Here is something you should think about, Greg, before you invest yourself too much into MPF.  Our hobby is a niche hobby.  A lot of big collectors do not join forums because they don't want other people to know what they own, or simply don't care.  That leaves a few of us, but not that many.  Two forums (APF and NS4) is already a lot.  I don't know how many forums this hobby can sustain.  A lot of our members post on NS4, and I can't imagine them posting on a 3rd forum.  Too time consuming.  Just think about this before you dig deeper.  I think it's one of the reasons MPF has been dead for 2 years.  There just aren't enough collectors.  Or enough collectors interested in sharing.

Did actual membership counts or relative forum activity (i.e. frequency of posting) or advertising revenue come up?

CSM we talked about those and all kinds of other things relevant to operating a forum.  It may seem so on the surface but it's not easy so there is a whole lot to go over.  Heck, talk about hobbies, running forums is a hobby in itself for me.  Oddly enough I'm not a frequent poster though....

...Our hobby is a niche hobby. ... I don't know how many forums this hobby can sustain. ...

Understood... and I knew that going in.  I don't know if Holiday mentioned it to you, but I was already well aware of the fact that there were only a few forums for movie posters.  That's exactly what I was looking for when I contacted Andy years ago (and both Andy and Holiday this year)... to help manage a niche collectors site for a collectible that I have a passion for.

Pick just about any other collectible and there are a plethora of forums that all have just a few members. Not enough in one place to make meaningful use of the knowledge.  I think there's plenty of room for three forums as long as none of the three campaign for the death of any other. There's lots of great history and knowledge over at MPF...  I'd hate to see that go away.

Unfortunately, this forum, and I will talk for Ari when I include NS4, will never campaign for MPF as long as Peanut is at the helm.

Sorry about that.

Been there.  It's one of the complaints at a poker chip forum I run.  Bidders hate the auction posts (at least the ones that are bidding on THAT auction), and sellers love them.  When I say complaints... it's really just an occasional "aww man!" post when two+ forum members are bidding on that item.

Heck, I even get disappointed when I see an auction post for an item I want... but I'd never disallow it.

what poker chip forum is that?
I collect gambling images (I have thousands of posters & lobby cards with this theme) and I wonder if I visited that site

I posted there a couple times & got some people who were pretty pissy at me and all I was doing was putting up a notice about gambling posters for sale. I was given the idea that it was for chips only and posters were skank

A couple of points to add, Greg.

First, many (most?) of us have a membership over at MPF, but seldom log in there.  I probably have looked there maybe twice in the last two years.  You need to ask yourself what you can offer that would entice us back.  Further, what can you do that wouldn't hurt this forum?  We are all pretty happy here, and among friends.

Second, APF and NS4 work in harmony because they look at different niches.  Lots of cross-posting and duplication, but different mambership and different focus.  Need to understand that.

Third, the couple hundred folks that post here are probably the bulk of the internet savvy collector market.  It is a niche.  There are other forums here and there that dabble around the edges.  I and others will generally toss out a response or two and refer back here.  Examples I have worked with include satelliteguys.us in their home theater section and AVSforums.com in the theater builder section.  However, the folks there are mostly looking for cheap images and their focus is the theater, not the poster.

Finally, be aware that there is a third active forum with the MOPO mailing list.  Again a different focus and a different set of players.  MOPO being a mailing list is aimed at folks who just want to receive news, so it is more passive.  It also tends to attract more dealers and some of the higher end collectors that can remain anonymous.

So, that's where I see the situation.  Show us how we can work together and what's in it for us.  Also, need to know we are not buying back into the same old...

Just had a quick look, seems like a poor attempt at our usual Halloween thread...
Which we never did this year.

Blame it on Ted.  He's in charge of that.

?????? I would bet that not 100 people have posted during the life of the forum and would be pleasantly surprised if I was incorrect

That's because we've always had a separation between commercial and personal sales..  we have forums for commercial posts and a Classifieds dedicated to personal sales.  We allow anything casino/gaming related to be bought and sold...  gambling related posters would be perfectly allowed... just not in the open forums.

you can believe I posted it to the correct subforum, although I'm thinking at that time there was just a single forum. goes back 3-4 years

Incorrect again, Rich.  More than 200 members have posted more than 10 times since we started the forum.

I appreciate that post.  I totally understand the differences in focus.  ChipTalk shares a similar relationship with the 'other' big board (thechipboard.com)... they focus on single colelctible chips and ChipTalk.net focuses on 'playable' collectible (and custom made) sets.  But both have a little smidgen of the other focus...  Symbiotic, with lot's of referrals back and forth.  I'll bet that any set of forums will find their own focuses as long as they are allowed to thrive.

re: Show us how we can work together and what's in it for us.  -- That's exactly how I put it to one of the sponsors recently.  Whatever we do (and however we implement) something, first and foremost is that the members come out ahead.  And if it doesn't help the sponsor, or help the site, then refer to rule #1 and see if it should still be done.  usually we can find a win-win-win situation... such as a contest giving away posters....

I have been spending my morning walks putting thought into what we can do to put some energy back into the membership. (too bad life/work get in the way most days).   it would be a much bigger benefit to members if we could get feedback on ... tell me what's wrong and I'd see what could be done to fix it.

APF management might not cotton too well to us doing that here...

Do the numbers in any of the poster forums, I'd hazard a guess that less than 10/15% of the membership in any of those forums actually post regularly or have even posted in the last month and I'd be willing to bet a whole lot less in MPF. So unless you are going to bring in nude dancing girls and free beer not a lot will change that, it's not about getting the members more active it's about getting the hobby more active/widespread - a forum is preaching to the converted.

Of course the flip side to that is the more people in the hobby the greater the demand for the posters the dearer they become...

I bet more people would post here if there were clear instructions on how to register.  It's just not very obvious...

MPF is infested with ads. Four years ago I didn't mind.  Now it's intolerable:

I guess those advertisers are seeing lots of return on their investment, or they wouldn't keep doing it.

I thought Mel was exaggerating since his image is as a guest.  EWent there and signed in.  Just as many ads.  Other forums I frequent have 3 levels of ads.  Many for a guest, some for a member, few for a supporter.
