Wow... I just finished The Thing from Another World.  What an incredible movie!  After seeing some of the lobbies (which showed The Thing) I was expecting it to be kind of hokey.  I was way off base... it was excellent!  I thought it was a very solid movie with great characters.  Then again, I don't know why I was expecting anything less given that Hawks directed it.  And strong women characters too boot.

Great flick!  Two thumbs way up.

The 1951 THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD...what a picture...
While Christian Nyby is credited as the director, producer Hawks' influence permeates the entire production.
Reportedly, he was so frequently on the set that even James Arness and Kenneth Tobey have actually disagreed on who really directed the movie.
Reminds me of producer Spielberg's influence on Tobe Hooper when Hooper was directing POLTERGEIST.
Glad to hear that Harry's first look at this classic was positive.
IMO, it will always stand the test of time.

I agree with you guys. Great and timeless it is.

Though in HIGHLANDER, Clancy Brown does have that great line to the nuns in church, "Happy Halloween ladies!"
 :)

"Forgive me. I am a worm"

Another great line when Brown picks up the hooker...
Hooker: "Hi, I'm Candy."
Kurgan: "Of course you are."

I saw 'Let Me In' in the theaters and followed it up with 'The Masque of Red Death' at home tonight.  I have heard great things about 'Let Me In' and I will admit, it was really well done.  Good directing, good acting, good score... CGI was ok.  However, it also seemed kind of pointless IMO.  As far as I can remember, it was more or less a shot for shot remake of 'Let the Right One In'... in the future I don't know why I would ever choose to watch this one over the original?  Thoughts from others?  I know some here really liked it...

As for Masque of Red Death... you gotta love Price :)

You just reminded me that I havent seen the Dr Phibes movies in a while. Those are charming.

I watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose very late last night. Not the best movie to be watching so close to 3AM.

Speaking of exorcisms, tonight I plan on watching EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING and DOMINION, the other prequel to the EXORCIST.  I figure it'll be an interesting double-bill -- both from Warners 2005, one by Paul Schrader and the other by Renny Harlin.  Both star Stellan Skarsgard as a younger Father Merrin.  I've seen them both before, but not back-to-back.

Damn Straight!  I still haven't seen the whole thing through and I've always lusted after the paper... it has one of the most beautiful one sheets I've ever seen!

(this is the midget WC which has the same image)

The R42 poster is pretty outstanding in its own right... and is something I might actually be able to afford some day!

Dale's referring to the series based on the Image comic book.  The Karloff version will be shown on TCM on 30 Oct at 8:15 AM CST

So what have you all seen in the last few days?  I watched Scanners yesterday and I watched The Last Man on Earth and Near Dark tonight.

It was excellent though...

Cigarette Burns (what. in. the. f#@k.)

Yeah, it had that effect on me the first time I watched it too.  I never expected to see a Carpenter film as gritty and outside the mainstream as that.  I wonder if thats him without the influence of Hollywood mucky mucks?

So people who like horror movies have "high sensation-seeking" personalities, according to this WP article.

I guess I'm a low sensation seeker. I avoid horror movies because the disturbing scenes "stick in my head."

You will want to avoid Cigarette Burns then Mel.  It is fairly gory in a couple of spots, but I have seen movies that out-gore it by a long shot.  It is more the subject matter.....the whole premise is just disturbing.

I screened it for a group of about 8 people (without having seen it myself) and EVERYONE was creeped out big time.  And of course, everyone was... I wouldn't say pissed at me... but definitely trying to figure out why I would EVER show that to them!  ;D

Thanks for the article Mel.  Now I know why my wife and I are so different!

LOL!  Isn't that the point of a horror film though??  Gore and scares may make you jump, but to really get into your bones and creep you out, well that takes something else (at least for me).  I just hope you didnt have any overly religious folks (or moderately religious types who cant watch a film for films sake) in there for the screening.  In that case, I can see where things might have been on the uncomfortable side.

Either way man, it made me laugh thinking of a bunch of people sitting down to watch that together.......i do apologize though if my recommendation caused you extreme duress. ;D

Had a "The Raven" double bill 34, 63, the other night, Quite the ticket. Watched "The Woman in Black" last night, one of Yvonne's favourite's. Watched "Dawn of the dead" after Mark Gatiss's History of Horror pt3, Documentary on Monday night. After all the censorship of this film ( Dawn ) it was on uncut 140 mins long. How times have changed.
