Carson, unknowingly sparked this topic here (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,74.msg5035.html#msg5035) when he asked Erich where he got those awesome paper weights (shown below). Anyway, I'm sick of using books and scotch glasses so I want to know too. I don't want them to be frilly, colorful, etched with sports team logos, or Italian blown glass, or whatever... just something nice and simple that won't distract from the poster like those in the photo below.
Ideally it would be nice not to have to spend $50+ on 4 either. Around $30 or less would be great if that is possible.
BTW, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place... it is probably of interest to all collectors but I didn't really see good home for it in that section. Mods, feel free to move this if necessary.
-
They're acrylic. I'll find the link when I get home -- bookmark is not on this machine.
I had to spend a total of $40 or so with shipping, which I thought was expensive. But they sure do look nice and are sufficiently heavy to hold down 99% of posters. Sometimes with a really thick and curly B1 it will lift up a little.
I'll also dig up the exact specs I ordered.
Brace yourself, company X, for a rash of orders of random chunks of clear acrylic!!
-
Yes, please share!
On a side note, I started searching on eBay... you wouldn't believe some of the paperweights they have! Maybe I should go for a Universal Horror theme (http://cgi.ebay.com/Bat-in-acrylic-paperweight-4-x-3-x-1-5_W0QQitemZ380208431292QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item58863040bc)? On second... maybe not!

They sell similar small but heavy acrylic pieces all over the place here with all manner of creepy crawlies encased within
From spiders to scorpions to bats to centipedes - perfect theme for holding down horror posters!
-
Well, if you don't mind the scalloped edges, these (http://cgi.ebay.com/Paperweight-Crystal-Scallop-3-3-4-D-x-3-4-H_W0QQitemZ300370777556QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45ef7e55d4) are actually pretty nice (crystal) and are only $10 shipped for four!

-
Poor bat bastard. I've worked with live bats and many of them have better personalities than most of the two-legged arseholes I encounter on a daily basis.
I might buy this one to give it a proper burial.
-
Alright, so the same company with the scalloped ones above also have other nicer crystal close-out paperweights. They are $8.25 shipped each, but don't buy yet as I'm inquiring about deals for sets of four for us collectors. I would imagine crystal would be even better than acrylic as they would be heavier, no? I think they'll come down as shipping should scale with quantity the way they have them listed.
I'll post back when I get a response... in the mean time, would anyone be interested in a set of four of these 3.5" diameter weights if we could get them at like $20-$25 shipped (continental US probably)?

That was my thought as well >:(

This has been my experience with almost every animal I have encountered...
-
I'd buy a set, too
-
I would go in for one set of these. I hope this doesn't turn into a logistical nightmare for you though.
-
NOTE: I have no affiliation with this company, I just thought this was a good deal and wanted to share.
Alright, here is the deal... Their stock on eBay is apparently all they have. I've listed out everything they have that is not engraved below. If you want to take advantage of this, please respond to the thread and note which ones (and quantity you emailed them about). That way we aren't all emailing about the same set of 4.
Email: scliquidations@aol.com
Tell them you are a poster collector and would like a similar deal, (4) for $20 shipped. Give them a link to the auction for the one you want. They will send you a PayPal invoice directly (not through eBay). I assume they will eventually adjust the auction stock.

By the way, I was told they use flat rate shipping ($10). So discounts for more quantity... for example, even though it is 4 for $20, I was told they could do 12 for $35! Enjoy!

I'd like to get some of these for sure. So do we think the rectangle ones will slide less and a little bigger/heavier or should we get the circle ones?
-
Get the while they are hot... I just decided to add (4) of the square ones to my order incase they are any better! I'm inquiring about how much extra after the first (4) for $20 -- I suggested $8 for the next (4)!

From what I read about Terminator, SC Liquidation is about as responsive as Mondo! That is why we should keep track independent of our email confirmations! It is almost 5pm on the East Coast... we may not hear back until Monday now!

I put in an order for 4 of these: Paperweight, 3-1/2"D, Crystal Presse, Papier Plat (300377949520)

Which auction did you order your 4 from? I have you listed on the first auction but just in case...

This is great! Thanks for setting this up, Harry. It was fun getting these along with you guys.
Add me to this list of (4) rectangular crystal weights. (Because I'm square, too.)
I haven't gotten confirmation by email, though. I decided to call and leave a message as well, but, alas, it was 5PM EST and I'm sure they closed up shop for the day. They work everyday until 9PM M-S and until 6PM Sunday according to their website:

My only regret is not getting that Alamo Roadshow Terminator 2! I've been eschewing these posters, but the T2 is so impressive and arresting. I sniffle at my lost.

I can't figure out how to get the formatting based on the last version. Do we have to redo all the formatting every single time (strikethroughs, bold, etc.)?
-
Yes, you'll have to redo the formatting, Erich.
Jeannie
-
I'll take care of it... I think I can just quote Jeannie's update and make adjustments.

Oh well, thanks for taking care of this.

You are right, you can't quote a quote... Whoever is next, quote this message, remove the quote tags, and then add your updates. Wash, rinse and repeat...

Sweet Lord Carson can you please switch your Avatar back to something hot?
I mean, Fat Tron is OK in small doses but my eyes, they burn, they burn.

LOL That's damn funny
-
At least you can't see his package in that picture.

If they sent an invoice, go for it! I've already paid for mine.

Paid 30 minutes ago and already sent an email with tracking info :o Damn, they get things done quickly

Wow, I just realized... what if these things suck!? After the whole rollercoaster of emotions I put T through with that poster cache and now this, you guys better send me to a time out corner of the forum!

Harry?! Noooo!
Happy thoughts, happy thoughts!

For $20? Don't sweat it, Harry

So, at the risk of sounding really stupid... what do you do with them?
I mean, I've always used long wooden baguettes to take pictures of posters. Are paper weights better or do you use them for something else?
-
Whoa, I'm just getting them to hold down the corners of posters. Not sure what sort of kinky things you had in mind....
-

Thierry, for illustration please see the picture in the first post in this thread. They're good for holding down poster edges when taking pics. Can't say if it's better than your method, but they look nice to me.

The only thing more amazing about the 4 pages of this thread are the posts at NS4 about a period "."

But the " . " isn't just any " . " .
It's an exclamatory " . " of conciliation. A peace offering. An olive branch. Because Chris is just too darn nice and has to be so Canadianly polite.
And this has got to be the fastest growing thread on APF yet.... and it's about paperweights to hold down our posters so that we can take pretty pictures of them.
We. Are. Nerds.
Jeannie

Bah, this thread is 90% logistics. Cut out those and this would be a half page at best. Now, if we all started to seriously ponder T's question of "what is so special about paperweights"... Then this thread might really have a chance at growing!
-
What is so special about paperweights?
And, I would appreciate a pros and cons debate on crystal vs. acrylic as the best material to be used on our posters. Plus, if y'all wouldn't mind, I'd like to hear everyone's rationale for rectangular vs. round weights.

Aaaarghhh... this dude ALWAYS pins 'em down with weights!!!! Makes me cringe...

I think I like the direction where this thread is headed...

A stop on analysis of the symbolism behind "."!

I was actually able to get 8 of the rectangular crystal weights even though Harry had already claimed 4 of the 10 that were listed as available on eBay. The seller had more in their inventory. So, if anyone else who wants these weights but hasn't bought them because you think they've all been plucked, you should contact the seller directly.
I actually got a deal: $32 total, shipping included. Not bad. But if they suck, I'm going to send them to Harry. In pieces. :P
I'm also going to send Chris a " . " version of the weights. :-*
Jeannie
-
Received the crystal weights. This has got to be the quickest I have ever received any order. It was placed late on Friday night, shipped out Saturday and arrived on Monday. Wow. A letter to me at my department at Penn from another department at Penn once took 11 days to get to me. Yes, 11 days to travel across campus. These weights travelled across several states in 1 business day.
The weights are good. The rectangular ones I got are flat on one side and slightly inclined on the other. They're also pretty heavy, so they'll hold down the poster corners very well, even on thick paper stock. There is very little, if any, distortion in seeing through the crystal itself, though the image is mildy magnified. I'm pretty pleased with them.
Kudos to Harry for discovering them and creating the Coalition of Crystal Weights!
Jeannie
-
:o I live in the same state and I haven't received mine yet!
Glad to hear the rectangles turned out well. I do have 4 of those on order...
-
Just in case anyone is still interested here what they are now showing for stock on eBay. However, as Jeanie mentioned, their stock online might not always be correct so it might pay to email even if I x'd it out.

I was so impressed with the outstanding customer service at SC Liquidations that I sent Mr. and Mrs. Moler an email to thank them. Mr. Art Moler told me that they ship every day that the USPS works, that's 6 days out of the week, and that they ship out more than 100+ items per day. If the Postal guy hasn't arrived yet, Mr. Moler goes back onto the computer to take care of more orders and they then package more right up to the point that the Postal guy arrives and those later packages get sent out too.
So, I went back into their website to see if they sell anything else I might be interested in. Wouldn't cha know it -- they sell collectibles, including vintage comics. I'm gonna go find me a $1 million comic! (Here that, Angelo?)
Jeannie

Better watch it, Jeannie. They have a few issues of "Star Wars" & "Battlestar Galactica". You might be tempted to buy them all up

I was! ;D

Oh, forgot to mention mine arrived today, also, and they're very nice. Thanks again, Harry
