Very nice Zorba thumbup

I was going to post a westerns thread myself, but then thought about all the digging through posters, and taking pictures of them, so I decided against it.........but now..... :-\

Yup it's French and definitely the best Hombre poster out there, and in my opinion the best representation of Paul Newman.

Thanks guys.

To join in the  thumbup, of the above I'm liking:
Chris's Jane Russell
Paul's Doris Day cleavage
Charlie's Wild Heritage
Mike's big Clints and also head in the hole
Tstatum's Hombre
and finally, and not least, Zorba's Dances With Wolves...  actually make that any of the Clints instead.
Hey, Clint is popular... I might have to get some...

Well, scratching the bottom of the barrel as I am out of westerns, and to keep more images coming, here is another:

Locandine
(http://www.mysterycorp.com/temp/IlCoraggioELaSfi_1_750.jpg)

Makes me smile a little so will include it here. Probably will make Rich ill though, not just because it is a mexican lobby card... but I suspect Rich might be able to relate! (women problems, not blossoming into a pretty? flower)

I don't know how to quite present this. I would say that my transaction with you was pretty awesome and that I would recommend you to another forum member.  So I don't want you or the forum members to take this the wrong way. And I can't speak for other forum members and haven't shot off any PMs or anything.

But I feel my experience on here is cheapened when you try to end around selling items like this...  I think its best to stick to posting your collection in threads like this and posting for sale items in that thread.  You could always put a tag line in your signature that "everything I post is for sale."  You have a ton of great material and have been a nice addition to the forum but I feel your running close to breaking some sort of unwritten rules here...

Anyone else have any thoughts...

Yes, Charlie's right.
We ask all dealers/sellers, etc. to use the For Sale thread for any advertising.

Nice poster, ozmagic...very nice...

I don't know how to quite present this. I would say that my transaction with you was pretty awesome and that I would recommend you to another forum member.  So I don't want you or the forum members to take this the wrong way. And I can't speak for other forum members and haven't shot off any PMs or anything.

:-* Sorry you feel cheap, precious!

Thanks for you kind thoughts Mark... I am truly worried about new members like you fucking the forum up by trying to pass themselves off as collectors only to sell their wares...  It's welcome here, I am not the boss of this place.  But, I prefer the spam to be in the right thread.  No hard feelings; sorry I ruffled your feathers. But obviously you feel "Called Out" and "Put in your place" or you wouldn't be spewing commentary; all in very poor taste IMO.  I politely attempted to redirect your ignorance or your thinking we were ignorant and this is all you can come up with? How about, "Sorry guys, my bad.."

If I had known you were such an idiot I would have passed on the Kwai (well maybe not); but most definitely will pass on future deals.  So now, not only have you been called out, you've lost probably hundreds if not thousands of potential dollars from 'Precious' who thought you were actually an OK guy...  You are not going to goad me into a fight over your mistaken presumption..

Sorry you turned out to be a prick...   hitself
Title: Re: Westerns

IMO.

People who sell, invariably, replying to a thread, will post items for sale. Unless the thread is Aussie hammer or Val Lewton, or Hell drivers, then its probably a safe bet that anything I post I am open to sell. Saying that, I post for interest sake (like the above westerners). Items I have, others might not have seen, just for fun and information. I assume that if someone sees something they like and want, they will make a comment like WOW I MUST GET ONE OF THOSE in which case I can message saying OK, its $10) or they will message me. Thats not the 1st priority of the post, but might become a nice bonus.

So, while I don't find the word "selling" put in the post, I do think its redundant, if I wanted it, I would let the post-er know.

But for me I don't get it why people get up in arms about it. I haven't dealt with ozcinema (I don't think so anyways) but from what I gather he is a pretty dedicated collector and also a dealer, which you will find is like most people who post on forums differing levels of dealing of course).

Anyways... I guess a Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is apt. ;)

But for me I don't get it why people get up in arms about it.

Just feels like intentional manipulation of the purpose of the forum.  Its got its place, like you say.  But to randomly post in western and say "selling" was blatant to me; then to be soon followed up by the tough guys (or that may have been earlier).  Where does it stop?   That's it; enough preciousness...

Charlie, it was a faux pas for Mark to mention "for sale" in many of his posts that were not in the "for sale" section.  It was also a faux pas for him to not be a little more apologetic about it, especially since he is fairly new here.  No need to fly off the handle.  By the way, are you Irish?  8)

Mark, you seem like a good dude, and it's cool to have you aboard here.  You mentioned a few weeks ago "I don't collect anymore, so they need a good home."   If you don't mind me asking, what made you want to stop collecting, and sell your stock?

I made it clear to Holiday when applying that I was coming here as a part-time dealer. If there has been a problem with my posts then I'm sure the owners / moderators would address the issue with me.

Precious could have PM'd me rather than openly criticising and inviting others to join in. As it stands he is a lone voice. And the amount of supposedly rich collectors who have told me "they would have spent thousands", really makes me yawn!!  eyeroll

I've been around posters since the mid eighties when I worked at the Australian Film Commission. To begin with I collected Star Wars, then more sci-fi, Bronson, Eastwood, Pacino etc. All Aussie issue. A bit like Ves, I keep them a certain amount of time and then move them on. At the moment I am working on a novel and have no income for long periods. Selling the posters keeps me in ink! Haven't meant to offend here. Mark

The 'for sale'  tag on the post did not offend me, but I kinda ignored it.  If it had been posted in the for sale or dealers area, I would have seen it for what it was and may have been interested.  Probably not, as I don't have a large number of daybills.

I guess I am different than Ari.  I don't have nearly the volume of posters that others have here, but in the 25 years I have been at it, I have never sold a poster.  I collect for the joy and when I post a picture, it is not to brag or advertise.  It is because I feel that I have something to contribute to the thread that others might enjoy.  There are others in this group that feel the same as me.  There are also dealers.  We live together and work with each other.

Please don't take offense.  Holiday and Thierry set up these rules to help keep the forum running smoothly.  As a new member, I doubt you were aware you committed a boo-boo, but this really isn't worthy of a flame war.  Save that for Bond posters :)

That's cool, Mark, that you came here as a part time dealer.  I'm sure there are plenty of people, myself included, who appreciate your chiming in at times other than to sell stuff, and a lot of your for sale stuff is very cool.  As far as the mods/owners addressing little things like placing "for sale" on pieces that aren't in the "for sale" section, they're probably not gonna care a whole lot (Jeannie surely would have but that's another story), as they've said, they're not babysitters.  Anyway, it's really not a big deal about the little faux pas.

Surely you have a lot of knowledge, having been around movie gear for so long, and it sounds like you would be a "go to" guy for info. on Aussie stuff.  Y'all have some very cool, unique stuff for movies in Australia.  That's a good philosophy about keeping them and then moving on.  In the grand scheme of things, that's what all of us do, just on different time scales.  Good luck with your novel.

I am trying hard to build up my Westerns, it’s odd that for a genre that is uniquely and authentically American it no longer has the cultural presence it once did. Although I suppose you could make the same argument for the decline in WW II films for us Brits. Maybe the stories have just been told too often. Anyway, let’s start my magnificent 7 with The Duke tenderizing his favorite leading lady’s saddle…

Following with the anti-Duke revisionism/reality

If Italian Westerns are Spaghetti, what are French ones? Baguettie Westerns?

The classics, bad guys in black hats, noble savages and saloon girls

Did somebody say Saloon girls?

Hard to argue with Audie Murphy’s credentials as a real life hero

Not sure about peanuts but you’re right, they are cheaper. I have been priced out of the Hammer’s, the Carry On’s/Confessions/Adventures and it doesn’t seem to matter how obscure or crap the film was, some posters just go for a fortune. It took me forever getting outbid on The Land That Time Forgot, I remember seeing that film when it came out and it was rubbish even as a teenager, you could see the crane swinging the fiberglass pterodactyl about. I understand that the art on Land is entirely collectable, I love it, but that isn’t true of other posters like the one for The Monster Club. Once again, rubbish film, the art’s not even that interesting, but I was a huge R Chetwynd-Hayes reader in my youth so I wanted it…but why would anyone else? Cost me a fortune after years of being outbid…

So why are westerns so (relatively) cheap? Famous films, iconic actors, beautiful artwork – the panoramas lend themselves particularly well to Quads – and as I mentioned before, a uniquely and genuine American cultural phenomenon. The Spaghetti Westerns tend to go for high prices, which seems a little ironic. Peplums and Westerns are my top targets now – so please everyone else, stop buying them 

Sometimes this hobby makes no sense at all!

Anyway, Return of The Magnificent Seven…I don’t have many left to show off after this.

Did somebody mention Spaghetti?

I just can’t resist a Raquel poster, even if they never seem to make the best use of her (except Hammer)

I am also quite a big fan of the 50’s nosecone bra in art

Panorama’s were made for quads…

Love this one, Eric Sykes with a steampunk sniper rifle, Honor Blackman with her mouth full and Bardot pouting

How to pick up girls, Western style

…and once again, back to John. although sadly lacking Maureen’s bum this time…

Steady on Mark, There's a few of us old timers who like Land that time forgot, and Monster club. I know they were No budget and that's what makes them great.
I always liked Doug, and Submarines as well, and Dinosaurs, Man what a picture.... ;)

How couldn't you like Monster Club, anything with Vincent Price is a must, but it also had John Carradine, Donald, Britt, in fact a jollyfine cast (and some jollyfine songs)....

Yes, I know we all like different things, I love these cheap pictures, but there's quite a few others who do also hence part of the reason for the prices.

Anyhoo back to Westerns, I mean Peanuts in comparison to Hammers etc  It's another nice selection you've posted... thumbup
Do you have any 50's western Quads, as there's some excellent artwork on them....

...There's a few of us old timers who like Land that time forgot, and Monster club...

Ha ha! yes, I think a lot of it is probably to do with expectation...Land was exactly the kind of film I loved, in the tradition of Journey To The Center of Earth, that's why it was such a disappointment. There were certainly good points, Penhaligon owned a couple of them (Dana Gillespie too in the sequel), but I just expected so much more than fiberglass dinosaurs…but the poster is brilliant. Same with Monster Club, I read everything Chetwynd-Hayes wrote, I loved From Beyond the Grave (which is crap poster, great film IMHO), the concept of Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes in his own film, Vincent Price too, I had very high hopes…but, they went with cheap masks and couldn’t decide if they were making a horror film or a teenage pop video. There were great bits, Price, The Humgou and the Stripper, but they missed an opportunity to make a much better film using actors, stories and ideas that I was a big fan of. Fans will hate you the most when you let them down...but I'm over it now. A bit. Bloody BA Robertson? I ask you...

Rio Bravo (Warner Brothers, 1959). Italian 2 - Foglio (39" X 55")

This is such a great Western, Walter Brennan, The Duke, and War Bond. Dean stills the show though. This is my fav poster. Very La Bella Italia.

I am glad you put Walter Brennan first! He was marvelous (especially his John Wayne impression at the end). Likely the most enjoyable non-comic western ever made.

Walter Brennan is great in every movie. He wasn't that old.. I was very surprised.. he always played the old one...

Walter Brennan is great in every movie. He wasn't that old.. I was very surprised.. he always played the old one...

Here's good background info on him I compiled:

"Walter Brennan was a great character actor from the 1920s to the 1970s. Amazingly, it took him many years to get beyond playing uncredited roles! He had served in World War I (and supposedly he was exposed to mustard gas, which damaged his vocal chords and caused his distinctive voice!), and then he moved to Los Angeles where he speculated on real estate and made a fortune. But then he went broke, and he turned to movie acting in 1925, where he met struggling actor Gary Cooper, and the two became great friends, trying to get roles at the same time. But unlike Cooper, who became a major star, Brennan spent almost a decade playing very minor roles (often uncredited). In 1932, he had an accident while filming a movie and lost most of his teeth, and from that point on, he played people much older than himself, often hillbillies! But he finally had a major role in "Come and Get It" in 1936, and he won the first Best Supporting Actor Oscar (the first of three he would win), and he had major success from then on. Some of his roles include Red River, Bride of Frankenstein, and My Darling Clementine. He appeared in several movies with Gary Cooper, including Sergeant York and Meet John Doe. He had much fame later in life as the star of TV's "The Real McCoys".

Thanks. It reads very well to me, he was a very popular character in Hollywood.

Exellent supporting actor. I always thought that Walter B
and BARRY FITZGERALD (particularly in THE QUIET MAN) have some of the best performances in film history, in my humble opinion.

Doubt this western will ever be considered one of the best. But it is for me. Women are no often represented in westerns (or in films) like this. These are tough. Hope Emerson is great in this film.

Well.Ted, thank you for posting this great song !!

Liberty Valance is my favourite western. I grew up watching it,  re runs on telly nearly every Saturday when I was a kid.

And then one day I was no child no more. watched it as an adult. And it blew my mind.

I will have a poster. I know which one I want. Soon.

What a great taste you both have  ;D

Those two are my preferred papers. The Spanish is superb because it has a huge imo of James S. And it is different.

but the half sheet, well, i love that one. The Duke looks like he is about to walk into my living room and that expression is very J Wayne. Nearly went for it at EMP  a couple of weeks ago. It is in my list. So if you see it. Hands off. Coming to Rosa's home Soon.

Two of my good friends took me today to the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia.  Along with incredible Western art by Charles Russell, Frederic Remington, Tom Lovell, Robert McGinnis, and Thomas Hart Benton, there were also several really nice Western movie posters. Here I am pictured with a very close friend of mine in front of the 24 sheet for The Glorious Trail (1928); Custer's Last Fight 6 sht (1912); Paradise Canyon 6 sht (1935); and, Arizona Sweepstakes banner (1926).  Okie
