph Scott, Nigel Bruce and Mack.

Have you owned this particular copy since the last time it came up for auction?

Hi Jeff, Yes, I believe I have, if you don't count my issues with object permanence!  Okie

Nice HS, Okie!  Even though it's not all that great, I have a soft spot for that movie, mostly because the great 1930s matte paintings and sets.

And what a great way to footnote and show your HS, too, Okie. On the 83rd anniversary of its first release. Love that kind of trivia, too. clap clap

Thanks, Monster! Yeah, that next hurricane will come someday.  I'll tie kite tails on some posters and maybe they'll make it to safety?!    Okie

Thanks, Antoine!  I enjoyed the movie a lot when I was a kid and saw it late at night in a comic convention 24 hour movie room.  I believe it was a 16 mm dupe made from the copy Buster Keaton had.  Those were the days, eh?  You are right about the sets etc.  What an investment!  Also, the movie was supposed to be in color which should have showcased all that beautiful set, colorful costumes, and painted backdrops.  Color would have fully realized Cooper's vision, and I think would have made She a 1930s blockbuster.   Okie

Hey Okie, I would say that your HS could qualify as a potential Unicorn,  notworthy.gif  considering that this one copy has appeared for auction only 2x, once back in 2003 and then re-appearing again, twelve years later, in 2015.

Hi Jeff, Interestingly, I've thought about drawing a unicorn horn right on top of Nigel Bruce's head!  What have we got here, my dear Watson?!   Okie

It's elementary my dear, Jeffson: something for Holmes to hang his deerstalker upon.

I agree, an almost glowing color palette was used on the She paper.  Okie
