D is for Dario. This dude/legend just brought back Rita to her former glory. It's on its way back to Australia. qip
The turnaround time for this piece was unbelievable. The amount of tape it had on the back of it was ridiculous.
You can see by the pics he sent me, how much work was involved. How many linen backers send you updates every couple of days? Dario does! 8)
What an Artist he is!!! clap clap clap

Matt said it was in shipping, so I expect closeups will have to wait.
Outstanding work on an outstanding poster.

Really fantastic, thanks for sharing the pics. So great to see stuff like this get preserved for future generations.
Makes me want to get going on my 'Linen Needed' stack. ($$$)

You and me both Ben, I keep putting it off due to the funds involved, but I must make a start....This year I promise... :D

+1 if you moved closer to the screen to check out the restoration job when this appeared on your monitor. ;)

Great work Dario and thanks for sharing the pics Matt.
Great to see Dario's reference images - I've always been curious about that particular part of the process (i.e. the actual recreation of missing portions).
From the close-up pic looks like at normal viewing distance most of the restoration will be invisible...

Some close ups as requested.

Is it amazing???
You seem to be very educated about Australian cinema poster art history. :P
Hmmmm... lucky we don't have to look in your mirror..Mr..Tom......Cruise. eyeroll

Thanks for the close-ups Matt. That is one top notch piece of restoration, Dario does need to be highly commended.
I do think restoration (and one reason I'm put off getting any done) results vary quite considerably. Taking Dario as an example, I have seen posters he's restored and thought, why is everyone banging on about him, I would be disappointed by what they had done. Then this....If you could guaranty that quality every time , why would you go else where....
First rate poster Matt, No wonder your so Happy with it. happy1
-
Paul, I've never had a significant restoration done outside Australia, but this was my first test case and I'm sold. End of story. I'm a very happy camper. ;D

It's amazing how that image looks nothing like Hayworth.
How something is expressed, via the written word, is everything as we know (texts, emails etc). And was was mentioned afterward, Hayworth's depiction is an Australian artist's interpretation. That being said, I think many will agree that there are a lot of daybills that have been created wherein the actor depicted looks almost nothing like the actual person. The flip can also be said of many others, where a particular artist nailed an actor's visage, spot on.
Like any kind of art created, this is also an aesthetic POV, since a daybill, such as the one shown here, may, to many, look JUST like Hayworth, and to others, (like Louie), she will bear no resemblance at all (aside from that classic pose).

The hair adds to the impact of the resto.... I am jealous of this guy's talent. If only he wasn't in freakin Canada. I got cold feet because of the whole customs BS last time. Still don't want to mess with it...

A partial OS for ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT being offered online. It looks like it would be a challenge ( and most likely not even worth doing, as so much would be re-creation) but wanted to show you anyhow ;) :

I saw that and I bet that is a Portal (or one of the many other repros of that poster) Jeff...

So even more reason not to. It was more the idea of a poster in this kind of tattered condition (and not being a one of a kind, either). ;)

I think I agree. There are no visible fold lines in the places they should be at. This poster would always be folded. It also seems too glossy.

Perfect Ari - I can see you taking tickets for the wax museum.
You'd have to give me a 2-for-1 deal though (the airfare to Oz will be pricey)

Matt, I'm wondering, does this mean you have had linen backing/restoration done in Australia? If so, anyone you'd reccommend? And if so is there a reason you wouldn't trust them with the extensive work Gilda required?
I have a few posters I've been contemplating getting backed and of course Dario's name is the one you hear most regularly. Was concerned that sending them to Canada was a bit excessive but if you and others have been doing it, maybe it's not that crazy. And of course those results and that turnaround speak for themselves.
-
Don't let distance be a concern when considering getting posters restored, afterall distance doesn't stop you from buying them does it?
-
Yes...!
-

Fair point David but I guess I'm just picturing those heavy duty cardboard tubes vs. the flat packaging they came in. And for me it's probably a matter of straight linen backing rather than restoration right now.
-
Leslie, there is only one restorer in Sydney. Michael Brewster. http://studiomvintageposters.com.au/ (http://studiomvintageposters.com.au/) He is capable of doing such a job. He restores not only cinema posters but also advertising/travel posters etc. Dario mainly restores the paper we love and he has the same amount of bond and passion that we do.
Michael's hourly rate is double that of Dario's and the turnover time is a lot longer. Michael charges $88 vs Dario $55 per daybill. So it's actually cheaper to send to Canada if you need more than an hour of restoration work done, or more than a couple backed. It's a no brainer really.
-

Luckily Matt qualifies automatically... ;D

Yeah I knew what you really meant Steve-o...
It's just the glare from the camera flash reflecting back from the worked-on areas. In my experience this occurs on most restored posters.
In normal lighting, from a normal distance all work is nearly invisible.
I think the stains/rust burns (from flooring nails!) on these posters were a bit of a challenge but overall these three turned out nicely.
-
Despite all that they look pretty nice I think - Lady in the Lake is very powerful and Kiss is really powerful nice but actually all three are a very nice triptych
-

Thanks Chris, after posting I thought it might be light reflection, as restoration by pencil tends to harden the surface making it more reflective.

Thanks Chris, after posting I thought it might be light reflection, as restoration by pencil tends to harden the surface making it more reflective.
The 'gloss' that the pencil leaves can look quite frightening in the 'wrong light' or up close (depending on the angle)! But it's a tradeoff vs. airbrushing over a larger area.
Nearly same thing occurred on my Big Sleep daybill (by a different restorer). However, it's nitpicking mainly (depending on the poster sometimes you need to) and once in the frame and on the wall should be nearly indiscernible :)
-
Yeah! Don't go and hang your posters with Rusty nails, now. moron1
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated!
There is an aura around each nail hole. it is more visible what I mean on the "Lady in the Lake" poster.
That's permanent change in the paper/fibre which make colours/sheen look a bit different and of course the flash from the camera.
It was easier to mask/hide that on The busy areas on the LITL poster.
Solid backgrounds are always a bit trickier.
The only way to really hide that would be air brushing which I did on The stain between "Reckoning and the NSFGE
I didn't want to go silly with to much work ( air brushing large area ) and keep it as conservative as possible.
Overall, I though I found a good balance.
All the best,
dario.

That is some beautiful restoration work there, Cyborg. It looks fantastic.
Dario certainly does some fine work!
clap clap
-
Le magnifique!
-
Dario's stuff is great as always, but I have noticed that he probably leaves the shortest linen border, compared to all the other restorers I have seen.
Is this good or bad, or does it even matter?
-
Is a certain length of excess linen considered a "standard" border to be left? Is it about 1/2" all the way around?
More? Less?
-
Hi Arnaud,
Thank you! Most kindness and awesomeness to you sir.
Pretty beaten up paper and thick stock made things difficult, but it did turn out pretty good.
As far as linen borders. I always gone with 1 cm (10mm ) all around. It's just a personal preference. We can leave what ever a client like?
Best regards to all,
dario
-
Now that's what restoration is all about:
1) Poster that REALLY needed it + 2) Talented, trustworthy restorer + 3) Framed on the wall = poster bliss!

Nice poster Cyborg and well done Dario

Looking good, Cyborg. happy1

I have messaged Dario Casadei twice now about my Return of the Jedi poster with comments about my needing a 3rd Edition SW:ANH E4 theatrical poster needing restored as well. I have received no response. Am I doing something wrong? I don't know what else to do. I have emailed him twice without response. Should I try someone else?
http://www.vintagemovieart.ca/ = This is the website I have used to contact him with....
I asked if the posters could be restored without alterations to the signatures... I wasn't sure if this was possible so I asked.

Hi Daniel,
Here's my 3rd reply to you. I don't know why you are not getting my messages??
Your very first message you sent had image of Return of the Jedi Style B One Sheet with no the autographs on it.
Here's some replies from the past. Aug 31 and Aug 18.
Hi Daniel,
I did reply august 18 : <<< Really hard to make out from the picture what is wrong. I don't see any autographs on the poster as well? Is this poster backed already? >>>
I attached the original picture you sent me as well back then. which shows no autographs??
Anyhow I see the new picture and the autographs.
It is risky since the poster needs top go in to a bath. They might float off.
Best,
dario.
-
Hi,
Thanks all.
Normaly i don't mind a few creases or tears, but this one was just to damaged.
And Daniel, i think you should check your spambox ;D
-
I can screenshot you pics of my Spam, Junk and Inbox. I have no idea why I am not getting your messages. It's bothering me now that I know you have been replying.... But I e-mailed you before I got autographs because I thought I could get it to you before they were signed.. but now my RotJ is signed. It's not so much that's it's got tears or creases, it has bumps from being handled. I will take pictures of it on the 13th from a side profile, maybe that will help you see what I mean.
Maybe the e-mail I supplied you is wrong... Now I am going to be thinking on it all day....
Sorry and thank you.
-

The message may be lost in a thread of messages. Maybe try doing a word search of your mail, using an unusual word or two from Dario's email above, maybe 'dario'. you might find it that way

How sweet it is...very nice

Funny, I saw both those films each week they played at Saturday matinee as a kid, Xmas story played again the next year in Australia also and I went again and again that year also.
Used to mime to the flash soundtrack with my best friend and do concerts for his family, charging them to watch and spending the money on cinema tickets. We went each Saturday from about age six to 12, cost about $1 for the matinee and we had $1 for lollies (candy) and felt like kings.
-
Dario, can you post pictures of that airplane flying over Nice? It's pretty dramatic and is quite a display of your amazing talent.

Hi T,
I think we can. Kindly, let me get my hands on it first, restoration vice.
The we'll do something.
All the best,
dario.

A Christmas Story is one of my favorite movies. I am going to the 30 year anniversary at A Christmas Story house the end of November. They have a bunch of the actors there for autographs and I'm getting my poster signed. Hopefully Ralphie shows up, he isn't on the list of guests but who knows. May make an appearance.
What should I have them use to autograph? Sharpie?

I haven't seen it since then, never seen it on video or DVD, guess I haven't looked but odd I haven't accidentally stumbled across it.
Have fun at the house, show, anniversary
Re pen, I guess sharpie, all that white it's made to be signed.

You could make it an "interesting" 'Then & Now' double bill night-- following Xmas Story up with one of Scott Schwartz's (character of Flick) later films. One such as:

I told the client. " Only a mad mad would attempt this.
Reply,"That's why I am sending it to you!
Probably one of my more difficult ones over the last few years.
The quality of the paper was horrible to begin with. So all that time in the bath made everything so much more difficult.
It was 3 steps forward and a step back throughout the restoration process. Constant surface lifts from masking off or filling in with pencils.

Man, I admire your patience, putting all those pieces back together...
Stunning work.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Dario Casedei is not a restorer. He is a restoration artist."

I second all of this. The piece is amazing (I think I remember seeing it on ebay).
Can you PLEASE offer linen/resto services to bigger formats? I would have a bunch of stuff to send you if you did...

You did it Dario - nice job.
I think you should concentrate more so on the 13x30 posters out there ;)

No kidding lol ;D

That really is first rate work, I may have to send one of my Jigsaw posters out to you…
The consignor must be over the moon. Excellent stuff Dario.
-
I will add to the chorus and also congratulate Dario for his skill in restoring this beautiful poster. The immediate thought I had was how many similar posters must have been discovered over the years in that condition and were simply thrown away.
I also vote for Dario to consider gearing up his operation to take in posters larger than Italian two-foglio size. He knows why! I recently sent him (with Ted's help - thank you Ted!) a Japanese BO to work on without checking that he could do it (such is my confidence in him) - without complaining and in his usual friendly manner he recommended a fellow professional who could handle that size and without any fuss shipped the poster on to them. It is Dario's attitude, as well as his skills, which gets him repeat business.

His work is as good as it gets and he is an extremely nice guy too, makes the decision easy.

Thank you guys! Much kindness. So nice to get some friendly comment after so much hard work!
The 1910 NICE poster was meant to be sold, but the client were pretty darn happy with it and decided to keep and frame. I hope to get a pic of it when framed.
Ugh, Here's another mess from the bottom of the sea. That I looked at today
Probably over a hundred cards and posters. Heavy cull. Lots beyond workable.

Was this lot found together or did some calamity (like a flood) befall them?

Hi Chris,
These are all found together. Full of sand/mud water damage.
Best,
Dario.

Please? :)

Not much more to add to the comments made because I'm busy picking my jaw off the floor!

Just got back from A Christmas Story Convention with my autographed poster I had Dario mount for me. Just wish Peter Billingsley, R.D. Robb and Melinda Dillon had made it to the convention.

I really should see this again, to been since it was at the cinema, I went each weekend to see it.

Didn't take any pics of the convention/signing. But I have some of the house I can post. Place was packed. All 4 actors said they don't see this version of the poster very often and Zack Wark "Scut Farkus" said it was his favorite version and would like to own one even made a point of calling his girlfriend/wife to come see it. Scott Schwartz seemed to be running the autographing, and lowered the price for me from $40 each to $20 each. I guess with posters they usually charge $40 a wack. The museum had 2 large versions and 1 daybill none linen mounted or framed well. This pic is taken on my way back to my room at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel where we stayed and the actors did while filming. Some stayed there while we were also.

Here is the Quad for this film. Not restored but has the same artwork. Thought you might like to see it.

That's Awesome, they didn't have the quad in their museum.

Christmas Story has a convention? I'm holding out for a Problem Child convention, then.
BTW, that daybill is the best format for that international art, IMO. (First time ever typing this).
Quad and one sheet leaves too much empty space, daybill looks natural for the art.
-
Not really a convention, they just had a 30 year anniversary celebration.

I guess, not only did I want to restore her poster, but also hopefully restore a bit of faith back in to the idea of sending a poster out for work.
Best regards to all the good folks on APF.

Is the Facebook page Vintage Movie Art or Dario Casadei?
-
I second all of this. The piece is amazing (I think I remember seeing it on ebay).
Ooh boy , that one came out pretty cool Dario.
Yes the Nice aviation poster was indeed on eBay, first sold in France for less then 150 euro (if not mistaken) I had it on my watch list, it was poorly listed so sold very cheap.(didn't dare to bid on it due to state)
Then it went to a vintage poster galley guy form Uk and was relisted for a whopping 3000$ or so BIN.
Not sold and after I few times relisted as regular auction sold around 1000 euro .
Normally they sell around 10000-14000 at auction. (PAI, Swann,...) so probably still a good investment.
-
It's been a year since i last sent out posters for mounting to Dario, but this is my most recent batch. Very excited to get these home and framed.
