it looks like Masu Kawa??? but who knows?

VERY pleased with this!!! although it was in worse shape than the guy said it was, the colour of the paper is quite light. usually these are really quite brown!
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1108_zpsztvl8xoz.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1108_zpsztvl8xoz.jpg.html)

bit of a cheeky number!

and this was in much better condition than advertised! he stated it was folded, when in fact it was rolled! lovely art on this although not really one of the better alice movies out there.

Another eclectic and interesting mix there, TW.

And the Conspirators of Pleasure B2, with that rooster head dead center on it... that's an eye grabber, too!

Team's on a roll again, quite a cast in that Alice Quad, I've never seen that film version, may have to give it a viewing.

Congrats again.

Just a suggestion, but you might think about starting a thread in the 'Show Us Your Collection' category. That way, you can post you new posters to your own thread and not have to go through starting a new thread everytime. Just an idea....

This one for Shark! (1969) is pretty good.   cool1

I had never heard about the movie.  A brief search shows that it's a fairly obscure title.  Here's a crazy factoid about it: The history of Shark!, unfortunate in more ways than one since a Mexican stuntman, Jose Marco, was killed by a renegade white shark that broke through a protective net during filming, is a sad one. Not only was the project taken out of the director’s hands, withheld from release for several years (despite a four-page spread in Life magazine, June 7, 1968, at the time of the stuntman’s death), and finally schlepped out for a quiet, almost anonymous six-day run on the bottom half of a 42nd Street motorcycle bill, but the finished product is a distortion of its director’s original film... From here (http://brightlightsfilm.com/dead-in-the-water-on-samuel-fullers-butchered-shark-1969/#.VyudBHolk8I)

Stunning imagery there for Venere Indiana aka Naked in the Sun.

Cool tagline, and poster, but kinda surprising that they didn't feature Ms. Robbie in the design.

Art by Andrzej Pagowski

I dont know the movie, but love the vivid colors and quirky art. It makes me want to check it out.

sstrangely enough i have another poster for shark as well, an italian that is MUCH more graphic as its a photo of a frog man with his leg bitten off!!

yeah i really like the tarzan poster too, as it dosnt suffer the same fate as 99% of quads and have ***** and retarded quotes all over it :)
alice just plain sucks though! what a shame, the last tryptich set were great .

Interesting.  Would be perfect for The Wall (the movie that is, not Trump's.  Although it could be used to express how the Mexicans feel about it).

Some good looking hauls so far this month!

Team Weapon: I'm unfamiliar with most of those titles, but I dig most all the art. That 'Venere Indiana' is wicked.

Jeff: Another killer poster out of Poland, interested to find out what the film is about.

Paul: I dropped you a PM about your quad contact. I've got a soft spot in my heart for Mia Wasikowska, might try and pick up one of those 'ATTLG'

Here are a few that arrived today....

Nightmare on Elm Street (German A1)

Tales From The Darkside (German A1)

007: James Bond (Dutch '99 commercial poster)  I strayed a bit on this one. I'm not a huge Bond fan, but have always enjoyed the films, and this commercial poster struck me as simple, but totally 'Bond-like.'

The Shining (Aust. daybill)

This was at the door tonight. A never folded, US insert for the William Castle flicker, The Night Walker (1965), with art by Reynold Brown. I've always liked this artwork, and Barbara Stanwyck is a huge favorite of mine. Plus, the text at the top, with the 6, stated "claims", works well.

It could use a little bleach bath, but what is interesting is that the brown marks on the top and bottom areas are not tape residue. I thought it might be, but once in hand, it looks to be areas of darkening like can happen from heat or maybe "acid burn" from something that was in contact with the front of the insert. There are no corresponding marks on the back, so it's a bit of a mystery as to what caused them. The paper is all in tact and there is nothing (texture) on the paper's surface, either.

Cool info there, Brandon, about Shark. I've never heard of it, either. I wonder what Burt Reynolds has/had to say about it and the filming experience?

I also did a quick look online and there are a couple on youtube that shows a shark attack from the flicker, but I then read on this site (http://www.thelightningbugslair.com/2010/06/shark-1969-sam-fuller-swims-in-troubled.html) that the footage used in the film was not the death of the stuntman, but another shark attack that was shot for the movie:

"There was also the matter of the shark attack. A stuntman was killed during the filming of Shark due to an actual attack by the titular creature. When the movie was released, the producers marketed the film as containing the actual footage of the man being killed by a shark. The director, Sam Fuller, was outraged and railed against the producers for such a cheap and disrespectful gimmick.

While the film does contain one brutal looking shark attack, apparently it was all just a scheme to gain some notoriety. In fact, the film does not contain the footage in question though the producers did slap a dedication on the beginning of the film to all the brave stunt men who worked in the shark-infested waters."

Since there are always variations (publicity) of what some say was used in the movie, it makes it even more interesting and curious to try and uncover.  Spying.gif

i think we may be talking at cross purposes here.
the poster i just got does not have burt reynolds in it. it's an obscure Italian documentary i think you could "loosely" include into the mondo cycle of movies.

I was going on and following up on Neo's info, so thanks for the update and correction. I see the Japan-english title is Sharks and Men.

It's a cool poster. I hope you can figure out who did the art, too.

Thanks Jeff.
That Freaks poster was linenbacked too for some reason. I purchased it anyways as I couldn't find it.
If anyone has more info on the TCM quad let me know. I heard there was a quad the had a red X on it. This one does not have it.

--- I think I found it. So this is the 98 re release- The other version that had the X- London or X- Local was the original version then.
So I wonder if the rerelease is hard to find...

yeah its a reissue quad, used to be common, not so much anymore I guess.
but certainly an AFFORDABLE alternative to the 1st issue.

Lovely quads. Are the Buster Keaton and Some Like it Hot BFI quads? Some of their Rs are better than the original!

Spying.gif

That is very interesting.  So much drama with the behind the scenes stuff.  Wow.

i think we may be talking at cross purposes here.
the poster i just got does not have burt reynolds in it. it's an obscure Italian documentary i think you could "loosely" include into the mondo cycle of movies.

but i would still love to know who the artist was.... ANYONE????? does anyone know of any resources for finding japanese artists?

Oh zoinks.  They put the tagline "Shark!" in large, bold letters, as most would do with the title.  And, of course, there's actually a film named "Shark!" with the exclamation point.  Who's bright idea was that?  Lawl

A little confusing, but thanks for the clarification, TW.

Hi rosa - I think they r both Park Circus re-releases - I did manage to get 2 of some of the nicer re-releases with the intention of future framing. My favourites out of the bunch would be
With nail & I - fantastic film to watch after a few beers
Deer Hunter - purple version - a more limited print on thicker paper & looks stunning
Some like it Hot - certainly an improvement on previous re-release
Out of the "older" stuff , Contraband Spain is easily my fav - the picture just doesn't do it justice , closely followed my Ice Station Zebra which took an age to find at a reasonable price
Next up I'll post some new framed  & few foreign posters!

it looks like Masu Kawa??? but who knows?

Hey TW,

You nailed the artist's name!  thumbsup.gif

I poked around and found that his full name is Susumu Masukawa.

That is very interesting.  So much drama with the behind the scenes stuff.  Wow.

Oh zoinks.  They put the tagline "Shark!" in large, bold letters, as most would do with the title.  And, of course, there's actually a film named "Shark!" with the exclamation point.  Who's bright idea was that?  Lawl

A little confusing, but thanks for the clarification, TW.

Here's a great writeup about Sharks and Men:
http://www.filmonpaper.com/posters/sharks-men-b2-japan/ (http://www.filmonpaper.com/posters/sharks-men-b2-japan/)

thanks for that, but i have the movie. and ............. it isnt very good haha. saying that i havent seen it for at least 15 years.
pity FOP dosnt know who the artist is either :( i cant seem to find any list on japanese artists. you would think with all the knowledge on here there would at least be a slender list at least?
i dont even have that many japanese posters to be honest.

A few more for me this month... These are both Belgian's. They both have a considerable amount of space above the artwork, I'm guessing this was for engagement dates/times similar to WCs? Regardless, I've always liked the alternate Friday the 13th artwork displayed here, and Chinatown is probably my favorite Drama of all time, so when I found these on the Bay for a reasonable price together I jumped on them.

Happy to help, TW.  ;)

I just did some searches online, using the last name you thought it was as the starting point, then went from there. The "Sherlocking" is one part of this hobby that I also really enjoy. It can be like uncovering undiscovered tidbits, at times.  sherlockholmes.gif

Yes, you should always make sure your Belgians have the white border at the top (size is around 14x21in), otherwise it means they have been cut, which a lot of people do to make them look cleaner, get rid of the handwriting, but what you really get is 1/2 of a poster.  I own a few Belgians myself and made that mistake early on.  After that, make sure it says Imprimé en Belgique at the bottom and not Printed in Belgium, which is the easiest way to spot a fake.  And check the printers, they are pretty much always the same.  Panneels, Lichtert, Verstegen and Edicolor are the main ones.

I found out by chance it was the 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' European Premiere last night in London. I knew that they print up posters specifically for the event and this is a title of interest to me.I decided to go early while they were setting up and got chatting to one of the guys working there. To my delight they had various posters awaiting to be attached to the barriers so I asked if I could have some. He asked his boss and got a one word answer 'No!' He said. There was a set of 6 posters. Last time there was 6 from a previous Premiere I managed to get 2 and, being a completist, was very disappointed.

I know how difficult it is to get these posters. There are huge crowds and everyone wants a souvenir. I had to leave to pick my kids up and returned a lot later when the Premier was in full swing. Things didn't look good as it was so busy. To make a long story slightly shorter, through desperation, determination and luck I managed to get a full set. I know the artwork isn't amazing, but for me it's the fact that they were used at the Premiere and only available on this one night. There were 50 of each design printed and I was told they were all used on the night. They're 40"x60" and very heavy. A real struggle to get them home but for me, well worth it!

And Spirit, well, that movie will always be close to my heart since it is the reason I met my wife.  I was working for Katzenberg at the time, and my wife, who was a 23 year old artist at DreamWorks and had just finished working on Spirit, came to my building to see if her name had made the credits.  It was a big deal because artists hated going to the "suits" building, and especially not to Katzenberg's department.  A little scary to them.  She asked the first person she met, and that was me.

And the rest, as they say, blah blah blah.

And yes, her name was on the credits.

The Shining (Aust. daybill)

Great posters! I really like the Nightmare on Elm Street and Tales from the Darkside posters.

Congratulations and welcome. Anything  from a Tarantino film is a winner in my book. And this one is great!

No idea about the price, I  don't  collect modern posters but I'll say this: it is yours  now, you paid whatever you felt it was worth so ..enjoy it!!! We all found bargains and we all have overpaid at some point

That's a great first poster and the landscape format works well. Welcome to the forum but do remember that collecting movie posters should not be seen as an investment. If you get some bargains along the way that's fine but as Rosa said you WILL on occasion overpay as well, whether you know about it or not.

Welcome.  You're in good company, I think there are a few people on this forum who collect Tarantino.  He is definitely one of the few true originals to emerge from the last quarter century and worth collecting.  And the poster you got is a worthy #1.  Enjoy.

Buy what you like, like what you buy and know it also never hurts to look around, cross check and sherlock a bit, especially when a poster is available from more than one source. It's what makes it all fun!

Thanks, Mike. I never knew that some JP B0's came printed in 2 sections.

To my knowledge, almost all B0s from the mid 60s and earlier were printed in two overlapping sections.  Starting in the late 60s/early 70s they started transitioning to printing on a single large sheet.

I still don't understand why there are two different sizes of B0s, though.  The ones from the 1950s always measured 40x58 (made from two B1 posters like this vertical poster http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/10944094.html and this horizontal poster http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/14035383.html).  When they moved to single sheet printing they started using a slightly different size of 38x62 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/7354241.html).  But they also continued to print in both formats well into the 80s.  For instance B0s from the Star Wars films are all 38x62 while the Apocalypse Now B0s are 40x58.  Strange...

Mike, what size is your Easy Rider printed in?  It almost looks like 38x62, but I've never seen one of those printed on two sheets.

Cool info Matt, thanks.

The ER measures roughly 40.5 x 58 so it is in two sheets but the modern size.

Ok, that sounds right.  I've only ever seen the 40x58 posters printed in 2-sheets until the late 1960s.  This Easy Rider might be one of the last.  Then the format disappeared until the late 1970s when they revived it, but now printed as a single sheet (Alien, Apocalypse Now, Kagemusha, etc...).  Maybe the printers/technology finally allowed them to print that wide on a single sheet?

Ha! I'd say...and there's my Spirits of the Dead Fr1p!

Actually, this is mainly how I collect nowadays, through sub-collections, and I find it extremely fulfilling.

If you look at the few posters I posted above, most of them fit into one of my sub-collections...  Bardot (Vie Privée, Repos du Guerrier and Mépris), Coppola (Rumble Fish), Academy Award nominated films (On the Waterfront, Gigi, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Darling), Claudia Cardinale (Pink Panther), Godard (Alphaville), Roger Soubie (Moonfleet), Boris Grinsson (They Shoot Horse), Grace Kelly (Mogambo), Carpenter (Halloween), Argento (Bird).

These are all sub-collections of mine and since I'm a completist, once I start a collection, I must have them all.

1944 first release Swedish OS for the UK film, Love On the Dole (1941), which was also Deborah Kerr's first leading role, at age 19.

I added a couple close-up, detail shots, to show the fine drawing that looks to have been done in charcoal, and then finished with the added red color. From a distance, the bottom crowd scene looks like a photo, but that section is also all hand drawn.

The film was originally proposed in 1936 but the story didnt pass the UK censor, so production was delayed.*
It was recently reintroduced and screened again by the BFI, as part of its series, this past January.

That poster is awesome Team Weapon!  Nice catch :)
I took a little look about it, the Japanese title is "Yoba" which translates as "hag" or "old witch".
It stars Machiko Kyo of Rashomon and was directed by Tadashi Imai who directed "Bushido".

bigmike So killer! Something I need to add to my collection for sure.

teamwaponThe cinematography was amazing for sure, can't deny that. I really wanted to like this film... from the trailers it was right up my alley, but it just didn't do it for me. I figured out the 'twist' almost immediately, and I thought the mom's turn from seemingly possessed to almost normal at the end was a weird transition, with little explanation or reason.

Like you said, to each his own.

Eh, generally true, but not always.  Once Upon a Time in the West (1969 release in Japan) was on one sheet 39x60.  Other exceptions that I know of:

The Graduate (1968) 38x61.5, The Pleasure Seekers, and Morituri (both 1965), and the Blue Max (1966) all 38x62 on a single sheet.  I am sure there are other mid 60s B0s printed on a single sheet, but all of the 38x62 variety.  The Birds maybe??

A Clockwork Orange (1971) was printed on 2 sheets.  I know because I have the top (but not bottom) half of one.  Similarly, I have half a B0 for The Gauntlet (1977).  Godfather was 38.5x62 on a single sheet.

With very few exceptions though, the 38x62 is vertical, and the 40x58 is horizontal.

Eh, generally true, but not always  ;)

(http://marqueeposter.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/42-samurai-iii-duel-at-ganryu-island-japanese-b0-1956-01.jpg) (http://marqueeposter.com/product/samurai-iii-duel-at-ganryu-island/)

I could give you a list of a dozen or more examples of vertical B0s in the 40x58 size.  Some, as you mentioned, even into the late 60s/early 70s.

I think we are making pretty much the same claims here... Starting in the (mid to) late 60s they began printing B0s on a single sheet with different measurements (38x62).  Around the same time, they started printing fewer and fewer B0s in the older, 2-sheet 40x58 format.  Then in the late 70s the 40x58 format got a lot more common, but now printed on a single sheet.

And yes, there are lots of exceptions!

Easy Rider was a Jan '70 release in Japan, though that B0 might very well be from the 1972 rerelease.

By the way, are you of the opinion that the orange, matte finish poster is from the 1970 release and the blue, glossy finish poster is from the 1972 re-release?  I've never found definitive proof either way, but that is my assumption.  I do think Mike's orange B0 is from the first release.  I have seen orange-style, matte finish STBs as well, but no larger posters (STB, B1, B0) with the blue backgrounds.

I did a little sherlocking online. In looking at Mike's B0 image, the 5 digit number under the Eirin mark, looks to be 44346. The first 2 digits correspond to the year the film was rated, and the last 3 are the number film for that year, so this was the 346th film rated.

The number 44 equates with the year 1969 (the film then opened in Japan in January of 1970). So Mike's is a first release, if that is the number on his poster. It looks to be, but when I zoom in, the numbers get too fuzzy.

I then inquired to EMP and asked for the Eirin number on both the orange and the orange and blue B2's they have sold (they havent sold any B1s or B0s as of yet). I selected one example from each color style, at random. EMP wrote me back, saying that the orange as well as the orange/blue style had the same Eirin number (44346), which would indicate that the 2-color versions are also a first release. To be certain, they would have to check each image file to verify the Eirin number.

If any were from the June 1972 RR, the Eirin number would begin with the number 47.

Thanks to Armin's site, too, for making this info available, and explaining how the Eirin system works and was set up: thumbup

http://posteroid.com/Poster%20Info%20Folder/Determining%20a%20poster%27s%20age.php

Edit: It has been suggested that a later, JP RR poster, which uses the same art as the first release, may also retain the original Eirin number. One would think that number would be updated to reflect the RR year, but I dont know. I've Pm'd Armin for clarification on that.

Looks like Jeff answered the mail on this one.  I can't recall seeing a large format poster with the blue background either.  Since I don't collect the title, I never paid a ton of attention to the different styles and which release each belongs to.  It would be conveniant to say that since the B0 is orange and the first release that the others all are and the blue is the RR.  But that would be hasty and might not be true.  The blue certainly shows up on the market more often.

How do you decide which is the back and which is the front? Interchangeable, as I guess the back would be whatever side happens to be facing the wall, on a certain day?

Here's a few.

I got 7 different versions of these, 2 Quads and 5 1shts, but I won't bore you with them all, here's 2 of them.

Looks like the hits just keep on rolling in this month for everyone. I was watching that Shall we Dance Jay, nice addition, congrats! Teamweapon, that Possessed is awesome, will have to look out for one myself!

Since the Easy Rider B0 caused such nice discourse and some great info about Erin marks to be posted I thought I would share the one below that came in as well. I will definitely be reading through the posteroid site info on Erin marks again soon, amazing how much you can forget and even more amazing how much more other people here know!

By the way Jeff, you did read the Erin mark correctly on the ER. Not a mark expert by any means but could the blue background versions be RR's but use the same mark date since that is when the movie was first released/approved and subsequent RR posters use the original movie approval date especially since the only change is coloring, the text looks to be the same to me? That would explain it if the blues are RR posters and not first release. Does anyone know how do we know they are supposed to be RR's?

This is one of the toughest B2's to find for Star Wars, the pre-awards montage poster. If it was much harder to come by one I would put it in the realm of unicorn. To put it into perspective, for every 8-10 advance star field B2's that shows up one of these might pop up. The only tougher regular production poster that I am aware of is the 82 Blue RR which looks like the US 79 RR one sheet.

Mike, I asked that question to Armin (new Eirin numbers for later RR posters) and I posted here what he wrote back to me.  ;)

http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,10856.msg204027.html#msg204027

Nice SW addition, too. Once again, congrats on another cool addition to the SW herd.

Did I misread the 5 digit Eirin number on your ER B0? If so, ooops...

can I ask what it is?

A few more modern recent additions for me...

Bug (US 1sh)... Not a whole lot to this poster, but I was really impressed with this low budget psycho-horror by William 'the Exorcist' Friedkin that largely flew under the radar. Both Ashley Judd, and Michael Shannon's performances are stellar.

Ex Machina (US 1sh)... Again, a pretty minimal poster, but the movie is one of the better sci-fi/thriller films I've seen in awhile.

I've only ever seen this design for a 1sh, I'll have to do a little research on the other. I actually prefer the JP design, but was able to get this one off of Dale for fairly cheap, along with one for my boys, so I jumped on it.

Yeah, rub it in why don't ya. Still looking for the B1 and B0 for that one and frankly all of the B0's for SW.

For your question, I have not read anywhere that there is either a B1 or B0 pre-Oscar but have seen at least 1 B1 years ago.  It was not in person though so cannot 100% guarantee it was authentic.

You should be jealous of anything.  They're just posters.  Posters can be found everywhere.  I haven't been jealous of a poster in years because I know they can all be found, and if they can't, there are always other posters.

Nah.  There are so many posters I want, it really doesn't matter.  One more, one less...  Let me give you an example.  The Heritage Signature auction.  I don't look at their catalog until 2-3 days before the auction.  So it prevents me from getting too excited about something.  There is no build up.  And then I don't get the posters for another 6 months.  Like I said, they're just posters and there are plenty of them out there.

Upside down - this doesn't even make sense in space.  (muhahaha  :D )

Btw i guess the designer decided to put the Death Star "upside down", because like this the light is coming from the left - just like the light on Vader's head.

I understand why it was done. If things can't be upside down in space can things rotate in space? Maybe I like the fact that the Death Star is rotated 180 degrees to how we normally view it  :P

I was about to say that I needed to find a copy of that Aliens B2, but I checked my website and I already own it.  I definitely need to find a B1 of that Revenant poster, though, now that I've seen the design.

Here's one I got that I'm actually quite happy about...  Simplicity is key.

The Blue Angel (1959) (Georges Kerfyser) (47x118in)

Received this today and popped it in as snap frame. Not in the best of shape with tape on all fours corners and nicks round border but looks good framed. Forgive the pic taken on my phone.

I think a large art area and small text area is good to. This large poster could work well with a table or chair in front as the art is up high.

Probably because the powers that be Know that the dedicated fans will probably clamor for this poster, too, to a degree. Anything SW seems to have the pull of the Force.

Mike (Undead) .. did you order your copy yet? (http://i1355.photobucket.com/albums/q719/spitfire3992/43_zpsjnyaqbxo.gif)

Matt Finally had the chance to look into it via the googles.....lol 99% chance its commercial  Doh.gif  got it included with another poster above for $10 before having the chance to look into it.  I kinda figure when buying it but also saw the fold lines and thought to myself well maybe this was released.   So I will keep my fingers crossed for the slim 1% chance its legit and not commercial lol... Its actually still in the mail.  impawards has it on their site  so that gave me a tiny bit of hope.  http://www.impawards.com/1992/reservoir_dogs_ver3.html
----but its missing some elements at the bottom.

and it could be this: 24x34
