Cameron's Piranha 2 Vs The Spawning

I have these 2 posters for Piranha 2.  Does anyone know why the two titles?  Both posters are US.

Maybe they thought "The Spawning" was just about sex-crazed fish??? 
Maybe they wanted to distance themselves from the first "Piranha?"

The only thing I could find was -- it's just a shortened title....



are those posters dated differently?
