Mario @ Lumiere - judge for yourself:

I had a close look over The Glass Key image, personally I might keep looking for another restorer. Thanks

Looks much better than they were though!

Was the printing of The Glass Key full bleed to the left, or was it cropped prior to finding and restoration?

Nice jobs all though.

Eagle eye Steve! To be honest, that wouldn't trouble me, he managed to restore it keeping all the original lettering and logo, reconstructing the missing bit.  It is a difficult job so overall i think he did a rather good job, but I see what you see  :)

Maybe those smudges happened when Chris cried tears of joy on viewing the freshly restored insert.  ;D

Simon,

Looking closely at Chris' before pic.. it appears that there is a very small area of border nearer the top, next to Brian Donlevy's name. It then appears to taper gently to a no border area, looking more full bleed, starting near Hammett's name.

May have been trimmed at one point? Or printed slightly off center of the paper itself?

"Paging Dr Chris, paging Dr Chris... "

Steve - have you had many posters restored?  I seem to recall you had some 6 sheets worked on at some point (this could just be a fanciful memory) but alas.  In my experience, the work Mario has done on these three posters is some of the best I have seen.  They were all very rough and the Glass Key in particular had a massive amount of very tricky paper loss.  I am just kindly questioning if perhaps your expecations are slightly inflated?

Of course there are slight imperfections one could pick out (yes there is some ink smudging in the printer details and the Paramount logo is not a facsimile) if comparing these examples to a mint unrestored copy coming off the presses but one should also keep in mind that the photos I shared are right up close to the paper with a bright flash - how often do we ever see photos that close of restored areas? - which can reveal all the intricacies of the work.

In general,  the posters are meant to be viewed from a slight distance.  That said, even up close, what Mario has managed to accomplish both in terms of paper recreation, colour matching and texture is pretty astonishing.  Other restorers I contacted were reluctant to even take on the task.

Needless to say, I am very, very pleased with the work done on these posters.

Yes the Glass Key was printed that way and was not trimmed.  Just a misalignment on the printing press or the cutting afterwards.  Many Richardson Studio daybills are like that

I have had a lot of Charlie dislikes the term linenbacked posters, but I haven't had much art recreation done. I do have a 6 sheet with an area the size of a baseball recreated. Heritage sold me the poster as Mint obviously not seeing the recreation and I missed it for some while too - it was very well done. Sure my expectation may be too high, I dont know, though I would think recreating text should be able to be more accurately done than the below example and a plastic circle template like used in schools could get the circle correct. I guess I expect too much from professionals!

Like I said they look a lot better, so well done. It does make me very hesitant of buying linenbacked posters knowing all the sins they can hide. I try to must ensure that I get the opportunity to inspect them in person before parting with cash. Note to self... good luck with that one.

Agree with you Steve.. especially when the Paramount logo could have been easily referenced from another daybill and made it spot on and more evenly circular in that lower right area of the logo.

UNLESS...

it was done that way on the original...

There is often talk and commentary here on APF about how often the actors arent "quite themselves" on daybills.

Maybe the same goes for the various studio logos, too?

Artistic license, and all.  ;D
