Has anybody picked up a copy of Dave Kehr's ITALIAN FILM POSTERS? I know the book came out way back in 2003 (co-published with MoMA), but it's a real visual delight!
http://meansheets.com/2010/11/17/mambo-italiano/
And I also noticed that his cover of THE BIG HEAT must've inspired John Alvin's design for BLADE RUNNER...
http://meansheets.com/2010/11/17/poster-ripoff-7/
-
I think you can definitely say Blade Runner was inspired by old film noir poster designs... but I would hardly call it a rip off design. Especially of that Big Heat poster as other than the inclusion of cityscapes, the compositions are quite different. If anything I'd say it has some Gilda going on (damn near the same smoking pose) with hints of maybe Out of the Past (large offset protagonist head). Although the later is probably a stretch...
I'll have to check out the book though... I'm a sucker for poster books!

Nice posts today at Meansheets, Russ. It was nice seeing the Italian posters, which I believe are underrated. Maybe we can see more?
Great blog!
-
Yes, Italian posters are definitely underrated - my favourite posters are from the early 1950's with artwork by Martinati, Ballester and Brini - two-foglio size movie posters are just about manageable framed.

Definitely have to beef up my Italian section...I've been getting so fat off the French "pastries" that maybe I need to go w/ some more spaghetti westerns!
-
Yeah, it's a good book. I pretty much get every new poster book that comes out. Taschen just released on for Bollywood posters which is well done. For me at least, I had no idea that those posters have as much history as other countries like the US, England, Germany and so on. They go back just as early as film making started. Anyway, both are good books. None of them top Sam Sarowitz's books, though. Translating Hollywood is more like a textbook than anything else, there's so much in it.

Just looked around the web and read an interesting interview with Sam Sarowitz:
http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/an-interview-with-vintage-movie-poster-collector-sam-sarowitz/ (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/an-interview-with-vintage-movie-poster-collector-sam-sarowitz/).
Also pulled off my shelf his Art of The Modern Movie Poster which I also highly recommend.
Also just bought a 3 volume book set of Italian posters: PLATEA IN PIEDI 1945-58,1959-68,1969-78. Will post some pics when they arrive

Where did you get that book set from, Steve? I have been meaning to search out ever since I first heard about it.

Hi Thomsen, unfortunately I bought them not as a set (couldnt find them as a set) but bought from 2 sources. After hours and hours searching, bought Vol 0 & 2 from an online seller @ 30Euro each (think I was lucky there with that price), & Vol 1 off ebay for 110Euro. Like new copies. Havent received them yet though.
Vol 0 (1945-58) (Italian/French text) (got 1999 edition)
Vol 1 (1959-68) (Italian/English text) (got 1995 edition)
Vol 2 (1969-78) (Italian/French text) (got 2003 edition)

I was very tempted to buy 'The Art of Italian Film Posters' by Mel Bagshaw. But then I peeked inside. All the featured images apparently come from different sources, very different in quality, many have this nice 'blown-up jpeg' feel.

Here's a dynamic poster by Sandro Simeoni (aka Symeoni) for I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN. In Italy, it was released as The Massacre of Frankenstein.

I paid $200 for it from InterCardsRL (http://www.intercardsrl.com/)including shipping from Italy, much less than a better copy sold at Heritage for $900 (http://movieposters.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7055&lotNo=83671).)
Looks great Mel! I thought I've read that Intercard was out of bussiness, but it seems not.
I always wanted to get some stuff from them... Was the poster well packed? How was turnaround time? Did you wrote them in english?

Not so popular amongst many, but I love Jean Rollin films, they are slow and beautiful, mad ooze atmosphere. He was working up to the day he died.

Really... I'm not really fond of the French art at all. The Italian version is much more detailed and polished.

I've tried to watch a couple Rollin films, just can't get into them. Definitely great cinematography but a little too slow paced for my tastes.

No, but the films were very cheap. Perhaps exaggerated but he did spend a lot on art compared to the very tight budget of the films themselves.

I like the Martinati. Davis smiling and a gentler looking Paul Muni convey another feeling and emotion, IMO, plus he didnt just copy the US artwork verbatim.

Yeah, I can see that, but have you seen the movie? The US OS so perfectly represents Davis' character! The Italian is kind of off-putting to me.
It's a deal, you take the Italian, I will take the US OS ;)
Compromise is a beautiful thing!

Anyone know much about Italian 1-Sheets (which are basically the size of US 1-Sheets)? I rarely see anyone posting them and I don't see too many for sale. Were they printed in lower quantity than the normal sizes?

You mean 1 Foglio (28" x 39") which is half the size of the poster shown above by harry which is a 2 Fogli (1 panel: 39" x 55")?
Nah, don't know sorry

As far as I know italian 1sheet ( we call it "soggettone") was an integral part of a lobby cards set (in italian "set di fotobuste").
For each movie there usually were: one 4fogli, one 2fogli ( sometimes 2, A and B), one locandina and a set of fotobuste. The set was made up of 4/6/8 lobby cards and 1 ( sometimes 2 ) soggettone.
It was usually 2times folded to fit in the envelope containing the lobby cards (wich were folded in half).
About the print run I don't know.. surely we see a few on the market.

Great info. Thanks for sharing. I've been able to pick up a couple 1F's this year and they really have some stellar artwork, just started wondering why I didn't see them as much.
-
Much lower quantities for italy 1shs it seems , I guess they thought bustas were more important to print in large quantities.
-
Outside of Italy there is a lot of confusion when it comes to Italian '1-sh' posters. For us non-italians, 1-sheets are posters. Since the Italian 1-sheet posters are called '2-foglio', many dealers and collectors think that the 'soggetone' is a '1-sheet' poster because it has that (approx.) US 1-sheet poster size. Of course it is not, it is a lobby card and part of the lobby card set - not a poster. Italian posters of '1-sheet' size just do not exist (pre-war maybe ? I'm not an expert on stuff printed before the 50s).
Not all 'photobusta' sets include 'soggetones'. It is very hard to find Italian pressbooks as reference, so it's not easy to know
when an Italian set is complete. The envelope often states the content of the sets though. The smallest set I have is EASY RIDER 70s re-release (set of 4), the one from 1969 had 10 bustas (no soggetone as far as I know). WILD BUNCH for instance is a set of 12 (no soggetone either). And ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST for instance is a special case: Set of 12 incl. 7 regular size bustas + 5 soggetone!
Collecting Italia is an adventure. And very worthwhile, beautiful stuff...

Just to chime in on the 1-foglio. Before the fifties 1-foglio were quite often used as a regular poster size in stead of a part of a fotobusta set. This was probably due to paper shortage, at least during and shortly after WW II.
here a few examples:

There were 1-foglios produced at least as late as the 1960s.

A first release 4-foglio and 2-foglio for Psycho, that I hadn't seen before, featuring only Anthony Perkins (actor-wise). Both are dated 1960 in the lower left border corner:

Grand Illusion is from the 1946 rerelease.

Interesting choice by the Italians to put this great image of Christopher Lee on the locandina for The Blood Beast Terror (1968)--when he isn't even in the movie.

And here lies the problem with Italian paper... I'm just checking Bruce's auction for this afternoon, and he has a lot of good stuff I'd love to get, but of course the condition is horrible on most pieces so I'm passing. The best looking posters on the worst paper - A travesty. :(

I second that. The Italian posters in many cases are true pieces of art but the paper they are printed on if not backed early often becomes so brittle it disintegrates if touched with even moderate pressure. Probably one reason I have not been able to get my Italian Rodan yet. :'(
-
But what about your secret Paris-based restorer?
In my 12 years of collecting, I have restored less than 10 posters, and it's only because I knew I would not be able to find the posters again and bought them in lesser condition. Condition is really key for me, since I don't linenback. A "Good" poster at Bruce's is not for me.

Tang, what does the '65RR look like? According to EMP, this is a probable '61RR:

Hi all. Recently pulled the trigger on a Godfather locandina on eBay despite my slight reservation about a relatively old poster (1972) being commonly available on the site.
I was pleased with what I got -- printing looks sharp and it was impressively yellowed ("felt" old), but my restorer thinks it could be a reprint.
Was wondering if anyone has had experience with this poster? I can't find much information online about Italian bootlegs.
-
Was the ebay seller tloceposters? if it was your poster is a most likely a fake. If not post a few images and detailed description under the Authentication section and someone should assist you.

Enjoy all the good people here.
And please post a pic or 2 of your poster. Would be great to see.
Why did your restorer think it was a repro/reprint? Did he mention specifics or certain things that caught his eye?

No, it was goposter -- they sold a 140x200 cm Italian Godfather poster (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Manifesto-Originale-Il-Padrino-Godfather-140x200-CM-Marlon-Brando-/331907505675) that got positive feedback and convinced me to overlook their relatively low feedback.

Thanks! Unfortunately I only took this one picture of the poster -- it's off getting framed (like I said, it looks pretty great regardless).
There's a light circular indent, about 2" in diameter, in the black portion of the poster that my restorer thought could have been from the equipment used to reprint the poster? I didn't press the issue and it's not really visible in the picture.
