Lenticular Damage.
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:25:07 AM »
hey gang...

iv come across a nightmare before christmas original release poster, but it has the bubble effect on 3 corners and a nice 1.5 inch dent which also has the bubble arround it. does anyone know if over time these will spread, or any way to get rid of these things?

happy holidays

I know little about lenticulars.. and was curious about this, too. I'm thinking that once the layers separate, get air bubbles or crack, that might be the "death call" for it?  :-[

It is possible that jedgerley (Jason) might have some insight on this as he has a ton of lenticular posters.

Years ago someone used to occasionally post on MOPO purporting to be the World's Greatest Lenticular Repair Specialist - I wonder if anyone else remembers him.

I think you're safe if their just sitting around.I've got a few with some slight dents and bubbleage in the corners.I've had em' fifteen years and nothing spread.
The only thing I would wonder about is how they would react to the heat of a light box.I doubt this would effect them either but it's something to consider.Just simply monitor them to make sure,if anything changes pull them out.

Well good thing we all got around to answering this question 4 years later :)
My opinion the bubbles wont get larger on their own.  Flexing the plastic may make it get slightly bigger.
Exposing the air in the bubble to heat causing the air pocket to expand may also make it larger. Just all depends on the amount of heat and how well the nonbubbly area near the bubble is adhered.
This the guy you were thinking of Michael Koytluk (worlds only lenticular restorer) <--- taken from LAMP (never seen a before or after example)
And to repair a crack I am guessing would always be noticable but could be stabilized.
If I had a large bubble would probably try to make a super tiny hole with a needle to release the air before lightboxing it. but only if I noticed the bubble swells in heat. In addition some type of adhesive could be injected and air could be pushed out from the bubble so the backing stays affixed.
I don't recommend trying anything without testing on a lesser lenticular of course.

Joney's last log in was 3 days before I asked them about the bubbles in hopes they would check back in again and post :)

I was informed heat, exposure to the elements and probably a bad job with the UV adhesive.

Additionally to me it looks like it definitely wasn't stored with any sense of care, because that didn't happen overnight. Its so severe it make me think someone rolled it (if possible) or had it leaning against a wall causing stress and separation. Heck maybe it was baking on a roof.  It seems you really have to try to get it to look that bad.  if you look closely the air pockets are larger than they appear. if you press down on them the bubble will go away for a while. Looks like a valiant effort to roll out the air and flatten it out a bit.
