How price's have changed
« on: January 25, 2011, 12:31:07 PM »
I was looking for an article in a Monster Mag, and came across this, which just shows how young the Hobby is. It's from 1976, and is saying an original 58 Dracula Quad could go for as much as £15...    I'll have 10 of them please.

It's more than a Hobby...

Somewhere I have Fred Clarke's CINEFANTASTIQUE catalog from 1966, where I bought many posters.
His one sheets ranged from $1.50 to $4.50.
From that first catalog, I bought FORBIDDEN PLANET for $3., THE GIANT BEHEMOTH for $1.50, MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS for $1.50, THE MOLE PEOPLE for $2,...and on and on.....
Wish I had a f&%@ing time machine....  moron1

No, Harry.
Once I hit puberty and discovered women, I sold most everything (about 100 one sheets) I had for date money.
What a f&^%ing tard I was...  mesmrized

I did save a few, like a BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS WC ($2)...

I am hoping to replace them later this year -- at great expense, obviously...

What a racket he was running...selling a 10 year old poster for $3 when he was probably still going over to the exchange and just picking them up when you ordered one for $1 or less.

Any of you American fellows remember these...    It's the first edition from 82, and the updated edition from 85. as much as the prices had risen by then. By todays standards they are amazingly cheap!     The 32 Mummy 1sht valued at $3000, it's giving it away. Just wait until me, and Ted get our Time-Machine.

NSS exchange of course.  I bought a Forbidden Planet insert last year from a collector who had purchased his directly from an exchange in the 70s.  By that time they were charging him the ridiculous price of $1.50 for it.

Paul, I have the blue cover one you picture on the left.  Didn't get the updated one, as I got Warren's first Movie Poster Price Guide around that time, lots of photos and much more realistic prices (at least at that time).

I have no idea how accurate/up to date those publications were, but I can say for sure that the Overstreet (comic) Price Guide has always notoriously undervalued may key books (hell, may books in general).  I know collectors point to prices in the old OPGs and marvel at what an Action 1, Tec 27, or Marvel Comics 1 was worth back in the day.  What they don't realize, and what may parallel those movie poster guides, is that the market price was far higher (especially for high grade copies) than what was stated in the guides.  Bruce, Rich, and Sean can attest to this

The first one from 1970 is the most valuable and sought after.  The next few (OSPG 2-5) can command a decent price depending on grade

Angelo, I think these are worth cherry-bobs. These three aren't even Over street, the one that is I've miss placed at the moment, but it has an Alien on the cover from Alien!!

Paul

Duncan McAlpine wrote the UK Price Guides for years.
I believe he used to own a comic ship in London and though I haven't seen him for 15 years or more, he is one of the nicest guys in the comic hobby

by the way, the UK guides reflect the prices in the UK market for US & British comics which are different than the values in the US

Thanks for the info Rich, the guides do have an excellent British section, which I found very useful when sorting out some British release comics I had. I don't know if it's me but they seemed better all round than the over street guides!

Angelo is right. EVERY price guide shares a common feature. They list items that every dealer has at two or three times the real going price (at least) so that those items will LOOK like a bargain when the suckers buy them for "half of guide".

They also all list items no one has (like Mummy one-sheets) for far lower than they really would sell for, so that when someone finds one in their attic they THINK they are getting a great price when a dealer offers them "full guide" for it.

Price guides are every dealer's best pal. They keep raising prices year after year, even if the true market has gone down. This leads investors into thinking their investing is paying fat dividends!

There oughta be a law.

Harry, in this hobby proce guides have never taken hold. In comics however, or baseball cards.. well those are the 2 markets specifically he really means (Bruce, Sean and I all come from the world of comics).

Comics is in reality the epitome of conflict of interest, false reporting and out-and-out lies.
It's very much like being in the coporate office of any large corporation and how they talk about screwing the consumers. I spent 35 years there as one of the very top dealers before calling it (mostly) quits
