Grease Spots
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:52:01 PM »
So stupidly, I got a tube from Bruce yesterday, opened it in the kitchen and laid the posters on a counter that still had some grease on.  Every poster got a little spot of grease, about 1 inch wide, which I can't stand, and in typical fashion, I threw all of them away.  There goes $150.  Retrospectively, maybe I should have asked someone in the know if there are any ways to eliminate, or at least attenuate grease spots.  I didn't have the patience yesterday, but maybe it can be helpful for the future.

Wow! ... I wouldn't throw the things away either.
That seems a lot of money to waste T, or were the posters wrecked??
I know from your website and posts that you have only the best gear.

Bummer. But don't be surprised if from now on you see AllPosterForum members lurking outside your house by the trash.

Yeah, well, my post was not about throwing away posters, it was about grease spots.

Sorry guys, but grease spots are a no-no in my book, so I didn't even have the slightest hesitation.  It's like tears on a modern poster.  I am extremely anal with things like that.  Anal to the point where I'd feel bad sending them to someone else.

So... regarding my question???

Bruce, you don't have an answer either?  I know salt is supposed to soak up grease, but on posters...?

Would Lighter fluid do it!!! pore some on and dab up the residue... just a thought, I know it gets Sellotape off by dissolving the glue without damaging the poster.

I would have thought the coating on modern posters would help keep the grease from dissolving. A restorer would likely use some solvent that would hopefully dissolve the grease without harming the poster. Any good restorer should weigh in here.

I know that back in the day I sent several posters with grease type stains to restorers, and they came out, as best as I recall.

Nothing important, thankfully.  A bunch of Japanese B2s like Lifeforce, Exotica...  6 or 7 cheap posters, not one expensive one.

I had a run in with popcorn oil, went through a stack of 15 - 20 posters. Anything I buy now, I hold up to a spot light to check for stuff like that and put it in a cheap isolation bad if anything appears out of wack.

Oil mark on poster paper
« Reply #15 on: September 17, 2015, 08:04:04 PM »
Can an oil mark or spot (one that can appear from either a drop of, let's say, vegetable oil, or even when one lays a potato chip on paper or a napkin and the oil soaks in, and causes that mark) like this be removed from paper?

I'm thinking, once it has gotten into the paper fibers, that it might be there to stay but am not sure.

And if it can be removed or lessened in appearance, what would be used?

Thanks all, in advance.

Take it to your local auto repairer and have them apply liberally some engine degreaser

This is actually the icing on the cake, it is secretly applied to add that very special and unique fragrant smell that will have the lady in the house suggesting you buy even more posters
