How to store posters upright??
« on: January 16, 2012, 04:37:53 PM »
I need some plans and ideas. I want to put the posters in mylar sleeves, and store them upright, don't have the space for flat storage.
Is the mylar rigid enough to hold upright? I was thinking of sandwiching them all between two thick pieces of foamboard if they aren't rigid enough to hold upright.

I don't have any mylar but I would guess with some confidence that they are going to bow in the middle - you are essentially balancing the weight of the mylar and the poster on a couple millimetre width surface

Is it worth the extra cost for mylar? clarity? etc?

It will average out to mylar and .040 backings $19 a poster
4 Mil poly sleeves and thick .188 backing $9 a poster

don't have the space for flat storage.

Do they get smaller when they are not flat or something?

Thanks.  You know what you did.

when flat, I need atleast 30x 42 inches of floorspace. I dont have that much of posters, so I can lean them against the wall.

Rather than trying to get additional stiffness from the mylar itself, a better solution is to use a backing board for the stiffness.  Works better and is cheaper.  Then you can use the cheaper poly bags.

Once you start bagging and boarding your posters, you are going to hit 30x42 in floor space pretty quickly.

I figured it would be easier to sort and look through the posters if stored upright as well.

Lets say I go though and store them flat. I will use mylar for each, but what is a temporary stand or ideas that I can use? Flat files are too expensive right now.

Just a thought...

Thats what I was thinking about too, something cheap and similar to that, where its on an angle and has a backing so the posters don't bow.

If I lean an old flat poster frame against the wall on a slight angle. and then the posters in mylar against it, would there be any problems?

Unless i stick with the poly and go with the thick backing boards.

or is mylar that much more clearer?

Poly is basically 100% clear.

I would suppose,if you mean displaying on a short term basis, then affixing your poster on an easel is an idea, but long term, storage solutiions ? I have often pondered, one forum member did suggest that perhaps try not to think too hard..an old suitcase under the bed could be just the right solution for my storage query too...

I am thinking about just getting the Poly bags, and these boards here.
Any problems or objections with this backing here?

Man, I think you love your posters more than anyone.  I just bought a flat file and stuck them non-framed ones in there.

Mike - I would be worried about that foam board not fitting in the poly bags?

Bagsunlimited sells the boards. If you click on the bags, this was one under the list of recommendations with the item. So, I am highly guessing the boards should fit in the poly bags.

You could probably flip them a quick e-mail but the foam board just looks a little thick.

Would this work?
Just get the poly bags, sandwich all the posters(there is about 30) together between two thick pieces of archival foam board, clamp together with large binder clips?

I have went ahead and purchased some mylar bags. I did not get any backings for now as they are too expensive. I will wait after, so I just purchased the mylar sleeves for now. Hopefully I don't have any problems getting the posters in them w/out backings for now.

Mike, How did these mylar sleeves without the backing board work out for you? Was it still too flimsy to lean them against the wall, without them bowing at all?

I never went through with the purchase at that time. I ended up canceling the order
I bought a couple of foam board sheets and sandwiched the posters between the boards. But there ended up being too many posters so even the foamboard sandwich couldn't hold with the clamps.

I then purchased poly bags from uline. But they need backing boards to flip through the posters.
