Ves, you have a large collection of Aus posters. The connection / attraction is not reliant on you physically being at the original theatre release, is it? You are a collector, that's who will buy the posters. More collectors entering the field.

Yes I agree, my attraction to the posters is not reliant on being at the screening, but it is pretty reliant on actually being interested in all types of films.  I don't like horror, so I don't collect it.  I don't like Sci Fi so I don't collect it.  I lurve Vincent Price, so I collect Vincent Price...I'm an aussie so it is interesting to me to see how our films are "sold" overseas as well as at home...

I just think that the generational collectors to come to this hobby in the future having limited or no exposure to say, silent films will be less likely to pay the big bucks you think they are going to command, and will generally be interested in what they grew up with, and happier to spend their big bucks there.
I'm not denying there will be the odd collector here or there, or the odd purchase by a non collector to have the nice old poster on their wall...I just don't think that there will be this mass migration of new collectors to the older stuff...

How about Mel? He starts with what he likes, then progresses as a collector, towards higher ends of the hobby. It's a natural progression. Why do you think APF is getting busier (apparently)? More awareness / interest / collectors.

I think people have different reasons for collecting what they do...I'm not going to comment on why other collectors collect what they do...
But as I understand it, you are saying that collectors yet to come to this hobby will put a higher value on posters from say the silent era just because they are old?
Boy, I wish that was true...I reckon I'd be lucky to get a fraction of what I've spent on my old crap now, let alone in 30, 40, 50 years time...

Work? Damn, it's 3:10 am here and must get there at 8:00 am. That leaves me less than 5 hours of sleep. Long day awaits tomorrow  :-\

Actually, I never mentioned silent films at any time. That was Chris. I wouldn't know if they are up or down, as it's not my area of interest.
I'm basing my argument solely on speculation that more collectors are joining the hobby. As one of the others mentioned, mp collecting is still quite new. There's an upside, if you have the right material, and you paid the right price to start with.  ;)
Check all the new websites popping up.

Gotta dash ...

I don't know what its come to, all I know is I don't like it.

But wait it gets worse, yesterday we saw (in K mart):

Ramones T shirts,
"old worn, faded, etc" jeans (god they mnake me angry).
But wait.
Pre CREASED jeans (like crumpled )

and...

JUMPERS WITH LINT... actually deliberately put on "lint" or Faux Lint.

So you can now go buy brand new clothes and come out looking scruffy.

What next? pre soiled nappies for the hip baby?

ask the next young person you see in a Ramones T-shirt about the band. They haven't got a clue.

And I don't go out of my way to buy silent era posters. I have a few 1920s daybills ands they are nice, but not really my high priority.
