My Propaganda Poster Collection
« on: December 31, 2016, 06:18:10 PM »
I've mostly lurked around here since joining, but with the new year I figured may as well be a bit more active!

I mainly collect propaganda posters, the bulk of my collection being Soviet. However, I also have posters from Germany, China, North Korea, Mexico, the USA, Canada, and more.

I snagged one of my holy grail posters recently, a 1944 work by Viktor Koretsky: Europe Will be Freed! May as well have this be the first poster of the thread! Will be getting it linen backed soon.

Lots of layers of imagery on this one. Europe is represented by a robed woman, shackled with manacles marked by Swastikas and standing amongst blackened ruins. The three broadswords represent the major Allied powers now steadily liberating Europe as the push to Germany continues, with the UK and America from the West and the Soviets from the East. It shows both the Allies unity of purpose, and their division.

Amazing poster!  It's always interesting with the hindsight of knowing the Cold War was to come to see posters like this showing unity between the USSR and Western Allies.

I mainly collect Mexican posters, so I would personally love to see your Mexican propaganda posters if you feel like sharing.

I only have one Mexican poster, and unfortunately I don't have a high quality image of it on hand. Top image is from google, and second one is my poster right after receiving it. I really do need to figure out how to photograph these posters properly...

This one was another one of my holy grails. By Jose Bribiesca, 1942, Mexico for Freedom.

Awesome! That is one fantastic poster. I have been looking for that poster for a while. In fact, I found it for sale online not long ago but the seller had in fact already sold it and forgotten to update his website. What a disappointment!

If you come across another, let me know :)

That Mexican is one of the most powerful posters I have ever seen.
Beautiful.
Thanks for posting it, Desperada.
I look forward to seeing more of what you've got!

Summer of 2015

Glad to hear it! That was probably around the time I first saw it on the website and started hemming and hawing over whether I wanted to plunk down the cash. It was only a few months ago that I decided to go for it. So in some strange way it makes me feel better to know the poster was already in your hands all along :)

By the way, do you have any Spanish Civil War stuff?

Several of the great poster artists from the Republican side fled to Mexico after Franco's victory and became movie poster artists.

Nothing from the Spanish Civil War. I haven't come across anything that has ever really caught my eye yet.

Figured I'd post two more pieces from the collection as I photo stuff.

One of my favorite pieces in the collection. A 1984 Soviet poster with text stating "Love of Peace - The Washington Way". Simple yet powerful, its propaganda at its best.

The next is an American poster aimed at ensuring the populace did not discuss wartime troop movements or secrets. Again, very simple and very powerful.

Someone talked!
Artist: Frederick Siebel, 1942

That Soviet poster is indeed very cool. I hadn't seen that design before.

Simple (but clever) and striking.
