Title: April 2015
Post by: paul waines on April 02, 2015, 01:48:15 PM
I though someone would have posted by now....

Any way, no old ones this month yet, but some new ones...

Good start, PW.  Those one sheets for Cinderella are nice, Run All Night is a great flick, and Poltergeist looks cool.

New arrivals from eMovie.  As always, excellent packaging, grading, service, etc. from the eMovieposter team.

I'm really stoked about this one.  It's the only one in this format for Scarface that I've seen, and it's in darn good condition.

Looking at your recent acquisitions on your website, there are some other nice ones, including this international one sheet:

Thanks buddy.  Yeah, it's been a pretty good month in terms of variety, which I love.

I know it seems like a lot, but these are my favorite purchases over the course of an entire month.  Don't go thinking that it is a day purchase ;)

T

PS: I'm not showing anything from the past 30 years because it would be too much stuff.  I don't even list any of that stuff in my new acquisitions.  Scarlett was different because she's hot.

Yeah, but they look so much better.  Not in the same league, imo.  At least I recognize the main players.

And that's what it's all about.  We collect what we can afford and what we like.  I like my stuff but I don't expect anyone else to like it.  In fact, the least people like it, the more I can collect, so it actually works in my favor.  I didn't post my new acquisitions for the longest time because I knew most people wouldn't give a rat's ass about it.  And then I realized that in order to know what you like, you need to see what you don't like, so I started posting.

I love his movies, but he is extremely political, not for everyone.  L'Aveu is great.  Z is a masterpiece.  Missing (which won the Palme D'Or) is amazing, if only for Lemmon and Spacek.  I love his later movies too, like Betrayed and Music Box.  But like I said, he, along with Yves Montand and wife Simone Signoret, were active members of the French communist party for years and it shows.

Missing is a very simple movie by today's standards, but it has moments of raw intensity so uniquely Costa Gavras.

I won this in a Dublin auction having lost out on a 12 Angry Men quad. This Psycho quad seems to be known as Style B although that seems to be a misnomer given this was surely the very first poster to be used in the initial teaser campaign in major cities. This is also a first printing as the printer's details - W E Berry of Bradford - are shown. The poster was subsequently reprinted later in the campaign and those examples do not have printer credits.

For those of you who like the modern stuff (yes, I know you're out there...)  Just got these 7 Avengers wilding posters.  I don't have time to photograph them right now, so I took this picture close to my house.  I'll photograph them soon.

And no, I am not selling any.  Sorry, but I got 12 messages the last time I posted The Hobbit wildings.

Great set of wildings.  Seems like it would be a pretty darn rare opportunity to acquire any of those, let alone a set, eh?  Are they about the size of bus shelters?

The Black Widow statue is rad.

I like it.  I saw it at a store a few months ago and I had to get it.  Nothing better than a chick with a big gun ;)

And yeah, all bus stop size, but single sided.  You won't see them on Ebay, that's for sure, but the bus stops will be easy to get.

I was fortunate to pick up a few B1s at eMovie tonight.

From Mr. David Fincher's excellent The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx303/NeoLoco80/Posters/girlwdragon_zpswg4syuby.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/NeoLoco80/media/Posters/girlwdragon_zpswg4syuby.jpg.html)

This one featuring Ms. Astrid Berges-Foley is a really nice mermaid design, IMO.  It shows the softer side of the mermaid, in stark contrast to the weathered sailor, etc.

Lord of War featuring Mr. Nicholas Cage.  It's an interesting movie, and this is a striking image.

So you're the one who stole my mermaid poster!  Jerk!  I'm glad you got it, though...  I realized after the auction that I owned the bus stop of the same design.  I would have loved to own it but it made the pill easier to swallow ;)  The girl is hot, whoever she is.

Funny how life goes, as you were the one who outbid...errrr...out-sniped me on that bus shelter a few years ago.  :P  That one, as well as this B1, are the only ones that I've seen.  The Japanese versions for the film aren't even listed on movie poster database or similar sites.

Anyway, thanks, I'm stoked that I won it.

Ms. Astrid Berges-Foley is one of the best in the biz.  She's excellent in I Origins (2014), etc.

Picked up a Tobacco Road r62 Locandina last night from Emovie last night. Not the best condition but for little money and it'll go well with the Gene Tierney collection.

Nice pick up Mark, I was going to bid on that one myself, but someone bid me up too far on another...

Did you go, or just interweb bid, as I'm still waiting for my wins to turn up. What others did you have a go at?

Thanks all for the positive comments on the Psycho quad. No Paul, I didn't go but they shipped the poster to me the day after I made payment. I also won the Evil Dead quad thinking it was a rare style without the "Now On Video" wording but on closer inspection of the image I saw it had been blacked out with marker pen. That wasn't disclosed in the description so the auctioneer agreed to cancel my purchase without any fuss.

What one(s) did you get? I hope it wasn't 12 Angry Men!

No, I know it's one you need, 12 Angry Men.  Their descriptions are very vague at best, I have to zoom right in on my computer to get a good look.
I won the Murder most Foul Quad, any Rutherford Marple's are none existent on a Quad, it's the first of the series I've managed to get; And I've only ever seen one other, and was well out bid on it.  Also picked up the Blood of the Vampire as that was far too cheap, and was run up on the Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy.  I'll post them when they get here.

I was fortunate to pick up a few B1s at eMovie tonight.

From Mr. David Fincher's excellent The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx303/NeoLoco80/Posters/girlwdragon_zpswg4syuby.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/NeoLoco80/media/Posters/girlwdragon_zpswg4syuby.jpg.html)

This one featuring Ms. Astrid Berges-Foley is a really nice mermaid design, IMO.  It shows the softer side of the mermaid, in stark contrast to the weathered sailor, etc.

Lord of War featuring Mr. Nicholas Cage.  It's an interesting movie, and this is a striking image.

Yes, it is in a one sheet frame. Just flattening it, waiting on a frame to arrive. It is almost flawless!
I am considering pairing it with either the 1S from the sequel, or the re-release 1S same image but with Stripe in the box.
Leaning towards the re-release with Stripe, any thoughts?

Matt what is the second one there with the barbed wire?

Ostatni Etap, one of the earliest films about the holocaust -- written and directed by a survivor of the camps and filmed on location at Auschwitz only 2 years after it was liberated.  Many of the actors were formerly interred there. The film remains one of the best first-hand sources for what the original camp looked like as it was demolished shortly after filming.  Not until ur ars later was it reconstructed as a memorial site.

The original '47 polish poster for this film is almost non-existent, but the '58 re-release used the same art. I already have one of those. This Italian is the only large poster I've ever come across -- and those blues eyes sucked me in. What an intense poster -- I had to get it.  In fact I won that poster and the Wild Bunch for less than my Max bid on just the Ostatni Etap. That's how committed I was!  I didn't think it would go that high, but I was prepared if necessary.

I'm pretty stoked about this one that just arrived.  Video poster for Motorama (1991).

It's a fairly obscure movie, but it's a trip. wynk  I agree with the first paragraph of this review (http://www.slightly-deranged.com/?page_id=1417):

Motorama is one of those movies that got lost amidst the tides of time. Many films pass unnoticed upon first release and remain so for many years, but they’re eventually rediscovered, at least to some extent. Others, however, seem like they’re destined to oblivion like Motorama. It’s like a curse or something. You know this is particularly true when its Wikipedia article is a stub. Very few people know about it, yet those who did watch the movie will be hardly able to erase it from their memories and still discuss it to this day. I saw it as a youngster myself and it has stuck with me ever since.

Do you own this poster? It is really quite something. Thanks for sharing this info. We went to the premier with  Q&A at the BFI in London of the restored 1945 documentary  German Concentration Camps Factual Survey -That was hard to watch and I am still recovering from it. I cannot imagine- I do not want to imagine- what these people went through. Will check that film..though I need to recover first..

I really think that poster is very moving, thanks again for sharing :)

I started collecting posters around 25 years ago with one of my favorite films, Star Wars getting my first one as part of a comic book collection I bought. One of the earlier buys after that and the one that made me fall in love with big paper of all sizes was the Star Wars three sheet. I was so impressed with it that I decided that I wanted to have a set of all three back then to one day display side by side. A short time later I heard that they never made a Jedi three sheet and my hopes died there. A few years later I found out while researching Star Wars posters that there actually was one made but they were one of the rarest of all the Star Wars posters for any size. This turned out to be true as I only know of a handful, in single digits, of copies that survive and even less that the owners have parted with. I searched and searched and could not find one for sale. When they did come up for sale I was always the brides maid and never the bride almost always being the under bidder to someone with deeper pockets, a day too late to hear about it or as in the case of the one and only time Ha sold one, it went for peanuts for some reason, it was one of the only HA auctions that I missed in years.

Well the hunt is over as of today a copy has arrived and is the completion a search that has spanned decades, countries and continents. Finally I now I have a reason to frame them up. Since this search is over, guess I will go back to the hunt for a set of 24 sheets.  ;D

Congrats, Mike. This is what collecting, searching a researching is all about.   clap clap clap

Good things come to those who wait, and have the patience to follow it thru. It looks to be in fantastic shape, too, and all the better.

With the set complete, I think the 24sh hunt is a great next goal! (lol)

Well done, Mike, well done!!

 :D

Question: why would this particular style, have been printed in so fewer numbers? It certainly is as eye catching as the other 2- so why not have it available to theaters (if wanted) in the same kinds of numbers printed as the others?

Thanks guys, really happy with it although I feel a little like Inigo Montoya, what to do now.

By '83 the three sheet was very rarely used to advertise movies in comparison to earlier years and and had been in steady decline since the late 60's or so. In the case of the Jedi poster it was designed in conjunction with all of the other size posters with scale proofs, etc. for NSS printing but it and the six sheet like other odd ball sizes seven sheets for example were not produced by them and instead were printed by a secondary source and distributed from there. Since there was little market for it and the fact that it could not be ordered in the normal fashion it was not ordered as much. There are a number of poster from the mid 70's on that are incredibly rare or mere rumors because they were printed this way and in such small quantities like the fabled US Jaws three sheet. Thought I found one of those last year but it was not to be.

Agreed, well done Mike. I know how you must have felt when you learnt about that Heritage sale. I hope you've got a wall in your home large enough to display your trilogy.

I have been collecting for around 6 months now, but I already understand how happy you must be to complete your Star Wars 3s collection. One of the King Kong posters I fell in Love with sold on emovie about 2 weeks before I joined the site. Now I search for it regularly, patiently waiting for it to reemerge! I wonder where the hobby will be 25 years from now. I just hope it doesn't all turn digital, for this would be a tragedy IMHO. Congratulations on your set, now hurry go frame it so we can be jealous!!!!!!

I was about to write up the pros/cons about reconstructing the missing border -- but after looking them up online I realized these are almost intact jumbo lobbies!  Just an 1" missing from the tops and bottoms with the sides fully intact.  I had no idea these were full bleed.  Well done again on this pic up!

You know, I have that funky trimmed Belgian Casablanca with a map on the back.  One of my ideas for framing it up would have been to be print out an exact size copy of the poster and then cut out a hole in the exact shape of the original poster that remained.  I would leave about a 1/16" gap all the way around so it would be clear where the original ended and the print out began.  I was then going to sandwich between to pieces of plexi so the you could always flip it to see the map.  You could try something similar and print out the missing 1" strips at the top/bottom -- you could use the high res complete examples from HA's archive.  I think they've sold both cards intact before.  The hard part would be color matching them...

I'm pretty stoked about this one that just arrived.  Video poster for Motorama (1991).

(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx303/NeoLoco80/DSC01134_zps77i9brhi.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/NeoLoco80/media/DSC01134_zps77i9brhi.jpg.html)

I will try and check this flicker out, Brandon. I wasnt even familiar with the title until you posted. It has piqued my interest. And congrats on the pickup, too.  cool1

Also to Undead

Danish King Kong (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/2021376.html) Somebody on this forum knows the winner of this one.
It sold on cinemasterpiece who knows how long ago also. I am sure I will find it again sometime, just a matter of when.

As for recent acquisitions I am waiting on the delivery today for the KING KONG linen Argentinean R50s, the poster in my profile now.
I love the color palette and the way some of the early Kong art was reused.

Matt, many thanks for this very helpful post. You just read my mind,  it was my original idea to restore them, but it looks like they are almost complete so I am not so minded now - other APFrs here have also told me to keep my  ''hands off'' hehe  :P   i want something a bit different, along what you have suggested.

I remember your beautiful Casablanca, and your idea sounds just like the way forward to me - have you done it? Is it framed up on the wall? I would loooove to see it!

I'm slow like the turtle Rosa... you should know that by now :)  No, not done yet.  I have all sorts of grand plans that often get pushed to the wayside in favor of even grander ones!  I do have the double sided frame -- I just need to print out a full size replica to make my border with.  I don't have an open space on the wall yet, which definitely has contributed to my delay.

uhm... ehm... I have the wall space .. you know, I mean..uhm  I could have it framed and hanged on my walls , just as a favour, hehe.. deal?  :P

Jokes aside. Do please share it once framed. I would love to see it. I am sure all of us would like to see it! Thanks again Matt  :)

What do you mean by "error-filled"?

I guess Chris says that the value was demented. Or that they didn't identify it as a rerelease.
And as we're speaking of argentinean King Kongs, you know there's a rule right?
Every argentinean Kong must be sent to an agent in its country of origin (that would be me  ;) ) for close inspection.
Have in mind that customs people are strict down here, and the poster might not get authorized to leave the country after revision...  ;D

This was initially listed in an ebay auction with a starting price of $50 - I had to act fast!

US One sheet 27 x 41 (Rare Style)

One from the Heart took over a year to reach the UK, opening in July 1983. The Lumiere was a West End art house cinema sadly now gone and it seems it was the first to screen the film for a limited run. I just love this image particularly in landscape format. I must have spent 8 -10 years waiting for one to show up on ebay - I finally decided to negotiate with a dealer for the only poster I have ever seen for sale.

If you look closely can you see half-tone dots in the colored sections?  Or are they more or less solid?

The fact the colours are solid says to me it's a Screen print, you wouldn't see any dots as such.

The fact the colours are solid says to me it's a Screen print, you wouldn't see any dots as such.

A quick point -- that is probably true in this case, but not necessarily always true.  I have a friend who is a print artist and to do photo-realistic, CMYK prints you definitely need defined half tone dots in each color.  That said, the dots tend to be much larger than those from the offset process and the registration (which is done by hand on each piece) often does line up as well.  Now, if you aren't looking for a photo-realistic result, instead of burning photo-based images into your screen/emulsion (resulting in half tone dots) you can instead burn more crude, stencil like shapes into your screen.  In those cases the ink is applied much thicker and you can more or less eliminate the screen/dot pattern all together.
Title: Re: April 2015
Post by: paul waines on April 27, 2015, 03:51:13 PM
That's right Matt, It does all depend on the screen, and ink used, for multiple use' as in film posters, they would always tend to go for the cheaper option, which usually looks like a solid block of ink rather than dots..

I was actually researching that one last night, as that's when I saw it at Bruce's.
I believe its a mexican one sheet Matt.
"Lito-Impresora Panama" is the printing company and Panama 237 (not sure about the number, can't see it well in the pic from emovie) is the address.
The printing company was in Mexico D.F. (the capital).
The library of Mexico has several books that were printed there, as this one:

http://catbiblio.uv.mx/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=59013&shelfbrowse_itemnumber=206273 (http://catbiblio.uv.mx/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=59013&shelfbrowse_itemnumber=206273)

I have seen some sites with books from the same printing company, mistakenly listing them as being printed in Panama.

Will dig a bit more to see if I can tell you more.

Watch your tongue Chris!

Thanks Matias!  I appreciate knowing more about the origin, but it won't affect my love of this poster either way.  I think the "¡ FUGITIVOS ! Buscados por: Asalto a Trenes y Robo a Bancos" line in Spanish makes the poster considering the groups history and ultimate undoing.
