Poster Backing with a slightly Different Approach
« on: May 31, 2014, 07:20:20 PM »
Paper and poster conservator, Allan Thenen, from St Paul, MN, shows how he linen backs posters-- without using Japanese Masa paper or using frames, that support his cotton backing. Watch as he washes a poster in a water and ammonia bath, and applies the wheat paste directly onto the washed, cotton material, which has been laid and supported on a piece of plexi. No frames with stretched canvas used.

Allen Thenen has been doing paper and map conservation for years. An interesting clip to watch.

The cotton material he uses looks very thin and flimsy. That might not make for a sturdy back support. It almost looks like some of the thinner grade material used in Europe, sometimes.
