Do you know whether they used any of the same art back in '35?

Nope. don't know...
I know a collector here who might know (as he supposedly owns some local posters for early horror classics). Shoot him several emails, with no answer...

Wow, that poster has been so disfigured it shouldn't even be allowed on here.
The text "タイン" below "フランケンシュ" was cut off from the side so the word "Frankenstein" is now on two lines, the English title panel and the Japanese credit panel were both cut and removed from below and to the right of the image, the red Japanese kanji "の幽霊" were individually cut and pasted on and finally a good 6" of art has been trimmed vertically on the right side, while another 6-8" of art has been trimmed horizontally from the bottom.
Blech.

Here is what an unaltered one looks like:

Wow, that is quite the hack job, Sean.
I'd remove it from this thread, but your explanation of all the cut and paste is too educational to lose.
Thanks for setting the record straight as the image I posted is all over the internet on several sites.
I have to admit I like the green hues in the hack job though....
 cheers

For god's sake Sean, is a Frankenstein poster after all... Wasn't the man built from pieces?  ;)

most people don't know he operated a comics & poster shop in Japan in the 1990s. Might have been 2 stores.

I didn't know he could speak Japanese either until he read some writing on the back of a poster I had at the office. I was rather surprised

Agree with Sean on this.
I have never seen a Japanese headline where a name or a word was cut into two lines. That's just completely wrong.

Bruce also gives a great and interesting description of how the separately printed text elements were carefully glued onto the copy he had:

"Important Added Info: Note that only the single top word in red across the monster's forehead, and the symbol directly below the last letter of that word were actually printed on the poster. The three letters below the top word and the two large red characters at right center, as well as the two large black text blocks at bottom, and the Universal logo, were all printed on separate pieces of paper and carefully glued in place! I have no idea why this was done, but it seems certain that it was done at the time the poster was created or shortly thereafter, and by the studio. Perhaps an expert on Japanese posters could tell us more about this (and if they have ever seen any other Japanese Universal horror posters from right after World War II; this is the only one I have ever seen and it has a wonderful image)."

I noticed this poster has the MPEA logo like my Czech Phantom poster.  Regarding my poster, Bruce said:

That MPEA guarantees it is 1946 to 1948 (long story as to why)

For those interested, I assume this is the 'long story' Bruce is referring to:
