Title: Favorite Purchases of 2016
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on December 25, 2016, 08:35:41 AM
Hmm. Last year Thierry started a post asking us to show our favorite poster purchases of the year. He posted it in early December...and I've been waiting for it to reappear this year. Unless I'm blind and/or he posted it in a different section, I do NOT see it anywhere. So I thought I'd start it (sorry if I'm stepping on any toes) as the year is about to expire.  Last year I only posted 10. Thierry had a lot more than 10...so, using his example (and because I had such a good year, I really couldn't narrow it down), here are my 25 favorite purchases from 2016.

dunno, but WOW. even if that was all you bought it would be a good year.

Haven't bought a huge amount, but of the few, this is my favourite;

Picnic at Hanging Rock, Aussie Daybill

I wanted posters for Vertigo and 2001, but don't have the finances to get the ones I wanted, so I bought some re-release locandinas. They're very nice, but they're fairly recent re-releases, so not worth showing. Maybe 2017 will be different, hmm...

That Picnic at Hanging Rock has really done it's job.  I've had it in my 'to watch' queue for weeks (unbelievably I've never seen it in all these years) and I think it's time to finally have a look.  It's lovely.

It's also nice to see the Creature wearing sensible trousers (for once).  Can't go wrong with that trilogy.

It's well worth a watch.  Somehow I never noticed the "...A recollection of evil" tagline on that poster.  The portentous tagline contrasts nicely with the image of the virginal white-clad schoolgirls.

Shawn had quite a year, eh?  Wow!
Some great posters there, man...

I kinda had a late start to the year, what with work, moving, etc.
But it has been one of my best in the last few years.

Here's my highlights:

While I didn't purchase this beauty, I received it in a trade with one of the best collectors on this planet (or any other...) and it will probably be the first poster I frame this spring.

Another very cool poster is this signed by artist Graham Humphreys 30x40 print of his extraordinary image for a favorite chiller of mine.  Again, while I didn't purchase it, it was a gift from two more world-class collectors who surprised the sh*t outta me with this one.  Wow!

Next is a longtime favorite of mine, which I finally found rolled at a great price.
Marilyn Monroe by the late, great Tom Chantrell.

And then there's this Italiano SHE poster with art by Enzo Nistri.

Another Italiano favorite -- Return of the Living Dead.

Then, there's these three one sheets which are replacements for posters that I was gyped outta when I was a kid.
Very happy to get these.

Some spectacular pickups this year from all, not just here. I do really love the Mexicans though, they are something else. Franky is a killer too.

I had a few that arrived recently but have not photographed yet that make the list. Excluding those, these I think are the favorites for this year.

This one is the top of my list, Jedi English half billboard, 60"x120"-

Muppet Polish Animal-

Mardi Gras Yoda-

Can't forget Lawrence of course-

I only had a few poster wins, for some of my favorite movies.  I'm pretty stoked about them, and the upcoming year.  cheers

Zowie! I've been working the last few days (24th, 25th, and 26th). I had my original post done before then and just slapped it on whatever morning I posted it...and LOOK at all of the other posters that followed. Awesome job, gents! RoughOutline, that PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is great. I might need one. DEKE, I love your Mexican posters---especially those first two you posted. GORGEOUS!!!  TED, oh my stars! BONANZA there!  I love them all. Some of those I missed seeing if you posted them elsewhere. I have to set my sights on a TRIFFIDS for sure though. WOW!  MATT, you already know everyone LOVES that FRANKENSTEIN poster...and it looks so festive next to your tree.  RICH--what was in the tube? Hmm. Did I miss something (probably...).  MIKE, the ESB is spectacular (I like the art---just not a big STAR WARS fan) and I really dig the MUPPET poster with, what's that character's name? Animal? Ha! LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is also classic. BRANDON, I dig that clever KNIGHT OF CUPS poster. Never heard of it though. It's good? Your CAROL poster I also really like and SPLASH is fun.

And, just because I goofed up and it didn't show up, here is my No. 3 fave poster again--THE CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN 3-sheet:

Great posters everyone. Let's see MORE!!!!

CHEERS!

you missed nothing and what was inside wasn't important.

Some great posters - that Knight of Cups has gone on my wants list.

Here's two of mine:-

Back to the Future one sheet - unused style

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring one sheet - teaser
This was from the Estate of Christopher Lee - I only wanted the poster but the 32 undoubtedly authentic signatures had to come with it.

Hmm, some nice pieces there, to be sure.

And for the first time, I feel I can stand along side, head held up.

My favourite (singular) is the French Dr No which I've had framed and popped up.  Already illustrated on the Walls thread so won't spam the place.

Outstanding 3 sheet, there, as well as many others here.

It's pretty cool, and very rare, due to it's surprisingly very limited release.

Those are two great wins, ML, surely among other great acquisitions this year.

I did a quick search and saw the estate of Christopher Lee mentioned a few times, as well as that signed poster.  What a great piece.  Congrats.

SPECTACULAR VICK!!!

thanks gents.  Just like most of the paper on this thread, evidently its been a good year for many.
What I would appreciate most in 2017 are more stories behind the posters. i know many are keen to protect their sources but getting some insights on those special posters along with the pics would be great, i.e. the chase, closin the deal etc.  This one for me comes from an estate sale in riverside, California.  I knew it would sell quickly on ebay and made a pretty good offer within 24 hours of it being listed.  We ended up going back and forth in a flurry of about 30 emails until we settled outside of ebay.  A lot of cash, but, NEVER would I get the opportunity to own this poster again.

Right on, Vick.

It's always great to hear about "the score", and added info. about the poster, movie, etc.  Them estate sales, unknown auctions, et al. can have some real treasures, and of course sometimes really great prices for buyers.  Probably why we don't hear about people who win in a big way from them very often.  Lawl.  The more is not always the merrier, if you're the buyer at joints like that.

In any case, most folks' wins aren't so "special", when they're from the places like eBay, eMovie, and/or places relatively easily found online.  Personally, I like to mention the sellers' names a lot of times, for various reasons, but of course not everyone shares that sentiment.  Hopefully you've inspired some people to share their stories.

Vick, I forgot to say - 30 emails back and forth, eh?  That sounds like some serious haggling!  Pretty cool that y'all were able to eventually make a deal.

yep, I actually went back and counted them... 31 emails.  The poster had previously been framed and after purchasing it from the estate, he had moved it flat and since kept it flat.  It took a few emails to convince him that he could roll it, which he was terrified to do at first (he had limited knowledge of posters etc).  We also haggled on price quite a bit, shipping method, customs declaration etc.   thumbsup.gif

Mine is late to the party arriving yesterday December 27th.  Doubling my most expensive poster purchase prior to this - a 1914 World War 1 Canadian Wartime Exhibition poster by J.E.H. McDonald who later became a founding member of the famed Canadian artists called the Group of Seven.

Truly beautiful poster.

And Matt's Frankenstein is also a stunner.

Many other great posters this past year too from the other forum members.

I am going to cheat a little. I already posted this one in January 2017 latest acquisitions threads since I got it in the mail today, but really I purchased it in December.

It definitely makes my list of personal favorite purchases of 2016.  You don't too often find a poster that is travel advertising and war propaganda at the same time.

Also, I want a shirt like Mexico guy has.

Thanks! There is no signature on the poster. I haven't done any serious googling yet to see if I can figure out who did the artwork. If anyone knows, let me know!

Thanks T. thumbsup.gif   I am finally starting to have a semblance of the collection I wanted when I started this hobby about 5 years ago.

Oddly enough, a friend of a colleague of an acquaintance sought me out a couple of weeks ago, having in storage about 20 boxes of movie posters from the 50s-80s he bought when a local comic book store closed about 15 years ago.  I met him at Burger King he had a couple of sampler boxes, and gave him the rundown of what he had, what to look for, size, year, condition etc, and more importantly how to go about selling them.  I must have talked for an hour straight and really had a blast teaching him about it all while literally unfolding 100 posters one after the other in the booth there. He didn't have anything crazy, but there were some neat picks y'all are likely to see at an auction house near you. My knowledge is extremely limited compared to many (see most) on APF but its funny that through word of mouth, i've become somewhat of a local expert on vintage posters.  No shit!

All the Favorite purchase by year threads have been gathered and pinned here on this board, since these posters are all additions to our personal collections.  thumbup

Gentlemen thanks. This is the 12 foglio. Giant, really, really giant. There is one catch though. One foglio is missing. :) I will probably leave it as it is for now, maybe in some time I can have a restorer recreate that one panel. I really don't have any problems with this as this is one of 2-3 surviving copies. But all remaining 11 pieces of the poster are in perfect condition.

Yeah sorry, I meant the 6-sheet, not 6F.  So it's basically (4) 4-foglios side by side... must be incredible in person!   Congrats again!

Sami, that is beautious! Congrats on snagging this piece, and I sure can see why it was a fave pick up of 2016, too.

Just curious..which of the panels is missing? Your poster looks complete.

Hi Jeff,

This is a stock photo of the complete poster. The photo I have is huge in size so could not upload it. The one panel missing is basically the top part of the car with the driver and a small portion of the crowds. An important piece for sure, but even like this, in this size, the poster looks incredible. I have discussed this with my restorer, he can handle this, but I just can't decide. Besides, spending money on more posters!   :)

Great poster.  OMG, it sucks that you're missing a piece.  I wonder how a poster like this can survive in great condition after all these years but somehow a panel goes missing.  It has got to be somewhere.  I'm jealous, but if you had it complete, I would fly to Turkey and snatch it from your greedy hands.

Nice thread.  I honestly can't remember what I purchased last year, and my spreadsheet is not letting me sort for whatever reason.

Here are a few I do remember...

I could of sworn I posted a reply to this earlier.

Anyway glad to see one you acquired from me be a poster that you can remember T.

And on a side note that Bardot for Contempt is absolute beautiful.

Yeah, there were obviously a lot more posters to show, but it's in the past now.

Which poster did I buy from you, Marc?

Thierry, well, it has to be somewhere, but where? Maybe we will find out in the future, who knows? Well, in any case, the poster is gorgeous, and you are always more than welcome.

Oh yeah, one of my favorite 80s flicks.  I had never seen your advance quad until you put yours for sale.  It was a no brainer, I had to have it.

I agree Jeff, I'm a big fan of Ballester, I wish he had done more horror titles.

For some reason, I could only post 8 pics earlier.  Here are some other posters bought in 2016: 3 UK quads by Tom Chantrell, one for Hammer (Lost Continent, 1968), one for Amicus (Land that Time Forgot, 1975), and a re-working of a Bernie Wrightson design for Creepshow (1982).  Also, a French 23X32 for Flesh and the Fiends (1960), a US one-sheet for Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and a US 3-sheet for Invaders from Mars (1953), all unbacked except that last one, which is linen-backed.

Benjamin, when attaching pics directly like this, there is a limit of 8 images, with a total file size of 1000kb, per post. That's a limitation the forum software has in place and not a setting we can change, unfortunately. :-\

Thanks Jeff, glad you like the Whip and the Body poster, I think it's quite beautiful too.  I wish I knew who did the artwork.  I also have the French version by Constantin Belinsky (see below), but I think the art for the Italian paper is nicer.  As often is the case when comparing the style of those 2 countries re: movie posters, the Italian image is more painterly and less stylized.

That is exactly what drew me to the Italian poster, too, Benjamin. The beauty and softness of the actress in the foreground is so amazingly captured here.

Other countries have used this same imagery but lack the finesse, imho, that was done on the Italian 4F.

As one example.. the German poster is the same design and is beautiful... but I think the Italian edges it out.
