I'm not a troll. I think the audience ratings are well-earned. This story has issues. If it wasn't Star Wars, nobody would give a f#$% about it.
I am a lifelong fan of these movies. I saw the original Star Wars when I was 10 years old when it came out in 1977. After seeing what they came up with for this movie, I was underwhelmed.
I really liked TFA because it reset everything, got rid of the bad taste in my mouth after the terrible prequels and made me really excited to see what the new characters Poe, Finn, Rey and Kylo would do next. I also really enjoyed Rogue One. Needless to say, my expectations were very high. This movie was very disappointing.
Spoilers follow
All of these things took me out of the movie and detracted from my enjoyment:
How Luke Skywalker was utilized.
The answer to the Rey's parents question (although he could be an unreliable narrator).
Pretty much the entire Canto Bight side plot.
Too many forced jokes rammed in. Humor is a part of all the Star Wars movies, but it was overdone and fell flat too often. Blue-green alien seacow milk? Really? WTF.
Too many plot contrivances. Slow bombers in space needing gravity. Space Ghost Coast to Coast Leia. Battlestar Galactica Rebels. Why didn't the First Order just hyperjump ahead and cut them off? Why is BDT in a jail that he can escape from anytime he wants? BB-8 can really hotwire a Walker? Holdo still has shields. why doesn't she just get between the escaping ships and the First Order fleet to cover them?
With the exception of Kylo and Luke, did any of the other main characters change or grow? You could pretty much cut every single scene of Finn's from the movie, and it would not have any effect.
If the goal was to shit on everything in the Star Wars universe prior to The Last Jedi, mission accomplished. I feel like they took all the criticism of TFA about it being a re-make of ANH, and consciously wrote the story to as Kylo stays, kill the past and burn it down. Disney can do whatever they want. They paid billions for the property. Its not like my opinion matters. The movie will be wildly successful, and I will go to see the next installment regardless of how I feel about this one. I just don't think they respected the Star Wars universe effectively which makes a lot of old nerds like me upset.
