Academy Awards 2013
« on: December 06, 2012, 07:57:59 PM »
It's this time of the year again...  Nominations will be announced in a month.

I believe 7 movies will get nominated for Best Picture...  I loved them all, so I would be very pleased (I have yet to see Django and The Hobbit, but I'm not holding my breath).

Ultimately, I think it's going to be a fight to the finish between Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.

I've only seen two of those - Lincoln and Argo, which I agree will likely get nominated for Best Picture. I want to see Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty and maybe Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook too. I have just recently heard good things about Beasts of the Southern Wild. I think I may have to check this film out too.

I'll bet you even on Les Miserables against Lincoln.

See Zero Dark Thirty first.  Don't take me wrong, Les Misérables was great, but Zero Dark Thirty had me on the edge of my seat until the end.  And yes, I knew the ending.

I haven't seen it, which is why I wanted to bet only against Lincoln!

Now I am really looking forward to Zero Dark Thirty!

And I knew the ending to Lincoln without seeing it!

I think I'm seeing Django Saturday morning.  I will post my findings here.

Seeing The Hobbit tonight. Not that it stands much of a chance to be nominated.

AFI came up with their list yesterday, which is all of the above, plus "Dark Knight Rises", "Django Unchained" and "Moonrise Kingdom."  I'm sticking to my guns with 7.  The Academy might go for 8, but I don't think they will repeat the 10 fiasco of 2 years ago.  Too many movies.

Out of those 3, I think "Moonrise Kingdom" might stand a chance. I would have said "The Master" had a decent chance for a nomination 2 months ago, but that also seems really unlikely now.

A lot of people didn't like The Master.  It is a love it or hate it kinda movie.  It got an initial boost from the love it people, but eventually lost steam.  The same goes with Wes Anderson.  A lot of people can't stand him or his movies, which makes it hard for him during award season.  They have been pushing Dark Knight in the trades, but ultimately, Django's release date is its strongest weapon.

LA Times: 'The Avengers' voted most overrated movie of 2012 by a landslide

Sure, it featured one of the most star-studded ensembles in the history of comic book movies. And yes, it took in more box-office dollars than any other movie in 2012. But Marvel Studios' "The Avengers" can now also boast another, less noble distinction: the most overrated film of the year.

According to more than 2,600 respondents to a Times online survey Joss Whedon's get-the-band-together take on the iconic superheroes was the most overpraised feature film of 2012.....

So T, what did you think of Django? I watched it last night and I personally feel that QT is his own worst enemy! Ive said this since Tony Scott did QT's script for True Romance and will probably say it until I die, QT cannot direct a movie!!! But that man can write a great story! Every QT movie just has to feel like its from the 70's and have all of the blood and gore just overdone to the max and I think that hurts the presentation sometimes. At least he stuck to a linear story line this time. Maybe he's learned from some past criticisms. I think, had this script been in another directors hands with the same cast, it could have been a great movie. But as it sits to me its just pretty good and I probably would never watch it again. As for individual performances I think Christoph Waltz was the stand out in this film. Dr. King Schultz's panache really made his a stand out character to me. ;)

Before the nominations were announced it seemed Zero Dark Thirty was the front runner for Best Picture. Now I don't think it is anymore with it not getting nominated for Best Director, so what is now the front runner(s) for Best Picture?

It might be back to Lincoln, Juli.  Spielberg might get his 2nd Best Picture oscar and 3rd Best Director.

That would be awesome! I really want him to win for Director and Lincoln to win Best Picture.

Really? I thought Lincoln was a good, but very flawed movie. It didn't make my top 5. And I can't believe that John Williams' "phoned in" score got nominated. Or Sally Field's annoyingly over-the-top performance for that matter.

I still think Zero Dark Thirty is the better picture, but you're right, Bigelow not being nominated kills its chances.  It has happened once in the past 60 years, in 1989 when Driving Miss Daisy won and Bruce Beresford was not even nominated.  I think Lincoln will win, although the director's statuette could still go to David O. Russell or Ang Lee if there is Spielberg fatigue.

Personally, I'd go Lincoln, Spielberg, Daniel Day Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Hathaway.  Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty for screenplays.

4 of my friends are voting, 1 director, 2 producers and 1 actor, and aside for 2 voting for Jessica Chastain, that's where their votes will go.

Some other stuff that piss me off:

- "Jiro Dreams Of Sushi" not getting nominated for documentary feature. As much as I enjoyed "The Gatekeepers" and "Searching for Sugar Man", I thought "Jiro" was hands-down the best doc of 2012.
- Bigelow not getting nominated for "Zero Dark Thirty". A travesty!
- Affleck not getting nominated for directing for "Argo". I used to think he was a douchebag, now I really think the guy is a serious directing talent. He deserved a nomination.
- "Snow White and the Huntsman" getting nominated for visual effects. That "film" didn't just suck, it also looked like shit.
