Digging out a few advertising posters
« on: November 06, 2014, 08:16:44 PM »
A French poster from the late 19th/early 20th century showing the long lost but most extraordinary Dufayel store. It opened in 1890 and is well worth a quick Google. I think you'll be suitably impressed at the vision of the man - Georges Dufayel - who rose from modest means to enormous wealth and a mansion on the Avenue Champs-Elysées. The poster proved too big to fit it all in the photograph...sadly I hadn't got a step ladder to hand!

I've never sent anything off to a restorer or conservationist before but I think this splendid bicycle poster is going to be first up. It's about 60 inches by 40 inches. No idea whether it's better to have it mounted on linen or paper. In fact trying to research that question is what first drew me to this forum. I have a couple of USA firms in mind so we shall see!

Beautiful!  I love the "Astonishing the Natives" caption.

Linen would be the usual answer for something this size I reckon.

Linen it is then!

Actually Deke, I was particularly taken by that caption too.

Meanwhile, back on the cycling track...

And if wheels ever fail, you could always ride the peacock.  ;D

Good point! Thanks for the comments chaps. That Gladiator poster isn't large though - it's a perfectly formed 25.5 x 19.5 inches. Sadly you can see the effect the original metal hanging bands are having on it. Not sure whether it would devalue the poster to have these removed during the course of restoration? Any thoughts?

Meanwhile, for those who thought tyres couldn't be attractive (and I'm not counting Pirelli calendars)...

...and note the blasted metal rods again!

I love this.  I have spent half of my life in Paris and I have never heard of Georges Dufayel or his store.  Funny how you can be at the top of the world one day and completely unknown the next.  I like how it says at the bottom of the poster: "Fixed prices marked with recognizable numbers."  Were there any numbers that people didn't recognize back then?

Just a few postscripts about the Dufayel department store. These two sites have some worthwhile information and - especially as you are an adopted Parisian gal EatBrie - the second features a photo search for the remains of the original building.

By the way, I've just been looking around your poster website EatBrie. Just extraordinary.  I didn't think there were that many posters in the entire world. You do realise that if Charles Dickens was correct and you end up misbehaving yourself, then 10,000 of said items will be chained to your left leg for eternity? Just a thought.

So is EatBrie conversely a fully paid-up Parisian who has been adopted elsewhere? I must admit to being confused!

Good lord! My sincere apologies EB!!

Now this is what happens when I mix in the company of film aficionados. I made the incorrect assumption that the gender of their avatar snap (if indeed there is one) might be linked to their real gender. As there was no other clue, what is a chap to do? Further to my own defence, I ought to add that my own avatar isn't a million miles away from what I actually look like. Well perhaps the odd ten thousand miles or so.

Now I wonder. Is there a deeply buried part of the forum where members, in Batman-like spirit, have whipped off their disguise and revealed their own true photographic identity?
