I had approval to buy it if I wanted it  :-\  but it was just a little too iffy to get a successful restore, so I didn't bid.

I think someone might have picked up a bargain despite the restoration that will be required.

I agree with you on this, too, John, considering that only the borders were trimmed and all of the artwork is intact.

It really all hinges on what kind of glue was used to attach it to the masonite, and whether that could be dissolved so the daybill could be removed.

If easily removed from the board, things like that water mark and missing borders could then be dealt with and corrected.

If not removable, to be enjoyed as is.

I do like that frame, too, Paul. It has a very 30's deco look to it.   thumbup

Our problem/woory is importing into Australia as is, is all that wood, Customs would have a field day spraying it for bugs, very few Customs officials are poster collectors...hence the need to get it off the board/frame (although I agree the frame is cool).

Wow, that would not be good.

Talk about pesticide residue and additional staining to the poster, when all was said and done.

Two extremely rare Wizard of Oz one sheets (both Style C and Style D) sold today for high prices, along with some Tarzan posters. (All prices below do not include 10% buyers premium). From the estate of MGM animal trainer and performer Volney Phifer:

So the poster is bought from one auction house and then will go to auction at another. That seller must be pretty confident they will get more at the 2nd auction house (Heritage) to make a profit, I guess it would have to sell for quite a bit more to break even with both auctions costs covered too. Maybe we should be doing the same, buying from elsewhere and selling on Heritage.

The auction was not well-publicized but could be found and was found by some "deep pockets."

Even if Heritage waives the sellers premium, it must sell for $36,650+ to make a profit.

Unless it was bought by HA who know they have a couple of customers they can spruik it to for a bidding war

This actually happens a lot.  Seems like certain posters just get recycled from auction to auction

question Mel: what is wrong with someone buying a poster from one place and offering it in any other place for more money?

2nd question: in the poster hobby, is price a "fixed quantity" or is it a "variable asset"?

That's capitalism, man, can't complain too much about it.  However, I think collectors should be more vigilant and bid in these obscure auctions to get the best deals. Maybe they did in this particular case.  This particularly auction was easy to find on AuctionZip.com by searching for "movie poster" and checking out the "live lots."

Night of the Demon (UK Title) / Curse of the Demon (US Title), 1957; Italian 2-Foglio

Sold: $3700.00 (1 bid)

Agreed Chris... I was watching it and wondering if it would sell at that price.  I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when it did... that could very well even top the quad.

Wash your mouth out Harry Caul.... ;)

It is a very nice poster, and a vast amount cheaper than the Quad would be, so penny for penny a better buy. I should have bid maybe, but would rather put the funds to a Quad....If one ever turns up again. :-\
