Certainly a long way off from the original Mummy 3sh with Mr. Karloff. What's interesting is that, sadly, the image of the mummy on the 3sh above (his face, at least) is probably the weakest element on the entire poster. A sign of the times and budget.  :-[

Tyler definitely was the scariest Mummy though!

In this publicity shot, he looks kinda bored.

But I agree that making his eyes like empty sockets in the movie (done in post-prod) was a very creepy effect, no doubt about it.  cheers

Also mistakenly used on the Belgian re-release of The Mummy's Curse:

Interesting how there are a couple Uni horror Belgians that used the wrong version of the monster. Same here with their 1950s poster for Frankenstein, using Glenn Strange's image.

A 1953RR Realart OS for The Mummy's Ghost (1944), with Lon Chaney. Me likes this poster. Chaney's image has the definite creep factor going here, almost more so than on the original OS, imo.

1944 original release OS:

I was wondering the same thing, when I looked at the poster. Does Chaney ever appears as himself, a la Karloff, in any flashback scenes?  It's been so many years since I've seen this movie, that I can't recall. If he does, then it makes sense, in some fashion.

If he doesn't, did Universal just want his "pretty face" on the poster? I don't think that Chaney could have insisted on something like this, as he would have been under contract to Universal and had little to no say in such matters.  :-\

He doesn't Jeff, the flask-backs are always of Karloff, or Tom Tyler.

I don't think he was still under contract to Universal in 53 anyway.

Maybe not in '53, but the movie was made in 1944, so I'm sure Chaney was under contract with Universal then.

Paul, the OS image I posted above, with Chaney's actual face shown (his floating head) is the first release one sheet from 1944.

Universal used the same image of Chaney (lower left) on the 1944 first release 3sh, as well:

With all the work that has been done to that card, I can't believe they would even try to put a $6K reserve on it

Sean, would that 6K reserve would have been set (or suggested) by the consignor alone? Or in conjunction with the auction folks, as well?

I would have been set by the consignor. But is a great microcosm of the auction as a whole, unrealistic reserves on problem pieces that taint the auction.

And not a bad price, either, realized for that cool little sticker ($224.00).

Cool find, Ted.
