Home Alone
« on: July 04, 2011, 01:14:52 PM »
I purchased a Home Alone poster. I need to know if there are fakes out there also I need help authenticating it. What do I need to look for when I am authenticating it? Also the one I purchased is not the normal blue one you always see. It is white with Mulkuly Culkin on it and in a bubble he is saying "holy cow". So any help will be greatly appreciated in authenticating it as I am new to the poster collecting word.

You mean like this one? http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/11131476.html

It is an advance.  Not worth a ton, but also unlikely to have been reproduced.  Likely genuine.

It is an advance poster. How can you tell if this authentic or not? What should I look for?

One important piece you could provide is from where/who you bought it from?

This was purchased from a friend of mine that use to be a manager at a movie theater from the early 80's to the mid 90's before it closed down. That is why I am positive that it is authentic but I want to be 100% positive. Right now I am probably only 95% positive lol. I can try to get some pics posted of it to help with authenticating it and maybe determining the value of it. Are there certain areas of the poster I should take pictures of?

Provide a full shot of the entire poster and get some closeups of the info across the bottom.

If someone has faked Home Alone, its time for me to pack up my bags and move to the hills.

If you bought this from a manager of a theater, then this is most likely the real deal. Fakes or repros were not sent to theaters. Is your poster 27"x41"? Does the text and font at the bottom look sharp and crisp? Sounds like your source was reliable. The last one Bruce sold, went for $5.00, in 2009. And in July of 2002, he sold one for $11.51

I tried to post pics but yes the lettering at the bottom is sharp and crisp also the poster is double sided as well. The poster is in excellent condition. The only thing I have noticed with it is just a few light wrinkles. They are not even noticable unless you are up really close to it.

True, but one of the standard methods of getting a real poster for a theatre employee was from them to buy a reprint and swap it out with an original.  Also, some arthouse/rep theaters have used various reprints to fill in for real posters.  I once saw a full-size moviegoods quality reprint for Jaws being used at the AFI Silver theater.

What Ari said...

And question...if a repro is used at a theatre, does that make it  legit? ;)

Folks, we are talking about a Home Alone Advance with a questionable image on it.  Legitimate versions go for a buck or two at auction, so why would anyone even consider reproducing it?

Actually what Vesna says makes sense.
 Whats a genuine theatre poster?
One that is used in a theatre? or
one that was intended to be used in a theatre but wasn't?

We keep having this discussion.  Never resolving it either.  A factor in why I don't collect much post 1980.  Also why I look for less than perfect, theater used examples.

If the studio authorizes a gazillion 27x40 mass market posters for say, Black Swan once they see it is a moneymaker, is it a legitimate poster??

yeah I am glad I really don't collect modern posters (with some exceptions - not many, just that Hammer is up and running again).
I love old posters with playing times etc written on them, or notes on the back.
Pinholes are the new black ;)

A general rule of thumb is to look on emovieposter or heritage database.  If the poster regularly sells for under $50, it wasn't worth anyone's time to reproduce it.

If the poster is pre-90s, and is 27x40 it is a repro.  If it is 27x41 it is likely legit, unless it is one of the heavily pirated ones.

Look on ebay for the poster and see if anyone is selling full sized items marked as reproductions.  If they aren't out there, the odds that this one a is repro or forgery go way down.

Look on Mel's authentication site or the lamp one for known forgeries.

If it isn't a popular or cult title, it likely isn't a forgery

Anyone else want to chime in?
