I do think it's Time we had a Bruce Lee section, it will Stop Matt and me blocking up the Latest thread.
So I'm thinking any thing Bruce Lee related, Press-books, Lobbies, anything, I'll get a few pics of my stuff over the next few days, Matt may well have things he can post now, like his Campaign book...

You are right T, best stick with Bieber and SJP!

Too bad Bieber doesn't have much muscle, otherwise you'd be all over him too. Parker on the other end should be more appealing to you.

No more Bieber please, my eyes, my eyes!
Cool thread Paul!
I love Bruce Lee and his films...he had so much charisma, a really amazing guy. I think Enter the Dragon or Fist of Fury are my favourite of his films. I'm also partial to films that owe much to him - particularly Fist of Legend (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110200/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) (a remake of Fist of Fury staring Jet Li), Ip Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220719/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) and Ip Man 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1386932/?ref_=sr_1) with Donnie Yen (I went to Foshan when in China recently to see Ip Man's memorial area which has some cool Bruce photos and information) and I even have a soft spot for No Retreat, No Surrender (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089695/) (starring Bruce's ghost!)
I love those HK one sheets, Matt...very nice indeed. I can't imagine many of those survived?
I don't have many, I wish I had bought more quads about 6 or 7 years ago when they were less pricey. I keep meaning to ask - is there a quad for Way of the Dragon that has Bruce holding nunchukas? I'm sure I remember seeing one, but it could be my mind playing tricks...presumably they were taken out as they were a banned weapon or something. Anyway, here are the ones I have:
Enter the Dragon quad

Enter the Dragon - not sure what this is? It has the measurements of a DC, but could just be something for the soundtrack? Paul, any ideas?

I agree Tob, T has had his fun... now lets keep this new thread on track, shall we?
Possibly some helpful info for folks. This site shows some of the various screen logos, although the dates are a bit off and they missed the most recent merger: http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/Golden_Harvest_(China)
1971-1972 (used for Big Boss through Way of the Dragon HK releases)
GH Circle Logo: The print logo during this time are the letters GH in the form of a circle (http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s369/drharrycaul/ScreenShot2012-07-05at105043PM.png)
1973-1977/78 (used for Enter the Dragon HK release)

GH Wheat Logo: The print logo during this time are the letters GH with a wheat stalk in the right side of the H: (http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s369/drharrycaul/ScreenShot2012-07-05at105056PM.png)
1978-2003 (Used for Game of Death)
GH Square Logo: The print logo during this time is the letter G made up of four rectangles in a square shape.
2003-2007

In 2007 Golden Harvest was bought by Orange Sky and distribution rights to Lee's films were sold to Fortune Star (at least in HK and possibly around Asia).

Nice Tob, I'll have to get some pics taken, I'm letting the side down already. Two things I never expected to see in here are Bieber, and SJP...Shudders....
No, there wasn't a "Way of" Quad with Bruce holding the Nunchaku. There was a stack of commercial posters of it though, including Kung-fu monthly...

If you see the docu "BL the Man , the Legend" you can see the 2nd logo on official GH letter paper where Lee had written down some ideas for films and stuff......it's possible they were experimenting with logos before settling on the "straw" logo in '73.
Yup , I remember the quads were easier to find around 10 yrs ago (wouldn't go so far as to say plentyfull though , still rare)

Good question Paul.
In general the Japanese are far less aware of their war crimes than we Germans. Both Bruce Lee and Wang Yu movies (whose films are very often anti-Japanese) were released there and particularly Bruce Lee was very popular. The Japanese probably just see it as entertainment with some bad and some good guys and don't pay so much attention about the historical background. There is however a small but influential nationalistic movement in the country and I reckon they were not very happy about these films.

Since I do not believe that you can out an emovie auction (plus this is a cheap poster), this cheesy cash in on Bruce's death movie poster is available this week:
-
I don't think it is an awards snipe. "Best posthumous" does no necessarily mean any award in my opinion. Besides, I don't think the movie actually won any award. On top-right of the poster, the same words "best posthumous" appears besides Bruce Lee's name.
To me, it is more of an album snipe. Roman Tam had a new album released with the movie called "the Game of Death", and the theme song was in the album in both Cantonese (No.1) and Mandarin (No.7).
Wow, you work quickly! Many thanks!

This lowly li'l Belgian Game of Death that both Tob and Mike have might be my favorite Bruce Lee design. I always wanted to get an Enter the dragon one sheet, but the look of this one is hard to beat. The face, the hands, the layout, the color -- all beautiful. Great poster.

I've seen one of those before. It was for sale out of Singapore and I was told the "Permainan Maut" title was Malay and that it was printed, not a snipe. So it was printed for that country. Up until I found the first release HK poster, that Malay poster was the only one I had come across with the HK artwork on it.

Thanks Ted, I think the artwork is by Mascii? Agree that it's a great likeness and cool pose.
-
I like it too. But I prefer the late 70s (German) re-release for WAY OF THE DRAGON. I think Mascii truly captured Lee with that painting.
Also some more posters / lc's on WAY OF THE DRAGON...
And now an important question: I need a new photo upload website. A good one. (Free, fast, good tools, at least 1 GB space) Anyone? So far I was with picture trail (not much space offered any longer) and photobucket. Which was OK until they recently lost their software license. Now it's a bad bad website. Slow, complicated - waste of time (of which I got not that much). Worst is that the pictures (as well as with image shack, which I since tried) turn around while uploading. And to rotate them afterwards in 'editing' takes f o r e v e r. (even when you change the uploading settings. They probably do that so you spend A LOT of time on the site.). So if I don't find a good service soon, I'm gonna stop uploading stuff, unfortunately. Just don't have the time for these antique websites.

Jollynice, Way has always been my favourite film of Bruce's...
-
So these Big Boss quads (that use the GH wheat logo) must date from between 1974 and early 1978 at the latest.
"Don't consentrate on the logos or you'll miss all that heavenly glory !" , lulz ;)
There are exceptions , for example : Boss spain 1sh (has 1st logo but was not released until April '73 there) , FoF yug 1sh (1st issue logo but released in '78)
H.K brochures , rarest to most common : ETD , WotD , FoF & BB. I've seen 2 covers for Boss , one more glossy and one more matte , both have vintage paper. Only seen WotD ticket , they're all scarce as hell.
-
Sorry, should have posted this in here...
I hate to contradict Tang, but the U.K. FIRST release dates for Bruce's films are:-
The Big Boss 12-2-74
Fist of Fury 22-11-72 BBFC, OR 20-7-73 IMDB...?
Way of the Dragon 15-2-74
Enter the Dragon 23-10-73
Game of Death 26-4-78
I think most are spot on, but the BBFC saying 22-11-72, and the IMDB saying 20-7-73, for Fist of Fury, neither seem right to me, as I remember it was released after Enter, so sometime early 74 for the U.K. release would be more likely...
-
I saw an article about FoF being a hit in U.K & Ireland , it was dated Sept '73 so July '73 seems legit release date (will ask around but very good memory when it comes to such details)
WotD was def released June '74 , it says so on the dvd (text document)
BB got a Chinatown/London only showing in '72 , it's possible Lazenby attended it and decided to try his luck in H.K
-
Tang, I always use the BBFC for British release date, usually they are very good. Do check them out...

This is the result of a previous Wants post for a friend who decided he wanted more Man stuff in the house after too long being subjected to the products and design of an (until recently) otherwise female household.
'Why don't you get an original Bruce Lee, Enter the Dragon poster', I asked. 'I can do all the searching and sorting.' And so it came to be.
The insert came from Bruce, the restoration and backing by Alain at Poster Science, the framing by Louise Lee.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if Return of the Dragon had an Insert poster made for it? This for those who have the Pressbook to check in.
Cheers.
-
HI,
Does anyone here have a Return of the Dragon pressbook to see if there was an Insert produced for this film?
Judging from past sales at Heritage, it isn't looking likely.

April 13th , '73 : Germans see Lee for the first time in Big Boss......
mid april '73 : WB leaves H.K but Lee is not satisfied with Enters opening , thus Lee vs Sammo is born.
Lee : "Check out my six pack !"
Sammo : ".....and what about my one pack ?"
Lee : "You lied to me Sammo , you promised you'd be in Game !"
Sammo : "But Bruce , I was filining in Bangkok and could not leave just like that !"
Lee : "You tricked me Sammo !"
he he ;)
That same month Ponti sent investors to GH studios , he wanted Lee/Loren to team up......Lee wasn't interested if it was less than 2 mill US salary ;)

When I visited Cathay Films back in the late 70's, they gave me quite a few odds and ends they had laying around. One thing was this poster...
I wonder how many of these are still out there, I can't say I've seen any myself.

Paul, this is a superb poster. I love the Buce Lee's look and overall design of the poster. Don't know if it is red or orange? It certainly has a very cool look.
I like it very much
ps- please add this one to my XMAS box. I will take.
-
It is Red Rosa, I took the pic without the flash as it was quite bright in the Poster room.
Oh, and I did get 4 of these from them... ;)
-
Extremely rare poster , they also did "London only" posters for Way , those too are nightmare to find.
Game '78 was a huge hit in Tokyo (outgrossing Enter) so Game 2 was mostly for the Japan market.

Nice.....I do find the coffin art a bit creepy though ;)
Read below :
The UK first classic Kung fu movie to be shown on general release was KING BOXER staring Lo Lieh a Shaw Brothers classic movie, shown in 1972 at Leicester square cinema. It was such a hit at that time, the cinema owners themselves were surprised.
Bruce Lee's FIST OF FURY was shown at the Piccadilly RIALTO for 6 months with a full house almost every weekend.
ENTER THE DRAGON was released in January 14th 1974 at the WARNER west end cinema.
Night cinema dominated for many years in London cinema's such as Camberwell Odeon in 1974 and then it moved to Brixton ACE cinema run by 2 English brothers Peter and Richard. At that time the audience was predominately afro-Caribbean in the London areas. The afro-Caribbean audience were noisy and extremely excited while watching Kung fu movies and almost turned this fanaticism into a cult following.
Also :
Felix Dennis didnt get in to HK before Bruce died, but shortly after. His first experience of BL was when he was walking past the Rialto cinema in Soho London and saw a massive queue. Upon asking someone what they were queuing for was told about this Chinese guy who beats the hell out of everyone.... The movie: FIST of FURY, which was released in the UK coincidentally the same day Bruce actually died.
(just confirms that FoF british premiere was July 20 , '73 imo)

Great stuff Tang! Love the LP cover -- it should be a poster! And the 'chucks are way cool.
By the way, no one over the latest acquisition thread seemed to care about this one, but maybe it will get more appreciation here. I *think* this is a Taiwanese poster, but I'm not positive. I love the art regardless -- better than the regular HK release I think.

Funny how things get missed sometimes... Congrats!
-
Can you tell anything about the origin of this one Armin? It measures 21 1/8" x 30 3/8" and it's on matte finish paper. I'm trying to figure out if it's a first release style B, a very early HK re-release, a Taiwanese poster, or possibly some other printing used in Chinese-speaking areas outside of HK. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, there is a similar style Big Boss poster floating around (shown below, but that I do not own) and both were from a lot of late 60s/early 70s posters so I'm pretty sure this was printed at or very close to the time of release... possibly at the Big Boss on this Fist of Fury were printed at the same time given their very similar style. Both use the original GH logo which was discontinued in 1973 with the release of ETD.
Thanks!
FIST OF FURY

There is no indication where the poster was printed or for which territory it was intended for.

Ok, thanks for taking a look at it. The mystery continues I guess...
-
Hey Matt, I'm almost sure that it was printed in Hongkong, as indicated by the printer's name under the Golden Harvest mark. It shows “印承司公限有廠刷印生維”, meaning "PRINTED BY WEI SANG PRINTING FACTORY LIMITED". It is a Hongkong-based company and I think the company still exists today. As for which version it is, it is hard to tell just yet. I will try to help looking around, maybe give the printer a call some time ;)
Does the right bottom of the Big Boss show the same printer name?
Ok, thanks for taking a look at it. The mystery continues I guess...

Thanks wormie! l'm not sure if the Big Boss has the same printer name as I don't own that poster and that is the best photo I have of it. However, I would have to assume it's identical. That same printer name also shows up on the regular release HK posters (link to HA super-size photo of Enter the Dragon (http://dyn1.heritagestatic.com/lf?set=path%5B1%2F0%2F1%2F9%2F0%2F10190590%5D&call=url%5Bfile%3Aproduct.chain%5D)). These particular posters turned up in Japan so that could lend support to the theory that they were printed for export -- probably shortly after their domestic HK release given that the style is so similar. Maybe they coincided with the release of Way of the Dragon as that was the last movie to be released with the old GH circle logo?
-
Another scarce poster for you Lee fans... First (official) release of Way of the Dragon in mainland China from 1990.

"first release style B, a very early HK re-release"
Never seen any style #B for the Lee films , makes me wonder if they could even afford to print a style #B......I doubt they re-issued until '74 , re-issue '73 seems unlikely imo.
(I've seen ads for the re-issues in H.K mags : BB/FoF R74 , WotD R75)
The images are def from the press ad's , unless they're from H.K/Singapore they might've been printed '73 (for example I've got Indonesian Way flyer with white GH logo but since Enters box office is mentioned it's prolly from early '74 as Enter did not premiere in SE Asia until late '73)
Imdb says Enter premiered July 26th , '73......I doubt this very much , it was prolly not released until Oct/Nov '73 in H.K , spring '74 Malaysia (banned in Singapore)
I have seen the Boss before but passed on it as I did not know it's origin and worried about fakes......they could very well be legit though.
Really need to get Hapkido quad......

Thanks for your thoughts Tang. Do you have any insight on the Blue background Game of Death?

I think the Blue back-ground was just a contrast thing, as it goes well with the yellow of the suit..

Made a slide show of the Way Dec '72 premiere magazine.......
"Love the LP cover -- it should be a poster!"
It *does* exsist as a 1sh too , cept the background is white......personally I'd never buy it unless I could see the paper stock (BB , FoF & Way re-issues are on matte paper & Enter is from the same era so should've similar paper stock......they do have a bit of shine to them up close but far from the shine the glossy fakes got !)
The nunchucks were removed from Enter re-issue quad........

-
I never knew there was so many lobbys on Marlowe.id like to pick up the bruce ones, thanks for showing me.paul

Those cards are very hard to find. Took me many years to find all 5 LEE cards. I just listed two doubles in my eBay shop - check it out, they always sell quite fast (last time I had some for sale was about 5 years ago).
few b&w's and the UK / US 8x10 color still:

Great stuff Tang! Love the LP cover -- it should be a poster! And the 'chucks are way cool.
By the way, no one over the latest acquisition thread seemed to care about this one, but maybe it will get more appreciation here. I *think* this is a Taiwanese poster, but I'm not positive. I love the art regardless -- better than the regular HK release I think.

This is the original Hong Kong poster for "The Game of Death" in 1978. It's the very first GOD poster period.

Is it factory folded , tons of rolled fake ones.....I saw "Wheels on Meals" H.K poster but since it was rolled = no dice.
