Title: Posters in films and television - a game
Post by: Through the Stones on April 18, 2013, 11:56:00 PM
I thought it would be fun to start collecting screen shots of posters seen in films or television shows a few months ago and then post them here to see if the elite could identify them!  Just a different and fun way to talk about the hobby and the films we all love!  Working at Starz and watching a thousand films has afforded me a small collection so far so I'll post the first one.  Forgive the iPhone picture of my work monitor but it's the best I can do...

Name the poster, size and one unique fact about it.  Bonus points if you can name the film this screen shot is from...

I have a number of such images and I've been posting them to the MoviePosterBid.com page on Facebook

I'm sure this scene from Fritz Lang's "Spione" from 1928 is everyone's favorite

Why is "MoviePosterBid.com" put on all the retro images, which are likely someone else photos?

Steve, a great percentage of the photos I post are from my own scans, or like this one, my own screen captures and the logo is there to promote my page..

I was taking into account that once there are more, the price will drop.  If we find 300 more, I might be able to afford one :P

Not too challenging and somewhat less valuable than the above but still a classic poster image... in it's entirety;

Cinderfella, three sheet... trimmed??? That's all I've got!

I posted the three sheet below (walterfilm.com) - looks trimmed to me!  This screen shot is from The Ladies Man (1961 - image by moviepostershop.com), Mr. Jerry Lewis's next film after Cinderfella during his reign at Paramount.  Interestingly enough, according to a Jerry Lewis documentary we produced here, this is the only movie poster art ever that Norman Rockwell was commissioned to do or accepted (have not confirmed personally).

A few other cool tidbits about this movie, because Jerry Lewis was having difficulty directing himself coupled with his want to see what he was doing in relation to the camera, he strapped a video camera to the film camera so he could review his performance before moving on to the next shot, in essence, creating video assist which is pretty much standard for every film you see today.  When you see the behind the scenes and the director is sitting behind a TV screen yelling action and cut, that's video assist.

The 'dollhouse set' was the largest ever built at the time (Rear Window being one of the largest I can think of back then).  It took up two entire Paramount sound stages and included over 40 separate rooms that could be filmed in.

Another screen shot with Jerry Lewis in it... two Jerry Lewis' at the same time!

Woa!  Jerry Lewis himself has lied!!  Or was just wrong...  thanks for correcting Bruce!

GemGem - That Brazil poster is sweet.  Loved the Fisher King AND Brazil.  If you ever get a chance to watch the Criterion version of Brazil, it has three different version of the film and some great behind the scenes stuff.

Yes!  What a horribly awesome movie.   ;D  Watching Craig T. Nelson doing Kung Fu is pretty hilarious too.  It's funny because it was produced by Joel Silver so I dare anyone to go more than five minutes through this movie and not see someone from Predator, Die Hard or Lethal Weapon in it.

Think those are wildings for Predator?

Well as I'm a huge Nouvelle Vague fan it only seems right to add a few examples of how Godard used to use posters in his films:

Vivre sa Vie in Le Mepris

Le Petit Soldat in Pierrot le Fou

and seeing the fact I just recently got this poster... Vivre sa Vie in Two or Three Things I Know About Her.

There's a bunch more stuff at this website:http://www.thecinetourist.net/new-wave-films-in-new-wave-films.html (http://www.thecinetourist.net/new-wave-films-in-new-wave-films.html)

Okay, this weeks entry is an easy one for poster identification but... name the posters and film... bonus points if you can also point out one eerie poster fact about this movie!

The skeletons that emerge from the swimming pool while Diane searches for help are actual skeletons. JoBeth Williams did not know this until after the scene was shot.
Title: Re: Posters in films and television - a game
Post by: Through the Stones on May 04, 2013, 01:54:31 AM
Nice fact rdavey!  I had also heard that the scene of Heather O'Rourke holding on to the bed and screaming when the closet is sucking everything in is the only take.  She was so terrified that Steven Spielberg promised that she would never have to do that again so what we see on screen is her being genuinely terrified of the stunt and everything going on all around her.

So, yes, the film - Poltergeist (1982)
The poster in question, there are two - obviously the Star Wars Style A folded one sheet but also the Alien poster by the closet door (thinking it's a commercial poster).

The eerie poster fact is Robbie has a poster in his room for Superbowl XXII (you can see it in the night shot below next to Star wars), which would not take place for another six years and Heather O'Rourke died the day after Superbowl Sunday of 1988 of intestinal issues.    :(

I just saw The Blob (1958) for the first time.  Guess what (fictional) movie is playing in the famous scene where people are running from the theater?

"The Vampire and The Robot"

It looks like a black snipe over a 40x60 Forbidden Planet!  Interesting choice given that FP was only 2 years old at the time.

Just saw another one. Not sure if it's possible to do a screen grab with my "Lost Boys" blu ray, but when David's gang is showing Michael around their hideout there is a "Munsters Go Home" poster in the background.

Also, Max runs a video store and I've already seen a big European Vacation standee and a smaller Goonies (also a Donner movie) table top display.

Not from a TV show or film, but a B/W (i didnt want to start a new thread for this one image) still shot in the 1960's at Don Post studios. Included in the shot are Don Post, Verne Langdon, Tor Johnson (2nd from right) and Forrest Ackerman. What caught my eye, tho, (aside from the great, vintage Don Post masks), was the Dracula piece on the wall- left side of photo.

It may just be a commercial print of some kind, but near the bottom it says Palace. It reminds me of the later, RR 3 sheet artwork.

Cool Dracula poster!

I spotted a few more in Dead Alive (aka Braindead) -- Lionel has Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Jungle Moon Men daybills hanging on the wall of his room.

Wish I knew how to get screen shots from blu-rays....

A little side detail caught my eye in this screen grab. It was the block number on the street sign, indicating that drug store was on the 10600 block of Hollywood Blvd.

That block is actually up in the Hwd Hills, north of Sunset Blvd. In that area, Hwd Blvd snakes and winds its way, and is residential. Here's what the 10600 block actually looks like:

From Savages.
Had remembered this from when I saw it in the theater, but never had a chance to screen-shot it until now.
Besides the obvious two, also note the Black Cat window card on the side wall.
Thought I had remembered seeing a POTO one-sheet in this film somewhere also, but didn't see it when I was fast forwarding through everything.

Agreed, and a 3 sheet to boot!  Okie

Don't think it is a 3 sheet Okie
This is the 3 sheet (taken from Bright Lights)

I think they blew up the 1 sheet which might explain the credits ???

I don't have screencaps but posters were also seen in

SUMMER OF "42 - the kids are waiting outside a theatre and 1-sheets for, if memory serves, The Corn Is Green and Manpower can be seen hanging on a wall.

FADE TO BLACK - Dennis Christopher as a twisted movie buff who works in a NSS type film exchange. Naturally posters are all over the place.

GET SHORTY - Gene Hackman's office has several altered 1-sheets displayed.

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH - Right before the iconic skirt-blowing scene, Marilyn and Tom Ewell emerge from a theatre showing CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. I think there is a quick glimpse of the 1-sheet.

CINEMA PARADISO - posters for several Italian films are scene throughout the film. The projectionist's booth has a horizontal CASABLANCA poster on the wall.

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM - Woody Allen's apartment is a virtual shrine to Humphrey Bogart with original and reissue 1-sheets, inserts, lobby cards, 22x28's covering the walls. The capper is the original 6-sheet for ACROSS THE PACIFIC hanging on his bedroom wall.

Any kind of material (posters or stills from other movie or studios, songs, even products seen a shot, -- like a can of Coke or something seen siting on a table or counter) -- have to be given credit in the end crawl. ;)

Oh, yeah. And remember the film was made at the height of Bogiemania in the early 70's so these posters weren't easy to find. I would guess he has maybe, in today's dollars, close to 1/2 a million dollars in rare paper hanging on those walls? And that Across The Pacific 6-sheet to my knowledge has never been offered for sale or auction anywhere. And it looks like it's in incredible condition.

Ok, a re-release one-sheet and an insert.  Still seems to be several hundred KKKK short. There aren't 400 one thousand dollar posters hanging on the walls.

The Smithsonian channel had a history of Tokyo documentary and during the segment on rebuilding after the great Kanto earthquake (where more than 60% of the population was left homeless), they talked about how Tokyo quickly adopted Western fashion and entertainment - showing this photo.

I know the movie is lost, and while the poster wouldn't have great value I've also never seen a copy before.

Hey, Okie. If you look at the blow up of the I CONFESS scene, you can clearly see the tag line on THE ENFORCER 3-sheet was painted over on the upper right side of the poster.

"If you're smart you'll come down. If you're dumb you'll be dead."

THE ENFORCER is well worth checking out, if you've never seen it. Under appreciated Bogie for sure. The film is credited as being directed by Bretaigne Windust but when he got sick and had to drop out, Raoul Walsh stepped in to finish it, uncredited of course. There are several scenes that only Walsh could have filmed in that certain way he had.

Cool BLACK CAT poster image grab, redman.

But that poster is not for the 1934 horror film, which starred Karloff & Lugosi.

This poster is for the 1941 comedy-horror flicker which starred Basil Rathbone, Anne Gwynne, Bela Lugosi & Broderick Crawford.   cheers

hi yes it'll be original art but i called it a prop as the play was part of the film only, not real life, and so it was just created for the film if that makes sense. zero chance of finding it  ;D
funnily enough original art for the actual film sold yesterday

Not sure I follow Redman, the Vertigo poster was brought in by the film director, put up on the wall for decoration for this film shoot. Vertigo up on the wall in a 1976 film doesn't mean it was screened in 1976, its just a prop in that film studio room (it's not a real room). That poster and the others look real to me, in part because of the folds, and joins (3 sheet)
Title: Re: Posters in films and television - a game
Post by: redman on March 09, 2020, 08:01:55 PM
^i meant that Vertigo was off the radar then, now everyone says its number 1 of all time but you could very rarely even see it then, so i couldn't imagine it being a copy if that makes sense. amazing to see it just flung on the wall like that ;D

^1939 recruitment poster
from V&A: 'This early recruitment poster for the Auxilery Territorial Service (A.T.S) aimed to show how women could be just as much a part of the military war effort as men. The A.T.S. was the women's branch of the British Army. This female soldier is dressed in military uniform and her marching steps are echoed in the column of male soldiers marching in line behind. In reality, at the start of the war A.T.S members were mainly employed as cooks, cleaners and secretaries as they were banned from battle. Later in the war, members of the ATS were called on as radar operators and to form part of anti-aircraft crews.'

for some reason i've always thought it was about a motorbike - turns out it's about a jet fighter  Doh.gif
i've not seen it but i'm sure i've read that it is terrible

here are the box office numbers:
Blade Runner $41.5 million (budget $28 million)
Firefox $46.71 million (budget $18 million)
Tron $50 million (budget $17 million)
Porky's $106 million (budget $4-5 million)
*figures do not inc worldwide*

Porky's must have made a stack on the home video rental market a year or so later as well

Columbo - How to Dial a Murder (1978)

I remember this episode and the Rosebud sled.  If I recall, there were 3 of them made and Spielberg now owns one.  Falk and Spielberg were very close.  Spielberg directed him in the first episode of the first season of Columbo, Murder by the Book, and one of the later episodes, the one with the robot, had the main child genius character named after Spielberg.  I wonder if this is the sled Spielberg now owns.

i think the rosebud sledge is a prop - there was a scene outside with fake citizen kane gates so i would presume it was a homage

i remember seeing a killing in a columbo episode that was filmed a bit different and saw it was directed by spielberg

There was a lot of security and staff! It was the Denver episode of the new series. It was fun to hang out on set. I quickly realized how scripted the entire show is 😂

How about posters in a magazine.

I don't want to start a thread just for that, but it's always fun to go to a bookstore, open a magazine and see a poster you own in it, even if it's a terrible picture haha.

On the Morgan Stewart image, looks like tacks, tape, and those top sliding poster hangers were used. Ah, our young and innocent poster displaying days remembered!  I remember going to old conventions where posters were for sale like that.  Okie
