Title: February 2016
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on February 02, 2016, 06:56:50 PM
I'm NOT really here...  I just noticed I'm still getting notifications for January and, hello? It's February. Carry on...

A Swedish OS for the film, Tangier ( Universal 1946).

From what I read, this movie was one of the last films that Universal produced, before it merged and became Universal-International in July 1946.

There is also an ink stamp on the lower right corner (the same is also on the back). It indicates that this film was played in central (Centrum) Åseda, a small town and the county seat of Kronoberg County, in southern Sweden. I'm not sure what the rest of the info means or indicates, at this point.

Very nice poster indeed! I suppose I should try to get a few Swedish posters to honor my heritage one of these days.

Thanks, Steve and e.

This was one of those posters that I think is a bit better than the US OS. (I dont recall if there is an APF thread on this topic or not).

On the US OS, Montez's posture looks a bit stiff and the floating heads (as were done in that era) around her, are, well.. just... floating....   ;)

I got this new to me Outsiders one from Australia but think it is a Lobby card one sheet? There are no perforations though(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/StarryKat/outsidersposter.jpg)...

Yeah, that style of lobby 'card' poster thing didn't come with any perforations.

Think they were a style that only lasted a handful of years in the early 80's.  I have one for Never Say Never Again, a film for which actually, he should have said Never Again, and meant it.

Nice photosheet there, Starrykat.  I need to find myself one.

I may have a spare in a file, I will have to check as I know I have a few doubles of Australian items. Would be happy to swap it for either one of the Japanese YA ones you have ;)

Thank you, Mirosae, I was surprised when I opened it too, it took so long to arrive that I forgot I had ordered it!

I seem to recall that the Japanese poster for the Big Sleep  had the artwork similar to the Italian with her wearing the dress. i dont like that style ...but this is very nice indeed. I think most of the 50s Japanese posters are really exquisite.

Got it like this Jeff, and as I've only ever seen two, I was having it...

It's had some minor touch ups to the folds, otherwise it was in jollygood nick.  A Canadian restorer did the work. I forget the name at the moment, have it wrote down somewhere...

MX OS for Los Hijos Ajenos (1959)  (I believe the translation is:  The Children of Foreigners)

The tears on Gracia's cheeks almost look 3D to me, as well as the overall detail in her face.

Thank you, Thank you! I was first drawn to it because of the colors. Then after talking with a couple fellow collectors I really wanted it. Ed Shannon has the Marler Haley style Quad, which I am fairly certain this DC would have been displayed with. There should be 3 more of these Double Crowns also. So I suppose I could say 1 down..........

Sorry folks it was meant to mock the ongoing discussion T and Bruce were having here...

Specifically:
Look, I do buy those super cheap posters, so I'm happy you're selling them.  I bought a few tonite, but only the Very Good condition ones.  When you know a Good Fifty Shades of Grey is obviously not going to sell, why even bother?  It's just dead weight.

So that's where MY Halloween poster went...   thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif  I was jogging when I bid on it, and it really pissed me off because it made me stop a bunch of times.  I couldn't see my phone because I had so much sweat in my eyes, and I kept getting emails that I had been overbid.  Then I just turned it off and kept going.  Glad it went to someone on the forum.

Me loves the Pink Panther, nice pickup! The Halloween pieces are both awesome, jealous, need to find one.

February has been turning out to be a busy month poster wise and am posting a few. The lat one is a doozy and needs some discussion over in the Star Wars thread.

First up, Yes Edge I decided to buy one anyway... Toy Story/Toy Story 2 Lenticular.

Another of my favorites that I have been wanting for a very long time, Harry Potter Lenticular.

A couple of upgrades, a pair of Jedi Yamakatsu posters.

Last and definitely most... I have no idea what it really is as I have never, yes me, have never seen one before. It looks to be an English 24 sheet, would be a half billboard or 12 sheet in the US, for Return of the Jedi. It is printed in three sheets and measures roughly 112" x 60" that's 284cm x 152cm for you metric folks. If anyone knows more about this I really really would love to hear about it, please post on it in the Star Wars thread where I will be putting it and a few more images shortly.

And the "Starfalls" seem to be appearing a bit more frequently. Maybe a good sign for those that are hoping to add one to their own collections. (that there are more out there, than first thought?)

That large piece is killer.

Congrats again, on snagging it  thumbsup.gif

You're right, there seems to be quite a few of them lately.  Maybe it's not as rare as people initially thought and prices are going to drop.

Another of my favorites that I have been wanting for a very long time, Harry Potter Lenticular.

Is this the one sheet size or the smaller one? Saw one back in Nov but missed out on it.

I think there are actually three but I may be wrong. This one is the mid size standee version. I saw the one sheet after it closed as well. Would have been great to get that one.

You are too much!!!! Thank you Rosa.....

Well done getting the Halloween DC Chris, difficult to get hold of any of those..

Managed to pick this up today, and now have a Quad for every Panther film.
Thank you Paul, I might be dreaming, but a set of these would be a collection all on their own!
BTW, I like the Panther....CONGRATS

So that's where MY Halloween poster went...   thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif  I was jogging when I bid on it, and it really pissed me off because it made me stop a bunch of times.  I couldn't see my phone because I had so much sweat in my eyes, and I kept getting emails that I had been overbid.  Then I just turned it off and kept going.  Glad it went to someone on the forum.

T
Thank you T. I promise I will take good care of "YOUR" Halloween DC!!!!  ;D  One of my favorite Horror posters to date!

Yeah, it's an interesting capture, although I don't remember the scene from the film.

Anyway, congrats, RD.

It seems that there are not too many of those around.  I did a little research on that re-release, and mentioned it in another thread.

Brandon, I did a little looking around and found this screen grab, from the film, of the poor, little upended guy. It looks to be in the same part of the film when the group picks up "the hitchhiker" in their van.  >:D

What's also cool is that the 40th Anniv. poster was also done by Jason Edmiston, but in a different color palette. They look almost identical but the shape and end of the armadillo's tail is slightly different on the 40th OS, as well as where it ends in comparison to the small shrub right above it.

They zoomed in a bit and had to make it fit.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! (Well, as I write this, there are less than 3 hours of it left on the West Coast...most of the world is already living in tomorrow.) It's time for my monthly visit ( a day early...to share the love of Valentine's Day). Oh my stars!  What nice things you've all picked up this month! Wowzer-ama!

Hey there,
This is my first post outside of the 'Hello' section... great to find a place with such an active community for one of my passions.

I picked this up last week... took a bit of a stab on it, because it is a bit of an unknown. It's the Belgian poster release for Rosemary's Baby, though this particular print has a brighter/alternate image than all of the others of the same issue I could track down. EMP lists it as a possible proof. If anybody has any input or information, it'd be much appreciated!

On the left is the poster I purchased, on the right is what all other examples of this poster resemble.

Your first example looks faded out a bit.

The color of Farrow's hair and skin tone all look to have gone to a light shade of green.

Thanks! One of my favorite horror films from that period.

Fading was one of my first thoughts as well, but the amount of fading that would be needed to make the primary image that light would make the blue lettering at the bottom all but invisible, but compared side to side it looks almost identical as the other.
Title: Re: February 2016
Post by: erik1925 on February 15, 2016, 05:14:02 PM
I see what you mean.. even the title text color of the lighter one (your copy) looks to have been done in a green ink, vs. the black on the other.

Very cool, when these types of unknown posters appear now and then.

And unlike the "final" Belgians with full color, this particular copy is also missing the printer's info on the lower, right border.
Title: Re: February 2016
Post by: Chris9000 on February 15, 2016, 06:28:38 PM

Good call on both observations...

I'm not very well schooled on proofs, is it a possibility that that the printers info. was left off until the final run? Or do most feature printing info. from the get-go?
Title: Re: February 2016
Post by: erik1925 on February 15, 2016, 06:40:40 PM
In EMP's description, they also say that it appears to be a proof. They go on and add:

"We know nothing more about the poster, but it is certainly interesting and different! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here."

Just a thought: Maybe it was a copy that was taken off the line, by a print worker, prior to the last pass of inks, (and the printer's info was likely printed in black) because that person liked the way it looked in those more eerie, light green tones? (Similar to how some posters from the '30s thru the '70s, for example, have shown up, never folded, because someone snagged them before they reached the folding part of the line).

Just a guess, but in any case, it gives it a very different, overall feel.  thumbup

MX OS for Los Hijos Ajenos (1959)  (I believe the translation is:  The Children of Foreigners)

The tears on Gracia's cheeks almost look 3D to me, as well as the overall detail in her face.

Art by Armando Martinez Cacho

Last night, I was getting ready to throw away/recycle the packaging that this poster came in, and found this inside. The seller must have included it with the poster but i wasn't aware of it. It's a b/w advert of some kind for the same film. It measures 9x11 inches and is printed with black ink. The paper is heavier than newsprint and there is nothing printed on the back.

Also, written in red pen, on the upper, right corner is "Wellington" as well as "Ritz Wellington" in light pencil. In looking up that name, I did find a reference for a Ritz Theater located in Wellington, TX (http://www.wellingtonritztheatre.com/blog/about-the-ritz/), so maybe it was shown here.

Sorry all for the late reply. I was in Vegas on a short vacation. Was going to stop in and see Rich but I think he was out of town. Thank you all for the compliments on the TCM 40th poster. Thank you Brandon for the info on it. Good to know that there were not many made. I really like the artwork on it. The screen print is cool as well but I like a bigger image. Jason and I were talking about it last week after I won it and he shared the print link with me as well. I said the same thing though to bad the screen print isn't bigger.
I am fond of the artwork on this piece.

I was pleased to win this poster at Ewbanks - discussed earlier on another thread - for less than I thought I would have to pay. I am not sure I agree with Thierry that the reason for the low price was because the poster is "crap" - I think it had more to do with the timezone (the lot sold 1230h GMT) and that it was not in a high-profile sale. Actually, I think the design is original, interesting and effective. It must have been a serious contender to have been printed up as a one sheet poster (presumably for international distribution) but was ultimately trumped by the Struzan design.

This rolled quad (art by Gerald Scarfe) came from the same consignor - very hard to find in this condition.

Well, retrospectively, maybe I should have shut my big mouth, since I have been told it is taboo to criticize one's purchase.  So sorry about that.  Different strokes for different people.  I'm sure 90% of my collection is crap to you, Mark, as it should be.  It's mine and I don't expect anyone else to like it.

I still disagree with you on two fronts.  1) this sale was advertised like crazy.  I had 2 print guys who are not on this forum tell me about this BttF.  Never happened before.  2) I own about 100 mock-ups from the 80s on that I got directly from two studios, and a good half are printed 27x41in.  Most of them are terrible.  I need to get rid of them, but I cannot sell them or give them away.  I can only throw them away, which I may do when I move.

You didn't criticise my purchase Thierry, you gave your thoughts on a poster sold at Ewbanks without knowing who bought it. I know there is an etiquette on here to say only positive things about people's purchases but it is good to hear contrary thoughts as well. The only thing that annoys me is if someone is constantly negative or critical in their postings and there is no one like that on this forum. No, your collection is (more than) great but navigating your website has room for improvement!

First of all, great pick-ups Mark, I keep toying with getting that Nosferatu myself..   And if I'd of had some spare funds, I'd have had a go at the BTTF also..

The White boarder at the top of the The Wall Quad was for "over-printing" the location and dates as you say, but they wouldn't add a snipe, just printed directly on the the White area, which was done "locally" to the Cinema showing the film.

And not forgetting Rich... ;)  Excellent stuff Rich, would love any of those. If you get board of them, you know where I am... :)

The freedom of speech is a good approach, but it's not without its faults.  One of the main downsides is having to deal with the few, ultra-negative dingleberries, who think their opinions are "holier than thou", and launch all kinds of attacks, while in their (perceived) security, on the internet.  I also welcome critical commentary, and fortunately, most people here are mature and intelligent enough to handle the free speech here.

I could make a list of the people, but that would be a waste of time, as everyone knows who they are.  A lot in life is crappy, but sometimes it's best for people to take a stand against BS.  I was simply chiming in, which I don't see as a problem.

For the record, I think Thierry's comment that ML was referring to is "OK."

That's not the most sound reasoning.

Just to clarify, I should have said less than a handful of people who acted ultra-negatively, and launched personal attacks (on numerous occasions).  It's not that big of a deal, and it's not to say they're "bad people" or whatever.  I just disagree with their ways in the past, as I'm sure they already know.

Funny, but not far fetched.  If we were going to criticize posters we don't like, albeit in a nice and respectful way, I suspect many people would stop posting their gear by fear of being turned down.

I always thought that the purpose of a forum was to say what you thought, good or bad, about whatever said forum was about.  Basically an exchange of thoughts and information.  But I learned that a lot of collectors feel that criticizing their purchase is like criticizing their weight or physical appearance.  It becomes a personal thing to many and many get offended.  So poster collecting has turned into a love fest, everything is amazing, everything is wow and bravo.  It's actually interesting how prints can be criticized, because they're not posters, but posters cannot be touched.

Some people just like everything, I just say what I like and keep my mouth shut if I don't care for it.

That's the most polite thing to do, although it can be a little boring.  Going to the other extreme is a little tiresome, though, such as the 3 folks I mentioned above who regularly acted like DBs IMO, two of whom aren't here anymore, and one who went on a few personal insult rampages against me, and primarily used this place as their vomit blog,.  Of course, everyone can be a DB sometimes.  :P

First purchase off the bay in ages, but it was a must.  I had the 8mm film as a kid, it was about the 3rd or 4th film we got, so watched it many times, usually mocking the Awesome (not-so)special effects...  No wonder the poster is so scarce on a Quad.

Tho not creepy like bigmike's previous entry, I had this arrive today:

A Swedish OS for the film noir, Whiplash (Warner Bros. 1948). I saw this movie for the first time on cable, over the holidays, while visiting my family.

I like the actor credits font style on the poster. It feels very art deco. And the drawn art (aside from the b/w photo in the upper right) is always a thumbs up for me.

On the back of this poster, written in red pencil, is the name, Vadstena. It turns out this is the name of a small town in the south of Sweden.

Nice Swedish poster there, Jeff.  Several cool aspects of it, as you mentioned.  I also like the bold, red, white, and blue theme.

Just picked up this one, from the local theater.  I saw it in the lightbox, right after seeing the movie a few weeks ago, and it's stunning, IMO.

I asked the manager about it, and she checked to see if there were any others in their storage room, and discovered that the one on display is the only one they received.  I gave her my phone number, and she said she'd call me when they stopped screening the movie there, and then I could pick it up, which was mighty kind of her, of course.  True to her word, I got the call today, and picked it up when I went to see another movie there tonight.  The whole interacting with folks in real life is a nice change.

Anyway, there are some exquisite portrait shots in the movie, and this poster captures of a couple of them very well.

I do visit  eatbrie.com occasionally, and it always gets me how eclectic this collection is. I would welcome a search option as I go there from time to time to pay a visit to the French GWTW, and have to say, sometimes it feels just like it, impossible to find.  :P.

Thanks Brandon for the kind words.

As you may know, I buy a lot of posters and much choose which ones are worth posting on the forum, otherwise it would just be constant regurgitation.  I haven't posted on the new acquisition thread in a while because I feel I haven't purchased anything worth posting.  But please feel free to pluck anything I may have overlooked or that you find interesting.

I have to be selective.  Trust me, too much can make you throw up.

Even within my website, I try to be selective.  No more than 20% of my new acquisitions end up in my "Last 100 Best Purchases" thread, the rest disappears within the website, never to be seen again.

Plus, I truly believe that most of my posters do not interest anyone on the forum.  I'm sure a lot of members who NEVER post their new acquisitions feel that way too.

I think it's set up well.  By years, director, etc.  Just find one of those, press control+F and enter part of the word you're looking for, and voila.  There may be a few to search through then, but it's not like scrolling over the entire page.  And I agree, it's great to see such a nice, eclectic array of stuff there.

Amazing ROTJ. So glad you did get the Toy Story and Harry Potter.

You should be my PR, Brandon.  I didn't even know you could do that.  Thanks for the tip.

I will redo my website at some point with a search engine, I'm just too busy right now to even think about it.  I organized the website according to my taste, the people i like, which is obviously not for everyone.  For instance, I created a Nastassja Kinski sub category because she meant a lot to me growing up, but I can't imagine one other person caring about it.  A search engine would certainly broaden the website's appeal.  In time, all in time.

To be honest here, the website was never created for anyone else but me.  15 years ago, with 100 posters to my name, my wife put it together so I would spend less time in the garage rolling and unrolling my posters.  Little did she know, she created a monster.  I have a feeling she regrets it.

50-70 people visit it every day, which is 50-70 people more than I ever thought would.

Yeah, the control+F is a convenient search feature, and with that, it's not necessary for a site to have a separate search bar.

Your wife did a great job with the site.  The daily site traffic is probably a lot of folks who revisit it, as there is a wealth of content there.  Not many other places like that.  I miss visiting Holiday's old website.

First purchase off the bay in ages, but it was a must.  I had the 8mm film as a kid, it was about the 3rd or 4th film we got, so watched it many times, usually mocking the Awesome (not-so)special effects...  No wonder the poster is so scarce on a Quad.

Did get some others, BFG, The Boy, X-Men, Capt America, but I won't put you through them

I like the Jungle Book Paul. Question if I may, do you have any other quad versions? I seem to recall a different artwork. Too lazy to google... :P 8) eyeroll >:D girly2.gif

Chris!!! haha that is gonna get confusing, especially if CSM wanders back to us. I am glad you got that Polish paper, if you had not, it would have come to me! Thanks for the photos on the packaging also. If you like the way Wolfgang packaged it, you can always put him in sellers to praise. I pick up my flat package from him tomorrow.

PAUL!!!! That CLAW is EPIC!!!  clap

Jason You already know I love the Godzilla stuff you picked up......just send them to me, it will save time!!!

Jeff Isn't it funny how the backed Kong S2 went for 50% less?

How about a couple I posted in the wanted section several months ago.. Both Rolled. One I have in hand, the other is on its way. You can tell by my bad photograph which one I have!!!  I might be the only one who this made happy! Now if I can hook up with the Aussie fella with an Aussie daybill and a OS......haha No hurry Ari!!

Yeah, Chris,.. i think it shows (and like a number of other members have mentioned on the forum), that backing something may not bring more coin, and sometimes can bring a lesser (than expected) amount.

And with the S2s, no touch up or restoration should be needed, so it was backed, just to have all 3 sections "put together" and made whole, which would make it easier to frame, too, if wanted. Thing is -- backing a 3sh ain't cheap, either.
