Post by: Crazy Vick on April 27, 2014, 08:05:17 PM
Hi I`m testing the whole photobucket thing.  Let me know if you can see these.  My wife hates me by the way.  I`ve got a few more in the mail.

Thanks!  Let's all take our clothes off!  I've been trying to find more info on the nudist one actually.  I believe it is fairly uncommon.  Anyone specialize in Thierry hates "French Grande"s?

So the wife got me a $100 Groupon discount off framing.  I let her pick the poster, she picked my circa 1950 German documentary film on Canada ("Kanada").  Poster wasn't super expensive, but have only seen one more on ebay and it was folded and in shit shape, so, maybe this is the only unfolded copy around?  Anyway - she really had no idea framing was so expensive.  After they honored their current special (25% off sale) and the $100 groupon it STILL came up to $360 for an A1 size and very basic matting, frame etc.  THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY !!    faint2.gif

I trust these guys and was quite vocal insisting they "do not dry mount" and ensure the whole bit is "100% reversible".  Its all supposed to be UV and conservation materials, yadi yada.

So, in conclusion, my birthday present from my wife COST ME $360 which is pretty fecking ironic.  Should get the poster back in 2 weeks.  Those snap frames looking pretty good right now...

As my BF says...still cheaper than a car..no running cost, just start up cost.  So buy it. Pay it. Enjoy it.

Que?

Some frame stores are very expensive.  Vick said that after the 25% discount and the $100 coupon, the frame was $360.  Without the discounts it would have cost about $600!  :o

I looked online and found this in less than a minute.  It's probably not museum grade UV acrylic, like Acrylite OP-3, but if the frame store doesn't tell you the specific brand and type, there's a good probability that it's not museum grade, either.

Wow... i didnt do the calcs just because I didnt want to see the regular, non-discounted price. I would certainly have felt like  faint2.gif, too Vic, but Im sure it will look great, when done.

Just out of curiosity, who was the framer that you went to (that offered this Groupon offer?)

Yes Neo. Good point. You have to ask for museum frames or they might as well charge you a fortune for plastic!

Over here price of US OS museum etc and nice frame (say not standard black) is aroun £180 and that is the cheapest.

Vick, gather next time you might want a $550 coupon discount!

£180 and that is the cheapest.

Wow.  I can't imagine why it's that much more expensive at every frame store in the UK.  Not to be braggadocious, but my one sheet frames, that are pretty nice wood frames, with OP-3, and acid-free backing, cost about $100.

I got a few quotes from frame shops around here, and 2 of the places' quotes, for the same moldings and everything, were much more expensive than the local shop I ended up buying from.  It's wise to shop around.  8)

We had a look on the internet. And sure you might find it cheaper in the UK. But when I shopped around in London that was the cheapest locally. Custom made. Not bought over the Internet.

But you are right Neo. Best to shop around. I will have another look again. They are flipping expensive.

Rosa, you are giving the cheapest price (180 GBP) for a custom made frame, right? If so, custom made frames (or custom made anything) will always be a premium.  ;)

Any frame that you have made to a specific size, frame style, etc., including the one I mentioned above for $60, is "custom made."  If you want a really fancy molding, matting, museum UV acrylic, etc., that stuff will surely be more $.

Vick was saying that the one he got was "very basic matting, framing, etc.," and I'm always shocked at how much some frame shops charge people.  I just figured I'd throw my $0.02, regarding shopping around for the best prices from local shops and/or online.

Yes Jeff.  Custom made. I am just a bit hesitant to frame some of my posters myself. If anyone in the UK or London can recommend a cheaper framer or a solid online store then that would be great!

@ Brandon. .  your 60p very helpful ! It really is good to be reminded that you can always find it cheaper elsewhere. .yessss sir thumbsup.gif

My thought was that certain, more standard sizes are available to purchase (27x40, 22x28 etc) and can be bought "off the shelf," or are even available from places that may also offer poster size frames and so are not "custom made" in that sense.

And as you said, Brandon, doing the research will often pay off, as these types of frames can come with UV plexi and acid free backing boards or foam core.  ;)

It's really easy to just have a frame shop chop the moldings, cut the acrylic and foam, and then just hand it to you to put the poster, print, or whatever in.  If you get wood moldings, you just need a point driver, and points, I recommend flexible points, as they don't put too much pressure on the back, and you can just bend them and swap out the piece in the frame.  You also don't have to worry about the framer messing up your stuff this way.  Don't ask me how I know what that's like.

You're welcome.  You can call me the Frame Price Police.

Thanks all.  The place I had to go to would not have been my first choice but alas I had that Groupon (thanks honey)

http://www.wallspacegallery.ca/services/#/framing/

The original price was $536.  Minus 25% and minus $100 came up to $307 but need to add an awesome 15% in Canadian so $360.  I`ve been trying to wrap nty head around it, my mechanic charges $80 an hour, you think they make more than my mechanic?  Would custom making a German A1 size frame take more than 2 hours (or $160)...?  Even three hours would be lets say $225 in labour...and thats not even half the $536!  I don't get it. What I do know though is that it better look MINT when its done, I tell ya if there's even one human hair behind that glass they are redoing the whole thing...

I am the same way.  You can have frames, mats, etc. cut to size by a frame shop.  Sometimes I have saved money getting UV plexiglass from a plastics supply business instead of a framer, and getting archival backing board from an art supply store.

I am paranoid enough that I want to be the one to actually put my poster into the frame.  It's the only way to be sure a framer won't use some crazy adhesive, roughly handle the poster, etc.

This is great.  My daughter likes to go into the basement just to look at my posters (although some are clearly not so appropriate ;/).  We sit on the floor together in the middle of the room and she points to each one on the wall and says "Daddy poster look" over and over.  It's fun and maybe it means there's hope for the collection in the future afterall

Getting ready to prep some din-din?

Haha thanks.  Ya wife is on the phone prepping some dinner... can a life get any better (she lives to cook - its a Quebec thing) I took the pics like that to show they were hung one a higher level which looks awesome, when you're upstairs its really striking. Of course they're not the most expensive or sought after posters, but I like them.  And besides I can change them pretty easy.  Looks even better in person.  Cant wait to put up more.

The frames on those high walls really show those posters off well, Vick.  thumbup

Is that area like a foyer or something similar?

Title: Re: Crazy Vick`s Crazy April
Post by: Crazy Vick on November 12, 2014, 02:00:20 PM
I guess you could call it that, although its not very big...front entrance on one side, stairs (up and down) on the other.

I didn't even need any backing on the posters, what with the 3 inlays that are provided.  I suspect i will for the g r a n d e though.

Anyways if any of you arent displaying your posters for lack of suitable and (relatively) inexpensive framing options, definitely check out Spotlight displays!

Yes, great use of wall space Vick. How are those frames fixed though? My worry would be that if one should fall it could potentially cause great harm to a child.

They are screwed in real tight - the half sheet and insert have 4 screws and wall anchors while the OS has 8 of them. I am completely confident they are not going anywhere ... still, that is a valid concern.  I'll be changing the posters every few months so will definitely check to make sure the system is still sound.

The fact that there is no backing board i figure helps a lot too for two reasons, one being that there is less weight altogether and second - the whole things is nice and snug against the wall and not protruding out (so less gravitational pull i figure)  I was also impressed with the snapping sides - almost like a mousetrap.  When you snap a side shut watch your fingers, its very firm and tight, so unlikely the snap sides would ever open by itself.

I'm thinking all this good PR for SD should equate to more discounts in the future.... ;)

Here's one I am stoked to get in the mail today.  A Howard Chandler Christy 30x40 WW1 which I had backed and restored - my first foray into the whole exercise.  I got a good deal on the original which needed some work on the bottom corners and sides, some tape removal (see first pic).  The colors were so good overall going through it was a no-brainer.  bed1

Never really understood the rush to get items sent for restoration back in one's grubby hands.  Unless one is looking for a quick flip what is the concern?

Obviously they should be returned in a respectable amount of time (there are of course horror stories of posters not coming back or not even being worked on for months and months) but really if another week or two in getting the poster back means much more careful, skilled and thorough restoration work those are timelines I can live with!

Bottom line essentially - keep my poster(s) for whatever amount of time it will require (within reason) to send me back THE BEST finished product.

You cannot put a strict timeline on artistry in my opinion...
Title: Re: Crazy Vick`s Crazy April
Post by: erik1925 on May 08, 2015, 12:20:15 PM
Of course, Chris.

I agree here with you totally. The key phrase in your comment is within reason. Yes, one wants a restorer to take all of the time he/she needs to provide the best results possible, but we have also read or heard the stories, where months and months can go by, without any word, any update and any poster, yet when all is said and done, the work is less than par, let alone sometimes painfully dreadful (siting work/examples done by, Mr Posterfix, as but one example).

Time and artistry don't often go hand in hand. And in that regard, there can then be real and genuine concern, ofttimes.

Thank you sir.  I'm still quite happy with the frames and have been wanting to put some more up... just not the fact that they are sold in USD!  Actually someone put up an emoticon on another post today which pretty much sums up what the USD is doing to my currency these days.. Love those primarily utilitarian items getting a new life decades later with that patina look. I also found an old wooden shoe-shiners box in the garbage this week... gotta be from the 1940s too.  In pretty good condition with the owners initials stenciled on the side.  No shame whatsoever rescuing it from the trash!

Speaking of purple silkscreens... I found this cool litho poster from 1983 at a local estate sale. A super nice print job - actually found a few old tech company posters from 1980s.  I don't know if they are worth anything, as they aren't Apple/Mac related.  Dont know if you Californians know that my hometown Ottawa was known as "Silicon Valley North" for many a year in the 90s.  Of course perhaps not of interest to most (not movie-related) but shiite its my thread (literally it has my name on it)   thumbsup.gif

Very nice!  And, if you are going to watch "THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE" (nice poster there as well, by the way), you really need to watch the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" version.https://youtu.be/cdfUkrbNvwA (https://youtu.be/cdfUkrbNvwA) (or a selection of scenes: https://youtu.be/QdCaYEffB0Q (https://youtu.be/QdCaYEffB0Q)).

Congrats!

Nice, CV.  Really like the second one with the sites of Copenhagen, including the famous Little Mermaid statue, etc.

Didn't I read somewhere the Little Mermaid statue was beheaded by vandals several years ago? The only thing about the Copenhagen poster I wish they had included was a shot of Reptilicus rampaging through. Beyond that it's perfect!!!! :-)

Thanks all.  I found these locally for next to nothing so i was pretty psyched. The Wonderful Copenhagen poster I haven't been able to find any info about, i was hoping that bit about the vandalism MAGG would help me date the poster, but according to wikipedia the "statue has been damaged and defaced many times since the mid-1960s but has been restored each time."  The other one is original from the 70s but now i suspect it might be a later print.

Hard to get some me time on the computer at home or at work these days... everyone is sick as hell here (except for the newborn for some mysterious reason), no one sleeps, asked to perform superhuman feats at work, etc, just dandy thankyouverymcuh.  At least its not snowing.   faint2.gif

yup second daughter born 2 weeks ago.  Pretty fucking cute actually.   As for me, I am burnt out.  Kaput.

My taking pictures of those two posters required 2 hours of planning and 45 minutes of negotiating with my wife so I'd have 20 minutes to do so.  Well, two minutes for the crappy pictures (as you can tell) and another 18 just feckin around in the basement so i wouldn't have to go back up...   thumbsup.gif

Found these all in an old house here in town... The Bath one Ted is just a bit larger than a belgium, it is a great image, I don't even recall cartoon images here like that in 1985
I thought it was Bath, Ontario about 2 hrs from here but its in the UK accross the pond oddly enough

You need to up the ante do you know how many banana warmers are lying around here...

Love finding these random 80s posters and its like finding stuff from the 1880s...  i get all excited explaining to people (my wife) "It's from 1983 do you realize how old that is?"

correct eagle eye, from an estate sale.  they're actually a dozen or so 1972 campaign posters for Robert Stanfield, "the greatest prime minister Canada never had" after he lost the election to Trudeau. Here's a few for those who are still reading this post...Amazing the amount of WRITING on the posters, like people today would ACTUALLY have time to stop and READ stuff like PARAGRAPHS

Really happy to finally get this 1960 UK quad for the Subterraneans, ever since missing out on the copy EMP auctioned last year. Turns out it was quite a search to find from what I gather the only copy available out there right now (hopefully this isn't where my UK friends tell me how common it is across the pond!) It wasn't cheap but I did get the commonwealth discount from the most friendly and excellent Paul over at movieposterstudio.

Couldn't tell ya! But the poster captures the vibe as I remember reading a lot ofJack Kerouac back in my university days...  This was my favorite book, and the UK quad is the one poster that's captured the "scene".  And this was from 1960 to boot!  Way groovy and way ahead of its time.

Canadians were the most successful on D-Day. They landed on Juno Beach, faced severe loses - they were reduced to 1/3 I think but somehow managed to keep the troops moving , took the Beach and kept moving inland reaching their destination and actually going  further than anybody else. I think they were the only ones that reached their destination on D day. They had orders to stop and wait for the others! I would be proud to display this poster myself! Go Canada!

Thanks all...MAGG so you know there's this little ebay idiotsyncracy whereby if you aren't selling the item internationally, not only are international ebayers (i.e. ebay.ca, ebay.dk..) prevented from bidding, they can't even send a message to the seller advising him to review his ad (I've posted about this before)  Very frustrating because in 90% of the cases, they have no problem selling/shipping internationally, they just listed wrong

This is a repro of a 1965 London Transit poster by Andrew Hall, but a very old one...must be late 60s or early 70s.  Anyways, just an outstanding poster I am giddy over.
If I had to put a value on it, I would say ten thousand USD, easy.  Best offers welcomed.

Ted would appreciate these, wherever he is.   :'(

They are from Yukon Province in Northwest Canada.  I haven't been to the Klondike but its certainly on my bucket list.  The first 2 advertise the Yukon Quest which is a grueling 1,000 mile dogsled race through Alaska all the way to Whitehorse, Yukon.  They are all lithoed on thicker stock paper with excellent aboriginal art.  Knowing what the conditions are like up north - inherently anti-paper - pretty cool to have these with me on the other side of the country in near mint condition.

Ahh...there's nothing quite like a crazy April in July!  Hey Crazy Vick!  No worries about your non-poster additions. I've posted a few non-poster items on my page (3D glasses, a witch deflector, towels etc.). But YOUR additions, va-va-Va-VOOM! You can't go wrong with Betty Paige..but the dazzling Blue Bulleteer (!?!), although I've never heard of her, what an eye-catcher!

I like your new posters too. The top one especially stands out. It reminds me of the SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND animated Beatles movie from the 60s. Well done!

I miss Dave Stevens' pin-up work and this Bettie Page pose is one of my favorites.
Here's other Stevens work on my blog: http://brudesworld.tumblr.com/tagged/dave%20stevens (http://brudesworld.tumblr.com/tagged/dave%20stevens)
The Blue Bulleteer is a stunner, too.
I was never a big AC Comics fan, but some of their characters were memorable.
Keep up the great work... its difficult, but someone's gotta do it.

thanks all!. It is very Sgt. Pepperish MAGG now that you pointed it out!  I'd been trying to get my hands on those for a while and International Poster Gallery accepted an offer I made on the three (I was pleasantly surprised)

Was looking at your blog Ted - you have been busy!  Lots to take in there.  Very cool  thumbsup.gif

The Blue Bulleteer, aka Nightveil, is a bit of a mystery. According to wikipedia she is an adaptation of Phantom Lady, from the Golden age of comics in the 40s. Ther eis a lame ass trailer for Blue Bulletteer: Captured by the Cloak  https://vimeo.com/44957608

well as the world disintegrates around us I`m doing my part this afternoon sharing more poster photos oblivious to it all  thumbsup.gif

Back in 2010, they ran a showing of Romero`s Night of the Living Dead at an old theatre still kicking in the city.  They played the original 35 mm print however the soundtrack was provided by local actors, musicians and sound effects specialists who were gathered below the screen to voice the film.  Where I was in March 2010 god only knows but cool that I have this probably scarce (see valuable) relic from the event.  Its exactly 27 x 40 too!

Haven't posted here in a while.  Some US and Canadian goodies picked up recently.  The first a WW2 difficult to find poster features a German Nazi war plane engulfed in flames on its way to crashing to the ground.

Vick does your 3sh section have the NSS paragraph and NSS number on the lower right corner like the OS does?

And I wonder why all the text on the 3sh would be only in black, when several colors were used for the OS text?  hmmm.gif

And the text in the lower left is also different. It reads more than just "Monte Walsh-3 sheet." And there is a lot more "head room" (blank space) between the top of the head of the drawn figure and the top edge of the sheet on the B/W piece.

Title: Re: Crazy Vick`s Crazy April

Just a total guess here, as we dont know yet if Vick's piece has the NSS info and number on the right corner.. but if it's not there, could this maybe have been some local piece that was done? Or a later, local RR?  dontknow.gif

Here's another difference from the full 3 sheet. The complete copy has NO GP ratings box, yet Vick's section does (and so does the US OS).

Plus the fact that Vick has 3 copies and all are just this bottom section. That seems curious, too.

And what if the top portions were never printed and, instead, they were issued like this to begin with. Hmmm. Gotta love the mystery, that's for sure.  thumbsup.gif

Thanks guys.  It doesn't have NSS info or anything else in the bottom right corner.  Its also on thicker paper it seems - better quality.  It actually looks better in person, hard to explain given that its only a B+W poster! It could very well be something local as the collector I got it from had sourced most of his posters from the local exchange.  In any case what we can surmise is that its extremely rare and thus very valuable.  Did I mention I had one for sale?   devil 2

What's interesting on this is to see the "EN SONORAMA!" text in a basic Cinerama kind of imagery, with the letters in the boxes. More "borrowed or ripping off" of a design element?  whistle.gif

I didnt know if there was also some kind of small marks (printer, etc) that also ID'd them in some way. I agree, it's cool.  The Burnt Evidence almost reminds me of a wood block print, and the stark color contrast is really neat, too.

Vick, is your poster a possible RR poster for this 1972 live action TV series?:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068243/releaseinfo?ref_=ttco_ql_2

Looking at imdb, it was re-released theatrically in France, in 1975. And I noticed that your poster also has no credits, which could also be a clue.  sherlockholmes.gif

Here's one I am stoked to get in the mail today.  A Howard Chandler Christy 30x40 WW1 which I had backed and restored - my first foray into the whole exercise.  I got a good deal on the original which needed some work on the bottom corners and sides, some tape removal (see first pic).  The colors were so good overall going through it was a no-brainer.  bed1

not posters but my second passion (after beer) for about 6 months has been vintage turntables and vinyl.  NOTHING NEW just vintage hardware, awesome huge Ditton celestion speakers, a few early 80s turntables particularly my Sony PS X600 picture here... vintage LPs jazz, reggae, few hundreds 45s etc. Love it.
Here are a few movie related LPs. Ok so Moana is not vintage although its been played a thousand times it might as well be.

I collect all kinds including special posters....i
recently inherited about 700 or so dvd posters from early 2000s.... these are some of the good ones, and a few real nice ones from disney and othermajor titles (harry potter, matrix etc) I will bundle up to sell. The remaining 600 or so use for xmas wrapping paper...
They are nice and almost 1sheet size...any interest in dvd posters out there?

FINALLY found a copy of this French 1P for Je suis une vicieuse by Belinsky.  NOT an easy poster to find.

I missed an opportunity to buy this in 2013 when i started collecting and never saw another one for sale.  I finally came across it from a seller in France it was his only copy but in super shape.  Not sure why I've been obsessed with finding this for the last 5 years (yes I do).  Enjoy.

Here's another recent one, a Canadian one sheet for the 1963 Whip & the Flesh (or the Whip and the Body its original title) with Christopher Lee.
Emovie sold one in 2012 but it was mislabeled as a US 1sh.

Great red color on this, Vick. Congrats on the pickup.

Just curious.. without any production credits, director credit (aside from the 2 actors' names) or studio name / logo printed on the poster, is this a first release? Or maybe a later RR poster?

Thanks all.  The LALD 3 sheet is actually a local find - it has a censor stamp from the Ontario Board of Censors.  I actually thought that particular censor stamp wasn't used until the 80s so nice to find out it was used in the early 70s even.

My wife and I were zoned out watching the tube on Friday and came across Pulp Ficton and ended up watching most of it.  To my surprise (and coincidentally) the Motorcycle Gang one appears in the flick!  Its a somewhat scarce poster especially the 3 sheet.  This is the scene where vincent vega takes marcellus' wife to jack rabbit slims... such a cool scene and movie to boot.  Guess Tarantino likes the poster too!   thumbsup.gif

Picked this up, an original Canadian one sheet for the 1951 Bogart film The Enforcer.  It was printed for French Canadians by an anglophone printer, as they obviously got the pronoun wrong (should be LA femme not LE femme....)

Nice litho... never folder in very good shape aside from the tear. I don't think its a RR given it was with several 1949-1951 posters.  Am I dreaming or did Matt flash one on this site in the past?

Crazy Vic....so glad to see you posting again. It's been a while. That Bogart is actually quite nice (tear and masculine "Le" aside... Actually I LIKE the "Le" mistake). Congratulations.
Thanks!  Pretty happy though I'm having a hard time putting a value on it, other than "priceless".  Maybe Dale or Bruce might have an idea?

I picked up several others like this (silkscreens) this fall.  I also found several jazz and Beatles LPs in the trash last week behind a building in a very seedy part of town...the top and bottom ones were toast but the best records were sandwiched in the middle of the pile thus protected from the wet snow.

I had zero expectations at the outset of the pandemic but several recent picks up have made this year a pretty memorable one. thumbsup.gif

Great to hear. Congratulations.  Sounds like you'll have something to post for the annual Favorite Purchases of the year thing. I look forward to seeing them.

Not exactly.  Just enough curiosity to realize two huge stacks of foot-by-foot squares behind a store might be worth pulling over.  A few hundred bucks in free records and saving them from the landfill...evidently it was the right call.

Happy to send you a few LPs DinDin!   That Serbian techno shit is getting to you - clearly!  thumbsup.gif

And what's with you frequenting the back of buildings in the seedy parts of towns? You and Lehtmahne's mom - honestly!

I also picked up about 25 storyboards from the estate of a canadian film producer.  These are all film concepts that may or may not have been pitched but evidently never made it to the big screen.

Crazy Vick!!! Awesome stuff there. I especially love THE SMITHS poster (for such a great album). I also really dig HOUSE OF BLACKMAIL and RABID GRANNIES...and the storyboards. Fascinating! Well done, sir!

Hi Vick!

Was that the first Cineplex brand theatre in 1982 in the U.S.?  I can remember theatres with more than one screen much earlier than 1982, though wasn't sure what is defined as a Cineplex.  Though, hard to beat the old movie grand palaces with balconies, huge screens etc.  My best, Okie
