Some superb posters in this thread!  bed1

Can't believe nobody has posted the Frankie 6S, so I'll do it:

Jon Warren wrote:

[W]e sold the [Royal Theater] collection. We recouped our investment within six months. My investors were extremely happy. They all now liked movie posters very much. Steve Fishler liked them so much he started collecting them. He has amassed quite a collection since that day in Tennessee when we decided to become partners and buy a collection in Canada. His collection includes a little poster we fondly call the Frankenstein six sheet.

How he came to own that six sheet is another story, quite different from the version we have seen on television. The poster was not found in a locked suitcase.

But that's another story. And I'm not at liberty to divulge, unfortunately, for it's a great yarn and spans the globe.

Posting this here, too, with regard to The Mummy US OS that was auctioned back in 1997.

And I just emailed Todd and asked him about the condition of that poster.

TBC.

The Mummy OS that sold for $453K back in 1997 was from the collection of Todd Feiertag, and I dont think his copy was heavily damaged and restored. (I'll email him and ask, for verification). At the time it was auctioned, 2 copies were known to exist, so maybe it was the other copy that needed a lot of restoration. (I seem to remember reading one was found sandwiched under some other posters on a barn wall or something similar, and was heavily damaged due to exposure, moisture etc).

Here's an article from The Deseret News, dated March 2, 1997, after the Sotheby's auction was over, giving more details:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/546423/MUMMY-POSTER-COSTS-A-TREASURE.html

Another copy is also held/housed by The Los Angeles Public Library. It happened to be on display, along with many other vintage OS that they have, when I visited there a handful of years ago.. and to see this in person was stunning and mind blowing.  bed1

The LA Museum copy was certainly known at the time, so not sure why they would say only two known to exist then (and their copy was quite nice). The 3rd copy known at that time of course was the Borst copy, which originally belonged to Bob Burns and can also be seen in It Came From Bob's Basement, when he used it as part of a display. It was also in excellent condition (or Fine condition so Bruce can understand).
The 4th copy that turned up was one which required some moderate/significant restoration, and the before and after pic was posted in the auction catalog when it sold.  There may or may not be a 5th copy now, but at four or even five, it certainly remains a rarity in high demand.

I just heard back from Todd Feiertag, and he said that aside from pin holes in the corners, his copy of The Mummy OS (the 1997 Sotheby's auction copy) was in wonderful condition, with no restoration at all.

For clarity, this insert is printed in B&W - just like the movie!

That's not Realart - It's Universal.
But yes, in 47, only the one-sheets and three sheets were in color, the lobbies, halves, and inserts were duotone.

Thanks, Sean.

How was it that Universal retained this title when so many of their other horror greats had been passed on to Realart by that time?

Actually, none of Universal's horror titles had been sold to Realart at this time (1947).
Realart started operations in 1948, mainly to distribute Universal's entire back catalog (not just the horror pieces) as new Universal-International head William Goetz had made the decision to concentrate on new pictures and ignore their back catalog.

While not a poster, still fitting imagery. According to the website I located this image on, this stereo pair of photos of Lon Chaney as the Phantom was a rejected image.

It's one Ive Never seen before, and as this is one of my all time favorite films, Im always on the lookout for images I havent seen before. Plus, its a very in focus image and almost looks like a bit of a candid shot.  bed1

I wonder if the Phantom's "gargoyle warning device" that's mounted on the wall above Chaney's head, still exists, sitting on some dusty shelf in the Universal prop department. What a great piece of silent film history that would be to have and display.

I wonder if Uncle Forry/4SJ ever saw it?  He certainly saw unimaginable treasures of early Universal.
