Title: Wilding posters
Post by: Charlie on May 12, 2012, 12:35:28 AM
Snapped some pictures of the Wildings at that I was talking about:

Notice the textures.  Also found out that the store doesn't necessarily put these up nor have bundles of posters.  In fact one other place I found told me that somebody comes and stocks the racks nd puts the posters up. Also had a thought the other day that those Harry Potter Character posters the Bruce auctioned off may have been something like these...

Same reason as why you Brits insist on using a comma as a decimal point.

Same reason as why you Brits insist on using a comma as a decimal point.

 ( I don't understand this remark...????  )

We don't use a comma, we use a decimal Point....?  We only use a comma if we are talking over the hundreds....E.G.   £1,000.43   Comma's and Decimal points...the British way.

I think I've seen Euro's done with commas instead of full stop (decimal point), like  €10,00

Sigh.

This would all be so much easier if the rest of you lot would simply accept our over-bearing hegemony, spelling, and freedom fries, and begin speaking proper American at all times.  After inventing the interwebs, sound film, and deep fried butter, it's the least you could do.

That said, I can't believe how out of touch with films I've become.  Never heard of "Battleship," but it sure looks pretty cool.

We don't believe in Euros, it's just not British... ;)

And us Brits invented most things inc sound films and the interweb... :D

In England we only tend to say the day, so if asked what todays date is we would just say the 12th assuming people know the month...

But if your looking back at date's it would be 12.5.12 all in order starting with the smallest...why go middle, down and up...?

The iso date you use is much better than the mixed up version...

We do it backwards. The comma for decimals and the point for the thousands. E.G.   $1.000,43  :)

Seems everyone has "a guy".  Mine is a wilding guy.  I see a poster on a construction site that I like and he delivers.

Wildings should have their own thread, since they are sometimes unique posters and quite rare (once they're gone, they're gone).  All the posters are single sided and 48x70in (bus shelter size).

Here are a few.  Next week, I'll add Batman Vs Superman, which is made of 3 posters.

The Walk (6 posters)

I jog a lot, all around my neighborhood, and those guys are really hard to spot when driving at night.  So I was finishing my usual 6 mile jog, I was all sweaty and gross, and I spotted this little Mexican guy at a street corner.  I can't remember what he was putting up, but I asked for a copy and I got it.  He was a little scared, I think.  This sweaty dude in a nice neighborhood asking for posters.  The hard part was to get his phone number.  He could lose his job.  I insisted and he caved.  I felt like an idiot, but I missed on so many posters I wanted, I wasn't going to let him go.  After that, it was just a matter of trust.  Now I just send him pictures of what I want, like the 2 I recently posted, and within a week, voila... he gives me a call when he's in the neighborhood and I pick it up from him, usually around 10pm.

Wildings seem to get limited distribution.  I've never seen one in Milwaukee, but I have in LA and NYC.  Occasionally Chicago.

Is it a big city thing, or is it more related to zoning laws?

I'm doing construction at my house right now, redoing the driveway, building a front yard perimeter wall, retiling the front deck, etc, the work is done by Mexicans and I'm paying for it.  Clearly, I'm not as powerful as the Donald.  Joke aside, my guys are really freaked out by Trump.  They really hate him.

It is mainly LA and NYC.  I was in Portland, OR, last weekend, and there was nothing.  Not a single outdoor poster.  Here, it's all over the place.

Sure is... around areas that are under construction (plywood walls around a perimeter), it can look good, but it gets to be a bit overboard, (here in certain areas of the west side, at least). Can look a bit trashy at times, imho, but it can be the fight for the exhibit space, one poster (sometimes partially) overlapping the other.

Yes, they're fun to collect.  What I like most is when the designs are completely original, different from bus stops and OS and cannot be found anywhere but in wildings.  These posters are meant to be glued to a wall.  Once they're glued, they're gone, never to be seen again.  Every time, I have a window of about 2 weeks before they completely disappear, and seeing how difficult it was to earn my little guy's trust, I don't think many people can get them.  So it makes them a little special and quite rare.

Finally got my Suicide Squad wildings today.  Man, those were hard to get.  I usually get my wildings before a movie opens, but in this case, it was 3 weeks after it opened.  Haven't seen the movie, nor do I care to see it, but I thought those were actually pretty neat.  There are 12 total in the set but my iphone could not fit them all.  All 48x70in.

It should win it all.  I still think it will.  I'm voting for it.

Only BIG concern at this point is that it wasn't nominated for ensemble cast at the SAG awards.  I guess it's not much of an ensemble to begin with, but the last movie to win the Oscar for best pic without being nominated for a SAG ensemble was Braveheart in 95.  Gosling and Stone both got noms at SAG.

Probably some of the earliest as well, no?  Most of the stuff posted here is modern.  Just curious, but does anyone know of posters created specifically for wilding that pre-date 2001: A Space Odyssey?
Title: Re: Wilding posters
Post by: Harry Caul on February 03, 2017, 09:17:40 PM
When I was writing my post I was thinking of the Franky and Invisible Man teasers -- but presumably those were dual use in the theaters as well.  And if that is the criteria, then pretty much every French and Italian poster ever created could be considered a wilding poster as those were wheat pasted up all over towns since the dawn of cinema.  8)

That is why I wrote designed "specifically for wilding" as that is my understanding about the origins of these 2001 posters -- and many of the more modern, unique designs in this thread.  I guess some of the teasers you showed could very well have been designed as wilding posters, but presumably they came from theater collections or NSS warehouses which would imply dual use at some point.

It doesn't really.  I probably have something like 300 bus/wilding posters, maybe more, and they fit in 4 or 5 tubes, rolled very tightly.

What I stopped collecting altogether are banners.  I don't care how cool they are, fabric takes top much room.  I used to collect them early on, I still have a few like Gladiator or Almost Famous sets, but no more.  I have the same problem with linen.  Takes way too much room.

But bus stops and windings, no easy.

There is a guy selling some on Ebay (he sold La La Land and now Guardians), but they're pretty hard to find.  They are meant to be glued to walls, so once they're gone, that's it.  There is no ungluing them ;). I suspect that some of my sets, like Mad Max, are pretty unique.  They were not sold on EBay and you had to know a guy to get them.

Also, even the people who put them up can't get them all.  They work specific neighborhood, and not all neighborhood have the same posters.

The Ragnarok set is very cool.

It's interesting that they're still leaving Superman out of all the Justice League advertising...I get why, but after the long trailers giving away pretty much the entire plot, it's surely not a surprise to anyone that he'll show up and save the day?

Justice League was unwatchable.  Just terrible.  Ben Affleck should retire.  He has no business in entertainment.  Same with Snyder.  Good riddance.  I got the wildings before I saw the movie because I knew I would eventually see the movie, but I never expected it to be this dreadful.  No wonder DC cannot compete with Feig and Marvel with a bunch of hacks like that.  Thank God for Gal and Jenkins.

There was no hesitation about getting these.  I pass on a lot of stuff, but these were an absolute must.  All the ingredients are there, some of my favs 80s flicks and illustrators and an interesting take to boot.  All WB titles except for two Universal (Back to the Future and Breakfast Club) and two TriStar pre Sony (Rambo First Blood Part 2 and Labyrinth).  I wonder why they chose those four titles and not more WB like Gremlins or Lethal Weapon.

Are these, by any chance, vinyl? I found a guy selling an incomplete set of these. The size is right, but they're vinyl. I'm interested, but I don't know what they are, and am worried they might be some commercial product--especially since China and Thailand seem to be importing a bunch of high-quality vinyl posters up to bus shelter sizes.

They are paper and were used around Los Angeles.  I don’t know anything about vinyl ones.  They might have been created for theater use, but maybe not.   A lot of those come from Asia and are counterfeit.  I personally do not collect vinyl posters because they take too much room to store.

This set was released as vinyl banners in the UK so they may well have been used elsewhere. I would stay well away from any vinyl banners offered from Thailand or China though.

NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.

Important Added Info: Note that most collectors know that the one-sheet image with a close up of the star child was used for the 1972 and 1974 re-releases of this classic sci-fi movie and they are also aware there was a colorful "psychedelic eye" wildposting poster (created for the re-launch of the movie in 1970). But few know there was also a 2nd 1970 wildposting poster with the solo star child image, and it was the main image for the 1970 campaign conceived by Mike Kaplan.

The movie opened in 70mm in 1968 in a roadshow release. By the end of 1969 it went into wide release in 35mm, while still playing at some of its most successful roadshow runs. But it was not as successful as previous roadshow releases in its wide 35mm breaks. Kaplan, who was 2001's marketing point man, was convinced that no longer being in 70mm was hurting it, and he convinced the studio to "re-launch" it in March 1970 once again in 70mm (with full stereo sound, correct lenses, etc.), the way 2001's growing fans/audiences wanted to see it.

He conceived the star child//ultimate trip campaign with a giant close-up of the star child, in green and gray and a very colorful secondary "giant eye" poster (with the star child in the eye), both with "the ultimate trip" as the tagline). The two posters were printed as one-sheets (measuring 27x41) and with no NSS or other printing/release credits in the bottom white border, as this was a test campaign in New York, which would determine if the re-launch would work.

"Wildposting" means that a huge number of the posters were posted on walls and building sites all over New York City just prior to the movie's release. Kaplan had the majority of both posters used for the "wildposting" campaign, but as the solo star child was the main image for the campaign, 2/3rds of the posters were the star child and 1/3rd were the giant eye. Both posters were also on view in poster frames at New York's Ziegfeld Theater, where 2001 played. All the print ads for this March 1970 re-launch only used the solo star child image.

After this re-launch proved successful, the star child campaign was adapted nationally to sustain the movie in its remaining roadshow runs and for re-launching the film in 70mm in new national engagements. The one-sheet for that 1970 release shows the star child, but the poster has less green than the "wildposting" one-sheet. The movie was re-released in both 1972 and 1974, and the one-sheets for those re-releases had the star child image, but with even less green than the "wildposting" one-sheet.

Both "wildposting" one-sheets are extremely rare and have no NSS information. Almost all of them were pasted to walls in New York City in March 1970, although a few were likely folded and sent to theaters. Note that while posters that were used in this way in the 1960s to the 1980s were referred to at the time as "wildposting" one-sheets, they later, mistakenly, acquired the name "wilding" posters, and so that is what we refer to them as, because it is term more modern collectors, unfortunately, know them by!

Mel, did you buy them from Bruce?  If so, they’re mine.  I used to trash all my extra sets and decided to send them to Bruce as an experiment.  I was hoping to at least break even on shipping, but I’ve actually made a few thousand bucks from them.  Better than trashing them I guess.

Nah, just the wildings.  I usually get multiple sets that I have no use for.  For the longest time, I thought no one cared, until another collector told me to send my extras to Bruce.  I did, and it worked.  I will not send anything else, though.

This is when your location being close to Hollywood lets you see cool posters promoting Oscar nominations, T.  I'd sure enjoy seeing these posters in the small urban wild of coastal Mississippi.  Stennis Space Center here in Mississippi is where the Saturn V rocket engines were tested for Apollo.  Would have been fun to see these posters at Stennis!  Okie

These were not easy to find, that's for sure.  Apparently Disney didn't print a lot of them and people have been ripping them from construction sites.  13 posters, all 48x70in.  Probably not what seasoned APF collectors like you guys go after, but I like them.

Funny, I thought no one would care about something like this.  APF is the only place in the world where you can see the full set (aside from my own site), so consider yourselves privileged  ;)

And Okie, yes, they are a lot of huge construction sites here in LA.  But you're right, 13 posters takes a lot of room, which is probably why they didn't print too many of those.

Which is why people like us somehow become custodians of movie history.  We store them away, making sure they do not get damaged.

Same here.  My son is OBSESSED with dinosaurs.  He's seen all the Jurassic movies, knows the names of all the dinosaurs.  We brought back so many artifacts from The Harvard Museum of Natural History and The American Museum of Natural History in NYC this summer.  When I was taking pictures of those 30 posters, he would not leave me alone and requested to have the poster of Blue in his room (the 3rd one of the first set).  I have a 3 year old, so I think not hahaha

Yeah, I got Top Gun and Thor.
