So I've got this Mick Brownfield litho print from portal, it doesn't have a zipcode on the bottom and all signs point to early portal.

Just wondering if anyone might have any advise about it :)

thanks in advance, I might have trouble with the html in which case i will edit.

****update I did have trouble adding photos. Im going to attempt to put them in the comments. also forgot to mention that when I opened the frame, it wound up being stuck to another mint condition poster by Ruane Manning which i will also add photos of.

welcome1, Keri. and Enjoy the forum and all the good people here.

What exactly is printed on the lower right border of the Marilyn piece? Can you take a pic of that and add it here?

I'm not sure if any of these will help. My phone is being crazy.but i can tell you this. It's pre zip code pre 1963.
Its post portal opening (1954)
Marilyn was famous in the fifty and died in 1962
Then they added zip codes to portals litho 1963
I'm wondering if they never reprinted it due to the subject matter.
I can honestly not find much more about it so far this morning but that's what I've been able to pull together
The number is Sbo59  or sb059

Here's another Mick Brownfield litho, done of Marlon Brando. Also reproduced by Portal with the Corte Madera, CA info, and with no zip code. This one is SB052 in the series. Looks like maybe Brownfield might have done a set of actors?

Great minds think alike...LOL

I also emailed him about 15 min ago...  ;D

When unsure... head to the source.

In looking up a little about him, I see that he was born in London in 1947.

What would the subject matter be, that you think might not have caused this litho to be printed? Nothing is offensive on it. It's like a montage creation of sorts.

Side note: Because Brownfield was born in 1947, he would only have been 16 in 1963, so this litho can't be that early.

Just a total guess here, but I'm thinking this litho (and the others he did of actors in this same series) are from the 1970s or later.

Hopefully, he replies and pinpoints the exact year.

About the subject matter, I mean it's got all the detective stuff on it and she had just died of an overdose or suicide or what have you. I thought it might stir up questions or something.

Another way to help pinpoint, too, is that a good many of the movie poster prints that Portal produced in the 60s and early 70s were are marked with the Sausalito, CA location, too.

When they moved to Corte Madera, CA would be another key, too.  :D

Keri- Mick Brownfield wrote me back!  thumbsup.gif

Here's what he said about when the Monroe and other lithos of his actors' series were done:

"Hi Jeff, they were done in 1980 as a series of film stars who were deceased. The others included James Dean,Judy Garland, W.C. Fields, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart and Marlon Brando. I don't know anything about the printing process.

Very Best wishes
M.B."
